POPSICLES IN THE PARK

Don’t be out singing the summer blues. Monday Madness brings in educational entertainers for you and your kids. Each summer The Parks and Recreation Department along with the Sherman Library host fantastic shows to engage your children and brighten up their week. This year we have brought back a couple of crowd favorites, but we are also introducing some new acts that we are sure you are going to love. All acts will be free for everyone, however, we will have concessions on sight for a nominal charge. Dates and acts: June 4- Pipdillys- The Musical Trickolini June 11- Critterman- Explore and play with critters from all over June 18- Professor Brainius Show- You will be so entertained you will forget that you are learning science. Summers can get hot, that’s why we have stocked up our freezer full of popsicles for you and your family to cool off this summer. Don’t let the heat be the reason that you are not outside enjoying the park. Come cool off with a tasty cold treat and hit the park again. We will have three different locations this summer with special games to play at the park.

Summer 2018 WATER BALLOON FIGHT We are bringing back an old school summer activity of the Water Balloon Fight. Fill up your own water balloons and bring them with you. When we announce go, an all-out war will begin as you get to chunk water balloons at your friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers. Leave the park that night soaking wet and full of fun memories. Baxter’s Back to School Birthday Bash

Wanting to have a family night, but don’t know what to do? We have you covered. Come out to the Parks and Recreation Department, where we will have board games, fun activities, music, and movies and fresh popcorn for the family to enjoy. All this is free from 6PM- 9PM. Have dinner plans already? That’s ok. You can always come after to this come and go event.

Baxter is have a birthday and wants to invite all his friends! At this birthday celebration, you can meet Baxter and all of his other mascot friends as they play field day games, play on bounce houses, and get you excited to return back to school for a new year! You can even win cool prizes to get you ready to go back to school prepared like new notebooks and pens and pencils. Come celebrate his birthday with us at Fairview Park from 9AM-12PM. HAWN SPRAYGROUND

HAWN PARK RIBBON CUTTING

The Sprayground is a perfect way to beat the heat this summer. The water features will be turned on from 9AM-8PM this Spring, Summer, and Fall. We will turn the water off when the weather changes and becomes too cold to play in the water. When you go out to play, simply bump the top of the red bumper located in front of the rainbow sprayer. The play features are on a timer, so you might have to push the bumper again to continue playing in the water.

Celebrate with us the newest addition to Hawn Park. With the generous financial support of the Sherman Rotary Club, we were able to build a new playground on the southwest corner of Hawn Park. With their donation, several kids now have a brand new playground in the middle of their neighborhood. Join us as Sherman Parks and Recreation and Sherman Rotary Club cut the ribbon on this new playground. Date: TBA Time: 5:30PM Location: Hawn Park South West Corner

Sherman Parks & Recreation CLASSES JAZZERCISE Burn up to 600 calories in one fun and powerfully effective 60-minute total body workout. Every Jazzercise group dance fitness class combines dance-based cardio with strength training and stretching to sculpt, tone and lengthen muscles for maximum fat burn. Choreographed to today’s hottest music, Jazzercise is a fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, and kickboxing. Start dancing yourself fit and change the shape of your body today!

ATS BELLY DANCING You can expect an engaging, fun, supportive and challenging atmosphere in class. ATS is a low-impact weight bearing form of exercise that works with the body’s natural inclinations to strengthen and condition the body. Using both slow movements and fast steps, we will have you dancing in your first class! This class has plenty of review built in; therefore, you may drop in at any time. SKATING FOR FITNESS

SHIMMY IN THE PARK

Skating is the perfect form of exercise and fun. Lindsey Manley, a former Roller Derby skater, is here to teach you all the basics and to be your coach in skating for fitness. Her class uses different techniques to work out your entire body. Through this class you will learn proper techniques for falling and gliding. This class is free for everyone, but you must provide your own quad skates (no inline), pads, and helmet.

