New Legacy Section for Trends
As newspaper obits grow in cost and decline in attractiveness, the time seems right to launch a Trends Legacy section to feature profiles of noted Scottsdale/PV residents who have passed.
Such a section would also feature space for upscale businesses which serve to help those making the dreaded but needed “final arrangements” for a loved one. End-of-life services are needed very quickly at that sad time. Families need to be aware of the best venues, musicians, caterers, florists, printers, mortuaries, cemeteries, and much more.
To learn more on the topic, I began chatting with a longtime friend, Eileen Bailey. A publicist and author, Eileen now collaborates on remembrances and helps families create meaningful memorials. Nothing is cookie-cutter. If you read her poignant portrait of Ed Mell in last month’s Trends, you’ll see that Eileen’s goal is always to capture someone’s true essence.
Eileen can be reached at eileenbailey1@cox.net; 602-882-1408.

WORLDWIDE NEW TO TRENDS: A FITTING FAREWELL
Our
are creative and passionate people with a clear focus on customer satisfaction.
LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to June
By Bill Dougherty
People are talking about our two new Fabulous Phoenicians and 10 Trendsetters for 2024. Our Fabulous Phoenicians are Joan and Jerry Colangelo. We are so thrilled and honored to bestow this award created in 1982 for a lifetime achievement of charitable and philanthropic work, on this amazing couple. I cannot think of two people who deserve this award more than they do. I am sure you’ll agree.
Our ten new Trendsetters include: Deanna Biddulph, Wendy Dewane, Cathy Dickey, Anne-Marie Dobbs, Amy Hair, Karen Hayenga, Joy Johnson, Bari Mears, Andrea Moseley and Carey Pena. This is the first award to honor women in Arizona, created in 1985. We poured through a great deal of applications and we thank all the Fabulous Phoenicians and Trendsetters who submitted applications on behalf of so many Valley women. All the ladies chosen represent various facets of our community. Some are more high profile than others and some are under the radar in charitable support and giving. We are so delighted and privileged to have all of you. We thank you for everything you have done to make our community a better place for so many. Our Fabulous Phoenicians and ten new Trendsetters will be showcased on Saturday, November 9th at the Camelback inn. We hope you will join us.
When we make a mistake, we always want to right our wrong. In the February issue of this publica tion, we credited the wrong florist for the spectacular Barrow Ball of 2024. Angela and Mark Karp of Angelic Grove transformed the grand ball room of the Biltmore into absolute wonderment, not the florist we gave credit to. Our sincere apologies.
IN COCKTAIL POLO NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT ...
A very generous couple in the community lent their private jet to an “upstanding business professional.” When the aircraft was returned, cleaners discovered small suspicious vials of white powder hidden throughout the plane. While we cannot confirm or deny what the substance was, we can tell you that the individual involved is far to old to act in such a manner. A so called “family man.” Just painful.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
The Clayton House proved the perfect venue for the American Cancer Society and their event Hope Blooms in the Secret Garden. The event, which has gone through many transformations over the years, has returned to a black-tie affair. The majestic garden-themed night brought of some of the finest and very philanthropic members of the community. The mission-driven night raised a lot of needed funds for
the organization and served as an educational evening as well. Cathy Brown and Lamont Yoder chaired the memorable evening. Cathy arrived in shades of teal, gold and black and looked stunning! Then Lorraine Bergman walked in a heart-stopping hot pink, so we’ll just call it a tie for the belle of the ball. Both ladies looked exceptional! It was an extraordinary night.

