Faculty were actively engaged in a wide variety of fields that provided access to current, in-depth examples of reallife business. Rather than focusing on book knowledge, they encouraged us to use critical thinking in our coursework by using simulations and case studies. This was enhanced by small class sizes and easy access to professors outside of class time. Nina Klein, 2019

At TWU’s School of Business, we combine practical excellence in a faithbased context. Practical in terms of real-world business application; excellence in terms of quality of teaching and scholarship; and faith-based that gives context to how we manage our businesses and live our lives.

Q: Can you tell us about yourself and what drew you to the program you studied at TWU?
A: Hi, I'm Isabella. Everyone at Trinity Western calls me Izzy. I graduated from TWU with an honours degree in business, and I specialized in HR. What led me to my program was I started working in HR at a pretty young age, so I knew that was what I wanted to do.
I grew up between two cultures. My family emigrated from Colombia to Canada, and I loved being a part of both cultures and getting to experience calling two places home, but it also left me with a need and longing for belonging. In Colombia, my family had heard about TWU, and they had always wanted their kids to go to this university. When I came to Trinity Western, I was only planning on staying for one or two years, but I was so surprised by the people that I met and the warmness of the community. I found a place that had values that I could really resonate with. I'm so privileged to call Trinity Western University home, and I really am proud of the time that I had there.
Q: How did your time at TWU equip you to be the light?
A: The community was super supportive and empowering. I feel like it just comes back to people. God used people to pour into me and see my light, but I could then be made aware of it and show it. I think I was given a lot of confidence and joy in who God created me to be. And yes, that was from my personal relationship with the Lord, but it was from other people who again called that out and were able to uplift me during highs and lows in my degree.
Q: How has this impacted your career?
A: I work in human resources, and I love it. HR is more than hiring and firing. For me, it's about coaching and giving people the resources to succeed. It's actually really about discipleship and how I can empower others to become who God has created them to be. I deal with people walking through conflict and dark places, and I feel privileged to be a sort of comfort and light in situations that are difficult.
I enjoy walking alongside people in their employment journey and helping them feel at home because that was a big question mark for me growing up. So as an HR professional, I want to be someone who responds to people with kindness and warmth and who cares about their needs and helps people find their place.
Q: Can you share a transformational moment from your time at TWU?
A: I feel the most transformational impact was the support I had from my professors—my HR professors specifically. Jani McKay and Joan Deeks are just so gracious. It was a point in my life where some days were just very hard emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. I had so many conversations with those two professors and others who were very gracious. Our classes had no more than 15 people, and we would have conversations about faith, our life, prayer requests, and even things happening in the industry. They made such a holistic space for learning, where they really saw us as human beings.
And even now, I feel like I can just go to them with anything whether it's related to my career or my life. When I was trying to find a job, they were very helpful with their contacts. When I see them now that I’m a graduate, they still ask how my family is, so just like how Trinity Western has always felt like a safe space, they make me feel safe. I think my professors really had that kind of transformational impact on my career and personal life.
Q: If you could give one piece of advice to a prospective student considering TWU, what would it be?
A: It's very easy to just coast and go to classes and go home, but really invest in the people around you and in yourself. Sign up for things—go on a travel study. I went to Kenya. I met a lot of lifelong friends on that trip, and it was just the coolest experience. Because of that new experience, I got to add that perspective to my profession and learn about HR in a Kenyan context and with other people in business. I would say that TWU has so much to offer. Don't sit back.
