Hello again,

Here we are in spring. The May/June issue of Trend is always a bit of a balancing act. Yes, we want to encourage you all to get out and about, whether that’s heading down to the beach, having a night out, lunch with friends, or roaming the countryside in romantic florals, but we’re all too aware that the heavens could open and it’ll rain for a fortnight. Probably just when the schools take a break or you have house guests if past experience is anything to go by.

Of course, we could be entirely practical and theme our fashion shoot round dresses with matching padded jackets, umbrellas and wellies and write features on what to do with the kids on a wet weekend, but we’re nothing if not optimistic. Maybe this will be the start of a long, hot summer? After all, there was one back in 1976, so we must be due another one soon!

Still, it doesn’t really matter what the weather’s doing, you’ll find a host of ideas on how to make this spring more enjoyable. As well as our fashion and beauty features, you can discover Qigong, local charities, create a scented garden, host a BBQ, find out about life drawing workshops, rejuvenate your looks, or treat yourself with a Trend event or maybe even win a competition – perhaps a night at the theatre or a hotel stay in Edinburgh.

It doesn’t really matter what the weather’s doing because the city and shire always offers lots to do and we’re here to help you make the most of it!

Tina Faulkner Elders introduces this gentle form of mindful movement which is combined with breathwork to calm the mind and regulate the nervous system…

Qigong is about healthy movement which nourishes the organs, promotes good balance and strengthens core muscles. It is also a part of Traditional Chinese medicine and so involves stimulation of acupressure points. It’s suitable for all ages and abilities, so everyone can benefit from the practice.

The practice of Qigong can be traced back over 2000 years in China, though it has evolved considerably during that time. It can be thought of as a form of moving meditation, with slow-flowing movements and rhythmic breathing which help create a calm state of mind.

My father, Gordon Faulkner taught Kungfu, so I started learning when I was seven, later taking up Tai Chi, Qigong and meditation with my father and from visiting instructors that would stay in our home. I studied Qigong at the Beijing Sports University and also studied Tai Chi and meditation with the famous Grandmaster Shi Ming. I’m a registered Senior Instructor, a 16th

generation lineage holder of Wudang Internal Arts and serve as a board member and technical panel advisor for Tai Chi Internal Arts.

A class will generally start with a gentle warm up and some breathwork to relax the body and bring calm and focus. From there a Qigong movement will be explored and practised. The level of this exploration depends on the class, from looking at an individual move to feel the benefits to studying whole routines and the theory behind the movements. There is no floor work and no specialist equipment is needed.

Qigong is brilliant whether you’re 8 or 98! We have a schools programme called Calm Space for Me which was commissioned by Aberdeen City Council Education department. It is a video program that can be accessed in the classroom for both children and teaching staff to positively engage with themselves in a non-competitive way, building resilience and inner calm. The feedback has been very positive with one teacher saying they find it brings, ‘peace, calm and compassion to the classroom’. The potential for long term positive effects are profound and have sparked a

collaboration with Aberdeen University which is undertaking a research project to explore how they are used and the impacts for pupils and teachers.

As well as my classes and workshops throughout the shire, I’ve taught Qigong at the Aberdeen Maggie’s since it opened in 2013. It’s such a special place. Centre head, Vera Schroeter, commented, ‘Tina’s Qigong classes are part of our wider programme of support for people with cancer and those who love them. Many of those who visit the centre find Qigong incredibly helpful both for their physical and mental wellbeing; as an opportunity for breathing and gentle movement, and as a way of taking time for themselves amidst the chaos and busyness of their treatment or caring role. The Qigong classes are also a space for connection with others who might understand how you are feeling, and something practical that people can do to improve their wellbeing in a time when there is little control. It's lovely to see so many people making use of Qigong as a tool to help them relax, move and connect.’

