HEART TO HEART

INNER-VIEW Bud and Sue Selig graciously welcomed me into their home. We chatted surrounded by their unique art collection as they shared their lives with me. Both Sue and Bud were born and raised in Milwaukee where they still have their primary residence. They first met in high school and a few years later met again and married.

BUD SELIG

Bud first came to Arizona in the early 1970’s for spring training with the Minnesota Brewers. He loved being here and by 1985, Scottsdale had become the Selig’s part-time home. Together, the Selig’s have received many significant honors for their philanthropy and corporate citizenship. Last December the Selig’s were honored for their philanthropy, by the Valley of the Sun JCC.

Now that Bud has retired from baseball; he is following his even greater passion, history. He has become a professor of History of Sport and Society and is teaching at both University of Wisconsin and Arizona State University.

Bud served as Commissioner of Baseball from 1998 to 2015 and currently serves as Commissioner Emeritus of Baseball. Bud’s passion for baseball was greatly influenced by his mother who took him, at age three to Borchert Field, where the minor league Milwaukee Brewers played. “Bud is credited with guiding the sport through a renaissance in many ways, most importantly by restructuring the game’ s economic system.” Among his many honors are the “Lombardi Award of Excellence.” Selig was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017, Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.

Sue Selig has created a beautiful home highlighting their contemporary and colorful art collection. Sue is an ardent art lover who devotes her time to enhance art and culture and is devoted to the Phoenix Art Museum. Their art collection is bold and exceptional. Each piece was purposefully chosen with their hearts. They deeply admire all the artists and their works, which embrace them in each room of their home. Bud’s favorite room is his office. He happily reclines in his favorite chair at the desk, positioned in full view of the TV screen (for sports viewing, of course) and phone to keep in touch with his vast network. As a couple they are eclectic leaders, always greeting people with smiles and open hearts. They truly have gifted Arizona with their best!

Let’s face it, an invitation to a party in the prestigious neighborhood of Encanto Park is rare. Few homes have sprawling backyards large enough to accommodate big parties. Although they are some of the most magnificent homes in the Valley, most yards are small. One beautiful home in particular can indeed accommodate and that’s precisely why Libby and Joel Cohen, together with Sharron Lewis opened the doors of the Cohen estate. I’ve had the opportunity to be in a lot of fantastic homes in the exclusive enclave and the Cohen’s place by Encanto Park standards is huge! Anyway, we all came together to celebrate the birthday of famed event planer extraordinaire George Abrams, who arrived with a mystery date. While we won’t tell you how many candles he blew out, we will tell you that the guest list was more than impressive. Brenda and Jim Howard were there, so was Charlene Berge-Blum, Nancy Teets, Ina and Murry Manaster, Priscilla and Michael Nicholas; who brought along their two delightful daughters Tanya and Michelle. Out on the lawn as quiet cords from soft guitars played; cocktails flowed and hor d’ oeuvres, courtesy of Vincent on Camelback, were passed in generous amounts. We ran into Sue Fletcher and Bob Stenhouse,

Bill Lykins, Amy Videan, Andrea and Jerry Lewkowitz and Paper Princesses Nancy Silver and Betsy Hendricks; who were chatting with Ginette and John Karabees. That’s just a sample of the name-dropping guest list that went on and on and on. Merry- makers finally made their respective way to a lavish buffet of epicurean delights that Vincent’s lead Catering Manager, Amy Fox, oversaw with polished perfection throughout the opulent evening. It was a beautiful night and perfect way to celebrate a fine gentleman. The good news is that no one in attendance had to write a check. A party just to have a party? Imagine that! People are talking about two very successful events that just took place, the Barrow Grand Ball and the Childhelp Drive the Dream Gala. Both were absolutely spectacular and are featured in this issue in all their respective splendor and glory. Both events raised a ton of money and both announced their numbers and bravo for them. However, in recent years the Phoenix Heart Ball, the Honor Ball and several other big-time galas have suspended this practice. I remember the much-adored and iconic socialite Pat Goldman once said at one of our countless lunches at L’amore how she wished organizations would stop talking about money. She went on to say that great things came from great amounts of money, but shouldn’t we rather talk about great things and not the money? I agree! We all know that vast amounts of money are needed to make an organization successful, but why not just talk about the fine inroads that are being made in research and effect rather than big bucks made. I’ve noticed in my 25 years at Trends, that it has become a competition of sorts with various charitable organizations in Phoenix. Remember, if you were raised right, your parents told you never to talk about money. I remember a childhood friend who loved to talk about money. He once asked me on the playground how big my parent’s home was and what kind of cars they drove. He eventually went to prison for armed robbery. You get the picture?

