T
renton and Grosse Ile — two neighboring southeast Michigan communities with a combined population of nearly 30,000 people — offer visitors and residents alike a wide range of options when it comes to sports events, entertainment, dining, entertainment and relaxation. Some of the must-see facilities in Trenton include the Cultural Center, the Historical Museum, Trenton Veterans Memorial Library, the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, Elizabeth Park and Marina and the Kennedy Recreation and Aquatic Center. There are numerous festivals and events throughout the year, including an annual Trenton Summer Festival the last week of June, held in the downtown area on West Jefferson Avenue. Several major events are held in the 100-plus-acre Elizabeth Park, including the PNC Roar on the River the third week in July and Jazz on the River the first weekend in August. Downtown Trenton also comes to life each October with a colorful and festive Scarecrow Festival.
Drone view of downtown Trenton. This year’s summer festival will be on June 22-24. Activities are scheduled throughout the summer, especially for children, so make sure to check the City of Trenton website, www.trentonmi.org for concerts and outdoor movie showings, at the Cultural Center. In the fall guests can stroll back in time at the annual Somewhere in Time at Elizabeth Park, which is held the third Sunday in September. On Good Friday before Easter guests can enjoy the Great marshmallow drop at Elizabeth Park. The city is the site of three annual parades, including Me-
morial Day, Christmas and High School Homecoming parades. You may want to stroll through the Cultural Center at the corner of West and Edsel. Each season brings many great traditions, including a seasonal community garden, perennial exchange, children’s cooking classes, movement and dance, arts-and-craft classes, concerts and movies, Christmas teas, and shopping in the craft store located in the barn at the back of the property. The Cultural Center house itself — a historic Trenton homestead — also provides a popular venue for “themed” parties. Make sure to check out the Trenton Veterans Memorial Municipal library right across from the Kennedy complex while you are here. Along with plenty of activities, you can rent your favorite movie or book while in town with a valid library card. The Kennedy Recreation Center is home to the aquatic center — a 13,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art outdoor facility that offers many attractions to keep visitors swimming! The indoor center is also a hockey haven, featuring some of the best high school hockey in the state — from the 10-time state champion Trenton Trojans to numerous high-profile tournaments. The Detroit River offers some of Michigan’s finest fishing and boating, and Elizabeth Park Marina puts you right in the action. The Marina includes four launching wells, four loading wells, and a 52-slip transient mooring facility. This award-winning marina was built in 1993 through an Urban Waterways Grant. It is open 24 hours a day from April 1 to Oct. 31. Access to the marina can be obtained from the entrance on the Grosse Ile Parkway, 2 2018 TRENTON & GROSSE ILE VISITORS’ GUIDE • A PUBLICATION OF THE TRENTON TRIB
which is also one of the access points to Grosse Ile. At Elizabeth Park you can rent a Kayak at Riverside Kayak Connection on Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting. Kayak fishing boats are also available. The kayak livery is located just inside the main entrance to the park. The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge’s Humbug Marsh area is a 410-acre parcel of land on Trenton’s southern end that also extends into the neighboring community of Gibraltar. Welcome to Trenton & Grosse Ile! From page 1
last mile of undeveloped shoreline along the U.S. mainland of the Detroit River and contains critical habitat for many rare fish and wildlife species. A new Visitors Center and ship dock and fishing pier recently were constructed at the Refuge Gateway property off of West Jefferson near Vreeland Road as part of a long-term effort to make the site a recreation asset to the region. Grosse Ile is the largest island on the Detroit River. It is connected to the mainland by two bridges — the non-toll public-owned “free” bridge just south of Elizabeth Park in Trenton, and a privately owned toll bridge in Riverview, between Pennsylvania and Sibley Roads. The township of Grosse Ile is actually composed of 12 islands. The largest area — or main island — is actually in two sections divided by a long canal that runs from the lower west side to the upper east side. For residents and visitors alike, Grosse Ile is a Mecca for boating and other water recreation. The entire island can be experienced by using the green spaces bike and walking trail that span the entire community. The community also has its own 600-plus-acre municipally-run airport on the Island’s south end. Originally the Grosse Ile Naval Air Station, the airport caters mostly to private pilots and is an occasional resting spot for visiting blimps. Grosse Ile offers numerous major events throughout the year, including the IslandFest in late spring, the Paint the Town Red Homecoming weekend celebration in the fall (including the popular “Tour de Ile” bike tour) and the Island Glow, which kicks off the holiday season. There are many family and hobby activities to be enjoyed at the Centennial Farms, Cultural and Equestrian Center located at 25797 Third Street on Grosse Ile. The main business hub is located on Macomb Street with plenty of shopping and restaurants with walking friendly access. The island also features an airport, two golf courses, three yacht clubs, tennis and fitness center and alpaca farm to explore.
