Sherman Parks & Recreation SPECIAL EVENTS Arts Fest / Youth Art Show

Kid’s Fishing Derby

In conjunction with Sherman’s ArtsFest, we will have a youth Art Show. The show is open to all kids under the age of 18. Art will be showed in the Municipal Building during the event. Judging will be based on the child’s age group. All submissions must be made no later than 5PM on Monday September 16 to the Parks and Recreation office. All must lay completely flat. Participants can pick up their artwork at 3PM at the Municipal Building, or at the Parks and Recreation office Monday – Friday after the event is over.

Are you ready for a “reel” good time? Join us at Herman Baker Park on October 5th. Our kids fishing Derby will be complete with games, door prizes, lunch, and of course fishing. Everyone is encouraged to come out and fish in the lake. If you are a first time fisherman, or you have fished your entire life, we want you to experience the outdoors. We will have staff available for first timers, or even those that have trouble. Limited bait will be available, so please bring your own.

Movie In The Park

Mother Son Skate

Scare school is in session! Meet Sully and Mike Wazowski as they enter into college and learn everything there is to know about scaring. In the movie Monster University, our favorite two monsters meet each other and form a great friendship, but not without hardship first. Join us for a Monster themed Movie in the Park at Pecan Grove West.

Dads sometimes always have all the fun. Not this weekend! We have marked our calendars for the Mother Son Skate. This event is exclusively for moms who want bonding time with their boys. We will have refreshments and prizes that can be won, not to mention the photo booth filled with wacky costumes to make the night unforgettable. Quad skates are included, for the night, but you can upgrade to inline skates for a small fee.

Fall 2019 Special Needs Fall Festival Please come and enjoy face painting, crafts, ball toss, bowling, duck fishing, cake walk, food, prizes, pumpkin painting, numerous games, and more. Cost: FREE. Bring your cameras and capture fun memories with your family. The Fall Festival is a collaborative effort of many community organizations that serve children with special needs and their families. If you are an agency that provides services to children with special needs and would like to participate in the Fall Festival by providing a game and prizes for this event and share information about your services and supports to children and family, we would love for you to participate, email rachelb@cityofsherman and she will send you information regarding how to get involved. Family Night Hike

Ugly Christmas Sweater Paw-ty

The weather is starting to cool off and you can enjoy being outside so much more. Our Family Nike Hike will travel around Herman Baker Park Lake. Hikers are encouraged to travel by map and try to find hidden gems throughout placed by our Parks and Recreation Staff. After the hike is complete join the rest of the parks and recreation staff and other hikers by the fire for some s’mores.

With the holidays right around the corner, everyone is throwing a Ugly Sweater Party, but have you have had an ugly sweater party with your dog? Dress your dogs up in the ugliest sweaters you can find and frolic with us at the Dog Park. We will have a contest for the best ugly sweater for large dogs, small dogs, owners, and owner/ dog couple.

Wreaths Across America Each year, Wreaths Across America coordinates wreath laying in front of soldier’s graves. This organization has been remembering, honoring, and teaching of the sacrifice our brave soldiers for many years. This year Westhill Cemetery will be one of the 1,600 commentaries participating in this program. Please come out and pay your respects to those that made a great sacrifice for our country. Enjoy reading? So do we! We would love to get to connect with you and read the things that you are interested in. Be a part of the Literati Book Club and read books with other people and discuss themes of the books. The Club meets the second Tuesday of the month. The book list is as follows:

Photography is the name of the game. Join us in this free club that meets the fourth Monday of the month. Each month there is a photography assignment. We will discuss pictures that are submitted and learn from each other how to take better photographs. The upcoming assignments are:

Jazzercise

Sticky Fingers

What kid doesn’t love getting a little messy? Bring the little ones to work on craft projects that they can be proud to bring home. Each class will have a specifically designed project to inspire the young ones to get creative. This course is offered once month and class are held on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s.

Bow Hunter Education

Hunter Education

Do you enjoy the added challenge of hunting with a bow instead of a firearm? This class is designed specifically for you. Learn how to properly care for your equipment and the best practices when hunting with a bow. It is strongly encouraged to take a safety class before hunting so that you are prepared in any situation.

Ready to start hunting? You first need to learn safety and proper ways to hunt. By taking the hunter education course, students can learn the best practices in hunting, how to stay safe, and how to have the most fun. This course is designed for every hunting ability and is encouraged before picking up your firearm.

