Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens

Just a stone’s throw from Great Yarmouth, Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens is the perfect day out for families, with so much to see from endangered tigers and leopards to red pandas, noisy gibbons, and many more exciting animals. The park is open all year from 10am (except Christmas Day).

A unique network of raised walkways allows visitors to get up close and personal with many of the animals. You can follow the bridges across the lake or climb the Jubilee Tree Walk to get magnificent views of the park. There is also the Tiger Tree Walk, which takes you directly over the enclosure and the Tiger Veranda, a new feature at the park where visitors can stand and view the fascinating behaviours of the tigers.

You can also visit the Swamp House to see the crocodiles and alligators – dare you cross the ‘wobbly bridge’?

In addition to the variety of incredible animals to

see at Thrigby Hall, there are also plenty of other activities to keep little ones entertained. A large play area is a hit with young visitors. It includes climbing frames and a large slide, perfect for children who still have energy to burn after a good walk watching the animals. There is also a separate tree ropes play area and a maze on the front lawn, alongside a play area and slide that is suitable for younger children.

The Cockatoo Café is open all day serving a range of hot food and drinks and, after a day of exploring, you can pick up some mementos to remember your day out at the gift shop.

The park is wheelchair and pushchair friendly. There are also toilet facilities and free parking.

Angel Yard, a cohousing community in the heart of Norwich

In March a dedicated group of people succeeded in getting planning permission from Norwich City Council for what we believe is probably the first cohousing scheme in Norfolk. It has been a very long journey which started in 2008 but became more real in 2015 when the site on Oak Street was bought by the Sussex Street Community Interest Company.

Cohousing is an intentional community run by its residents; each household has a separately owned unit but there are facilities for everyone to use such as a ‘common house’ with a kitchen for communal meals and activities, extra

A view of the garden which will be at the heart of the site; showing the rear of the Sussex Street flats, (centre) and the rear of the Chatham Street houses on the right

bedrooms for guests and a laundry. The development will be built to the highest environmental standards, with no private car ownership and with sustainability at its heart.

The development of 34 units, comprises six 3 bedroom houses facing Chatham Street and twenty eight flats, with one, two and three bedrooms spread over four floors facing Oak Street and Sussex Street. The development has three frontages –Oak Street, Sussex Street and Chatham Street with a garden for residents in the middle. It is a bold modern design and a socially cohesive idea.

Looking down Oak Street into the City, the junction of Sussex Street, on the left, with Oak Street. The corner is designed to echo shop fronts that used to be in the vicinity

We are hoping for a start on site by January 2025 with completion in approx. 18-24 months. There is a lot of interest in this more friendly way of living and over half the units have already been reserved.

We would welcome others who might like to join us. There is lots of information on the Angel Yard website https://www.angelyard.org.uk/, there are floor plans, drawings and lots more information about the cohousing concept. Look at The Homes and the Joining and Buying tabs on the website. On the Joining & Buying page click on the Yes! I’d like to register my interest button; leave your details and we will get back to you.

Strong Roots, The Avenues, was founded in 2006 on four adjoining allotments at Bluebell Allotments (northside) in Norwich. It is a unique and innovative therapeutic project which offers psychological therapy in a garden setting. Lucy Scurfield, the Co-ordinator, is trained in integrative therapy and counselling. She has extensive experience of working with a wide range of people in this space. Strong Roots is open throughout the year. The facilities include a summer house with a wood burning stove for use in winter, a second shelter and a composting toilet.

Strong Roots is intended for anyone who is interested in their personal development, whatever that might mean for the individual, and who wishes to be outside. This might include those who experience anxiety, mental health issues or isolation. Gardening is not the focus but it may be a helpful activity for people who come to sessions. The aim is to create a safe environment in which people feel able to be however they are. The site is a calm, no pressure setting large enough for participants to feel they are in a private space away from neighbouring allotment holders. There is no sign indicating the location or the nature of the project.

Individuals may refer themselves or be referred by one of several local statutory or nonstatutory agencies. The first point of contact is by phone or email to arrange a meeting in which the person can decide whether Strong Roots might meet their needs. Regular evaluation by those who attend shows a positive change to their mental well-being.