Calling all belly dancers, past and present, dance enthusiast, and those looking for an afternoon of fun. Come join us as we dance the afternoon away. This is your chance to see American Tribal Style Belly Dance® up close and personal. Feel free to ask questions, join in and have fun with us.

DANCE FITNESS Breaking the mode of your typical dance fitness class, Sarah Pierce is incorporating 6 plus years of Group X Instructing, Zumba, U-Jam, Yoga Stretch, Bootcamp, R.I.P.P.E.D, TRX, and more, to create a fusion of techniques from these different styles. Mondays and Tuesdays will focus on Dance, and H.I.I.T. fitness with a high calorie burn. Thursdays will focus on yoga stretch, core focused, and barre poses to strengthen the core. SHUTTERBUG CLUB

The mystery of magic has always been intriguing to people. It has the ability to impress and confuse people at the same time. The Art of Magic is being taught by a true professional within our community. Practicing magic for over 13 years Rudy Reynoso will grow your magic skills quickly. This eight week class will go over the history, evolution, and performance of magic. Each student will leave the class learning several magic tricks and the art of showmanship. Each student will need to bring their own normal deck of bicycle cards to class.

Get creative and start capturing what your eyes see. Join us in this free club that meets the fourth Monday of the month. Each month there is a photography assignment. We will discuss pictures that are submitted and learn from each other how to take better photographs. The upcoming assignments are:

What kid doesn’t love getting a little messy? Bring the little ones to work on craft projects that they can be proud to bring home. Each class will have a specifically designed project to inspire the young ones to get creative.

Love playing on the playground? So do we! There are more things to do at a park than just playing on the playground. During the summer, we will be out at different parks throughout the city playing games and exploring other fun activities. Register early, and get a T-shirt as part of the Sherman Kids Park Club.

MONEY: YOU HAVE IT BUT YOU WANT MORE

Feel like you are stuck in your job? Or are you looking for a better way to show the skills that you do possess? iMar can help make that transition for you. Derrick Wesley can be your coach to developing those skills that are inside of you and what employers are looking for. In this class Derrick will help develop the “Big 6” skill that employers are looking for: Creative Problem Solving, Analytical Thinking, Collaboration, Leadership Skills, Communication Skills, and Social & Emotional Intelligence.

Money can be challenging, especially if you do not have the right resources to help. You might feel like you are always behind on your bills, or you want to save money, but you just don’t know where to start. In this class taught by Stephen Newton, a local finance guru, you will learn the secret to successful money matters. He will cover topics such as Paying Yourself First, Paying off Debt, Becoming an Owner and Not a Loaner, and many more. He is offering his class at a reduced price because he wants Sherman to be healthy with their finances. If you want to finally get financially smart, then this is the class for you.

The group meets at Glennie O’ Ham once a month to discuss topics relating to ancestry. Speed is needed in every game. If your kids are into sports, and they need to get faster, this is the exact program for them. This camp will not be sport specific; the techniques learned in this program will be beneficial for all sports and getting your child faster.

Football season is rapidly approaching‌ Will your child be ready to put on the pads? This camp will help develop fundamentals like carrying the ball properly, defeating blocks, taking proper angles with and without the ball, as well as overall speed on the field.

This league offers girls aged 10-12 the opportunity to learn the basics of volleyball and will prepare them to play at the middle school level. Soccer is one of the fastest growing sports, and here in Sherman it is no surprise we are keeping up with that trend. Drills learned in this camp will focus on ball handling, speed, and will improve overall performance on the soccer field.

Dribbling up and down the court can be so boring, but with this camp kids will do fun drills that will develop their speed with and without the ball. Being able to beat your opponent to a spot will make you a better player.

TENNIS It’s time that people take Sherman Tennis serious. The only way that is going to happen is for our kids to get better at tennis. We have a tennis pro working with our youth to see that they are ready to compete at that next level. Getting practice for your kids early will greatly increase their chances of higher level competition. Did you know we have a major level disc golf course right here in Sherman? Pecan Grove West is home to an 18-hole disc golf course. If you can throw a Frisbee, you can play disc golf. You will forget you are in Sherman when you play a round here. The Parks and Recreation office has discs for rent for people who want to try out the sport.

