2024 Act Justly Award Recipient
Dr. Yolanda Hegngi
“Yolanda’s academic research continues to be a valuable resource, frequently cited by graduate and postgraduate students, while her successful professional track record has made her services highly sought after by global intuitions from around the world.”
AKLILU MULAT
Dr. Yolanda Nokuri Hegngi (’86, Psychology), a thirdgeneration educator from Cameroon, has distinguished herself through numerous professional and educational achievements, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to innovation, leadership, and the advancement of marginalized communities.
Yolanda was attracted to TWU because of her personal spiritual journey and her family’s long history of working with evangelical missionaries to Cameroon. At Trinity Western, she went on her first-ever missions trip to Cuernavaca, Mexico. She reflects on the generosity of the TWU family that helped her raise funding and the life-changing opportunity to serve local families, outside Mexico City.
In the mid-1990s, Yolanda emerged as a pioneer in e-learning. She was instrumental in the development and launch of Virginia Tech’s first online course in 1996, which formed the basis of her doctoral dissertation. Yolanda’s research in e-learning continues to remain influential in academic pursuits.
Yolanda’s expertise in educational technology and her pioneering spirit led her to the World Bank, where she played a critical role in establishing the Global Distance Learning Network (GDLN). This initiative aimed to bridge educational gaps across the globe, providing access to quality education in remote and underserved regions. Her work also resulted in co-authored publications and the development of pivotal training programs.
In 2010, Yolanda and her family founded two bilingual primary schools in Limbe, Cameroon. Despite facing significant political, economic, and social challenges, these schools have thrived, providing vital educational opportunities to the local community. Yolanda has also established a consulting practice focused on leadership development and business strategy, serving a diverse range of institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Through her pioneering work, Yolanda has made incalculable contributions to the global community.

Victoria Suen
“In the face of adversity, Victoria’s faith and confidence in the Lord have been a rock to her and those around her.”
AMY SAYA
Victoria Suen (’20, Education) has demonstrated a remarkable blend of professional and educational success in her young career. Throughout the past four years, she has impacted the children of the Dominican Republic, where she serves as the director of the Descubre Ingles (Discover English) program. This program, which began with fewer than 30 children, has grown to educate over 150 students under her leadership and guidance.
Victoria’s achievements are highlighted by her innovative approach to integrating Scriptural content into her lesson plans, enhancing her students’ academic experience and fostering their spiritual growth. She often volunteers in her free time, teaching the Bible, art, and basic literacy to children in a separate ministry that provides free access to education to some of the most vulnerable and marginalized children in the area.
Despite the directorial role, Victoria often supports her team with administrative tasks, lesson planning, and even weekly teaching. She also invests in the professional development of local teachers, providing them with training and employment opportunities, which further strengthens the educational infrastructure of the region.
Victoria is known for her hospitality, often opening her home to provide students a safe space to have fun, grow, and enrich friendships. Her success is deeply intertwined with her dedication to the Great Commission as she expands educational programs and restlessly demonstrates the heart of a servant leader to significantly impact the community.