Meet the Jewels from Ipanema
When did Jewels From Ipanema become a brand?
Over a glass of wine, while preparing a meal, we discussed the beauty of Brazil and the array of gemstones native to Denise’s home. Simpatico! Jimmy Chase, a successful jeweler and designer over decades had always wanted to create a colored stone line and Denise an interior designer and jewelry designer to expand her jewelry designs. Perfecto! A passion of elegance and innovative design, Jewels from Ipanema offers a wide selection of jewelry, including rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings set in 18k yellow and 18k white gold based on preference. Clients are engaged in a truly unique and personal journey by purchasing from their collection, choosing from an array of gemstones, metals, and designs. We pride ourselves on creating distinctive pieces that reflect the individuality and preferences of our clients.
What’s your jewelry philosophy?
Wearing jewelry should make you feel good, and tell a story. There is something powerful about being adorned with gold and gemstones. The metals and the stones are of the Earth, and find their own path to end up as a meaningful adornment.
What part of the jewelry designing and making process gives you the most happiness?
When our perfect piece finds the perfect home. The joy that comes from being part of creating a beautiful piece that will forever mark the celebration of a moment in time, and lifetime memories.
How do art and design merge in the elaboration of your work?
Denise has traveled extensively through Europe, Latin America and Africa. The global images, flavors and cultures that she has experienced have inspired her to brand in some way, shape, or form. We take the beauty from her experiences and interpret them by designing it as a piece of wearable art.
Which materials do you like working with the most?
Jewels From Ipanema works primarily 18K Yellow and White Gold paired with Brazilian gems and diamonds. Starting with the elements of the Earth, we get to be part of the journey, bringing the ultimate finished piece of jewelry that will bring joy for generations.
What makes your collections unique in the industry?
Our collections have unconventional backgrounds. Just as we are inspired by the obviously beautiful aspects of life such as nature or great works of art, we are equally inspired by humble yet profound experiences. Jewels From Ipanema first collection, titled Picolé, translated as popsicle in English, draws its unique design by Denise Monti’s inspired on her childhood in Sao Paulo Brazil, collecting popsicle sticks resembling the design pattern featured throughout the collection.
What is your favorite part about being a designer?
We absolutely love what we do. Jewelry allows us to share our visual and physical experiences through a tangible beautiful object, and being able to share it with people who appreciate it is incredibly
fulfilling. We love the flexibility that owning your own business allows and being able to work dynamically with the community around us.
What’s your vision for the future of your brand?
Creating more unique and beautiful designs for our brand, and seeing more people wearing and celebrating Jewels from Ipanema by expanding our presence and recognition, online and through social media.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF THE VALLEY 2024
The Westin Kierland opened its doors to an impressive array of ladies and gentlemen and the youth of our Valley in early March. Their much-anticipated gala showcased the talent of 12 individuals that are helping to shape the young lives of so many in our community, while making their lives even better. Education was paramount at the event.
The night highlighted the 2024 Youth of the Year as well as the Moffett family and Cresent Crown Distributing. These have been preeminent and longstanding donors to the organization. Both believe in putting the youth of our Valley first. They hold a very special place for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley. It was a brilliant night!

Sixth Annual Legacy Luncheon
The Arizona Biltmore resort was the perfect setting for the sixth annual Legacy Luncheon for the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute. Famed party planner and bestselling author David Monn addressed a beautifully dressed crowd of lovely women and handsome gentlemen. Cathy Dickey and Ann-Marie Dobbs co-chaired the visually stunning afternoon. They did a smashing job! Jane Jozoff welcomed all. The melodic sounds of the Firebird String Quartet played blissfully in the background. Brian O’Connor showcased a special tribute to his late mother. Famed florist Laura Dowling served and the moderator into the afternoon. Sarah Suggs, the organization’s CEO, closed the afternoon. DANCING WITH THE STARS ARIZONA 2024

be very pleased with the massive event the two just chaired the other night at The Phoenician. Dancing With The Stars Arizona proved yet again that given the right instruction anyone can learn to dance and compete too. An opulent cocktail reception got things going prior to dinner being served. Then the performances started and what a night it was! Thirteen for luck was the magic number of the evening as 13 community leaders and volunteers
competed to raise needed funds for the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona. World-renowned dance judges Linda Dean and Tony Meredith lent their talents to score the dancers. All involved had a marvelous time. Ashleigh Schufeldt, the organization’s special events manager, does a remarkable job each year. She manages to find new talent that will dedicate their time and efforts for a phenomenal cause. Terrie Fry looked stunning in a beautiful embroidered and beaded jacket.

Changing the Lives of So Many
The Gateway for Cancer Research keeps coming up in the philanthropic community. Can you tell us about the organization?
Established in 1991, Gateway for Cancer Research funds the world’s most innovative and potentially life-changing phase I and II clinical trials for ALL types of cancer. These studies are the first step in evaluating new or new uses for cancer drugs and therapies.
How has the community stepped up to support the event? Nothing’s more powerful than like-minded individuals uniting. Along with Gateway Celebrity Fight Night chairs Dr. Stacie and Mr. Richard J Stephenson, this year’s event is supported by a dynamic 30-member committee, with each member having a cancer story. Led by co-chairs Amy Ross and Molly Stockley, these community leaders have brought new sponsors, donors and supporters into the Gateway fold.
What can guests expect at the upcoming Gateway Celebrity Fight Night?
Celebrity Fight Night aligns the biggest names in music, entertainment and sports with our community to raise funds for charity. Now Gateway Celebrity Fight Night, all event proceeds support the quest to end cancer as we know it. The 30th annual affair is set for Saturday, April 27 at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. It boasts an entertainment lineup that includes David Foster as musical director; NSYNC member Joey Fatone as emcee; comedian Caroline Rhea as celebrity auctioneer; TV personality Lawrence Zarian as red carpet host; Katharine McPhee as guest performer; and Grammy-winning superstar Michael Bublé as headlining artist.
Can you tell us about the Gateway clinical trial that will be featured at the event?
Fight Night has long supported Barrow Neurological Institute. This year’s gala will spotlight an incredible phase I Gateway-funded trial led by Yoshie Umemura, MD, division chief of neuro-oncology at the Ivy Brain Tumor Center, a program of Barrow Neurological Institute. The trial, which is based at the University of Michigan where Dr. Umemura was based before relocating to Phoenix, is evaluating the safety and efficacy of an already-approved drug for patients diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and deadliest type of malignant brain tumor in adults.

