Without Prejudice I recently attended a meeting of the Torksey Action Group which was held at the Torksey Tea Rooms. I was there as I believed the subject of speeding vehicles and motor bikes over the bridge at Torksey Lock posed a grave danger to residents of the Elms, be they motorist or pedestrians trying to cross the road.

e are a small local classic car club that is looking for some space where we can store and work on 3–4 vehicles. With limited club funds we aren’t able to stretch to commercial premises so thought that a local landowner may have an old barn or workshop that could be rented. We are happy to make repairs to the premises to make good and our only requirement is electricity.

Speeding in Torksey, what's your view?

over what is literally a blind summit, it is beyond belief no one seems to appreciate the accident which undoubtedly is waiting to happen.

I volunteered to undertake training with a speed monitor as I was under the impression this would be actioned at the Torksey Lock bridge.

I am now dismayed to find the action is to be taken in Torksey Village area. This is already protected by a 30mph speed limit and the nature of the curves in the road naturally has the effect of slowing the traffic down, therefore to take the readings in this area would be a complete waste of time and do nothing to alleviate the real problem of Torksey Lock bridge.

I would really like someone in authority to tell me a person or persons has to die or be injured before common sense prevails, because that is what seems to be the case.

I suggest that T.A.G. and the Parish Council stop accepting half measures in this matter and presses the powers that be for some sensible and appropriate action on this matter before someone gets killed.

When I attended the meeting at Torksey Lock Tea Rooms it was with the intention of getting involved in some way with T.A.G. and hopefully to work towards solving some of the problems, mainly the Torksey Lock speeding. What ought to be happening is that someone from T.A.G./ Parish Council should be contacting people at the Highways Agency, singling out one person in authority and saying if the Torksey Lock speed limit is OK as it is and someone gets maimed or worse, the publicity lands on their desk. It was clear from the conversation that the authorities are satisfied with the situation at Torksey Lock and the speed limit at this point would stay as it is. This may or may not work but the ball would have been placed clearly back in their court.

While I support and commend T.A.G. and the Parish Council for their dedication to the community, please raise some real issues , after all, squabbling over the church and discussions about the old telephone box and the setting up of a croquette and boules pitch is not going to kill someone, the Torksey Lock Bridge may well do.

Response from Torksey Action Group Dear Geoff Thank you for your letter dated 11 April 2011, the contents of which I have noted.

As I understand it, the issues you have raised are-: a) Purpose of the activity; b) Speeding in the village area; c) Speeding on the road outside of the Elms and d) Other activities of T.A.G. a) Firstly, may I apologise for any misunderstanding that may have occurred regarding the location of carrying out the speed check. Given there had already been a monitoring exercise in respect of the road outside the Elms, (see below - c), it was always the intention that this exercise would be based in the village. b) Although your comments regarding speeding in the Main Street of the village may sound logical, this exercise has shown that, in fact, a large percentage of traffic travels well in excess of the 30mph speed limit. c) As for your views in respect of the road from the lock to the village, I am not aware of anyone, at least locally, who would disagree with you. These points, along with others, have been made to the powers-that-be for some time. You will be aware that the Parish Council has made representation over a number of years and T.A.G. has now challenged the local authority about this issue – there having been a 24 hour, 7 days a week for two weeks monitoring of traffic, in both directions, just outside the Elms entrance in June of last year; additionally, T.A.G. arranged a petition regarding this matter and 395 residents of the parish signed a petition, which was sent to the Chief Executive of Lincolnshire County Council. You heard the council’s response, as I read that out at the meeting you attended. We, T.A.G., now need to

follow that up.

