This year’s Trenton Summer Festival has special significance for all those who dedicate a considerable amount of their time each year to planning and overseeing the long-running event. The Festival Committee unexpectedly lost two of its key members following last year’s event. Maureen Barr, who coordinated the art and crafters, died suddenly Aug. 22. Al Sidebottom Jr., who coordinated the festival vendors along with his wife, Kay, since its inception, died Nov. 11 after a lengthy illness. Barr and Sidebottom will be remembered at the event with two very distinct golf carts that will be driven by Scott Barr and Kay Sidebottom as they make their rounds. The committee has vowed to regroup and have another outstanding festival planned for 2019. On Thursday, bikers will hit town. The American Legion Ride will park bikes on Harrison and roll out Friday morning for the annual ride. The Nibble Stroll and Roll also returns on Thursday evening with great nibbles and a fun stroll through a busy

festival set up. The Mayor’s Breakfast, a traditional kickoff event, will be held at in the tent next to TV’s Grand Event Friday at 8am. The cost is $20 and tickets are available at City Hall. The Trenton Summer Festival turned its attention last year to promoting the trail systems coming to Trenton. This year, on the weekend of June 28-30, expanding on the “trail of thoughts,” the fest will include a 5k, 8K and 1K run and walk utilizing the new pathways on Saturday morning. New this year, under the direction of Al Sidebottom III, is Family Square. Replacing the popular Kids Korner, Family Square will feature many new hands on games. He is also requesting high school groups seeking to raise money host a game. Each game will cost $1 to play and the game host will benefit from the proceeds. Interactive exhibits where kids can Touch a Truck, a Zamboni, a Model T and maybe a Speedboat will be available. They will also feature a 3rd grade art show from Hedke and

Anderson students along with several other new features. Speaking of art, The Detroit Institute of Arts joins the fun at the Family Square and will be available Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.5 p.m. for children to create a unique and interactive piece of art. The entertainment lineup provides a musical journey through the decades featuring “The Look,” a 70s tribute band, and Mega 80s Friday night and The Class of ’98 and Atomic Radio will hit the Discover Downriver GAP Realty Group stage Saturday night. Three stages will be used

STREET KINGS ROLLED ICE CREAM ~

Thailand’s popular “fried” ice cream comes to Trenton again this year, where the process of making the food is just as enticing as eating the food itself. It’s almost hypnotic to watch Street Kings hardworking rollers/ scoopers/employees create each custom order atop the “fryer.” The excitement takes place at Street Kings rolled ice cream truck at Festival. Here’s how it works: A staff member pours a base liquid onto the ice-cold metal surface (holding at 8 degrees). The liquid freezes into a creamy texture, upon which the staff member chops, mushes and prods it. At this point, they add whatever flavors you’ve asked for and spread the base out super-thinly across the cold surface. Then, in a process that’s part performance art/part manual labor, he uses a spatula and scrapes columns of the ice cream forward, creating multiple rolls that get picked up, placed vertically in a cup and covered in your chosen toppings. Yummy and enjoy!

OUR MELT BAR ~

This new edition to the festival food lineup will certainly be cheesy! The Ohio-based ”Our Melt Bar” will offer a super melty grilled cheese with up to five cheeses, along with various noodle bowls, deli subs, cheesecake and ice cream.

OMER BUZIMKIC -WOOD FLOWER CREATIONS ~

Make sure to visit Omer Buzimkic’s booth while visiting the Trenton Summer Festival. This is Buzimkic’s second visit to Trenton, where he will once again be making his special wood flower creations. Buzimkic is a home-improvement contractor by day and a craftsman by night. “I was tired of not being able to find ‘real’ dried plants in the stores, they were all plastic,” he said. “So I decided to make my own creations by drying plants, crafting tree branches for an arrangement base and painting the wood flowers to last a lifetime.” Many hours of work and time go into making one flower arrangement. Each one is unique with various colors and can also

TRENTON SUMMER SPONSORSHIP 2019

EVENT AT FESTIVAL PROMOTES TRAILS Happy Trails For You! That’s the focus of this year’s Trenton Summer Festival, as it once again turns its attention to promoting the trail systems and Trenton’s emerging Trail Town status. The Trenton Summer Festival “Trail Town Training 101” event is designed to showcase the amazing trail system and opportunities that already exist and will be expanding in the region. This is a great opportunity for building public awareness of the growing trail systems, both locally and state-wide, and Trenton’s role in helping to blaze the trail. The Trail Town Training 101 event is scheduled to take place on West Road during the Trenton Summer Festival, June 28, 29, 30, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. The goals of this third-year event include: Providing opportunity for festival visitors to explore

the links between Downriver’s trail system, its waterways and its outdoor recreation opportunities, bringing important recognition to the regional and statewide efforts. Providing opportunity for visitors to discover the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and Visitors Center. Providing opportunity for visitors to “talk trails” with agencies in the region and learn about the trail system and their many benefits and learn about Trenton’s emerging “Trail Town” status. Showcase private business partners, their products and services related to trails and outdoor recreation and the economic impact to the region. Educate public on “rules of the road” with tips from Bicycle experts. Among the vendors and agencies that will be on site include: General RV, Riverside Kayak

Connection, Outdoor Adventures, Michigan State Extension, Downriver Linked Greenways, Destination Downriver Coalition, Friends of the Detroit River, Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, Downriver Cycling Club, Healthy Trenton, and more. “We are very excited to build upon the momentum generated from last year’s event and share new information about the growing trail system and outdoor recreation opportunities, as well as, Trenton’s “Trail Town” initiative.” said Joann Gonyea, director of Trenton Parks and Recreation. As an added attraction, a small “safety town” will be set up where visitors can learn the bicycle rules of the road. For more information on participation and/or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Trenton Parks and Recreation at (734) 675-7300.

SOUTHERN FIREPITS ~

This is the first year Southern Fire Pits has had a booth at the Trenton Summer Festival and it is also the furthest North that Johnathan and Melissa McCray have ever traveled to show off their hand-crafted fire pits. “We make unique, functional art.” Said McCray. “We have been making fire pits for eight years in Florida, but publicly for two and half years. It started as a backyard hobby.” They look forward to meeting new people in Trenton, exploring Michigan and selling lots of fire pits. The fire pits are all made from repurposed propane gas tanks. All the art is drawn onto the tank, then cut out free hand with a plasma torch so no two are ever the same. The most popular pieces are the nautical designs and tree designs, but they can make anything. They do quite a bit of custom work. The family business will have the couple’s three boys — ages 19, 14, 9 — in tow this summer, as they exhibit at five shows in three weeks all over Michigan. More information can be found at Southern Fire Pits www.southernfirepits.com or www.facebook.com/southernfirepits.
