Trinity received the 1st Team Safe Sports School award from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. The award recognizes schools for their superior efforts made to protect youth athletes.

On January 4, Dick Harman was recognized for 25 years of volunteer work as the “voice of the Titans” at both girls and boy basketball games. “Mr. Harman has been the public address announcer at the highest levels of professional and collegiate sports, and he brings that level of professionalism to every one of our games,” said Athletic Director Eric Gobble. “Mr. Harman’s strong voice and practiced expertise serve to enhance the Trinity basketball experience for fans and players alike,” said Gobble.

FALL SPORTS

Girls Cross Country

The girls cross country team came into the season with high expectations after last year’s League of Independent Schools (LIS) Championship. The team worked hard all summer and came into the season well-prepared but suffered several injuries during the season that proved to be detrimental. The team’s spirit remained strong, however, with leadership from senior co-captains Elizabeth Bell and Molly Breidenbaugh. The team finished the year on a good note, finishing fourth in the LIS and fifth in the state. Sophomore Katie Bowe made All-LIS and All-State for the second consecutive year, finishing fourth in both meets. Breidenbaugh won her second consecutive LIS title, setting a course record and winning by over one minute in a dominating performance. The following week she successfully won her second consecutive individual state championship, winning again by a large margin over a competitive field. Breidenbaugh will continue her running career at William and Mary next year.

Boys Cross Country

The boys cross country team entered the fall season looking very different from the previous year having graduated several key varsity runners. While the season got off to a slow start, the team showed resiliency and improved every week. Junior Jamie Hiegel was a steadying force that could be counted on to run at the front of every race. Seniors Buck Kirtland, Chase Shugart and Reid Barden provided veteran leadership and sophomores Steve Jean and Cole Shugart made remarkable drops in time to be major contributors on the varsity squad. The team received a surprise boost by

newcomers Josh Thoms ’17 and Max Galbraith ’18 who came on strong at the end of the year. The boys nearly pulled an improbable upset at the Prep League Championship coming up only three points short of Woodberry Forest. The following week the boys finished a remarkable second place in the state meet while defeating some fierce competition. The team placed four runners on the AllPrep team: Hiegel, Kirtland, Jean and Thoms. Hiegel was also All-State by virtue of his third place finish.

Field Hockey

Varsity field hockey finished the regular season tied for second in the LIS and ranked second in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state poll for Division I Independent Schools. Led by seniors Abby

Carls, Lauren Cravens, Emily

Dodson, Keaton Busser and Cammie Lloyd, the Titans earned spots in both the LIS Championship game and the VISAA semi-final game. Lloyd, Annie Snead ’16, and Christie van de Kamp ’16 earned All-LIS honors and All-State honors. Lloyd earned first team All-Metro and All-Region honors as well. The team’s style of play was defined by its speed, tenacity, and teamwork. The girls earned 19 wins and outscored their opponents 142-41, including 13 shutouts. Lloyd also celebrated scoring her 100th career goal this season. The team’s next three leading scorers were Snead, Ella Donahue ’17 and Emma Nash ’16 with additional contributions from Emmy Bowe ’15,

Keaton Busser ’14, Lauren

Cravens ’14 and Tappe Grotos ’15. The midfield was locked down by Miranda Stinson ’14, Busser, and van de Kamp with help from newcomers Grace English ’17 and Cameron Rogers ’16. The team’s back line was bolstered by strong play from Carls, Maeve Losen ’15 and Amy Maier ’16. Several of the Titans have already committed to play at the next level including Carls (Appalachain State), Busser (Longwood), Dodson (Sweet Briar) and Lloyd (William and Mary). With 20 returning players, the Titans are already looking forward to the 2014 season.

Boys Soccer

Led by senior captains Adam Dingman and All-Prep selection Camm Johnson, this year’s boys varsity soccer team was characterized by exceptional team chemistry and a balance of new and experienced players. A seasoned defense, anchored by junior goalkeeper Grant Gonzalez and seniors Thomas Graziano, Vincent Salandro, Dingman, Johnson, junior Hassan Brown, sophomore Andrew Barron as well as freshmen Sam Halish and Chris Benedetti proved to be very stingy and held several All-State players in check throughout the season. The midfield was patrolled by seniors Gabe Erickson, Cabell Glancy, Taylor Kent and Andrew Meade along with freshmen Parker Shama, Damian Andriano and Ross Hendricks. Offensive spark was provided by junior Connor Salter, sophomore Addison Hyatt and freshman Ethan Hinckle.

