10 La Dolce Vita Just as the holiday season was getting started, the social and business communities learned of the passing of Valley philanthropist Craig Berge. His death was not expected, yet he leaves behind one of the most remarkable and amazing lives imaginable.

When I joined the staff of Trends in 1994, Craig Berge and his stunningly beautiful wife Nancy were some of the highest flyers. They were everywhere you looked and they were two of the kindest and most warm-hearted people I’ve met. But that was just one of the many facets of a man who had accomplished so much, yet seldom if ever wanted to draw any attention to himself.

Although Craig was born in Utah, he would forever call Arizona home. A graduate of the University of Arizona who later obtained an MBA from Arizona State University, Craig at a young age had already been recognized as one of the Who’s Who of American Universities and Colleges. He was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity too. Early on Craig embarked on an engineering path, yet was swayed by the family automobile business. With Craig’s leadership, Berge Ford became one of the top 100 Ford dealerships in the United States. Under the Berge umbrella, Craig and his family members made the Berge name one of the most renowned and respected car dealership empires in America. This was done while holding the vast auto group to a service of unmatched excellence and honesty. Craig also found great success in land development, farming and cattle operations. He also maintained strong ties and leadership positions with both universities he had attended.

Craig Berge was a gentleman who never said no to the philanthropic world. Together with his wife Nancy, he gained iconic status not only in the East Valley, but in central Phoenix as well as Tucson. Craig was a huge supporter of a vast number of local and national charities. The Friends of the Arizona Cancer Center in particular was an organization he and his wife helped to put on the map! He never forgot his U of A roots. Craig was a member of the Alumni Board of the university, a board trustee and later its chairman. Throughout his life he worked on countless civic and metropolitan development agencies and was honored constantly for his grand and amazing talents.

It was a privilege to know Craig Berge. He was a fine man, husband and father. He believed that you should always give back, an attitude that he would uphold always. He led an extraordinary life. People such as Craig Berge were the true empire builders who have made our state such a great place for so many.

Cornelis Hollander By Bill Dougherty
On one of the last cold mornings of December, I learned of the passing of internationally renowned Scottsdale jeweler-designer Cornelis Hollander. For the last year we all watched as he battled cancer through often hilarious posts on social media and the chance encounters some of us got to have with the fine gentlemen in his opulent store or on the yoga mats at Gainey Village Health Club & Spa. The first time I was introduced to Cornelis Hollander was in the early 1990s. I was in the Trends offices when Marcie Amory called the then publisher Danny Medina to extoll his talents and appeal. Trends was so taken by everything he showcased, that the publication decided to hold a high tea in his Scottsdale store for the Fashionalities, now known as Trendsetters. The store was absolutely packed to the gills with everyone who mattered at that time. Many of those adoring ladies have now since passed into the heavens. However, the generosity Cornelis showed to everyone who passed through those large glass doors was amazing. That in-store get together was one of the very first of many to come. Cornelis always thought outside-the-box and his ideas were brilliant. He became a huge supporter of this publication and our affiliated Trends Charitable Fund. He never said no to anything and his design talents were astonishing. Several years ago when I learned how gravely ill Linda Pope was, I asked Cornelis to design three rings that would signify the friendship Linda had forged with the two chairs of the Trends Charitable Fund Luncheon, Libby Cohen and Beth McRae. Since Linda was being honored at the luncheon as a Fabulous Phoenician, we wanted her to leave the afternoon with something more than flowers. Cornelis’s design was amazing and all three ladies gasped when presented with the gift from stage. I never dreamed that he would parish several years later from the same dreaded disease. Cornelis Hollander has left an indelible mark on our community. He created magic in his artistry for decades and won countless design awards throughout the world. His commitment to our philanthropic world was tried and true. His rarefied designs, good nature and hysterical sense of humor made for a true gentleman and a scholar. His bright and gentle light will shine for an eternity. To know Cornelis was to love him. He will be missed more than I can ever express.

Remembering ... 1992 Fabulous Phoenician Bruce Halle By Bill Dougherty
When I received a text on an early January morning that Bruce Halle had died I was sad, yet realized he lived a long and amazing life. That’s when the Trends telephone line started to ring off the hook! Every news station began to call our offices asking for a quote. I simply said, “Bruce Halle was one of the finest men I’ve met and one of the greatest philanthropists our state has and will ever see.” But there was so much more to say. In 1992 I was seated at Beat the Heat, as it was then called, with a group of friends. Bruce Halle was the year’s Fabulous Phoenician. Although at the time, I did not know him nor was I yet employed by Trends; he left a tremendous impression on me. His speech that evening from the stage was simple, humble and kind. Rather than take any credit for his earth-shaking commitments to Valley and National philanthropy, he simply thanked the audience for everything they had done to make Maricopa Country a better place for those who need assistance. He was truly amazing!

