This October, Norwich Theatre is celebrating Black History Month with a diverse lineup of events that honour Black stories, voices, and history. From thought-provoking plays to engaging workshops, there's something for everyone to experience.
Wendy Ellis, Creative Programmes & Audiences Director at Norwich Theatre, said: "Theatres offer a unique space to connect with others, gain a deeper understanding of different perspectives and build compassion. This month, we're celebrating the incredible contributions of Black creatives and reminding ourselves that these stories matter year-round."
Inspired by the extraordinary life of Nina Simone Black is the Color of My Voice (5 – 6 Oct) at Norwich Theatre Playhouse reflects on the journey that took Nina from a young piano prodigy destined for a life in the service of the church to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.
Explore Stories that Move: A Family Dance Workshop (30 Oct) during the October halfterm. In this creative family workshop using pictures, poetry, stories, and music, we will celebrate the huge contributions and cultural impact made by the Windrush Generation and their families, shaping the Britain we know today.
The injustices of the Windrush Scandal are explored in the solo play The Windrush Secret (31 Oct). It is told through three characters: a young white far-right racist party leader, a black Caribbean diplomat, and a white Oxfordeducated Home Office government official who is giving speeches on the same day. This piece of political theatre is not to be missed, bringing to life the cruelty of the British immigration system and the cynical way populist politics dehumanise marginalised minorities.

Do you remember the day you picked up your tiny bundle of fluff?
Or when you brought them out of the rescue centre, giving them a second chance, a chance for love at last?
And now, you may be facing the day that no pet owner ever wants to think about; the day when you have to say goodbye.
As well as sadness, pet owners often experience confusion, anger and guilt. This is to be expected. Sick or elderly pets have good days and bad days. Days when they won’t eat, and days when they eat everything you put in front of them.
Here are a couple of positive comments from clients, which may help others facing this decision.

How is my allotment like a farm? How is my allotment like a farm?
Irecently went on a visit to Wild Ken Hill near Kings Lynn, which is a farm where 1500 acres are being rewilded and managed for diversity, and 2500 are farmed regeneratively. You may also know it from Springwatch and Winterwatch, for which it has been used as a location several times in the last few years.
I loved what I learnt about beavers there. They are driven mad by the sound of dripping water and must stop it! What a stressful life but what engineers! Like all official beavers, they were kept in an enclosure because, if let loose, they might build their miracles on housing estates and in other locations where it would be less appreciated than on farmland without water. By contrast, a cousin in Germany was telling me about the beaver that comes to visit her garden in central Hannover, where nobody is worried about it causing any damage.
As an allotment gardener I got most excited about what I learnt about regenerative agriculture. The field margins were enormous in order to attract a diversity of birds, bees and creepy crawlies. The fields were not ploughed and had rounded corners to avoid unnecessary compaction of soil.
Arable crops seemed to have been densely broadcast rather than sown in individual rows and stood at different heights in the same field. Some weeds were showing through the crops but because of the rewilding and diversity efforts, nature provided solutions without the need for herbicides and pesticides. We were told that they are farming the soil rather than crops by investing in composting and plants that provide fertility.
Most of my allotment neighbours make compost. Quite a few shake their heads when they see the borders of grasses, weeds and flowers surrounding my plot but I know that the pests will descend the minute I remove them. They think no dig gardening and weeds are characteristics of lazy gardeners but I know that my plot provides habitats for predators like wasps and mice, to deal with destroyers of crops like slugs and snails. And who knows, one day I might even attract beavers, which would certainly deal with the absence of mains water!

Tuesdays, 5.30-6pm you’ll find us shifting out of our comfort zones with improv games, ridiculousness, laughter and connection to our inner children, shaking off the day.
Tuesdays, from 6-7pm we share a slower paced hatha yoga practice, for beginners to pros. This is about how we feel, rather than how we look. Mobility, flexibility and strength (of mind and body) come with time. Moving to savasana, we meditate in the present moment before floating home. Untangled.
Wednesday evenings, 7.30-9pm
We invite you to journey inside your experience, with Yin yoga, to increase emotional and physical flexibility, resilience and health. Yin is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Unlike other styles of physical yoga practice, that focus on stretching and toning muscles, the Yin focus is on connective tissues: ligaments, tendons and fascia. Bringing gentle ‘stress’ to areas to stimulate and rejuvenate, Yin improves circulation and joint health, and is also believed to release trauma stored in the fascia. A mainly floor based practice - but don’t be fooled - Yin can be mentally and emotionally challenging. We practise comfort with discomfort. Yintrospection.