It may be worth at this point clarifying T.A.G.’s general position. We are a group of volunteers who wish to see life lived to its best for all in the parish. We have no official standing or recognised authority – just a strong commitment to help all those in the parish. I have said previously, we can do anything, what we can’t do is everything – unless we get more people actively involved, be that on a long-term basis or just for a short time to deal with a particular issue. Consequently, given your views regarding speeding traffic, I invite you to join us to help on this particular issue. d) Regarding your last paragraph, you will remember completing the Parish Questionnaire some months ago. We had 426 respondents, all expressing their views and preferences, all equally committed about their issues, as you are about yours. Our responsibility is to respond and act on as many as we can, in some form of order, recognising two points – i) some of the recommendations contained in the Parish Plan will take many months (years in some instances) to achieve and ii) the majority of the recommendations relate to statutory authority responsibilities, which means we (T.A.G.) can only petition/lobby those bodies responsible. Again, the more parishioners get actively involved, the greater the chance of us achieving the recommendations. Lastly, I note you have copied your letter to Shirley Shaw, who is Parish Clerk to Fenton Parish Council. That parish council has no responsibility for Torksey Parish. If you wish the Parish Council to be aware of your views you need to send your correspondence to Roger Pilgrim, Clerk to Torksey Parish Council, 2 Cedar Close, The Elms, otherwise your letter will not be noted by the council.

News from the Trentside Villages Marton School Updates Woodside Falconry Visit Class 1 and Reception children had a lovely day when they visited Woodside Falconry. They saw – and handled – birds, snakes and lizards! The children particularly liked the lemurs and meerkats. The park rangers praised the children on their excellent behaviour — the only cheeky monkeys were the ones in the trees!

K’Nex Challenge Class 3 took part in the annual K’Nex Challenge. Children paired up and were given the task to make a swing bridge.

They had to design and plan on paper before making the actual model which was then tested! Eventual winners were Ben and Oliver.

Even Mrs Hill held a snake!

It makes the smell of roses sway around And lavender seeds drop to the ground Daisies spin and twirl in joy Chamomile petals run through the air And bluebells sprint in circles.

This event is organised by the Education Business Partnership. Winners from each school go forward to the next round and the eventual Lincolnshire winners will compete against other counties.

Our Community Garden is taking shape!

Planting started at the weekend and everything should be finished by early May in time for the grand opening. The pathways have been laid and still to be added are a pergola, a multi-sensory path, a bog garden and an outdoor classroom! We are all very excited about this and the impact it could have on our local community.

On Friday 18th March, children arrived at school wearing red noses together with a splash of red and were very excitedly bringing cakes to sell! Some children had made cakes at school to sell and we sold 120 red noses! A total of £250 was raised for Comic Relief which we think is fantastic! Thanks for your support!

Brampton A village of porcelain, ploughing and fond memories.

B

rampton is situated 7.7 miles from Gainsborough just off the A156 near Torksey. You may be forgiven for thinking when you drive through it that it is a picturesque small hamlet with very little to write about. You would be right on the first two counts as it is indeed picturesque and in 1891 it was listed as having a population of 94 and I expect little has changed since then. However Brampton has an interesting past and with stories from people who remember Brampton long ago and photos that have been kindly donated we shall tell the story of this interesting hamlet so that you may look upon it in a new light.

Brampton Potteries

W

illiam Billingsley moved from his decorating establishment at Mansfield, some seven miles east of Pinxton, in or shortly after June 1802 and established a small porcelain factory at Brampton. This was sometimes described

as The Torksey Factory, but Brampton Manufactory was the original title and this name occurs in some rare marks or inscriptions. Although Billingsley undoubtedly supplied the knowhow, he needed backers to supply the funds in order to establish the factory. Mr C L Exley in his book The Pinxton China Factory (privately published by Mr & Mrs R Coke-Steel, Sutton-on-the-Hill, 1963) states that Henry Bankes, a partner in the Pinxton concern, broke a covenant by supplying funds to enable Billingsley to start the new Brampton China Works.

Bankes remained a partner with John Coke of Pinxton up to 1st January 1803.

The London Gazette of 9 August 1803 records a 'Commission of Bankruptcy' awarded against Henry Bankes of Lincoln, Maltster, China Manufacturer, & Dealer. However, the Dissolution of Partnership notice, as published in the London Gazette of 5 April 1808, lists the following partners in the firm of Sharpe & Company:

William Sharpe Late of the City of Lincoln but now of Louth, Plumber and Glazier Samuel Walker Of Brampton, Manufactory China Man James Walker Of Fillingham, Farmer Benjamin Booth Of Gainsburgh, Printer William Billingsley Of Brampton Manufactory, China Manufacturer This very mixed partnership was dissolved on 15 July 1807 and the concern was then continued 'in the name of Samuel Walker' until at least 21st November 1807. It is not clear for how long the Brampton Manufactory continued after this; I think it then closed, or lingered on for a very short time until July 1808 when both William Billingsley and Samuel Walker left for Wales. The factory site was visited by William O'Neill in 1895, the report of which is printed in the Report and Papers read at the Meeting of the Architectural

Extracts from this paper are reproduced below: Being anxious to know if there were still any remains of Billingsley's kilns or factory in existence, I made a journey of exploration to Torksey on the 17th of June and two subsequent ones in July.