Phoenix Children’s Hospital held their always-very-fun evening at the Arizona Biltmore on a beautiful spring evening. Corinne Brakan and Michelle Tremblay, who chaired the big bash, decided to hold the event on the massive lawn, just north of the lobby. It proved the perfect night and it raised much-needed funds for the hospital. The dreamy Ibiza
Nights theme worked well with the casual atmosphere of the evening as well. DJ Pauly D lent his musical talents to the affair and the resort pulled out all the stops with a fantastic array of foods and cocktails. Jenna Repta looked smashing in a spectrum of spring colors. It was absolutely perfect!

The very prestigious Honor Ball chaired this year by Jill Krigsten and Jennifer Schuitemaker dazzled for all in attendance. This year Priscilla and Michael Nicholas were honored by HonorHealth Foundation for their tireless commitment and dedication to the community. The Camelback Inn pulled out all the stops for
the festive and beautiful night. After Dark Valet made sure keys and cars were returned without waiting or effort and the end of the night.

Spring is in the Air with Carolina Herrera
By Heather Wagenhals
How did you get into the fashion industry?
I started it right out of school, and it was minimal. One collection sustained the next. As a small designer, I was required to wear all the hats of the business, from design, making the samples in the garment district and selling them, doing the marketing and production, and just going on the road to trunk shows.
What was your experience like during the time of your label?
I created my own collection for eight years and learned so much. I got to work with the greatest stores, Neiman’s and stores worldwide, and had a lot of overlap in clients with Herrera. Many creative directors spend their careers in a design studio. I feel grateful to have experienced all aspects of the business. When I received a call that Mrs. Herrera was beginning the process of retiring, would I be interested in consulting? It was like a dream because I have such reverence for this house. It was that total experience that prepared me to do Herrera well because to reinvent a house, you have to really understand every component of it.
Tell us a little bit about your newest collection.
Spring was shown at the Whitney Museum of Art on the ground floor. This big glass room on a gorgeous early fall, late summer day. It was about a streamlined idea of beauty and femininity and clean, linear silhouettes and soft-color architectural shapes. Color, to me, is my first step in creating a collection. This season is lilac, soft yellow, rose pinks, chocolate browns, blacks, whites, and the muse for the season was very much this idea of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and this oversized cotton shirt tucked into a sleek pencil skirt that was just above ankle length and a kitten heel and taking that and adding the drama and the energy that is Herrera.
What do you see as the greatest fashion trend for the future of 2024?
The fall collection we showed in February during fashion week. It’s beautiful. We showed it on top of a building in the financial district. It was this idea of power; making a woman feel her most powerful and dressing powerfully and with detailed architectural flourishes. It’s never an end of one season, and the beginning of the next. It’s a river that’s flowing. I take ideas from one and develop them further another time. And it’s often about an idea, a particular woman, or the woman that I’m meeting, or thinking of how someone looked in a dress and wanting to push that further. One top can be inspired by a piece I see in a museum or on the street or a button that’s inspired by a woman’s earring I may see at lunch. So, I really am collecting inspirations and weaving them into each collection.
Who inspired your craft?
I knew I wanted to do fashion before I knew fashion was a thing one could do. I was obsessed with clothes and getting dressed, both myself and my mom, telling her what to wear as a little kid. I was just always into clothes, and chasing beauty in whatever form that would take. Also, I would say the women I’ve been lucky to know throughout my life. The ultimate, most exciting thing for me is seeing a stranger wearing a piece I’ve made and how she’s wearing it. I’ve spent countless hours in fitting rooms in front of mirrors with women and really watching their eyes about what makes them feel beautiful, what they don’t like, and when they reach for a pocket or when they are adjusting something. That’s been the
greatest teacher for me, the thousands of women I’ve been able to dress and get to know over the past several years.
If you could meet any fashion designer, living or dead, who would it be?
It’s a hard question. Christian Dior. Yves Saint Laurent. I admire Yves Saint Laurent for so many reasons. I admire what he did with color. To me, it is unrivaled. I also admire the world he created, his homes, his gardens, and his art. It was a holistic dedication to beauty that inspires me.
Tell us about your special relationship with Neiman Marcus.
Neiman Marcus is phenomenal. Partner of Herrera and a great friend since before I was at Herrera. I grew up in Atlanta just wandering Neiman’s, looking and exploring and touching and dreaming. It’s a magical place, an incredible business, an incredible part of America’s fashion story and legacy. I’ve met so many women and got to know the clients so well in the store and at events like these.