Examples of individuals’ feedback:

‘I find small rooms claustrophobic but I feel more open in an outside space. I find it easier to talk because it is peaceful but not completely silent.’

‘I like coming to Strong Roots because it is quiet, therapeutic and makes me feel good about myself. I also like watching the butterflies… I like the winter when we have a nice warm bonfire. I feel good about myself when I talk about different issues.’

Strong Roots is a registered charity reliant on payments and donations to help cover services and running costs. Our charges are flexible and are decided on an individual basis. We only ask that our clients contribute as generously as is possible for them. If you feel Strong Roots may be something for you please do get in touch by telephone: 07746364668 or email: info@strongroots.org.uk. For further details see the website: www.strongroots.org.uk.

Can you help Ruby and her friends this summer?

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is caring for a month-old semi-feral foal found alone next to her mother, who had tragically passed away. The tiny filly has been named Ruby,as we are celebrating our 40th anniversary this year.

support of our #RedwingsAngels. None of the work we do here at Redwings is possible without donations, which we never take for granted, and, if you are able to donate towards the care of Ruby and the other horses, ponies, donkeys and mules at our sanctuary, we’d be so grateful.

Ruby arrived at the Sanctuary’s Horse Hospital in Norfolk in June and has been receiving around-theclock care from our amazing in-house vet and farm teams. She was recently introduced to a potential foster mum, Cilla, over the weekend.

Taking on a foal in these tough financial times is a big commitment and we’re so grateful that we’ve been able to do that thanks to the kind and generous

Staff from across all Redwings’ departments are giving their time by volunteering to do Ruby’s 3am feeds, which she’ll need for at least the next three weeks, to support their veterinary colleagues and ease the burden on charity resources.

To contribute towards the care of little Ruby and her friends, donations can be made here: www.redwings. org.uk/supportus/donate

Is it summer yet?

Ispent a couple of happy hours weeding my vegetables in the rain this week. Fingernails black, T-shirt soaked through, footwear containing a small lake, trousers covered in mud, and what popped into my head were the voices of a large number of people complaining about the lack of summer this year. If you were to ask my vegetables about temperatures and rainfall, they’d say that they had been shivering for a long time, but now, despite some nights continuing below 10 degrees, and despite the huge volume of rain we’ve had, they are enjoying one of the best summers ever.

I have had a very large harvest of broad beans and onions. In fact, their growth was so vigorous that for a while I couldn’t find the fennel and the carrots that I’d sown in between. To my surprise even they had progressed well. I’ve more peas in the freezer than ever before, even though the mice had munched quite a few of the plants. My turnips, which I grew to add a bit of raw crunch to meals, have grown so big that even I couldn’t eat enough salad to use them all up. Turns out they can be a substitute for potatoes and retain their slightly peppery taste even when boiled, mashed, fried, pickled or baked. The sweet corn is a good size, beetroot is getting there, brassicas are better than ever, potatoes are produced in unbelievable numbers per plant and tayberries, loganberries, blueberries, currants and strawberries are thriving on neglect.

So, believe it or not, summer is happening right now. Enjoy!

A Case of Missed Opportunities

Consider the case of Sarah and John, a married couple in their late 60s. They had lived a comfortable life, raising their children, and saving for their retirement. However, they had not taken the time to create powers of attorney. Unfortunately, a sudden and severe car accident left John incapacitated, unable to make decisions or communicate.

In the absence of a Property & Financial Power of Attorney, Sarah was unable to access their joint bank accounts to pay their mortgage, bills, and other expenses. She had to navigate a cumbersome legal process to gain access to their assets, which took months. During this time, the couple’s nancial stability was in jeopardy.

Additionally, without a Health & Welfare Power of Attorney, Sarah struggled to have the nal say on medical decisions for John.

Family disputes erupted over what course of action to take, further complicating the situation.

In the end, John’s health deteriorated, and he passed away before the family could come to a consensus on his care. The absence of a Health & Welfare (Medical) Power of Attorney led to emotional distress, family con ict, and a sense of powerlessness during a di cult time.

