Photo via TwinLens Photography For Eric Missouri, owner of Angelina’s Dutch Corner, the day begins with the tantalizing aroma of sizzling breakfast delights and the promise of family time ahead. “I’ve always liked the breakfast lifestyle, being able to wake up early and have the whole day ahead of me,” he says. “It’s very nice to finish work around three or four o’clock and spend time with my kids, even having enough daylight to take them out.” Missouri’s deep-rooted love for family resonates through the walls of Angelina’s Dutch Corner, a charming New Westminster eatery that has been serving up Dutch culinary delights for two decades now.

“Restaurants are my passion. It’s where my heart truly lies.” Missouri may not be Dutch by nationality, but he considers himself “honorary Dutch” due to his extensive experience with Dutch cuisine and culture. When he assumed ownership of the restaurant, he committed to preserving the family-friendly Duth ambiance of the restaurant located on the picturesque New Westminster Quay waterfront. Not only does this year mark Missouri’s 10-year anniversary of ownership, Angelina’s Dutch Corner is also commemorating 20 years of serving the New Westminster community.

“We’re planning a staff party in the restaurant, celebrating these 10 years with my dedicated team and my own family. It will be an evening where staff and family come together, a true celebration of our collective journey,” he says.

The family friendly eatery is the perfect place for groups to gather and enjoy each other’s company in the warm and inviting space. As a father or five, Missouri has a special soft spot for seeing families come together in his restaurant. “I like to be about families. It makes me happy to see families enjoying their time together, creating cherished memories. They’re always welcome here,” Missouri says. Angelina’s Dutch Corner is not just a place for great food; it’s a haven for families. Adding to the joy, Missouri shares the recent addition to his own family. “Having new twins brought a lot of joy to our family and the restaurant. They’re now 10 months old and spreading happiness wherever they go,” he says. Before taking over the restaurant in 2013, Missouri’s career journey ventured through diverse fields. Trained as a paralegal, he spent a brief time in international import-export, but it was the world of restaurants that ultimately captured his heart. “I’ve been doing the restaurant for almost 30 years,” he says.

British Columbia Institute of Technology New BCIT president has a modern vision for the future

R

ecently joining the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) as president in July of 2023, to say Dr. Jeff Zabudsky had to fast-track his preparation before school started in September is an understatement.

I would like us to be known globally for our influence in advanced technology around themes of the green economy. Our students are keen on this stuff. They are the future. That is why they are here.”

However, Zabudsky is a well-respected, seasoned professional with an impressive thirty years of high-level experience in the post-secondary and polytechnic sectors across Canada and the Middle East. A logical candidate for the role, he joined BCIT at a pivotal time with extensive transformations underway at the Burnaby Campus and across B.C.’s workforce.

Post-secondary education plays a crucial role in the future of B.C.’s workforce, and Zabudsky understands its significance to the province’s economic growth.

Still, Zabudsky feels enthused and privileged to take on the challenge. It is estimated there will be over one million job openings available in B.C. in the next ten years, and Zabudsky plans to work closely with both industry and government to provide the necessary skills and training to set students up for success.

“We recently had a hugely successful fundraising campaign that raised $125 million from the private sector,” he explains, funds which support students with scholarships and bursaries, contribute to new buildings and more. “We recently announced a $5.5 million donation from the Washington Foundation, as well,” he says. “This funding will provide BCIT programs to four different high schools throughout the Lower Mainland where young people can get their start in in-demand skilled trades training

When asked about his own leadership style, Zabudsky states: “A leader who presumes they can do it all themselves and have all the answers is probably not the strongest of leaders. Identifying good talent and surrounding yourself with that talent is critical.” He also emphasizes the importance of “assuring you are giving appropriate authority and autonomy to those individuals to make good decisions and use their talents accordingly, to try new things and be innovative. I am a leader who is patient with situations that might fail but am willing to take risks.” Beyond B.C., the whole country looks to BCIT as a visionary in post-secondary education, especially in the industry and advanced technology-focused workforce. “BCIT is a great institution with a powerhouse reputation,” Zabudsky describes. “If I were to think forward five to ten years, I’d like to see BCIT recognized as faithful to its past while leading the way to new, sustainable technology in A.I., in net zero house constructions, and many sustainability themes. “Given the climate changes that are occurring,

and then carry on into an apprenticeship of their choosing, free of charge. We chose schools that have more vulnerable and marginalized students that need support.” With BCIT’s track record presently at 98% of degree grads employed within six months of graduation, we can’t wait to see what Zabudsky’s new leadership will inspire. — 7 —

Burnaby Hospital Foundation An engaged community fuels unprecedented fundraising success

N

eighbours aligned with neighbours, all from various backgrounds, united to bolster the common good.