FRESH START GALA 2024
Neiman Marcus, Scottsdale, made their presence known at the annual Fresh Start Gala at The Phoenician the other night. A lavish cocktail reception, which included the Dallas specialty store’s greatest collection on the runway didn’t disappoint. Fashion Producer Margeret Merrett made sure the show dazzled! The Carolina Herrera spring collection was fabulous, so were many of the guests in attendance. Everyone was introduced to the line’s Creative Director Wes Gordan. Kim McWaters, who looked stunning, welcomed the crowd. Michelle Kerrick took
home the Founder’s Award. Several other ladies including Cindy Watts, Kim McWaters and Letitia Frye were honored with the Empowering Women To Thrive award. Founder Pat Petznick Wick looked picture perfect. Christine Boubek stole in night in a heart-stopping scarlet and blue number. Proceeds serve to benefit women in our community to make them the very best they can be through programs aimed at selfsufficiency. You should have been there!

Arizona Humane Society’s Papago Park Campus Now Open
Arizona’s most vulnerable pets have a new refuge as the Arizona Humane Society’s (AHS) Rob & Melani Walton Papago Park Campus is now open. In a time when AHS continues to care for an unprecedented amount of sick, injured and abused pets in our community, the twostory, state-of-the-art facility will allow AHS to offer comprehensive medical and behavioral care unlike any other shelter in the country.
Located near Papago Park at the juncture of the 202 and 143 freeways, the addition of the new $51 million facility to AHS’ unique System of Care will provide the physical resources to best serve the Valley in a time that it is needed the most. The more centralized location will also offer additional resources for pet owners and expanded veterinary care access for pets with nowhere else to turn.
With a focus on being a hospital first, AHS’ new Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital will help even more homeless pets receive the highest quality of care and rehabilitation while on the road to their forever homes.
Within the Watts Family Medical Complex, dogs will receive care in our Canine Critical Care Center, the Withycombe Family Mutternity Suites and the Susan and Mark Mulzet Parvo Intensive Care Unit. Cats will receive equally specialized care in the Cece Claudio Feline Critical Care Center and Doris Norton Kitten Nursery Unit.
Once treated, all pets make a stop in the BISSELL Pet Foundation Spay/Neuter Unit before finding either temporary shelter for continued healing thanks to the Ann Siner Foster Wing or await their new family in the Nina Mason Pulliam P.E.T. Center.
This community space, featuring a partnership with Scottsdale-based Echo Coffee, encourages the public to enjoy the Jamie L. Middleton Welcome Lobby before visiting the Sandra and Wendell Smith Dog Adoption Center or Daryl and Chip Weil Cat Adoption Center.
The Papago Park Campus aims to be a Valley destination of learning and connection for animal lovers. Not only is this campus the site of ongoing youth programs and education camps as well as behavior training for pet owners in need, this facility will also act as a teaching hospital for students from Midwestern University Veterinary School and the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine as they receive hands-on training during their last year of clinical rotations.

ARIZONA HUMANE SOCIETY CAMPUS GRAND OPENING
Chief Executive Officer Dr. Steve Hansen must be so very pleased for the fine team assembled at the Arizona Humane Society. Just the other night they opened the doors of their brilliant new campus and what a night it was! The capital campaign that has secured the donations of fine members of the community and corporations finally paid off in a big
way. So many volunteers of this amazing organization where on hand to wish Dr. Hansen and all involved a brilliant toast to their great success.
While there are far to many people to mention, we ask that you enjoy the coverage of a truly brilliant evening. Know that your donations help to change the lives of so many animals in so many ways.