He will be missed more than I can express. Yet we must remember that he had an extraordinary and long life. One night one of our reporters called out sick for the Barrow Ball just as

Parties! Parties! Parties! That’s how most of us will remember the holiday season of 2017. I for one am delighted that it’s over. However, you will probably still find Christmas lights up until late January. Painful as it may be. We kicked off the season rather early in December. Now that our midcentury home in Paradise Valley is finally finished, Dennis Thompson and his team from the White House Design Studio blew the roof off the joint! The house was a festive spray of red gladiolas, cranberries with flora and white candles galore. Sorry folks no Christmas tree, too early in December and too trite. Dennis continued his magic on the patio transforming the place into a groovy and swank cocktail cabana. The big news of the night as everyone waited for their expensive autos to be returned courtesy of American Valet, were the parting gifts for all in the atrium. CC’s Sweet Sensations in Deer Valley (yes they deliver) has taken the upscale cake world by storm. Their spin on an old Scottsdale rum cake left party guest’s freaking out! Yes it was that good! My biggest worry of the night was the arrival of famed architect Richard Doria and his lovely wife Susan. Since we took very few liberties in the near 6 year renovation and preservation of our home, I wanted his approval. When they walked in the door, He smiled and simply said “very Dean Martin.” Continued on page 12

La Dolce Vita – Continued from page 10 About a week later a huge crowd of real estate agents and mortgage brokers gathered to raise their glasses to famed agent Ellie Shapiro on her birthday. You might remember that Ellie got the idea to become an agent while looking for a home for a friend in the early 1960s? Since then, the soft spoken dynamo not only became the most successful real estate agent in the Valley, but also in the state. Ellie has been profiled in Forbes and Fortune and every local periodical imaginable. The afternoon, held at her beautiful Phoenix home, was one of the most elegant events I’ve attended yet. I still can’t believe I made the guest list? The party was the brain child of Shelley Caniglia and De Von Connors. The table’s cards read like a who’s who of upscale agents and brokers and family (they’re in the biz too). They included: Frank Madia, Karen Shapiro, Olivia Quist, Josefina Knoell, Walt Danley, Karen Shapiro, Anna Andreini Brophy, Sandy Baldwin, Laurie Shapiro and dozens more just like them. Vincent Guerithault of the world renowned Vincent on Camelback made a personal appearance, while the restaurant’s lovely General Manager Amy Fox, made sure everything came off in true Southwestern-French perfection. Guests feasted on hot French hors d’ oeuvres and sipped expensive imported champagne during the cocktail reception. Then we all took our respective seats and gushed over the splendid flowers that Floral Designs by Jeremiah created for the afternoon. We all dined on

an exquisite arugula salad and large planks of salmon. Ellie’s birthday cake, her very favorite a coconut and lemon confection, was delivered from Nordstrom Café at Scottsdale Fashion Square. During the festivities we all got to express our very favorite Ellie Shapiro memories. Since she was one of the hardest working board members the Trends Charitable Fund Board has ever had, I remembered a couple of her great quotes while working with her. When I asked Ellie one day in the Trends offices about her success she simply said, “Everyone wanted to know who I was sleeping with to get so many listings, I said I’m sleeping with my husband!” On her business relationship with Leona Helmsley (whom she adored) she simply said, “She drank Martinis, I drank Maalox.” You should have been there! In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That an unsuspecting socialite is about to get the boot from a worthy charity. That people over 40 have grown tired of new loud restaurants and that they’re going out of business. That the mean comments of a certain woman you all know only serve to isolate her even more. That it’s time for a passive aggressive gentleman to give it a rest and concentrate on his roving wife. That we all know someone who pretends to come from affluence even though she did not. Now you’re all caught up for the next 15 minutes.

Spotlight on the Heard Museum On Saturday, Feb. 10, and Sunday, Feb. 11, the Heard Museum will host the 28th-Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Competition. Men and women from across the U.S. and Canada will compete in the renowned competition on an equal field for cash prizes and the title of World Champion Hoop Dancer. Each contestant will represent unique aspects of their heritage by uniting dancing strength, creativity, intricate footwork and contemporary dance influences. Dancers are judged on their precision, timing/rhythm, showmanship, creativity and speed. Contestants compete in one of five categories during the two-day event: Tiny Tots (5 and under), Youth (6-12), Teen (13-17), Adult (18-39) and Senior (40 and older). Individual routines use as few as four and as many as 50 hoops, which are manipulated to create a variety of designs including animals, insects and globes. This celebrated competition attracts thousands of attendees from around the world and is a testament to the long-standing tradition of the American Indian sport. Prices vary for admission, but fees include day-of museum admission. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and folding chairs for this outdoor event. You can learn more at heard.org/event/hoop

Is this affecting Paradise Valley pricing? Yes, there are some large homes being built in Arcadia and Arcadia’s price points are at an all time record high. If anything, Arcadia’s high prices have helped Paradise Valley. You are able to get a larger lot and better quality at an even better price point. Are new builds in Paradise Valley and Arcadia attracting buyer’s more than existing estates? Buyers today love new! New construction is performing very well in our market. Buyers love to have the newest and best home with today’s finishes and style. Modern and contemporary style is the trend. Also more than ever, buyers are paying for quality and smaller homes. The days of every builder building a mansion are over. Is vertical living still as big as it was a few years ago? Vertical living is still popular with a number of developments throughout Scottsdale and Phoenix but we have seen a big push to resort properties. With the Ritz Carlton and Mountain Shadows residences in Paradise Valley being build, our Paradise Valley residents have an option to stay in Paradise Valley but downsize and have every amenity at their fingertips. What are some of the most desirable lots to buy a home on or build on? It is hard to find a great lot in today’s market. Some of the best lots I sell before they even go to the market. Buyers are looking for the best of the best lots to build on. My buyers love views, so more than ever lots and new builds with views, especially between Camelback and Mummy Mountains, do exceptionally well.