ATS Belly Dancing You can expect an engaging, fun, supportive and challenging atmosphere in class. ATS is a low-impact weight bearing form of exercise that works with the body’s natural inclinations to strengthen and condition the body. Intro classes present the basic ATS vocabulary. Students will follow the instructor as they learn and refine movements during a six week period. Using both slow movements and fast steps, we’ll get you dancing in your first class! This class has plenty of review built in; therefore you may drop in at any time. Students should wear yoga pants and a comfortable tee shirt. Your sisters in dance welcome you with open arms! Sherman Parks & Recreation ...CLASSES Highland Dance Highland Dancing is native to Scotland. It is a vigorous form of dance requiring great strength and agility. Initial classes will focus on basic dance skills and technique. Students will learn the Highland Fling, the Sword Dance, and other traditional dances as they progress. Previous dance experience is not required, but would be helpful! Students already familiar with Highland Dance will have the opportunity to learn new steps and dances. More experienced students will have the opportunity to take exams, do performances, and compete at Highland Gatherings. Skateboarding Clinic

This nationally recognized early childhood music and movement program is for children newborn to 5 and the adults who love them. In these classes, children participate together with their parents and caregivers. The mixed age classes allow sibling to attend together, encourage family bonding, and offer a rich social context for music learning. Weekly the kids and adults will explore music with singing, creative movements, rhythm play, and instrumental jam sessions with rhythm sticks, egg shakers, resonator bells, gathering drums, and more.

Were you there when we opened the new skate park? Wish you were a little better at skating? Sean Tumey, a local skateboarder is offering his time to teach the youth skateboarding basics and etiquette. Once a month everyone will meet at the skate park, and as a group, will develop better as a skater and a person. This free clinic is geared towards improving the skating community and developing youth right here in Sherman!

Sherman STEM

Lifeguard Training

Exploring science encourages kids to be creative and learn. Our STEM program encourages students to apply information learned in our school system with ordinary objects. Kids will get to be hands on with science and not just in a book. Each week difference we will have different experiments that will teach aspects of science, technology, engineering, and math.

American Red Cross lifeguard must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class, and pass a precourse swimming skills test prior to taking our courses. Once students are enrolled, they’ll receive the latest science-based training from experienced instructors, and develop skills they’ll use for a lifetime. This course is a blended Simulation Learning experience, which combines online coursework with in-person skills sessions. In addition to full the full course, abbreviated recertification course ($75) is also available for those who hold current lifeguarding certifications.

Sonata: Music in the Library

Our Storytime is full of books, music, puppets, and finger plays. Kids earn new paperbacks every 4th week. Older and younger children are welcome to attend: however, the free books are reserved for children 18 months-5 years old.

Kids will learn to read music and how to play the violin. There is no cost for this program, but space is limited. Reservations are required. We will begin to take reservations at 9:00AM on Tuesday September 3, 2019. Tri-County Senior Fishing Festival

Ladies Pool Tournament

The annual Tri-County Senior Fishing Festival is planned for Friday, September 20, 2019. This event is open to any resident of Cooke, Fannin or Grayson Counties (fifty years of age or older as of September 20, 2019). There are fishing contests, a casting contest, door prizes awarded and lunch is served. For more information or a registration form contact the Sherman Senior Center.

We will again be having our annual Ladies Pool Tournament. This year’s event will be held on Friday, September 27, 2019, at 12:30 p.m. If you are interested in participating please contact the senior center office to register by Tuesday, September 24th.

Socktober

Halloween Hoopla

Did you know each night in the United States an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets? This month the Senior Center will be participating in “Socktober”. “Socktober” was created by Brad Montague to get kids and grown-ups to help the homeless in an easy and fun way. Here’s how you can help: bring a NEW, UNUSED pair of socks to the center office and drop them in our donation box. Encourage all your friends and family to join in our collection of socks as well. We will be delivering them to our local shelters the end of the month.

This annual event, formerly titled Trunk or Treats, is always a fun filled afternoon for seniors. Local organizations and businesses set up booths with information and door prizes. Halloween candy and treats will be passed out from each booth as well. We will have musical entertainment and lots of fun. Free to all seniors age 50+. Mark your calendar to attend on Friday, October 25th, from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. in the Municipal Ballroom. Door prize winners do not have to be present at time of drawing to be eligible to win.

Pumpkin Carving / Decorating Contest It is time again for our annual pumpkin carving and decorating contest. Pumpkins must be carved/decorated at the center on Monday, October 28th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. This will allow you to take your pumpkin home and have it on display for Halloween. If you are interested in entering the contest you must sign up in the office at the center no later than Wednesday, October 23rd. Prizes awarded to the top three pumpkins. Turkey Shoot Our annual “Turkey Shoot” will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, 10:00 a.m. As always, this will be lots of fun with prizes awarded to the best shooters. DECEMBER Center Christmas Party

New Year’s Eve Celebration

Time to start the holiday season off with our Center Christmas Party. This year’s event will be on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring finger foods (meaning no silverware required) to share with the group. Your Advisory Council will sponsor bingo games. Rather than exchange gifts we will again be collecting items to donate to local nursing homes. A visit from the “big guy in red” is expected and you may be able to have your photo taken with him.

We will celebrate and bring in 2020 a little earlier than most, our party to ring in the New Year will be at noon on Tuesday, December 31st, 2019. As always, we will have “faux” champagne, noisemakers, hats, etc. to toast the New Year. Come join the fun and say Happy New Year to your friends at the senior center.

This is a safe, family-friendly, fun trick-or-treating event to kick off your Halloween and let your kiddos show off their great costumes! The evening is filled with local businesses set up in the streets, handing out candy to all the little ghouls and boys. Come celebrate the season with us!