Heart Ball in the ’90s thru the Millennium
1991-2001
A lot of “firsts” by these chairmen and significant accomplishments by the AHA during this decade. Although fund raising is never a part of the Heart Ball format the night of the event, during the year leading up to the Ball, there were car raffles and jewelry raffles.
American Heart Association
• First Nationwide Heart Walk in 1992
• AHA funded doctors awarded Nobel Prize in 1992 and 1998
• Healthy meals for Americans Act requiring schools to serve meals that meet certain dietary guidelines
• AHA release recommendations for policies to work toward a smoke-free generation
• Heart-Check mark program launched to help consumers find healthy products at grocery store
• AHA funded researcher reports that Mechanical Pumps can help patients awaiting transplant
Dana Jirauch 1992
“My platform was to educate children and their families in areas with the lowest economic demographics. Funds raised provided Heart Healthy kits both in English and Spanish on the Indian reservation and schools primarily in south Phoenix and Avondale area.”
Betty
& Ham McRae 1991
“My theme was “Around the World with Heart” as Ham & I had traveled to Egypt and fell in love with the spectacular pyramids. There were no flowers used in the décor – tall palm fronds and feathers were used. There was a large replica of the Sphinx in the cocktail area. My colors were Malachite, Lapis, Cornelian and Gold.”
Phoenix Heart Ball in the ‘80s – Did you know….
• The first raffle at the Addressing Luncheon was instituted to underwrite the postage for the invites
• Heart Ball 101 was established and continues today as the training and educational program for new committee members
• David Foster and Josh Groban were attendees and the entertainment at one of the Heart Balls!
• The largest attendance ever of 1069 in The Phoenician Ballroom. (The Fire Marshall was not happy!)
• Halle Heart Center was opened
Lynn Custer 1994
“My theme was “A Renaissance Evening” –we even had a knight in shining armour on a horse greeting our guests. I am thankful I had the honor of chairing the 1994 Phx Heart Ball and raising approximately $800,000 for the AHA.”
Robyn Lee & Rich Rector 1993
“My theme was French Impressionists and Living Art. We even had cancan dancers! I believe I’m the first and only chairman who was pregnant during chairmanship.”

RETROSPECTIVE: HEART BALL
Nancy Hanley Eriksson 1995
“The mission of the AHA was very important to me since both of my grandfathers and my father passed away from heart disease as well as several aunts and uncles. It was so meaningful to know my platform was helping to raise awareness of heart disease including how to live a healthier life. There were kits that were handed out at grade schools that taught the students about the “do’s and don’ts” for a healthy heart. The philosophy was the earlier they learn this, the better choices they will make in their own lives.”
Priscilla & Mike Nicholas 1997
“This was the first time the Heart Ball netted over $1,000,000. A concept I started was called “Pacemakers” which were $1000 donations with recognition on a plaque at the AHA Office. It raised over $100,000.”
Bonnie Martin 1996
“I had a wonderful committee of about 60 talented women who wanted to create a Heart Ball that would exceed the expectation of our 1000 guests. Our committee meetings always included Priscilla’s homemade Lemon Bars and my Caramel Pecan Dream Bars as our treat to attendees!”
Bonnie & David with their son and daughter
Jan Dupuy 1998
“As a nurse by profession, I was very proud to institute CPR training and certification for every committee member at the Halle Heart Center, enabling everyone to take this skill back to their own families and out into the community should the need arise.”
Jan with her sweetheart
Betty McRae and Charles Stuart

The Arizona Humane Society’s weekly TV show, “Pets on Parade,” will celebrate its 65th anniversary on Saturday, December 16 at 11:30 a.m. (after the Fiesta Bowl Parade concludes) on KTVK-3TV. “Pets on Parade” is the longest-running local television show in Arizona and debuted in December 1958, just one year after AHS was founded. For the last six-and-a-half decades, “Pets on Parade” has touched the lives of pet lovers in Arizona and has inspired community action by featuring adoptable pets, educating the community on animal welfare, providing resources for pet owners and advocating for the sick, injured and abused animals rescued by AHS. Each week, approximately 20,000 viewers of all ages tune in and it is estimated that approximately 35,000 dogs, cats and critters have found their forever homes thanks to the unique, in-kind exposure courtesy of 3TV.
“Not only is ‘Pets on Parade’ Arizona’s cutest show, it truly is a lifesaving platform that has allowed AHS to continue advocating for our community’s most vulnerable pets for 65 years and counting,” said Kelsey Dickerson, current host of Pets on Parade (pictured left with Dr. Steven Hansen, AHS President and CEO). “Thanks to this unique partnership, 3TV has helped tens of thousands of homeless pets find their forever homes while bringing joy and laughter to people throughout Arizona each week. We look forward to the next 65 years of adorable, lifesaving TV!”
The special anniversary episode will revisit the last 65 years and feature a lineup of
the beloved host of “Pets on Parade” for more than 40 years. Wright passed away
provided more than 7,000 volunteer hours to the pets she adored so much.