I discovered no traces of a factory of any kind in Torksey village. On hearing of my search, Mr South (one of the oldest inhabitants) pointed to a house on the top of a distant hill and said, "That is Pottery House and the farm of sixty acres attached to it is called Pottery House Farm." I then remembered that Billingsley in 1805 described himself as 'William Billingsley of Brampton, in the Parish of Torksey'. The factory, then, was not in the village of Torksey as most people thought, but at least three-quarters of a mile from the hamlet of Brampton, which consists of about a dozen houses.

The pottery factory stands on a low hill about four hundred yards to the west of the Gainsborough road. Not far from the west end of the house the grass field is very uneven, with low mounds. Here I think the kilns were placed, and here also, the rubbish may have been thrown and piled in heaps. Doubtless, if these mounds were dug into, they would disclose samples of the various kinds of pottery and porcelain made in the factory.

A few months ago in the course of conversation with a lady in her 88th year, she mentioned tea and coffee services of Torksey china in her possession, which she inherited from her father (Mr Boot) who died in Lincoln in 1835. Miss Boot

informed me that her father, wishing to assist Mr Billingsley who had just started a pottery at Brampton in the Parish of Torksey, employed him to decorate the services which were in a plain white state, but she does not remember having heard her father say whether he had first bought the china from Mr Billingsley or had the services previously in his possession. The china is highly gilt and the paintings, which are in medallions, are well executed. The paintings are all landscapes and are done in reddish brown monochrome, and the name of each view is written on the bottom of the piece. A sugar basin has on its front the 'Brampton Pottery House' painted, and on the back a picture of Torksey village and the old castle.

The majority of the paintings are views in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The mark on the ware is two daggers in blue, meeting at the points. This tea service is of French porcelain, as are pieces to be subsequently mentioned, but Mr O'Neill also referred to other interesting pieces: a jug which is a very fine example of Torksey ware and belongs to Mr Benjamin Wilmot, of Manchester. Mr Wilmot inherited the jug from his grandfather, whose initials B. W. are placed on the front of the vessel. Mr Benjamin Wilmot, in the days of the Brampton pottery, was a farmer and butcher, living at Newtonby-Trent, a village not far from Torksey, and supplied Mr Billingsley with meat.

On one occasion when a debt was contracted by the potter, and the butcher had sent in his bill, the proprietor of the potteries presented him with the jug instead of cash! This jug can be seen in the Usher Art Gallery in Lincoln, where the fine and comprehensive Exley Collection is displayed.

When I read this account, it seemed most unfortunate that William O'Neill had not taken the opportunity of digging into these mounds for the 'samples' he presumed were hidden therein. I therefore resolved that if I was ever in the neighbourhood, I would visit the site to see if by chance the mounds or factory wasters were still undisturbed.

The chance was taken while returning from a holiday in August 1966. The farmhouse, once part of the Brampton Manufactory, was still standing in its solitary position. Many fragments of pottery are to be found in the garden and fields surrounding the farmhouse; these appear to date from the middle of the nineteenth century onwards and are pieces of domestic pottery discarded by the various tenants.

The field mentioned by Mr O'Neill over 70 years ago does not now show the intriguing 'low mounds', but August is not the best month for tracing rubbish dumped over 150 years previously, as the growth of grass is so lush that it covers all but the most pronounced object.

Within half-an-hour my wife and I found evidence to suggest most strongly that porcelain was made as well as decorated at the small Brampton factory.

Apart from these fragments showing that porcelain was made at Brampton, existing pieces show that porcelains made elsewhere were also decorated there.