Leslie and Jeff Rich, Nancy Spetzler, George Abrams, this year’s chair Jamie Anderson and countless others reached out to the social community and gave the event their respective blessings. The National Kidney Foundation is lucky to have Ms. Schufeldt and everyone else who breathed new life into something that could have easily gone by the way side. Well done.

Dancing With The Stars Arizona just got a shot in the arm by their savvy new development director Ashleigh Schufeldt. We had stopped covering the event in recent years, because we simply didn’t recognize any of the dancers anymore … Yes we can say that! Now the event has been returned to all its glory of yesteryear.

BAD SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: Emails, phone calls and letters continue to flood our offices regarding a foreign couple that has effortlessly inserted themselves into the social world. Apparently they like to feed-off wealthy widows, widowers and lonely hearts. Their current bank roller is not their first by a long shot. You’ve been warned.

The trememdous exhibition of Violins of Hope finally made it to Phoenix. It is the brain child of Julee Landau Shahon, Rachel Hoffer, Alison Johnston, Dee Dee Vecchione and founders of the exhibition, Amon and Assaela Weinstein; who took tragedy and turned it into triumph. At a swank VIP reception and dinner; the group unveiled to Arizona and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, violins used in European concentration camps during World War II. The exhibition is a great reminder of the horrors of war and the tragedy of the Holocaust that can be turned into something of b rilliance. Bravo ladies!

INNER-VIEW Judi Scanlon Svendsen loves making a difference for people at both happy and often difficult times in their lives.

The reasons for an estate sale vary from person to person. It can be because of a move, redecorating, death, marriage, de-cluttering, remodeling, etc. Contrary to what many think Judi says, “Estate sales can be for happy reasons.” Judi’s personal philosophy is that life does not have to stop you. Life stops when you want it to! Judi’s background is in interior design and she had a shop for 11 years in Scottsdale Market Place called Griffin Antiques, Design and Estate Sales.

When designing the estate sale, she is careful to create an atmosphere of celebration and not dwell on any negative association with the event. She strongly believes her sales must be fun and she has a large following of people who attend her sales knowing they will be welcomed and treated well. As a matter of fact, she met her husband at one of her sales! Many of her clients have been celebrities, however she would never divulge their names. Anonymity is key.

She found that when people sell things, there is a greater benefit to the sellers if the pieces are seen in their original home. The items are perceived as having greater value when viewed before they are moved. Another consideration is that the owner has more control over pricing and how their pieces are handled.

She has a minimum size for her estate sales and a $35,000 estimate of the contents. She has a staff of 6-15 people depending on the needs of each individual sale. She has had as many as 20 security guards to protect the safety of the merchandise and more importantly the people attending the sale. Judi is extremely devoted to her family and friends and her new addition, a Mini-Berna-doodle.

Barry & Peggy Goldwater Foundation

The Barry & Peggy Goldwater Foundation is a nonprofit corporation qualified as a charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its mission is to preserve history by curating, digitizing, restoring and preserving photographs, slides and motion pictures that are at risk of deterioration, particularly those which document nascent Arizona, starting with more than 15,000 images and 25 miles of film by Arizona’s native son, former U.S. Senator and 1964 Presidential nominee, the late Barry M. Goldwater.

The Foundation intends to make the collection available for exhibitions, educational platforms and through an online virtual library. The Foundation’s founder and Executive Director, Alison Goldwater Ross, a former marketing executive, is the granddaughter of the Foundation’s namesake. She is among the third generation of family members to descend from the Arizona retail and political dynasty that originated with the establishment of the first Goldwater’s mercantile in La Paz, Arizona in 1862. A brisk Sunday afternoon in Scottsdale brought out some of the biggest movers and shakers in town. Western Spirit: Scottsdaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Museum of the West proved the perfect setting for the Goldwater family to debut a masterpiece of photographs taken by the late Barry Goldwater. Alison Goldwater and Kirsten Ross along with Robert Stieve of Arizona Highways fame all came together to celebrate their monumental undertaking. The three incredible people painstakingly catalogued and restored countless amounts of photographs taken by the Senator from the early part of the twentieth century until his death in 1998. The Goldwater children including Joanne, Barry Jr., Michael and Peggy all took turns reminiscing about their fine father and his love of Arizona. The exhibition is simply breathtaking. It was a brilliant afternoon!