A sweep of bronzer can be a great shortcut to achieving healthy-looking glowing skin. A wellchosen bronzer warms the complexion, making you look more vibrant instantly. There are a wide selection of shades and formulations, so spend some time finding the one that makes you less pale and more interesting. We asked makeup artist Julia Stronach for her advice…

‘The most important thing when using a bronzer to use the correct shade for your skin tone. Quite often bronzers can look too orange, or be too muddy or greyish. I find that for fairer skin tones, the Gucci shade 01 is extremely flattering, with some lovely blush hues that compliment lighter skin,’ Julia commented. ‘For medium or darker skin tones, Gucci’s shade 03 packs that beautiful golden punch we all seek, again without looking too warm.

‘The second important aspect to consider is application technique. When carrying out personal makeup lessons, I often discover clients use too coarse a brush, or one that’s simply too big to give the correct precision.  It’s imperative that you use a super soft brush when working with bronzer to achieve an even, nicely diffused distribution of product. If the brush is too coarse then it can look patchy, or too dark. I always use a contour angle brush for defining cheekbones as the product applies so smoothly.

‘When applying bronzer, start from the top of the ear, and use super soft pressure. Another common error is when we press too hard. Go gentle to begin, and then use more pressure if needs be. Fade out the pressure the further down the cheekbone you come. It

can also be useful to suck in your cheeks when applying bronzer to show you exactly where you need to be placing it.’

There are formulations, shades and price points to suit every makeup bag, so a whizz round a beauty department trying a few things can be a worthwhile investment, especially if some of the staff can demonstrate the best technique for your face shape.

Charlotte Tilbury offers a dual bronzer and highlighter palette called Filmstar Bronze and Glow which helps your skin reflect like and creates a natural-looking glow.

Cream bronzers like REFY’s version can give a natural looking glow and glide on easily. A decent bronzer needn’t always be expensive. L’Oreal’s Back to Bronze Matte Bronzing Powder and NYX Professional makeup Matte Bronzer, in five shades, are both powder formulas that you’ll find for under a tenner.

Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Glow Fusion Powder is more of a setting powder, but if you choose a shade that works, it’s got great staying power and luminosity, providing a 3D effect.

Eat on the Green to close in September

One of the shire’s best loved restaurants, Eat on the Green, has announced it will officially close its doors on Saturday 28 th  September 2024. Men Mind

Men often find it more difficult to discuss their mental health than women do, yet around 77% of men will be faced with depression, stress or anxiety at some point in their lives. That’s why Men in Mind was formed, as facilitator Andy Joss explained, ‘Men still tend to wear masks to cover up what is really going on. Women do tend to speak more to their friends, family and work colleagues. They have no issue speaking about their kids, husbands, jobs and also the emotions surrounding that. Why is this any different for men? We are trying to break through this at Men in Mind.

‘Men are almost three times as likely to commit suicide as women and we know that half of all men who kill themselves don’t exhibit previous signs of mental illness. In fact, it was the suicide of a neighbour that provided part of the impetus for the founding of Men in Mind. He had no history of mental health problems. He just went missing one day, then was discovered the next, having

taken his own life. He was just 31 and left a wife and a three-year-old daughter.

‘If an attendee tells us that what we’re doing makes a difference to their mental health, then we’ve reached our goal. We just want to help. We don’t believe people should have to wait to seek help for their mental health. As a peer-to-peer support group, we can’t solve all issues, we know that, but talking really can help people. So if people are willing to talk we are more than happy to listen.

‘Men in Mind is open to all men over the age of 18, from anywhere. There’s been a huge range so far. There’s no membership required, no joining process, you just turn up and you can come to one meeting or come every week, we’re here when we’re needed.

We’re fortunate to have the support of the Cove Rangers Community Foundation, who allow us to hold our meetings each Thursday evening at

Balmoral Stadium. We start at 6.30pm sharp.

Just turn up, have a brew and a biscuit. There’s no pressure to talk about how you’re feeling, you can just listen to others until you feel comfortable and ready to open up. It’s a safe space, with no need to let us know you’re coming, or fill in any forms.

We must be due a long hot summer, surely? Even if we don’t get months of glorious sunshine, there’s bound to be a few days when we can head to the garden, fire up the BBQ and enjoy the enticing smell of steaks, sausages and something involving halloumi for the vegetarians.