Memories from Walter Havercroft

W

alter first moved to Brampton in 1945 aged 10. He lived in an end terraced house, now known as Bailey House, for almost 50 years. When he first moved there the 3 adjoined houses had all been recently renovated and extended to add a bathroom, kitchen and living area to the existing buildings.

In the spring of 1945 a chestnut tree was planted to the rear of the property which is still there today with a preservation

Dickinson and finally when the farm was sold, for a Mr Whitton from Kexby for whom he worked his last seven years.

I can remember going to pay the rent on Saturdays to the Hermitage where I would be ushered through dark rooms to see old Mrs Denby. She always wore a lot of jewellery and was very nice to me and gave me a penny each time I went - that seemed a lot of money to give a small child.

When Mr and Mrs Denby died, Mr Charles Dickinson became our landlord.

The Dickinsons were living at the Beeches and then went on to live at the Manor House.

arable and dairy farm when owned by the Dickinson family. Walter has many memories of his time on the farm including Italian and German prisoners of war who worked on the farm. After the war Lincoln prison used to send 20 of its prisoners to work at the farm which Walter thought was very exciting! They were accompanied by a warden and brought meat pies for their dinner which were warmed by the housekeeper.

Walter has now settled in Newton on Trent but looks back on his time in Brampton with warmth and affection.

Memories of my Childhood at Brampton by Sheila Redshaw (nee Cumberlidge)

Walter’s father, William, worked on the Dickinsons' farm with the horses and five years later William joined him. Walter

1935 It was my fifth birthday when we moved from Heapham to Brampton. For my birthday I was given a brand new penny and a jam tart.

I had a brother Winston, a sister Joan and a younger brother Marcus. Unfortunately, Marcus was born brain damaged. War or no war, there was no help or support from anyone in those days. He never went to school, he could walk but not

talk. I was the one who stayed away from school to look after him if Mother and Dad were out, as he had a fascination to poke the fire. In my small way, I tried to teach him to talk and write.

In those days grown-ups seemed to speak in whispers if children were around. They said "Little pots have big ears". Even when Edward Vlll abdicated and war broke out, it was always the same whisper; whisper and I knew something serious was going on.

Dad was a wheelwright and joiner by trade. He worked for Mr Jacob Denby who lived at Hermitage House.

Winston, Joan and I went to Torksey School until one of the teachers started to make Winston and Joan use their right hand, as they were both left-handed.

There were many rows between Dad and the school and Winston developed a stammer, so we all went to Marton School two miles away. As I was small I couldn't walk all the way, so Winston

Trentside Links used to piggy back me until I was stronger. He was a good brother. We went in all weathers, rain, frost, fog and snow sometimes two to three inches deep, we had to go. We wore old socks over our shoes, no waterproof clothing in those days. No wonder we suffered with chilblains and the sniffles. We were happy there; the headmaster and his wife were good to us. If the weather was really bad and we had wet clothes, we were invited into the schoolhouse for a meal.

On Shrove Tuesday, the headmaster gave all the children a huge orange and the afternoon off which was a real treat. My brother left the school at 14 years of age.

Joan passed what is now the 11 plus, but could not afford the High School in Gainsborough. When Joan left Marton School, I was transferred back to Torksey as it was considered too lonely to go on my own. Also, by this time there were different teachers, mine being a Miss Rose Talbot, she and her sister lived at the Priory opposite to the Manor House in Brampton. Miss Violet Talbot taught the boys woodwork, the girls were never taught cookery - maybe it was because there was a war on. We had evacuees from Leeds with their teachers. A curtain

was put down the middle of the big classroom - we were on one side, they were on the other. It did not last long as they were no safer here than in Leeds with all the airfields around. Some of the girls were really well-dressed with their red jumpers and gymslips - I always wished I could have a red jumper and

gymslip but it was not to be.

Food rationing came in buff-coloured ration books for adults, a different colour for children. Adults’ rations per week, per person, were 8oz of sugar, 2oz of butter and lard, 4oz of margarine and one

egg. In addition, dried egg in a waxed carton - one allowed per family each month and 1oz of tea per person per month. We had to queue, especially if we went to Gainsborough to the butcher’s, fish and fruit stalls. Tinned goods, soap, candles, clothing, shoes, materials, towels, bedding and knitting wool were on points and furniture was scarce.