Conclusion

The case of Sarah and John underscores the crucial importance of powers of attorney in every adult’s life. These documents provide a sense of security and control, ensuring that your wishes are respected and that your loved ones are spared unnecessary stress and uncertainty during times of crisis. It is never too early to create powers of attorney, as accidents and illnesses can strike unexpectedly. Take the time to consult with a quali ed professional to draft these essential documents and safeguard your nancial and healthcare decisions. Don’t let missed opportunities and complications become the legacy of your family’s experience.

FREE FESTIVALS STILL EXIST- In an era of the vastly overpriced Glastonbury ‘experience’ free festivals do still exist and I made it to 3 recently. Celebrating its 50th anniversary Strawberry Fair in Cambridge offered a range of artists across 8 stages. Personal favourites included singing pianist Sean O’Hanrahan backed by a bassist and drummer with hints of The Waterboys and Hothouse Flowers and the look of Clifford T Ward, the driving Irish inspired folk pop with added trumpets of Thy Last Drop, and local legends Colonel Hathi’s upbeat, brass laden Ska set played to a packed out and in the mood beer tent. Despite the awful weather The First Light festival in Lowestoft was heaving with people with the amazing Karma Sheen mixing psychedelic rock with Indian Raga’s like a rockier early Pink Floyd jamming with Ravi Shankar, and a talk by the legendary Joe Boyd about the origins of world music and his forthcoming book ‘And the roots of rhythm remain’. Finally the annual Dereham Blues festival staged around the town offered a range of variations upon the blues. My highlights were the early blues of Moonshine Coyote including Cigar box guitars they made themselves, Ministry of Mojo’s Chicago and 60s blues with a singer who had a hint of early Van Morrison, and the jump jive covers and original storytelling songs of Stormy T and the Bluesman’s lane. 30 acts in 8 venues on the day that I went to, and all free. You don’t have to pay a fortune to go to a festival. I HAD A MEDIAEVAL WEEKEND - Seeing one mediaeval inspired act in a weekend is unusual, but to see 2 is unique. Legendary mediaeval and prog inspired band Gryphon played at St Andrew’s church as part of the Eaton concert series. Harking back to the 1970s some of their influences date back to the 16th century, notably the Norfolk connected jolly opening tune ‘Kemps Jig’. What makes Gryphon unique is the combination of rock instruments with crumhorns and bassoons with the former instrument being central on the pun intended jaunty ‘Crum Dancing’ and the latter the centre of an odd tale on the ‘Brief History of a Bassoon’ of keyboardist and bassoon man Brian Gulland being descended from a tree that bassoons are made from. This brings us to another aspect of

Gryphon, their sense of humour notably on the very English ‘Anyone for Dennis’. Their prog side showed through on extracts from their album ‘Red Queen’ while ‘4th Sahara’ had hints of the Canterbury scene. They encored with a mediaeval piece that they played live on the 70s kids tv show ‘Magpie’. Sadly, I can’t imagine that happening now. A very entertaining and talented band. www.eatonconcertseries.co.uk The following day Pearl in the Egg played at St Peter Mancroft as part of the free Mancroft music series of concerts at 1 pm every Saturday. In authentic mediaeval outfits and playing harps, recorders, bells, crumhorn, rebek and psaltery their atmospheric tunes drawn from English, French, and Italian origins, among others were enhanced by the acoustics of this grand old building. This was noticeable on the 14th century haunting harp and bell led ‘Douce Dame’, early French Provencal tune ‘Des Oge Mais’, and the 13th century ‘Quand Li Rossignal’ with the audience soaking up the beautiful music in quiet reverence. Well worth going to see they are appearing at both the Cambridge and Bungay Folk Festivals.

Finally the Behind the Sun collective launched their debut self titled mini album at band leader Cosmo’s Psychedelic Circus night at the Brickmakers creating a huge and well rehearsed instrumental sonic wall of sound that almost literally blew the doors off of the building, and the socks off of the audience.