PHOENIX SUNS CHARITIES JUMP BALL Talking Stick Resort is always a fun and playful venue for a great evening. Just a few weeks ago, the Phoenix Suns hosted their much-anticipated Jump Ball at the resort and brought out countless luminaries in the social and athletic circles. A sprawling silent auction and cocktail reception gave merrymakers the opportunity to mix and mingle with Suns players past and present. Once the lights dimmed and dinner chimes ran out, guests proceeded to a festive ballroom decorated in vibrant hues of festive colors that could wow even the most jaded party goer. Team Captains Penny and Robert Sarver, together with Joan and Jerry Colangelo, welcomed a sold-out crowd of philanthropists. For decades, Phoenix Suns Charities has continued to make a difference in the lives of so many and this evening proved just as triumphant. You should have been there!

Barrow Neurological Institute Expands With Innovative “Neuroplex” Building Barrow Neurological Institute will break ground this year on a new building on the St. Joseph’s campus. “This facility, known as the ’Neuroplex,’ will change the environment in which our team works, create a portal for destination patients and expand our space for research,” notes Dr. Michael Lawton, President and CEO, Barrow Neurological Institute. Barrow is known for accepting challenges, rejecting norms and pushing boundaries when it comes to neuroscience treatment, research and training. Barrow is recognized annually as a top neuroscience center in the country by US News & World Report. Dr. Nader Sanai is the Francis and DIonne Najafi Chair for Neurosurgical Oncology at Barrow Neurological Institude. Fresh Start Women’s Foundation was founded by two sisters, Pat Petznick and Beverly Stewart, who envisioned a community where women, every woman, reaches her full potential. For 16 years Fresh Start has been providing women with career training, development workshops, family law support, computer training and so much more.

What should the community know about Fresh Start? Fresh Start is not only helping women succeed, but also helps entire families succeed! So many of the women we see are the heads of their household, from every walk of life; and we know, to have a healthy family, you need a healthy mom.

Who can benefit from services provided by Fresh Start? Fresh Start serves women from all walks of life and we have seen that every woman can be a Fresh Start woman. Fresh Start is a landing pad for women, so they do not have to go back to a crisis situation.

How many years have you been supporting the organization? After returning to Phoenix fifteen years ago, Fresh Start was the FIRST organization I re-engaged with, joining the Auxiliary Board, and today serving on the Board of Directors and having the honor of chairing the Gala. I am reminded of the “why” every time I meet the women we serve and hear their amazing stories of resilience and courage.

A regal crowd gathered at Clayton on the Park on the Scottsdale Mall for an exclusive preview of Violins of Hope. The worldrenowned presentation pays tribute to the musical instruments used in concentration camps during the Holocaust. The founders of the traveling museum, Assaela and Amnon Weinstein, were on hand along with their son Avshi to toast this magnificent exhibition and evening. Chairs Julee Landau Shahon and Rachel Hoffer welcomed all in attendance. Alison Johnston and Dee Dee Vecchione were also instrumental in raising awareness for the exhibition and they were there too. Cocktails flowed and opulent hor dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; oeuvres were passed prior to dinner, as the rain pelted the large glass window looking out on the grassy mall. Member of the Family by Dianne Lake The 1960s was a strange time in American History. You either conformed and led a normal life or you dropped out, just like Timothy Leary instructed. For Dianne Lake and her family, the latter occurred. In 1967 her parents began to move away from conventional society. And In 1968; they decided to let their daughter, age 14, move out and join a cult. Unfortunately for Ms. Lake, she decided to join the Manson Family. Throughout the next year; Dianne Lake, along with countless youngsters that drop in and out of the cult-like atmosphere, realized that this is not your ordinary commune. By early 1969; the family leader, a charismatic and very short Charles Manson, begins to condition his “family,” to various and often violent tactics. It starts with break-ins in affluent suburbs, where “family members” rearrange furniture and items leaving the homes in the dead-of-night. Homeowners awake confused and frightened. Charles Manson deems these missions “Creepy Crawls.” But this is just the tip of the iceberg. By the late summer of that same year, 8 innocent people have been brutally slaughtered. They include 8-month pregnant actress Sharon Tate and her house guests, which included coffee heiress Abigail Folger and world-famous stylist Jay Sebring. Charles Manson and his derelict family become frightfully famous. The book is a fascinating account of a young hippie who sits at the feet of a man and his followers, all in awe of the madness surrounding them. Dianne Lake’s account of this time is fascinating and frightening. On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the crimes, this piece is a great read.