Despite cooking over a flame being one of the most difficult cooking methods to get right, the man of the house will preside over the barbecue even if his

culinary experience starts and ends with picking up a takeaway. It’s just a rule.

Anyway, we’ve rounded up a few tips to help you avoid cremating your culinary creations.

If you’re choosing a new BBQ, then you should start by working out how many people you typically need to feed in one go. If there’s a crowd and you’re cooking half a dozen sausages a time, this can be

a little frustrating for your guests. If you want a traditional smoky flavour, your best bet is a lumpwood charcoal BBQ, though this will take longer to heat up, so make sure to get things going a couple of hours before your guests arrive. You can add some pre-soaked aromatic wood chips to your fuel to add more depth of flavour. However, adding lighter fluid to get things moving is always a very bad idea, just plan ahead and be patient.

Gas BBQs are good for a crowd, quicker and sometimes easier to clean, though you do need to keep safety in mind and make sure you have enough gas in your bottle. Electric BBQs are relatively new, but as with gas, you don’t really get the smokiness that’s essential to a real BBQ

experience. They do, however, have the advantage of being temperature controlled, which takes the guesswork out of cooking and perhaps reduces the chance of serving your guests with undercooked or overcooked burgers.

Check what people would prefer to eat in advance. There’s little point serving fish, for example, if people just want burgers. This also gives you the chance to curb your tendency to over-cater so you don’t spend the next fortnight eating leftovers. Many butchers like JK Fine Foods or Chattan Quality Meats offer special BBQ packs which saves time and offers variety.

Invest in some decent sauces or marinades or make your own. Anything that adds flavour is a bonus when you’re running the risk of carbonising everything you cook.

Keep a separate spot on your grill, or ideally have a second grill, for vegetarian and vegan options. This section should also have its own tools and tongs. Try corn on the cob, halloumi and veg kebabs and veggie or plant-based burgers.

Give some thought to how people will eat, as well as what. Flatbreads and rolls are great because they make it easy to handle and eat hot food and reduce the chances of getting ketchup on your favourite shirt.

Keep salads and side dishes simple but flavourful. That's about two-thirds of what people eat at a BBQ anyway. Grazing boards let everyone choose their favourites and look attractive.

Potato salad, pasta salad and chopped salads like tabbouleh work well because they are pre-cut and easy to scoop up with a fork even if you’re using disposable plates and standing because there are not enough tables and chairs.

A cooler’s a great addition to your outdoor entertaining set up. Keep it simple with a plastic storage box or tin bath filled with ice, or you could invest in an electric cooler if you entertain a lot.

All you need now is a quick prayer to the weather gods.

Bakers raise some dough for ARI Plastics and Burns Unit

Seven of the north-east’s best bakers took part in The Big Booby Bakesale at Parx Café on Rubislaw Terrace to raise funds for ARI’s Plastics and Burns Unit. The bakesale was organised by Mechelle Clark, the former owner of Melt, who was diagnosed with breast cancer requiring complex mastectomy reconstructive surgery at the unit.

Bandit Bakery, Sourcloud Bakes, Feingeback, The Crusty Slice, plus The Highlanders Bakehouse in Crathie and The Culinary Kiwi Bird in Insch and Parx Café all supported the sale by providing free baked goods.

Artist Rebecca Westguard discusses her work and her classes in life drawing, painting and sculpting…

I think I inherited my creative thinking from my family. My rather eccentric paternal grandmother influenced me very much with her drawing and painting and my maternal Great Grandfather practised printmaking/painting.

I live in Johnshaven, where I’ve lived since the age of nine. It’s a magical place - a beautiful historical village and great community. Everyone looks after each other. Now we’re raising our own family here. Having four small children keeps me on my toes, particularly when they decide to add their own creative touches to my sketches. Their creativity provides little windows into their imagination.

I trained as a painter at Gray’s School of Art and was fortunate to have very good lecturers at a time when life drawing was a significant part of course delivery. Since then I’ve combined my own practice with lecturing and managing creative programmes.

