1.3 Qualification Description

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who perform a limited range of tasks relating to identifying and inspecting mechanical and electrical components and systems of light vehicles, heavy vehicles, outdoor power equipment, bicycles, marine craft and motorcycles. This qualification also covers the skills and knowledge required to perform minor maintenance and repair of an automotive vehicle body. The range of technical skills and knowledge is limited.

4. Structure, Delivery and Assessment

4.1 Volume of Learning

Volume of Learning includes all activities required to be undertaken by the typical student to achieve learning outcomes. It is comprised of the Amount of Training + the Amount of Assessment + Unstructured Learning.

Amount of Training takes into consideration the existing skills, knowledge and experience of students, the mode of delivery, availability of resources and the number of units. It is the Structured Learning – formal learning activities, which may consist of:

• Lectures or tutorials, on-line tasks and forums

• Supervised activities

• Structured workplace activities

• Workshop activities

• Structured prescribed reading

• Prescribed follow-up activities

Unstructured Learning may include private study, assignment preparation, work experience and research.

5 Work Placement

As part of preparation for work placement TVET teachers and students will need to register at go2workplacement, and students will need to complete the mandatory modules.

Requirements of work place/supervisor:

Complete the work record book accurately and honestly and return to TAFE NSW via the learner – this work placement evidence supports the unstructured learning component.

Where applicable a copy of the completed workplace document record will be kept with the learner’s delivery and assessment records

Each delivery location, in this instance Shellharbour’s delivery workshop are a complete simulated workplace that complies with industry regulations

6.1

The simulated work environment, where applicable in the NESA syllabus, will be achieved by:

6.2

The Albury Automotive section has the following facilities and equipment to deliver and assess the performance and knowledge requirements of the qualification:

• Open workshop area with access for all vehicles.

• SWL rated hoists, jacking and supporting equipment to raise and lower vehicles

• Classrooms and computer laboratory for the delivery of the knowledge component of the package.

The following additional support is provided for this Student Group:

Students with education support needs may require adjustments to their training plans as well as additional time to develop the required level of competence. Reasonable (also referred to as allowable) adjustments are changes that are made to training and assessment conditions so that reasonable steps are taken to ensure that disability, illness or learning need does not affect performance. To achieve an AQF qualification, students must be able to safely demonstrate knowledge and skills at the level required for each unit of competency as defined in the relevant training package. Specific provisions for these students include:

Students with special education needs may access support through the following:

• specialist support staff, facilities and learning materials for students with disabilities.

• providing the opportunity to develop skills in real industry settings.

• providing a safe and healthy learning environment - both within TAFE and during work placement.

• counselling and careers advisory services.

• specialist staff to assist with language, literacy and numeracy skills.

• specialist support staff for ATSI students and students from non-English speaking backgrounds. Students also have access to libraries where they can borrow a range of resources and get personalised help from library support staff. Libraries also provide access to online resources (eBooks, eJournals, eVideos) that are available from any computer and most mobile devices. Free WiFi and charged printing and photocopying are also available.

10. Recognition processes and credit transfer

10.1

Recognition Processes

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students are able to have their competency from prior learning and work experience recognised in this qualification through the following arrangements.

• Evidence of completing formal training

• Work experience: on the job experience and informal training

• Life experience: community group involvement, family activities, sports, hobbies, leisure activities, unpaid work, organising events, and/or travel.

Applications for RPL will be assessed on an individual basis and may be granted when a portfolio of evidence is assessed in accordance with TAFE NSW Recognition Policy and Procedures and the student is deemed competent for the unit/s of competency for which the application applies. Alternatively, the student may nominate to undertake a challenge assessment for the opportunity to demonstrate competency.

Where the NESA syllabus includes mandatory work placement this requirement may also be met through RPL, subject to the requirements of the training package and NESA Recognition Rules.

10.2

Credit Transfer

Students may also apply for credit transfer upon enrolment. The same or equivalent units of competency previously completed through an Australian RTO may be credited towards the new qualification they enrol into.

In providing credit transfer the student should not be disadvantaged, units of competency that are exclusions for the TVET course must not be applied.

11. Transition Arrangements

Transition arrangements must be completed within 12 months of changes being published on training.gov.au for superseded qualifications and two years for deleted training products.

Students who will be affected may be notified however they cannot be transitioned contrary to the NESA Course (ICF Syllabus or BEC) requirements, which are typically updated at the change of school year. In the event that a student is transitioned subject to NESA requirements, they may complete the HSC examination in the course of initial enrolment.