Naming guardians for your minor children in your will is an important step to ensure the well-being and care of your children in the event of your death. Here are several reasons why it is crucial to name guardians in your will:
Protecting your children’s best interests: By naming guardians in your will, you have the opportunity to carefully consider and select individuals whom you trust to raise your children with love, care, and values that align with your own. You can choose someone who shares your parenting philosophy, religious beliefs, or educational values. This ensures that your children will be cared for by someone you deem suitable and who will prioritize their well-being.
Avoiding family disputes: Naming guardians in your will can help prevent potential conflicts or disputes among family members or other interested parties about who should have custody of your children. It provides clear and legally binding instructions that can help avoid disagreements and potential legal battles.
Are you interested in having an indoor heated swimming pool exclusively for yourself, family and friends?
If so please ring Will Mack (01508) 538206
3, 6 or 12 monthly bookings for weekly slots available, “also one offs” info@surlinghamtimeshrepool.co.uk
Open seven days a week 6.30am-10.00pm
We are 6 miles SE of Norwich between Surlingham and Rockland St. Mary
Ensuring a smooth transition: In the event of your death, naming guardians in your will helps provide a smooth transition for your children. It offers stability and a sense of continuity during a challenging and emotional time. It minimizes the disruption and uncertainty your children may experience by specifying who will assume responsibility for their care.
Legal recognition: Naming guardians in your will carries legal weight and can be crucial in establishing your wishes in court. While the court ultimately has the final say in determining custody, your expressed preference in your will is given significant weight, and it demonstrates your thoughtful consideration and intention regarding your children’s guardianship.
Peace of mind: By naming guardians in your will, you have the reassurance that your children will be cared for by individuals you trust and have chosen. This can bring peace of mind, knowing that you have taken proactive steps to protect your children’s future and wellbeing.
It’s important to regularly review and update your will, including the guardianship provisions, to reflect any changes in your circumstances or preferences.

I don’t think I realised how many Folk and acoustic events I had been to over the Summer until I read my notebooks. Despite a choice of locations around Norwich for the Summer Sessions I was drawn to St Gregory’s Green. Fine folk sets ensued in July in the form of deft and dextrous duo Finn Collinson and Archie Churchill-Moss, uent pipe and ddle player Malin Lewis and a powerfully delivered take on traditional songs and tunes from Nick Hart and Tom Moore. I also caught the marvellous story telling based song set of Painted Sky there in early August. All of these events were free and superbly organised by Norwich Bid and Norfolk community arts. By chance I made a last minute visit to the Cambridge Folk festival for a day as a friend was unable to. Among many highlights from my rst time back there since the 90s the most memorable was Peggy Seeger and family. Joined by her sons Neil and Calum Maccoll and daughter in law Kate St John her look back upon her long life, memories and stories and performance of key songs, notably ‘The rst time ever I saw your face’ totally captivated the audience while ‘How I long for peace’ was one of the most moving and heart-warming moments of the Summer. This years Folk East may well have been the nal year at Glemham Hall which has been their home for the last decade. If so it was a ne send o . There were many great sets notably from artists that I felt proud to have worked with including George Boomsma, Alden and Patterson, The Finn Collinson band, The Norfolk Broads and Nick Hart and Tom Moore. Other notable highlights included a truly wonderful piece entitled Bird tunes by Miranda Rutter in which she recorded bird songs, echoed them on violin and co composed a piece with them crediting the likes of Blackbirds, Chi Cha , and the Wud Wud bird as co composers, and Freedom to Roam- The Rhythms of Migration re ecting themes of migration, climate change and con ict performed by musicians from Classical, world and folk music backgrounds on
Tabla’s, utes, ddle, harmoniums and harps ably accompanied by Ballet folk interpreting them through dance. While all 12 years have been memorable this would be in my Top 5. We shall have to wait and see where they re-locate to next year. My extensive 4,500 word review is now online at- https://www.fatea-records. co.uk/magazine/live/FolkEast24.php/ should you wish to read it. On a slightly smaller scale early September saw the inaugural year of the Bungay Folk Festival. Held around the town, free by day, and ticketed concerts by night it proved to be a huge success. Many venues, shops and churches were involved as the town really came to life for the weekend. I made it to the Saturday with notable highlights being the Irish tunes of Flann, the Bluegrass inspired Clark and Zuppardi, Prog meets folk from Tin Giants, Medieval music from Pearl in the Egg, the poetry and storytelling enhanced folk of Wendsum, and the o beat performance art and soundscapes of pianist Will Ferguson that somehow combined the feel of early Pink Floyd, backing Tom Waits in a Scottish folk club. I ventured to south Norfolk to see the magni cent and energetic French Canadian band Le Vent Du Nord playing their foot stomping, ddle driven Quebecois songs and tunes propelling the sold out audience to their feet at the corn hall in Diss, and just across the border again to Beccles for a more laid back, gentle storytelling set of songs from Australian and New Zealand duo We Mavericks on their rst tour of the UK. Meanwhile in Norwich The Shackleton trio launched their new album at the Octagon chapel ahead of their 10th anniversary. The album sees them revisiting and re-working earlier story telling songs including old favourites in the canine themed form of ‘Black Sluice’ with its perils of the Lincolnshire roads and swiftly and deftly played tune ‘The Dog that would not be washed’ alongside new similarly themed song ‘200 days’ about a dog nding its way home after an epic journey. Great songs, Top tunes and
superb musicians they received a standing ovation at the end of the night. Phew!! Its been quite a Summer. Here’s to Autumn.