I run In the Flesh studios in portraiture, life study, still life as well as outside on location. There are courses in Aberdeen and in Johnshaven and all the materials are provided. My courses are suitable for everyone from complete beginners to advanced artists. It’s about close observation, drawing what’s right in front of you.

Working from life builds confidence and individuality in creativity. It develops a personal signature in your work that becomes unique to you. All sorts of people come to my courses, from people wanting to build a portfolio for art school, those who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in years to trained artists. In the Flesh offers a very inclusive and supportive creative environment with the encouragement to develop and stretch yourself as an artist. I’m thankful to be able to work with truly wonderful people, exercise my brain and analyse the development of several drawing, painting, and sculptures at one time.

Ive learnt so much teaching and studying how people creatively progress. My hope is to continue to grow as an artist and create bodies of work in

the years ahead that are meaningful. I’m always so impressed by the pace of progress demonstrated during the In the Flesh workshops, especially over a weekend or four day course. The compositions are on another level and, in turn, the learning experience is unique.

My own work is inspired by artists of yesteryear: the Renaissance and Lucian Freud in particular. I'm fascinated with the human form and the complexities found on the skin - something I will study for a life time. I’ll draw a compositional sketch from the life model, then revisit the pose to tweak it. After that, I'm all in for the final work. I draw on canvas or handmade papers. I draw into wax, I enjoy ink studies and when painting use oil or gouache.

My hope is to continue to grow as an artist and create bodies of work in the years ahead that

are meaningful. I’ll continue to develop more course opportunities and share my skills. I have a philanthropic approach and run a free twilight course for Higher Education students and new graduates and I support portfolio builders. I would love to see this approach externally supported. Helping people reach their full potential is invaluable. I also engage our local children in creativity when I can: after a Johnshaven workshop, the studio doors are sometimes open for children to draw at an easel or get their hands on a block of clay. It' great to see them get creative.

Garden designer Kirsty McLean sniffs out the best plants for a scent-sational garden…

The waft of scent coming from a plant as you brush past can bring back memories and emotions of childhood, holidays or loved ones. Scented plants can be therapeutic, inducing feelings of pleasure, reducing stress, promoting relaxation and even improving sleep.

Sun and warmth bring out the scent in plants more, but we have many plants that grow in the north-east of Scotland that smell wonderful throughout the seasons, if you know what to look for.

In summer the herbaceous border is starting to push up with perennials of such variety, colour and scent, there are too many to name! Climbers too are coming into their own, such as Jasminum Officinale (Summer Jasmine) or if you have very sheltered spot against a wall or fence, try Trachelospermum Jasminoides (Star Jasmine) which is semi-evergreen, both are highly scented.

Later in the season, as we move into autumn, we have honeysuckles such as Lonicera japonica Serotina, Belgica or Halliana and climbing roses such as Rosa New Dawn, The Generous Gardener, or the thornless climber Zepherine Drouhin all of which have strong and individual scents and often flower right through to the first frosts.

Just imagine sitting under an arbour surrounded by lanterns and evening scented blooms filling up your senses on a warm summer evening. There are plenty of nightscented plants available. Try Japanese wisteria if you have a very sunny wall or fence. Night Phlox and Trachelospermum Jasminoides, both need shelter as they are tender, evening scented Stocks, Dianthus, Hesperis matronalis (Sweet Rocket), Honeysuckles and many more pour out their scent as the sun sets.

Even the depths of winter bring the promise of scented blooms. In January, Sarcococca confusa (Sweet Box) has the most wonderful fragrance. Such a treasure for any space

because of its compact nature and perfect to grow in a pot. Mahonias offer masses of sweetly, scented yellow flowers that cheer up the back of any border and start flowering around the end of Autumn often until the following March.

Lonicera x purpusii, ‘Winter Beauty’ (winter flowering honeysuckle) is covered in beautifully delicate and intensely fragrant creamy-white flowers in February, while Viburnum Tinus ‘Eve Price’ flowers from December to April. It has the sweetest scent coming from blush-pink buds in clusters.

