Brothers Walk Two Paths at Trinity University Opportunities in chemistry, music give both Cipolla siblings space to shine

Nick and Jake Cipolla, brothers from Houston attending Trinity University, have set out on their own unique paths in music and chemistry.

Nick ’25, a senior chemistry major, has been delving into fluorogenic polymerizations under the mentorship of chemistry professor Christina Cooley since his first year at Trinity. His hands-on research experience has been

transformative, fueling his ambition to become a professor.

“I get a say in what kind of science we do, in how to move the project forward. That really is different than at other universities, where you may be working under a graduate student or under a postdoc,” Nick says. “And I do think that that is definitely going to set me apart moving forward.”

Jake ’26, a junior music education major, has discovered a passion for conducting and spent Summer 2024 researching a centuries-old religious manuscript under the mentorship of music professor Kimberlyn Montford. He’s deeply involved in Trinity’s music scene, participating in the Chamber Singers, music directing, and more.

“I love just being involved as much as I can in the music department and the theatre department because, at a lot of schools, you can only be a theatre major or only be a music major,” Jake says.

And, despite their different focuses, the brothers occasionally cross paths on campus—particularly in the music building or performance halls, where Nick plays French horn in the Trinity Symphony Orchestra and Jake sings in the choir.

For the Cipolla brothers, Trinity’s small, liberal arts environment has proved to be just the right size to make them both confident in their college choice.

“I am a hundred percent, a thousand, a million, whatever-numbers-are-bigger-than-that-percent, glad that Trinity is the choice that I made,” Nick says. “This place has given me so many opportunities that I wouldn’t have gotten at other schools.”

“I’m seeing a difference in the education I’m getting at Trinity, both in terms of my skill set in music and for my career,” Jake adds.

Trinity business student explores a rich culture, participates in an internship, and gains credit hours

This past summer, business administration major Ify Ikenga ’24 was one of 18 students who studied abroad in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, through the faculty-led Trinity in Vietnam program. Over the course of five weeks, Ify dived deep into Vietnam’s rich history, culture, society, and delicious food while participating in a hands-on internship.

“Vietnam was transformational,” Ify says.

“It opened my eyes to not only Vietnamese history and heritage but also learning more about my place in the world and how I can use my platform to help change other people’s lives.”

As an international student from Nigeria, Ify knew that studying abroad was something he wanted to do as part of his college experience. During his time at Trinity, Ify had already served as the president of the African Student Organization, head social chair of the Black Student Union, and a student-athlete on the men’s track and field team, but he knew that studying abroad would give him a unique chance to “experience another culture on another side of the world.”

At first, Ify was a bit hesitant because of the cost, but thanks to Trinity’s robust financial aid resources for studying abroad, he received the support he needed to make his trip possible.

“Trinity really does a great job of making [studying abroad] accessible to every student on this campus,” Ify says. “The fact that we can receive funding for trips like this is such an amazing experience.”

The summer Trinity in Vietnam program proved to be a great opportunity for a busy student like Ify to make studying abroad possible while also receiving class credit. During his time in Vietnam, Ify interned with a software development company, helping them expand by doing business development and helping him gain real-world career experience while earning four upper-division credit hours.

“One of the really interesting things about studying abroad is it forces you to get outside of your comfort zone,” Ify says.

“I really feel like that’s the best way to grow as a person.”

In her role as an associate talent acquisition and university relations recruiter for Valero, Ashlyn Zatopek ’23 draws on the lessons of teamwork she learned during her time at Trinity.

Discovering a Career Through Experiential Learning Trinity alumna shares how a hands-on learning experience prepared her to enter the workforce ready to thrive

When San Antonio native Ashlyn Zatopek ’23 transferred to Trinity University in her sophomore year, she said “yes” to a spot on a strong soccer team and a place in an inviting community. Little did she know that just a few years later, her hands-on learning experience at Trinity would land her a job where she would get to help one of the largest companies in the world say “yes” to new employees.

Ashlyn is now an associate talent acquisition and university relations recruiter for Valero, a role that she got a glimpse of during her time at Trinity.

During the summer before her senior year, Ashlyn gained real-world experience at Valero as a talent management intern, where she learned firsthand about the importance of data in driving decision-making.

“The whole internship was extremely valuable. I loved every minute of it. It reaffirmed not only my wanting to be in HR but also my wanting to work for Valero,” Ashlyn says. “It was really cool to see work from business analytics classes in action in the internship, and it worked the other way around, too, because what I learned from that internship helped me in my classes my senior year.”

Ashlyn carried her experience from this internship with her through the completion of her human resource major. A newer offering from Trinity’s AACSB-accredited Neidorff School of Business, the human resource management major gave Ashlyn an interdisciplinary degree path with invaluable professional experience and networking built in along the way.

“I was blessed to learn from faculty who have unrivaled industry insight,” Ashlyn says. “It’s been really special to have those faculty relationships continue even after graduation.”

Along with her education, she carries lessons of teamwork and cultivating relationships from her time at Trinity that help her succeed in her role as an associate talent acquisition and university relations recruiter for Valero.

“In the professional world, you’re working with your team every single day as you build these relationships,” Ashlyn says. “At Valero, we’re a team, and as HR professionals, we usually get to make that first impression as someone is getting to know the company.

I love it.”

We know how important hands-on experience is in preparing our students for their careers. That’s why we help our students discover, apply, and succeed in internships throughout the academic year and summer.

Trinity-Sponsored Internship Programs Sponsored interns are paid a stipend, receive free housing on campus, participate in professional development, receive one credit hour, and present at the Summer Research and Internship Symposium.

International Internships Through qualifying study abroad programs, students can intern with nonprofit and business organizations across the world, becoming better global citizens and growing their career experience.

Internship Credit Internship courses can be found throughout Trinity departments, and students can earn up to six academic credits for internships that complement their academic program.

Internship Search Discover internships through Handshake, Trinity’s job and internship database. Attend Fall and Spring Career & Internship Fairs, and meet with career advisers. Talk to faculty about their connections with businesses and nonprofit organizations. Network!