Highlights from the season included meeting preseason goals of retaining the league sportsmanship title and securing a ranked position in the state poll as well as a win against Benedictine and a last second victory over STAB in the final match of the season.

Girls Tennis

Girls tennis ended the season with a record of 6-7. In the LIS tournament, the players performed well with a third-place finish. Alissa Rosen ’16 finished second in the conference and made both the All-LIS and All-State teams. The team had a record seven seniors, all of whom have been involved in the tennis program their entire high school career. “This group of players created an atmosphere for the team which truly contributed to the Titan spirit,” said coach Craig Huizenga. “We will miss them, but our JV program has developed some exciting players for the future.”

Volleyball

The volleyball team ended its 2013 season with a runner-up finish in the LIS tournament. The team was led by seniors Sarah

Godfrey, Allie Neal, Bridget

Nolan and Morgan Rutter. The season was characterized by consistent, season-long improvement capped by an impressive run in late October when the team won six of its last seven matches. The Titans finished with a 14-12 record. Neal and sophomore Avery Archibald were named to the All-LIS team.

Football

The 2013 football team ended the season with a record of 3-7. They played what many thought to be the hardest schedule in the state for Division II and competed to the final whistle of the season. Seniors Tripp Harris, Elias Khoury, and JP Guidon led the team and brought energy and excitement on game day. Seniors

Caeden Knight, Neeshant Parik,

and Abraham Ferrell-Logan led the team in many statistical categories including yards passing, yards rushing, and tackles.

WINTER SPORTS REPORT

(as of mid January)

Wrestling

In Trinity’s second year of reviving the wrestling program, the team has a hybrid JV/varsity schedule. In the Titans’ first varsity tournament, The Cavalier Clash hosted by Caroline High School, the following wrestlers medaled: Josh Garber ’17 earned first place in the 120 pound weight class, Connor Ashley ’15 earned third place in the 126 pound weight class, Darryl Atkins ’16 placed third in the 160 pound weight class and Trevor Taylor ’17 placed second in the 182 pound weight class.

Girls Basketball

Girls basketball was 3-10 midseason, plagued by injuries, but still have a few good wins against Pope John Paul the Great and Colonial Heights High School. The biggest win thus far was against The Steward School. The team fell to them earlier in the season, but came back the second time and won by 17 points.

At mid-season, Maggie Mauck ’14 was chasing 1,000 points for her career at Trinity and has a shot at becoming the all-time leading scorer. Mauck began the season with 776 points. She is currently at 915. The school record is 1044 held by Karen Smith ’92.

Boys Basketball

Boys basketball was 10-5 overall against an incredibly challenging schedule. Mid-season highlights include wins over highly ranked Walsingham Academy (to win the Travis Invitational), Christchurch, and Matoaca, and

two wins each over in-town rivals St. Christopher’s and Collegiate. The team was undefeated in the Prep League at mid-season. The major highlight was a 68-63 win over national top 100 team (and #1 in Maryland), Mount St. Joseph from Baltimore. Josh Brown ’15 was all-tournament in the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament, and Abraham Ferrell-Logan ’14 was all-tournament in the Benedictine Capital City Classic.

Swimming and Diving

The swim and dive team finished the regular season 18-1 on the girls side and 19-1 on the boys side. The Titans beat the Collegiate boys and Saint Catherine’s for the first time in Trinity history. The team lost to St. Christopher’s and the Collegiate girls (scores were close), but beat Collegiate out right in combined points and lost to the Saints by only four points. The girls have been state runner-up twice, placed third last year and won the sportsmanship and spirit awards multiple times. “We’ve held state records, but we have not until this year been able to pull it all together and beat St. Catherine’s and Collegiate. It was an historic win!” said coach Alice Phillips. “No team records broken so far this season, but after breaking ten last year, it is going to be hard for us to make a lot of headway there,” said Phillips. “We are a young team, so we have some good years ahead of us.” Senior diver Keaton Busser took home her fourth consecutive LIS dive title and her brother Collin Busser ’15 finished second in the Prep League dive competition.

Indoor Track

The boys team was led by junior Jamie Hiegel and senior Elias Khoury. Hiegel won the 3200m at the Woodberry Forest Mini-Invitational and Khoury won the long jump in the Woodberry Forest meet and set a new school record in the 55m running 6.79. On the girls side, senior Molly Breidenbaugh won all six of her races this season and has state leading times of 5:02 and 10:55 in the 1600m and 3200m. Juniors Megan Martin and Kendall Daniels made key contributions in the girls jumps and sprints.

The boy’s varsity basketball team won the Prep League championship.