As we move into spring, Hamamelis Mollis (witch hazel) produces spidery blossoms with a citrusy scent. Pieris japonica, Forest Flame & Flaming Silver are dripping with the most amazing panicles of hundreds of creamy scented, bell-shaped cream flowers and copper-coloured new leaf.

Snowdrops such as S Arnott, Atkinisii and James Blackhouse have the scent of honey and are quickly followed by Daffodils such as ‘Peach Cobbler’, ‘Jonquilla Peublo’ or Narcissus ‘Yellow Cheerfulness’. Osmanthus burkwoodii with its glossy evergreen leaf and abundance of fragrant white flowers. It’s a versatile and forgiving plant, growing in most conditions in both sun and partial shade. Daphne Retusa has pale pink clusters of deeply scented blooms that remain until end of May only to return later in the summer for a short burst, followed by red berries.

Late spring brings the heady-scented lilac (Sryinga vulgaris) and laburnum trees quickly followed by Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’, with its delicately coloured, white flower spikes and beautiful ‘orange-blossom’ fragrance. For smaller gardens there is a compact version called Philadelphus ‘Manteau d’Hermine’ and if you want a compact flowering Lilac, look no further than Syringa meyeri ‘Palibin’

How lucky are we to have so much to choose from and all available here in our local garden centres or at the click of a button!

Events and Media Officer, Stephanie Walls, shares the work of this supportive local charity which helps children and young adults, including those with additional support needs, through the power of music and theatre…

‘Music 4 U is a small charity has delivered integrated music and theatre workshops for children and young people aged 5 to 25 since 2005.

Many of the young people we support face disadvantages including disabilities, learning difficulties, neuro-divergence and socioeconomic challenges, but they all possess a talent and passion for performing arts,’ Stephanie explained.

‘In our inclusive and integrated workshops, young people work side by

side to learn about music, performance and social skills which lead to lasting friendships with those from a variety of different backgrounds. Music and dance bring people together and we’re working collectively towards a future full of acceptance, understanding and kindness.

‘We support over 80 young people. We offer an array of performing arts classes plus instrument tuition for drums, piano and guitar. We have given over 500 performances. We often fundraise during these events with raffles and games.

‘Quite simply, Music 4 U changes the lives of young people and their families through inclusive performing arts classes, enabling them

to experience a tailored learning experience in a supportive and inspiring environment. Our students lead enriched lives, with increased employability, empathy, and quality of life. We provide truly life affirming opportunities for these young people who may otherwise never find their footing in the wider world.

‘We’re always looking for generous businesses and individuals to help us reach our funding goals. Corporate sponsorship, volunteering at an event or fundraising on our behalf by taking on an exciting sporting challenge etc. - every little helps!’

Nashville Southern Comfort

If you fancy a break that’s all about laid-back vibes, great music, double denim and way, way too much food, then Nashville’s for you...

The weather is pretty mild, making it a good, year-round destination. Most of the rain falls in spring, snow is rare in winter and summer’s festival season averages a humid 32oC, while autumn is a procession of warm days, cooler evenings and riotous colours as the leaves change hue.

Nashville’s all about music. Head down to Broadway or Printer’s Alley and there’s hundreds of jazz, country and blues bars lining the streets, as well as big name performers at the Ryman Auditorium and local stadiums. Just grab a beer and follow your ears.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum has a fascinating collection showcasing the rise of country and folk music from the 19th century to the present day. The Taylor Swift Education Centre may prove a hit with younger family members. There are song-writing workshops, videos and interactive exhibits, including recording booths in case you’re suddenly inspired to lay down some demos.

Like much of the south, Tennessee excels in comfort food and artery-clogging portions, finding a way to add butter, fat and spice to almost everything. The city’s a delight for carnivores with everything from meatloaf, brisket and smoky barbecue ribs to fried chicken and catfish. The city’s signature dishes include chicken coated in cayenne paste and fried and deadly Goo Goo Clusters, bite-size chocolates containing caramel, marshmallow, nougat and peanuts. Another Broken Egg Café might your best bet if you want to reintroduce greenery into your diet.

