The Wolwedans Foundation
GRADUATES
2018
HOSPITALITY ASSOCIATION OF NAMIBIA (HAN) O n 18 August 2018, The Wolwedans Foundation graduated 22 new employable Namibians to the industry in Commercial Cookery and Food and Beverage Services NQF Level 3.
Since the Wolwedans Foundations inception in 2010, the organisation has graduated over 250 young people and continues to build on its commitment to illustrate excellence in Namibian hospitality, travel, tourism and gastronomy. As part of its commitment to community upliftment and one of its core pillars*, the organisation is dedicated to its prescribed commitment to building the nations human capital: People matter; it is the right of every person to have their basic needs met and enhancing the well-being of communities is a fundamental obligation of all. The Wolwedans Foundation supports activities that enhance the well being of communities they belong to or interact with. The Wolwedans Foundation, Chairperson: Mr. Stephan Bruckner At Wolwedans we train twice the number of trainees that could be required for our own use and strive to have the remainder absorbed by the industry, in an aim to support and give back to our partners and fellow industry members. Where possible its also encouraged that our trainees explore the industry and its members for practicals / internships and on-the-job training opportunities where they exist across the country. One of our graduates, young Mr. Heinz Bank was awarded 3rd place and prize in the Namibian National Junior Chef’s competition hosted by the Namibian Chefs Association in 2018. The award paid homage to the standard of education offered by the schools, specifically the Namibian Institute of Culinary Education (Windhoek). This school has now committed itself to being a section 21 company in mid 2018, hence the name: 21 NICE (which you will see on their Wolwedans participation certificates). It now boasts a training restaurant, and organic garden, offering homemade lunches to the public as part of the trainees’ curriculum from 12 3pm weekdays. Executive Chef Kvetoslav Kabat supervises the kitchen, quality assurance and facilitation, supported by Chef Elias Wilhelm. The head of training at 21NICE, Mr. Philip Reyher explains: ‘Our set up is unique and our trainees are treated as young professionals, however we still make time to make them feel nurtured, understood and appreciated. This is an attitude that shows in their work ethic, their dedication to attendance
and the quality of food they prepare on a daily basis, both for the training restaurant and for the Waldorf School’s cafeteria kitchen where meals are also prepared daily for the children of the school in Avis, Windhoek by our trainees. We are very proud of them!’ Our qualifications are separated into 2 parts: The Level 2 program (10 months) is completed and assessed before the start of the 18 month Level 3 program. Trainees from the Wolwedans Desert Academy are particularly lucky in that they are prepared into understanding the industry more intimately by being exposed to the operations of the Wolwedans Collection of Camps & Lodges in the NamibRand Nature Reserve and are regularly introduced to guests as part of their training in order to receive on the job mentoring and hands on experience. We call this approach, the ‘Living Classroom’ approach and it’s become a steadfast ethos for which the Foundations graduates have become well known. Yet, another way in which the Foundation hopes to make sure its trainees and graduates are employ-ready before graduation at the end of the 18-month course (Level 3). Ten of our graduates are now permanently employed through either 21NICE or the Wolwedans Collection, however The Wolwedans Foundation strives to make suitably qualified graduates available to the whole Namibian Tourism industry across Namibia. The remaining graduates continue to seek and find employment throughout the country, with 2 of them currently working in the Zambezi region. The graduation ceremony took place in Windhoek and was attended by the Social Security Commission as well as the National Training Authority representatives. The NBC broadcasted event presented the graduates to the country and reiterated our message of vocational training, as was communicated by the Executive Officer of the SSC, Mrs. Milka Mungunda in saying: ‘For those of us who find formal academic education to be a stifling barrier in the flooded job market, its refreshing to know that vocational training still provides an edge and great opportunities for our most thriving industry – hospitality, travel and tourism in Namibia.’ Our trainees are developed through the Living Classroom approach and are guided by our Wolwedans Compass of values, which summarises that: Fair Means Balanced, Honest Means Sincere, Positive Means Constructive and Creative Means Innovative.
We are proud to introduce you to the Class of 2018: THE NAMIBIAN INSTITUTE OF CULINARY EDUCATION | 21NICE

Vocational Education & Training: A Message from HAN: The Hospitality Association of Namibia recently sent out a mailer to all members re-iterating the importance of vocational training in our industry. The lack of balance between academic and vocational training is apparent to all and there is a serious shortage of qualified vocational education trainers. The negative attitude towards VET as an inferior qualification tool persists and the country needs a serious paradigm shift. There is a serious need for all sectors, including tourism employers to buy into the apprentice program and offer internships to the youth to ensure their employability. For us in tourism, there are numerous options, - Global Apprentice Network was established last year, - Silver Spoon Hospitality Academy offers apprentice programs, and training centers such as NICE and NUST Hotel School also seek placements of trainees regularly, - and it is up to industry to absorb these trainees and make them job-ready. Besides a lack of industry participation, there are challenges facing the growth of VET in Namibia, which include inadequate access, funding, program relevance and the lack of quality trainers in some instances. Vocational training and the acquisition of sills in general, will help to grow our industry, develop the nation and achieve Vision 2030’s industrialization plan. Extracted from the HAN members circular, 24 September 2018 Ms Gitta Paetzold (CEO: HAN)