As we had a very big garden we enjoyed lots of fruit and vegetables, Dad grew raspberries, gooseberries, strawberries and rhubarb. Also there were two big Bramley apple trees, if there was a good crop, Dad would clamp them in the garden, for those who don't know what that means, it's what they did with potatoes to keep them over the winter.

Dig a deep trench, line it with straw, put the apples or potatoes in, cover with more straw on the top and then a lot of earth to keep the rain and frost away, that way they would keep until the springtime. Of course it depended how many you used and it wasn't wise to open the clamps up if it was frosty. Nowadays, potatoes are kept in special ventilated sheds.

Dad also grew lots of flowers polyanthuses were one of his favourites, people came from miles around to buy plants and he also had a cold frame and glass house. He also tried to grow mushrooms. We kept honeybees but never had any honey! Dad had permission to catch rabbits on the golf course and he kept ferrets in the pigsty.

Rabbit meat helped out with the meat ration and the skins were sold to the rag and bone man.

Brampton Ploughing Match

W

hen arranging a ploughing match the last thing you want is poor weather. Thankfully, Sunday the 10th of April was a warm, sunny day in Brampton for the annual ploughing match. Seventy-seven participants gathered to compete in the event held by the Lincoln and Newark Ploughing Association. The match has been held every year for the last four years at Brampton and challenges competitors to plough furrows in as many as six different platters (categories), ranging from vintage 1930’s ploughs to modern world-style ploughs. Regardless of what platter one was ploughing in, the criteria remained the same.

Neatness, straightness and consistency in size were but a few among a long list of conditions that judges were marking.

John Plowright, the event organiser, considered the match to be a huge success and ploughed his way to victory in the classic class for trailers from the mid 1960s to the 1980s. He would like to thank the landowner, Peter Johnson, for allowing the Lincoln and Newark Vintage Ploughing Association to run the match every year on his land.

The Brampton match marks the end of the local season but all are welcome to compete next year as all proceeds are donated to the Wish Upon a Star Foundation, in hope of granting wishes to terminally ill children.

Obituaries Stuart James Robert Dunlop Lieutenant Colonel (Ret’d) A service to celebrate the life of Stuart Dunlop was held on Monday 4th April at St Peter’s Church Torksey. He died after a short illness on 25 March 2011.

and returned once again to Catterick, this time as Quartermaster, in 1971.

Following further postings in Cyprus and Germany he retired from the Army in 1988.

Stuart was married twice, his first wife Joanna to whom he was married for 22 years died in 1974. In 1981 he married Renata whom he met in Germany.

Renata had two sons and as a stepfather he was immensely proud of his family. In 1986 Stuart and Renata bought a property on the Elms where they lived following his retirement from the Army.

Sadly Renata died in 1995.

Stuart, a career soldier, was born on 28th August 1927.

He joined the Army at Catterick as a boy apprentice in 1942. Following several postings, which amongst others included the War Office in London and service He was an immensely in Egypt, Germany, Cyprus Stuart James Robert well-organised man, highly and Scotland, he returned to Dunlop respected by his service Catterick in the early 1960s as colleagues, to the extent that Regimental Sergeant Major in a former commanding officer drove a the Royal Signals. round trip of over 300 miles from the South to attend his funeral.

A strong memory of Stuart’s was that whilst serving at the War Office in London he was able to tell a New Delhi Kathleen Stennet operator that the war in Europe was over.

Born 13th May 1927 Bacon Street Stuart was commissioned as a Subaltern Gainsborough in 1968 whilst serving in Singapore

Died 3rd March 2011 Torksey.

Kathleen attended school in Gainsborough after which she worked as secretary to a director of Rose Bros Gainsborough.

She was a member of Gainsborough Operatic Society where she met her future husband F.G.M. Stennett and settled in Torksey.

She took the lead role in ’Belle of New York’ in the 50s.

Her husband died on the 13th May 1973 when she lived alone until her recent death.

Grace Rose (née Cox) Wife of the late Walter, loving mother of Derek and Jean and the late Ivan, dearly loved Nana and Great-Nana.