This depiction of a fully supportive community is precisely the formula that has resulted in Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s most successful fundraising campaign in the organization’s history. The numbers tell a success story that surprised even the Foundation’s strongest supporters: more than $30 million raised over three years by more than 13,000 donations in its Proud History, Bright Future campaign. The campaign supports the transformative redevelopment of Burnaby Hospital from a community hospital to a modern campus of care. “We are incredibly proud of our community and their willingness to recognize the importance of advancing healthcare,” says Burnaby Hospital Foundation Board Chair Steven McKoen. “Their donations show that our community really stands behind what we do.”

While Phase One is nearing completion, another critical stretch of fundraising approaches. Phase Two will require a significant investment from the community, which will help bring additional medical services to the hospital. Housed in a 12-storey acute care tower are upgrades to the Intensive Care Unit and expansion of the hospital’s Medical Imaging capabilities, both areas demanding an extensive list of necessary equipment. This phase also includes new in-patient oncology and cardiac telemetry units, 160 private rooms, and will be home to the first cancer centre in the city. “We have already seen an outpouring of support from the community following the announcement of this next phase,” says Kristy James, Burnaby Hospital Foundation President & CEO. “We’re excited to share exciting news about a few large gifts this fall, with hopes that this will inspire the community to follow suit.”

Adding to the effort, the Chinese Ambassador Society, consisting of passionate and motivated community members, has helped raise $4.5 million to date. Donations truly came from a diverse population, with contributions from individuals, business leaders, community groups and local companies, all showcasing the very best in the community. This unprecedented collective effort, during a pandemic, no less, is cause for celebration. “One of the things that I think is a silver lining to the general cloud of COVID is that it really demonstrates to folks in Canada the necessity of supporting our hospitals because hospitals are where we turn to in calamities,” McKoen says.

Jagmeet Singh, MP for Burnaby South

W

ithout a doubt, it’s a fitting aphorism for Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, whose story as a young man identifies with Canadians today, and in particular, residents in Singh’s Burnaby South riding, especially young families. He understands plenty of the same struggles from their perspective. He goes beyond just seeing their outlook—he can fully comprehend their position because he’s experienced how they’re feeling. Singh was first elected to the Burnaby South riding in 2019 during a byelection, after he was elected party leader, but his early years— weren’t easy. The son of Indian immigrants from Punjab, Singh grew up in Ontario with his sister and brother, and at twenty-years-old, worked three jobs while going to Western University, (and later, graduated law school, ultimately, practicing as a criminal defence lawyer).

can be a huge relief; almost 11 million people received it.” Additionally, Singh and the NDP Caucus delivered the greatest expansion of universal health care in generations, with the creation of a new dental care program in December 2022, and concrete steps towards national pharmacare. “To be able to serve has been one of the greatest joys and pride of my life. My mom taught us that we’re all connected, and we’re truly thriving when we take care of the people around us and lift them up.” As a local champion, Singh participates in and hosts community events, and works tirelessly for Burnaby residents assisting with federal government related issues, especially immigration work, something he helps dozens of constituents with each week.

He stepped up to provide for his family, due to his father’s alcohol addiction and inability to work, leaving Singh no choice but to take in his 15-year-old brother, Gurratan. “I know what it’s like to struggle to put food on the table,” recalls Singh. “I had to keep a roof over our head, and remember how difficult it was to take care of us both on those salaries.” While he and his mother floundered financially, they couldn’t afford care for his father. “I really believe in universal public health care because the publicly-funded rehab centre saved his life.” To add to their anxiety, Singh vividly remembers creditors on their heels. “I know that fear of someone threatening to take our home away—and did, for a time. All those struggles inform why I care about: affordable housing, public health care, and people earning enough to support themselves and their family.” One of his proudest achievements has been delivering for his Burnaby neighbours and people across the country, relief from inflation with a grocery and GST rebate, in July 2023. “For families that are just getting by, a little break

Nearly a decade ago, Zaman Noori made the life-changing decision to move his family from Afghanistan to Canada, a place where they could not only seek safety, but also the opportunity to thrive and return their gratitude to the community.

And they are also helping sponsor and fundraise for the Royal Lepage Shelter foundation by hiking the mountains of Ecuador for five days this November. Money raised will support women and children in the Afghan community who are seeking safety and hope for a life free from abuse.

And the outlet for that since 2014 has been their family-run business, Dinakis Mediterranean Grill in Port Coquitlam.

“We firmly believe that giving back to the community eventually comes back to you,” Samira explains, emphasizing the sense of satisfaction they derive from making a positive impact.