Where is the market heading? I am very excited about our real estate market, especially luxury market. 2017 was one of our biggest years yet and 2018 is off to an amazing start. The demand is here and Arizona as a whole is on the radar as one of the strongest real estate markets in the U.S. I am planning for a very positive year with lots of sales. We should continue to see a small but steady increase. Mac Mansions/Starter Palaces were once the go to for homes in the area. Is this still true, or are remodels and preservations becoming popular? More than ever buyers are wanting smaller homes. They are willing to pay a bigger price for over the top quality and a floorplan that has no wasted space. Remodeled homes are also preforming well, but it is key to complete the remodel 100% with good quality. Is there a downsizing trend happening in our area? Within Paradise Valley somewhat ... but only with true empty-nesters. These buyers are downsizing when it comes to square footage, but they are not necessarily giving up the upgrades. They expect the quality, views and amenities when possible.

John’s Green Gables was the first of many stops along the way. On a recent evening, we visited Café ZuZu at the Hotel Valley Ho. I had never dined there but had been for happy hour and cocktails years ago. It was indeed a treat. First, I must start out by saying that our server Zack was such a pleasure and really helped us with our selections. They are known for using fresh ingredients from local farmers such as Duncan’s Trading Co. and McLendon’s Select Local Harvest. The ingredients and presentation are fresh and top notch. We started out with two appetizers, the crispy calamari and the Hawaiian ahi tuna tartare. The calamari was excellent and prepared with jalapenos in a spicy garlic aioli sauce. The ahi tuna tartare was decadent and served with spicy chicharrones. Both were equally delicious. We also had the house gem lettuce salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, cheddar, marcona almonds and candied bacon with a delectable green goddess dressing.
For our entrees we had the Hokkaido scallops with shellfish butter, asparagus, fried meyer lemon, toasted couscous and pine nuts and also the Ribeye charbroiled and served with cippolini onion, asparagus, king trumpet mushroom, grilled herb pesto and black pepper tapenade. Both entrees were outstanding. The presentation and the flavor of the scallops with the combination of the fried meyer lemons was not only unique but truly remarkable. The ribeye melted in your mouth and was prepared perfectly. For our side we went with Zack’s recommendation of roasted shishito peppers with ponzu and crispy garlic. He did not steer us wrong. For dessert we had the chocolate cake which was a tossup between that and the peanut butter cheesecake. That just means we will have to return for the cheesecake! They also have a great Sunday brunch with a build your own bloody mary and mimosa bar! That is right up my alley so I plan on returning for that! Café ZuZu was delicious in every way, so please check it out inside the Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale.

Willow This beautiful 9-week-old tabby arrived at the Arizona Humane Society as a stray when a Good Samaritan heard her meowing in their neighborhood. Upon arrival, Willow was too young for adoption and spent some time in a Foster Hero’s home where she put on some much needed weight. Now this girl is always up for any adventure you put in front of her and absolutely loves playing with toys! When she’s not prancing around, Willow is the best snuggle buddy there is. The Best of Flair Reviewed by Bill Dougherty Fleur Cowles was no stanger to the world of publishing in 1950 when she founded Flair Magazine. She had once told Time Magazine that she had made it in a man’s world and she wasn’t kidding either. Her marriage to publishing giant Gardner Cowles seemed the perfect fit to an already incredible career. Though the two divorced in the mid-1950s, Mrs. Cowles had already set the literary world a blaze a few years earlier with Flair Magazine. Described by one critic as “a fancy bouillabaisse of Vogue, Town & Country and Holiday, etc.,” Flair would become the most talked about magazine of the decade. A lavish publication filled with art form, gate folds, die-cuts, booklets and accordion folder leaflets; there was nothing quite like Flair on any newsstand in the world. Sadly, the magazine Time referred to as the most brilliant thing to come along in decades, lasted only one year. Though it was rich with columns and interviews from the likes of Winston Churchill, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, Clare Boothe Luce, Tennessee Williams and Tallulah Bankhead; the magazine simply could not sustain the trememdous production costs. Today orginal copies of Flair are some of, if not the most sought-after twentieth century publication by collectors. This year, however, Rizzoli has issued a limited edition of The Best of Flair; chosen by Fleur Cowles shortly before her death at 101 years. This is a great addition to any coffee table or book shelf. Besides don’t you want to see what all the fuss is about?