SKATE PARK RENOVATIONS

This fun game uses the skills of table tennis on a full size court. Opponents can compete in pairs using a paddle and a whiffle ball. Don’t have your own paddle? Don’t worry we have a couple you can borrow to try the sport out.

We are excited that the City of Sherman will have a new Skate Park by the end of the year! After having a community meeting with the design firm, construction will start this summer at Hawn Park.

On May 3 SPA will come back to Sherman to give their design of the new skate park. This will be your first opportunity to see the new skate design and give any last minute input. Lifeguards aren’t the only ones being heroes today. We will have live superheroes to take pictures and play games with. Dress up as your favorite superhero and receive a discount on your entry. All capes must be taken off before entering the water.

Dads, we know how hard you work, and we want to reward you for all that you do. So bring your kids to the pool and get in free. What could be more relaxing than sitting by the pool side and soaking up the sun? Free entry for fathers is only available with the purchase of one entry.

Fourth of July Star Spangled Celebration at Fairview Park features discounted $2 pool admission. Freedom activities will be going on throughout the entire day. We will have an ample supply of cold fresh watermelon for you and your family to enjoy as we all celebrate Independence Day.

To celebrate Shark week, The Splash is having their own shark day! Don’t worry, no real sharks will be in the pool on this day, but we will have lots of shark themed games to be play for everyone. Come swim with the sharks!

LIFEGUARD APPRECIATION AND DEMONSTRATION- JULY 25

FLOAT YOUR BOAT CARDBOARD RACES- AUGUST. 8

Lifeguards do more than just sit outside and get great tans. Here at Sherman we hire the best lifeguards, and they want to show off their skills. If you or your kids have ever thought about becoming a lifeguard, this is a perfect opportunity to see exactly what that means. The day will be filled with live CPR and rescue demonstrations.

Make your very own boat and sail it across the seas of the Splash. This two man team event will take place at 9AM. Your boat can only consist of cardboard and duct tape. Register before Aug. 5 to make sure your boat can sail with us. Kids younger than 6 can bring their own plastic boats to play with. Deadline to Register- August 5 Price: $12 Age Groups: 6-8, 9-12, 13-17, or 18+

LAST DAY OF THE SPLASHAUGUST 12 This is always a sad moment for us, but all things must come to an end. The perfect way to end a summer is of course with free snacks. This summer, before you go back to school, come out to Splash For Cash. Tokens will be placed throughout the pool, and if you get one, you can redeem it for a free snack in the concession stand.

SOGGIE DOGGIE- AUGUST 18 Summers can be hot for your favorite pooch too. Let’s not forget about him this summer. Bring your dog out to this splash this summer to help us close down for the season. Each dog that enters must have a valid and upto-date shot record from the vet (rabies tags alone will not suffice). Owners will be allowed in water no deeper than their knees. You can pre-register at the Parks and Recreation office. Owners must pay a $5 fee per dog. Your dog must be at least 6 months old.

Registration by Wednesday, May 17th, is appreciated but not required.

Grab a partner and join us for our annual Spades Tournament. Teams will be composed of two players (you must have your own partner when registering). Father’s Day is the third Sunday in June and we will be hosting a pool tournament for the men. All men, father or not, are invited to enter this annual event. Everyone is encouraged to come join us for refreshments and cheer on your favorite pool player. Registration is required by Thursday, June 14th.

Bring the grandchildren and join the Sherman Senior Center as we play outdoor games and enjoy a free lunch of hot dogs, chips and a drink. Let’s stroll down memory lane (or for those too young to recall, just come make a great memory) at our annual Senior Sock Hop with music provided by the talented 50s cover band, Tommy and the Dee Wops. Refreshments will be served, door prizes given away, and a photo booth available to capture your fun evening. Fifties attire is optional, but we will be awarding prizes for the best male and female 50s look. Registration is requested, but not required.
