Already Thriving Trinity first-year takes advantage of a close-knit campus with endless opportunities

Meet Hayden Le ’28, a first-year Tiger from Bellevue, Washington, who’s thriving at Trinity.

In her few short months on campus, Hayden already channeled her passion for athletics into an exciting career path in sports marketing and media. From a young age, Hayden was captivated by the intensity and dedication of athletes she saw on TV, especially during the Olympics. This fascination led her to participate in swimming and competitive cheer, where she experienced firsthand the drive and hard work that fuels athletic success.

Within this deep connection to sports, Hayden found her calling in the power of social media. She’s eagerly pursuing a major in business marketing and a minor in sport management and is looking forward to the opportunities these fields offer. Her involvement in Trinity’s Prowlers Dance Team and Athletes in Action, coupled with her role as a marketing assistant in Trinity’s Center for Experiential Learning and Career Success (CELCS), allows her to merge her love for athletics with her skills in TV production and social media.

From her first steps on campus, Hayden knew Trinity was the perfect place for her. “I was amazed by the community and all of the support and opportunities students had,” she says. “Working in the CELCS office and getting real-life experience will be invaluable for the different aspects of media and its influence.”

One Giant Microscope, “Minnie” Possibilities State-of-the-art device brings bright future for research at Trinity into focus

Meet “Minnie”—Trinity University’s new, powerful, lab-sized microscope that’s already adding a fresh lens to research projects across campus.

Thanks to a $580,000 gift from the Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelcker Fund, this Nikon NSPARC confocal microscope is ready for use by about 10 research teams

on campus. According to chemistry professor and chair Corina Maeder ’99, the device is a testament to Trinity’s status as a small school where big-time science happens.

“The funding recognizes that Trinity is truly a gem—a place where top research is happening,” says Professor Maeder, who studies a rare eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa with the device. “Our science facilities are amazing! The instrumentation that we have parallels that of research-level institutions.”

Tigers Cadence McCammack ’26 and Amanda Flanagan ’25 can each attest to this type of microscope’s transformative effect on the student research experience.

Amanda, a biology major from San Antonio, says the microscope is a tremendous resource for an undergraduate to have.

“I feel incredibly grateful to be working with something like this,” she says. “I feel like if I was at a bigger university, the labs would be filled with people that are above you. They’re going to be filled with master’s students or students working on their Ph.D. But me—I’m leading my own project right now. I’m out there on a confocal microscope, and I’m not a postdoc.”

Cadence, a biology major from Dallas who works with Professor Maeder on the retinitis pigmentosa project, wants to eventually become a physician who combines patient care with cutting-edge research.

“I think it is amazing that we have the STEM resources we do at a small liberal arts school like Trinity,” Cadence says. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to use such a cutting-edge tool as the confocal microscope because having access to these resources is equipping me with skills and experience that will be vital for my future career success.”

Envision Your Own Trip Abroad

Journey(s) of a Lifetime Trinity senior reflects on his two study abroad trips

Meet Dario Leal ’25, a political science and economics major and philosophy minor who spent Fall 2024 studying abroad at King’s College London!

Dario took the metro every day to get to his university. His courses were composed of two weekly meetings, one dedicated to lectures and the other reserved for small seminars and discussion-based activities. As a prospective law student, he especially enjoyed his discussion classes as he felt they were a great insight into law school.

Between classes, Dario spent his time at cafes preparing his law school applications, working on LSAT questions, or doing readings for his classes. “After class, I’d go back to my flat and work out. After my workout, I usually made dinner with my friend Moises, who also attends Trinity,” he says. “During the weekends, I liked traveling or going to football matches!”

Dario’s favorite thing about London is the people. “It is very diverse, with people from all over the world. Every friend I’ve made offers unique and interesting perspectives,” he says.

This was Dario’s second time studying abroad. In Summer 2023, Dario participated in Trinity’s Madrid Summer Internship Program, where he worked at a hotel company. During his internship he learned about problemsolving and gained firsthand insight into how a large company manages

its finances. During the weekends, Dario not only explored the beautiful city of Madrid but also took part in field trips organized by Trinity.

“Navigating Madrid by myself and traveling through Spain prepared me to embark on a journey of a lifetime,” he says. “My experiences abroad have definitely made me a much more independent person. I have met so many people from distinct backgrounds, and I feel more comfortable conversing with different people.”

Dario advises anyone interested in studying abroad to not worry so much about it. “These are opportunities we might only have once in our lives, and it would be a shame to live with the ‘what if,’” he says. “I can’t stress enough how much I’ve enjoyed seeing the world, and I want others to share this experience.”