Funeral service was on Friday 25th March at St Peters Church, Torksey at 2pm followed by interment at Torksey Cemetery.

The Royal British Legion 90th Anniversary

I

n celebrating its 90th anniversary, The Royal British Legion is in fact celebrating a longstanding connection with the people of the United Kingdom.

We estimate that almost one in six people in the UK has a direct Service connection - that is; has either served in the past, or is serving now, or is a family member of someone in Service past or present.

Throughout the Poppy Appeal each November, millions choose to wear the poppy with pride, recognising the sacrifices made by our courageous Armed Forces in the knowledge that the monies donated will go directly to the assistance of the Armed Forces family.

Throughout the year, Legion members in the tiny Wiltshire town of Wootton Bassett pause to salute the repatriation corteges from nearby RAF Lyneham.

Respect and reflection are also a daily occurrence at The Royal British Legion’s

National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, home to the Armed Forces Memorial where the names of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in current conflicts are added annually.

It is not enough to honour the dead; we must also serve the living. I am particularly pleased that the Legion will take a more active role in the rehabilitation of injured, sick and wounded Service personnel in its 90th anniversary year. We have set aside £25 million for two projects which will provide an individually-tailored pathway for those injured in current conflict, leading them either back into Service or towards successful resettlement in a civilian career.

In partnership with the British Army, the Legion will operate four Personnel Recovery Centres providing assistance to injured personnel from all three Services

- the first of these will open in 2011 at Colchester garrison. We will also build, equip and operate The Royal British Legion Battle Back Challenge Centre, a centre of excellence for adaptive sport and adventure training for injured personnel.

The Legion has always stood shoulder to shoulder with our Armed Forces family - and it will continue to do so, for the remainder of its first century and beyond.

I invite you to join the nationwide celebrations of the 90th anniversary of The Royal British Legion by hosting a Poppy Party on the weekend of June 10th to 12th 2011 with family and friends, or with neighbours and work colleagues.

Laughterton LIVES Group is holding a Recruitment Evening on Tuesday 7th June at Newton-onTrent Church starting at 7.00pm. Steve Hyde from LIVES HQ at Horncastle will be explaining what is involved in becoming a First Responder and how we operate.

If you're interested but not sure don't hold back. Come and find out what it's all

about. Being a First Responder does not tie you into a rigid duty rota. It's down to the time you can give.

Our group became operational in 2003 and we provide a rapid response to 999 calls before the ambulance arrives.

This can be crucial in life-threatening situations. We carry a kit including a defibrillator and oxygen, and full training is given in the use of these and basic skills in the treatment of patients.

So, please come along on 7th June to find out what it's all about. You may be able to save a life!

I would like to say a big thank you to all the people who came to help clear up the churchyard at St. Peter's on Easter Monday.

From the youngest, two-year-old Thomas who came with his wheelbarrow and plastic chainsaw, to the oldest. There is still some work to be done but we have cleared a lot and made a big difference.

We also thank Richard and Brian who repaired a leak in the tower roof. Many thanks must also go to Paul Hope who disposed of the rubbish in his lorry. We would have been stuck without you Paul.

Gate Burton Hall Daffodil Walk

T

he daffodil walk in the grounds of Gate Burton Hall on Sunday 10th April made a very pleasant afternoon stroll. We meandered through the sea of yellow daffodils in the welcoming sunshine. At the house we were able to sit out and enjoy some refreshments. A perfect way to enjoy a beautiful spring afternoon.

The proceeds from this event went to St Helen’s Church Gate Burton.

Updates from Newton on Trent School Red Nose Day Whoever thought such good fun could be had at school! The day kicked off with a fantastic assembly by Mrs Fernandes explaining the reasons why we were raising money for Red Nose Day. We all enjoyed making red decorations to help decorate the church for our cafe and cake sale in the afternoon. A very BIG thank you goes to the school council and Mrs Evans for all their hard work in organising a very successful event which, along with contributions from a nonuniform day, raised £151.00.

Big Schools’ Birdwatch The bird watch was cold but exciting. We put some bird food out and quite a lot of birds came such as black birds, robins, house sparrows, blue tit and coal tit. We realised that we all had to be very quiet in order to allow the birds to freely come onto the playground and field so many of us watched them from inside. We were

surprised by how many different varieties of birds we saw in a short amount of time. We recorded the birds we saw and then sent the results to the RSPB.

