News and Awards 2010 DUCE AWARD HONORS DAVID R. WHITE Every year, the HCAD Alumni Association honors an alumnus who has made significant contributions to the field of health care administration. The 2010 recipient of the Dean Duce Award was David R. White ’73. White is chairman of the IASIS Healthcare Board of Directors in Franklin, Tennessee. White retired as chief executive officer of IASIS, a post he held for 10 years. Under his leadership, IASIS saw its revenue triple and won two Thomson Reuters Health Care Advantage Awards. The awards recognize hospitals that use data analytics to improve the quality of care and business results. White also oversaw massive improvements to the system’s health care information technology. Prior to running IASIS, White served as CEO of LifeTrust America Inc., managing 55 assisted living communities. He was also president of the Atlantic Group of Columbia/HCA, overseeing 43 hospital operations in nine states. Prior to that post, he served as executive VP and COO of Community Health Systems. The Duce Award is named for the late Leonard A. Duce, a former professor in the program and the first dean of the graduate school at Trinity University.
ROBERT SHAW RECEIVES 2011 DUCE AWARD The 2011 recipient of the Duce Award was Robert N. Shaw, FACHE, ’69, ’72. Shaw is currently the president of Norton Cancer Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. His career, however, spans over 40 years in health care administration. Prior to his position with Norton, Shaw was executive VP and COO of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio. After graduation, Shaw continued his active role in the health care administration program and in the Trinity community at large. He is currently on Trinity’s Board of Visitors and has previously served as the chair of the National Alumni Board. In the health care administration department, Shaw has served as an executive-in-resident, held an adjunct faculty position, and was the driving force behind the program’s capital campaign.
QUINT STUDER KEYNOTES LEADERS IN HEALTH MANAGEMENT SYMPOSIUM Quint Studer, founder of Studer Group, the 2010 Baldrige National Quality Award winner, was the 2011 Leadership in Health Management Symposium’s keynote speaker. Held on Friday, October 28, 2011, the Symposium was a standing-room-only success. Members of the local health care community converged on the Trinity campus, joining faculty, staff, and students from both the Trinity HCAD program and Army Baylor. Studer Group was gracious enough to provide everyone in the audience with a free copy of Studer’s book Straight A Leadership. The HCAD students also had the privilege of having a pizza lunch and a question and answer session with Studer after his address. The Leaders in Health Management Symposium is one of the Center for Leadership Development’s efforts to provide continuing professional education for students, alumni, and friends.
