Sand Vs. Replacing Divot

My name is Matthew Head, and I am extremely excited and honored to be joining the Golf Professional Staff here at Idle Hour Country Club. My wife, Megan, and I are native Texans and proud alumni of The University of Texas. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Religious Studies, and she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, a master’s degree in Forensic Science from Oklahoma State University, and is currently a first-year veterinarian student at Lincoln Memorial University. When I am not at work, my wife and I enjoy taking our dogs, Leo and Riley, exploring. We have also started to pick up pickleball!
I began my golf career in 2015 as a member service team member at Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Austin Texas. Since then, my professional journey has taken me to several clubs in Austin (Austin Country Club, Austin Golf Club, and Omni Barton Creek Resort) ranging from private to resort facilities. I am so glad to be coming back to my passion of the private sector, where I can come to know and serve each of you.

That is the question. Actually, the better question is, to replace or not to replace the divot you created. Let’s take a deep (no pun intended) dive into this topic.
Divots are part of the game of golf. In fact, many would say that in order to hit a good shot, a divot is a must. It’s what is done after the divot that matters most. At Idle Hour, our golf carts are equipped with sand bottles filled with green sand for the golfer’s convenience to use if NEEDED. Sand is only needed if and only if the divot explodes or has no soil left on it. Cool season grasses (bent, rye, blue) will grow back if the divot is properly replaced immediately. Sand MUST be used if the divot isn’t replaceable or less than the full divot remains in which case, the sand can be used as a supplement.

Remember, the condition of a golf course isn’t solely dependent on the superintendent and his staff. It is the player’s responsibility to leave the golf course in better shape after playing by fixing divots, repairing ball marks and limiting practice swings from the teeing ground.
Idle Hour is a beautiful golf course. Lets all take pride and do our part to make it better.