Royal Wedding On the afternoon of Thursday 28th April the children, staff and parents celebrated the marriage of William and Kate by holding a street party in the playground.

We all wore red, white and blue to get us in the royal mood. The festivities were started by our year 3, 4, 5 & 6 performing some country dancing. Then we all sat down to eat party food! We enjoyed having our faces painted and playing lots of games such as pin the crown on the prince. To draw the party to a close we stood up and sang the National Anthem and gave three cheers for the happy couple. To help us remember how special the Royal Wedding was we also used acrylic paints to decorate porcelain plates.

Reports from the Kettlethorpe and District Women's Institute Women’s lnstitute AGM in March The Lincolnshire Show beckons and several ladies have been busy selecting our entry for display in the competition tent. It would be nice if those of you who see the exhibits let us know what you thought of the entries.

The retiring President Ann Lister asked for voting to select the committee for the next year. It was very warming to see how many had put their names down, (most unusual for a committee these days,) and after the votes were counted by two ladies from Louth, results were announced at the close of the business meeting. The results - in no particular order as they say on the telly - were our new representatives Rita Atkin, Ann Lister, Vivienne Elliot, Jacqui Gee, Sylvia Johnson, Linda Mullally, Janet Willcocks, Sarah Clark, Ann Dolling, and Barbara Gilbert. A further vote for President put Barbara in the chair.

In her report for the year and her three years as President, Ann Lister said it had been very rewarding and was delighted to be presented with photographs of her family. Sylvia Johnson received a bouquet, acknowledging her twenty years of finding speakers for monthly meetings, and their replacements. Linda Mullally, Dorothy Yardley and Janet Willcocks were complimented for top points in the monthly competitions.

Pat Green brought pictures of the Romanian group we support, taken while the children were opening our Christmas presents. This next time we are going to make sure the presents are for those aged between seven and sixteen, which seemed to have been the group rather left out. Members get much pleasure from seeing the results of our interest in this country area, which, as in so many third world countries, seems only to have built up the improvements for main town dwellers.

The needs of other parts of the world were explained by our Louth speaker.

She talked of the probably little-known organisation ACWW or Association of Countrywomen of the World. This encourages and enables the women of poor communities in food production to use their inherited skills, however simple, in growing and marketing (pigs

and harvest for oil for example). Her figures included a group of women from nineteen villages who took part. In the group were youths unable to work because of Aids infection, and otherwise destitute.

The Spring Meeting will be held at Kettlethorpe this year on April 18 and there will be a talk on flower arranging.

April 2011 report This is the beginning of a new year for us, with a newly elected committee. Our current president now is Barbara Gilbert who has occupied the chair on previous occasions. It is worth noting there were so many volunteers for committee we had a vote! In how many voluntary associations these days would that happen?

Trentside Links Anne Close gave a report on the spring meeting at Skegness, and in particular mentioned Richard Stillgoe, who came with four of the residents from the Orpheus Choir Residential Home in the south. Young people with special needs may live there for three years from the age of nineteen. They really enjoyed singing for us as much as we loved their pleasure in doing so. Anne said she missed the usual country market and art displays; however Sue Allan, a local author, was signing copies of her new novel 'Living in Hope'.

Some events to take place in the months ahead were announced. These included 'Bowling for Beginners' on July 5, a seaside special on August 28 at Suttonon-Sea and an RSPB day at Frampton Marsh on June 13. There is also to be a weekend break between 21 and 23 October at Shugborough Hall, with the enticing name of 'Pottering Around'.

Our speaker was Janet Taylor, a needlework and embroidery expert who has been working on the Luttrell Psalter, which to you and I (unless you're an

expert too) is a medieval book of psalms beautifully written and illustrated by pictures of medieval life scattered among its pages. Each paragraph begins with a letter, itself a picture of clever design.