If music or gluttony’s not your thing, there are some fabulous experiences and places to explore.

Why not spend a day or two at a Dude Ranch? You can saddle up even if you’ve

never ridden before, then live out your cowboy fantasies. The French Broad Outpost Ranch lies in the Cherokee National Forest and is part of an allinclusive resort where you can also hike and go white water rafting. If you head to the Sequatchie Valley’s somewhat literally-named A Tennessee Dude and Guest Ranch, you’re assigned your own horse when you check in and they offer lessons if you need a hand with your horsemanship. They even offer week and fortnight long horsecamps for kids.

As you’d expect from the location, Nashville and the surrounding area’s historic sites are often difficult to reconcile with modern thinking. You can visit the Belle Meade Plantation, a Greek Revival Mansion that was home to the Harding family, one of Nashville’s largest slaveholders. Guides in period costume share the contrasts between the lives of the family and their pampered racehorses and the slaves who worked the land.

You’ll also find Franklin, site of one of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles, around half an hour away. The Carter family house became the Federal Army’s battle HQ, while the Carnton Plantation acted as a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers. The guides are excellent, but it’s difficult to separate history from current day politics.

If you prefer your history to be ancient, then you’ll find the slightly surreal full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, complete with a 42 foot high statue of Athena, of interest. It’s now an art gallery and museum. The park also has walking trails, landscaped gardens, a lake, a historic steam locomotive, a Korean War fighter jet and some cannons.

As we said, Nashville offers something for everyone.

Trend’s popular Fashion Lunches kicked off this year at Malmaison in March. The ladies were treated to a lovely lunch with a glass of Prosecco on arrival. Trend’s annual Afternoon Tea Garden Party was held at The Marcliffe Hotel and Spa. The guests were dressed to impress as they enjoyed a glass of fizz on arrival and the Marcliffe’s wonderful full Afternoon Tea. Rose and Lauren Reid, the mother and daughter team behind LoLo+Co discuss working with each other and the boutique’s recent move to Union Street…

‘Although I studied law and management, I found it wasn’t my true passion. I’ve always loved fashion and I found the perfect partner by launching the boutique with my mum,’ explained Lauren. ‘We felt that the city and shire was missing something, so we took the leap and decided to launch LoLo+Co to try and fill the gap. Everyone in the family has always called me LoLo, so choosing a name for the boutique was simple!’

‘We always say, “If you never try, you’ll never know” and then LoLo+Co was born!’ added mum Rose.

‘I’d say our tastes in clothes are similar, but we wear things in different ways. That works well when we’re choosing which brands and clothing to stock each season. We have customers of all ages, and we love to share styles we have in the shop and show off how you can wear certain products differently. We’re also lucky to be great friends as well as a mother and daughter. It makes working together easy.’

‘We choose the stock for each season together on our seasonal buying trips. From a day to day perspective Lolo runs the shop while I keep everyone up to date with the admin, but since we are such a small family run business with a

small team we all chip in,’ Rose continued. ‘I’d describe LoLo+Co as offering on trend styles that are both casual and dressy. We have brought in brands such as French Connection, GANT and Ted Baker who are already well known in the fashion industry. We also wanted to introduce brands that are new to the city such as Penny Black, SAND Copenhagen and our Italian brands. Now we’ve moved to bigger premises on Union Street, we’ve been able to bring some fabulous brands to the city and hope to add to this in our new home!’

‘Moving to 226 Union Street has been a long time coming and a labour of love,’ said Lauren, ‘While we loved being at Netherkirkgate and it was a good starting point for us, we’re thrilled at being in the hustle and bustle of Union Street. We have been very overwhelmed with the positive response to our move it means so much to us that the customers are just as excited as we are.

‘As a small team, we love connecting with our customers, offering that unique shopping experience that’s been missing from the city for so long. There’s a great community of independent shops here and we hope to bring back the buzz to shopping in the city.’