“We weren’t in the restaurant business in Afghanistan, but we wanted to run a small business where we could all be together as a family,” explains Samira Noori, manager and bartender at Dinakis Mediterranean Grill. “It’s an experience we hold close to our hearts,” she adds. “While sibling life is not always fun, we feel fortunate to be able to spend time working together.

Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation Mental health care lodges rally for new accessible van to elevate resident experience

C

ottonwood, Connolly, and Cypress Lodges have launched a fundraising campaign with the goal of $260,000 to purchase a 2022 RAM Wheelchair accessible van. The new vehicle would enhance the quality of life for 64 residents living with persistent mental illnesses.

The outdated vehicle’s issues don’t stop at limited seating. Its recurring need for repairs has led to inconsistent availability. The residents, particularly seniors at Connolly Lodge, find it arduous and, at times, unsafe to board or alight from the current vehicle.

“The new vehicle will provide opportunity for more residents to participate in outings on a more consistent basis. Not only will increased seating capacity allow for more passengers on each outing, the accessibility will provide opportunity for residents with limited mobility,” Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation’s Executive Director Kristina Chung says.

The staff at the lodges have consistently observed the therapeutic impact of community outings on residents. For many, these trips offer a break from routine, a touch of normalcy, and a reminder of the world outside.

“Community integration is an important aspect of the residents’ recovery journey. Often, when residents go out into the community, even for a simple cup of coffee, they report feelings of enjoyment, satisfaction and peace. There are endless benefits of community integration outings – fostering social inclusion, reducing psychological stress and increasing sense of belonging.”

“By creating positive and meaningful memories for residents, the sense of integration and belonging in the community will affect other aspects of their lives. Feelings of accomplishment and pride for the progress made in recovery and rehabilitation will provide improved self-esteem and confidence, which are key factors when living with mental illness,” Chung says.

Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation highlights the transformative impact of community outings and seeks community support to reach fundraising goal.

The current vehicle serving these lodges, part of the Riverview Redevelopment Project through Fraser Health, is not only outdated but lacks crucial features. It poses safety concerns and its limited seating capacity severely curtails the number of residents who can engage in communal activities. Moreover, its lack of wheelchair accessibility excludes those with mobility challenges, robbing them of opportunities for recreation and community involvement. “Residents require access to community health care providers, recreation centres and other community resources, and with the limited capacity of the current vehicle, the amount of residents who can access the community regularly is impacted,” Chung says. The new van promises a considerable upgrade. It will be equipped to seat 10 passengers and accommodate two wheelchairs. Beyond just a transport upgrade, the van symbolizes inclusivity and a commitment to holistic care. “The anticipation of consistent outings will provide residents with a sense of hope and something to look forward to,” Chung says.

The new van is a step toward ensuring that every resident, irrespective of their physical abilities, feels valued, included, and heard. The lodges call upon the community for support to meet their fundraising goal. This law firm provides expert assistance to simplify probate and property sales

o, here you are. You’ve recently lost a loved one, family member, friend, or even a business partner, and they’ve named you to be the executor of their estate. You’ve heard it can be a complicated and long draw-out task, one full of responsibility and even liability - both personal and financial. What do you do? Burnaby lawyer Marie-Louise Fast, who founded her company Fast & Company in 1988, advises that first of all, don’t get overwhelmed.

You don’t have to go through this alone and without the professional help and experience of a lawyer, and even a real estate professional if the estate includes property. Fast & Company’s expertise and focus is in probate administration, as well as real estate and business law, so the firm is adept at leading you through the process and fulfilling your role as the estate’s executor. “It’s (being an executor) is much more complex and complicated than most people think,” Fast says. “There is rarely such a thing as a simple estate. And once you get into the ‘weeds’ you realize there’s a lot of potential risks, exposure and liability for executors if you don’t get legal advice, and get it right.”

“They work as a team to market the estate’s property in a seamless, one-stop shopping experience,” Fast explains. “The client benefits from legal advice right from the start of their transaction to the very end when a property is sold, and the client saves all the usual legal closing costs. It’s a ‘winwin’ scenario.” Relex not only offers added confidence the executor is protected, but can also be used for those just seeking to undertake a real estate transaction not associated with an estate. “Anybody who wants to buy or sell property can use the program,” Fast says.” In addition, executors also need to possess patience for the estate/probate process to unfold. “I tell my clients it will take a minimum of six to nine months. And it often takes a lot longer than that,” Fast says, adding it is vital for an executor to make beneficiaries aware of that timeline. “They (beneficiaries) are most always quite anxious, so when the executor sets out the realities of

For the bulk of her entire adult life, Patti Goss has done just that. Goss has worked in real estate since 1990, helping countless clients find their dream homes across New Westminster, Burnaby and the Tri-Cities.