To describe the making is beyond a pillow-stitcher like me but is somehow transferred to the finished article by means of tracing onto tissue paper and felt. Even computers get into the act. Life can be so complicated! What fascinated us all was how absolutely miserable the designed figures in the work looked as they staggered about with dishes for royalty or tilled the land, talk about hard times for the peasantry! Of course though it was a wonderful chance for us to see how the ordinary people lived in the early 14th century.

The competition was for a bookmark and the winner was Dorothy Yardley, second was Nancy price, and Janet Willcock third, so Dorothy might be the person you are looking for to give a hand with that half-finished embroidered tablecloth.

Neighbourhood Policing Team Hello from Gainsborough Rural South Neighbourhood Policing Team, based in Saxilby.

Sonia is back – by popular demand, PCSO Sonia Lewis is now officially a ‘working mum.’ Sonia has returned on a part-time basis but will be visiting as many of her residents and friends as possible in the time allowed.

On another note, garden ornaments are the order of the day. Antique ones on the whole! Victorian chimney pots, stone troughs (and don’t think they can’t move them if they want them), sundials, and in some cases they have taken unique metal conical structures with globes on top!

One idea to deter would-be thieves is to move them to the rear of the garden – it seems most of these have gone from front or side view gardens. Fit a security light or porch light, or someone suggested tying some fishing line around the object and attach it to a jam jar that is at a

height so that when it falls it lands on a paving slab or such-like. Any further ideas gratefully accepted.

Don’t forget, we open the Saxilby Police Office the first Wednesday of each month from 10am – 12 noon if you want to come and talk to us – next one Wednesday 4 May 2011, then 1st June 2011.

We would also like to take this opportunity to encourage residents to be more vigilant within your communities and are keen for you to report to police any suspicious individuals seen in the area, in particular cold callers going house to house without a peddler’s licence. Are you ready for the digital switchover?

What and why is it happening?

TV is going digital. The existing analogue TV signal will be switched off and replaced with a new, stronger digital TV signal. It will mean that almost everyone will be able to receive digital TV through an aerial (Freeview).

Digital TV also uses less broadcast space which means that after switchover, there will be more room for new services such as wireless broadband, local TV and High Definition Television (HDTV).

To keep your TV service, you will need to convert your TVs to digital before your area’s switchover date.

When will I switch?

There are 5 transmitter groups in the Yorkshire TV region that will switch from analogue to digital TV at different times in 2011. When you switch depends on which transmitter group you are watching.

Getting your home ready 1. How many TVs do you have in your home?

Consider every TV set that you want to continue watching. Any TV left unconverted will not work after switchover.

2. Do you like to record TV programmes?

Video and DVD recorders will still play back and record but most won’t be able to record one channel while you watch another. If you enjoy recording, consider getting a digital TV recorder that will also convert your TV. 3. Your TV aerial Most rooftop aerials and some set-top aerials will be fine after switchover. If you decide to get a service like Freeview, BT Vision or Top-Up TV you can check your aerial by visiting the aerial test on Teletext page 284. If you decide to get your digital TV service from Sky TV, Virgin Media, Freesat from Sky or Freesat on all the TV sets in your home, you won't need an aerial.

4. What to consider with a satellite service If you choose a digital satellite service and live in a listed building or conservation area, you may need planning permission.

5. Will switchover affect my radio?

Your radio equipment will not be affected by switchover.

How much does switching cost?

Switching to digital doesn’t need to be expensive. The price will vary depending on the digital choices you make. The things to consider are: • The number of TVs in your home you choose to convert.

• Whether you choose to pay one upfront cost or pay monthly for a subscription service.

• If you choose to buy a standard digital box, an HD digital box, an integrated digital TV (iDTV), or a digital TV recorder (which will also convert your TV to digital).

• If you choose to subscribe additional channels (e.g. movies and sports) or services (e.g. broadband, telephone or HD TV).

Am I eligible for extra help?

The Help Scheme can provide everyone aged 75 and over or eligible disabled with everything needed to switch one TV to digital.

at St Helen's Church, Thorney

The Methodist Church and the Anglican Churches at Collingham have entered into a formal covenant and aim to have regular united acts of worship as well as working together in other ways. Services in other villages have therefore been included so that people can see some of what is on offer in our united group of East Trent churches. Since we are in interregnum that is, without a minister, some services are led by lay people.
