SOU TH AMERICA

4

The culturally diverse continent of South America offers a unique experience for any traveller. From the Amazonian Rainforest to the glaciers of Patagonia, South America is home to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. Musical delights are plenty with each country known for their own rhythm and sound. Tango in Argentina or Samba in Brazil, there will be many opportunities to dance the night away.

W hen to go Weather conditions and the general climate vary tremendously as you travel across the continent, and so working out when to visit South America can be challenging to say the least... Broadly speaking, most of South America is in the southern hemisphere, so their winter is the UK summer, and viceversa. However, in practice much of South America (including areas north of the Equator) has a tropical climate, where the difference between the rainy and dry seasons is much more important. JAN

It is important to familiarise yourself with the different currencies you will need, as it is best to use the local currency of each country. Paying by credit card is an obvious choice for big ticket items such as flights, accommodation or car hire. In all situations, take care with your funds and if you are paying with your credit card – always keep it in sight during the payment process. From a security perspective we suggest you notify your bank prior to departure that you will be using your card overseas. TOP PLACES TO VISIT

BUENOS AIRES This sophisticated Argentine jewel is the most European of the South American capitals. Buenos Aires is often referred to as “The Paris of South America,” but it’s so much more than that. The city features characteristics of great global cities like Paris, Vienna, Rome, Barcelona, Havana, San Juan, Miami and others. But Buenos Aires stands alone, a sprawling metropolis of more than 12 million people, located well below the equator (closer to Antarctica, in fact) in the upper-eastern quadrant of Argentina. Most of the city’s goods and services remain a tremendous bargain for visitors from Europe or North America. Compared to other worldclass cities, a trip to Buenos Aires is a bargain, and once you visit, you’ll likely want to return.

CARTAGENA You’re in for a big treat if you’ve booked a cruise with Cartagena on the itinerary, as this lovely old town on Colombia’s Caribbean coast is quite deservedly the country’s most popular tourist destination. Cartagena is a modern seaport and commercial centre that still retains much of its original Spanish colonial architecture. There, you’ll find everything a cruise passenger’s heart could desire: a fascinating history embedded in ancient forts, churches and palaces; a walled town filled with exquisite 16th and 17th-century Spanish colonial architecture; soft beaches; world-class snorkelling and scuba diving reefs; delightful restaurants; and enough shops to capture your interest without the place feeling like one gigantic mall. GALAPAGOS Be you a bucket-lister or wildlife buff, the idea of the Galapagos pulses with animal magnetism. A visit to the Ecuadorian islands is a science fiction adventure, visit a prehistoric land of volcanic eruptions, alien cactus trees, swimming iguanas, flightless birds and tortoises of lumbering immensity. A cruise, which lets visitors efficiently trace remarkable evolutionary variations from island to island, is the most immersive way to see the whole Galapagos destination in a 3 to 14 night stretch. There are 17 cruise ports in the Galapagos, each offering unique ways to experience these magical islands. GUAYAQUIL Guayaquil Port is located on the Guayas River; it is 44 miles away from the Gulf of Guayaquil located on the Pacific Coast of Ecuador. It is Ecuador’s largest city and the capital of the province of Guayas. Guayaquil is considered to be the most populous island, there are more than 4.5 million people living in the metropolitan area. The La Bahia is the place to buy everything you need. Historic sites whilst you visit include the Palacio Municipal which is the most important building in the country. For water adventure, day trip the Salinas, surf, swim, fish, or even whale watch from June to September. LIMA With a population of almost 8 million, Peru’s capital has been a city of fusion from the time the first adobe bricks were laid on the original two-story government palace - a Spanish stronghold in the land of the Incas and far older cultures. Lima is a jumble of Renaissance architecture, pre-Hispanic ruins and museums filled with pre-Columbian artefacts that predate the Incas. Limeans themselves represent a complex mix of ethnic heritage. Ancient Indian cultures from the northern coast and the Andes, Spanish conquerors, and a large Chinese population that grew following immigration from China. Peru’s fascinating capital features many fine landmarks, not least of which is the Plaza de Armas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 6

IN SOU TH AMERICA

MONTEVIDEO Montevideo, at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Rio de la Plata, is an intriguing mix of old and new. Founded by the Spanish in 1720, the heart of Uruguay’s capital is home to some fine colonial architecture with beautiful 19th century houses and squares. Along the Rambla, the waterfront drive that stretches for 12 miles, you’ll discover sun-kissed beaches and sculpturefilled parks. Montevideo is the perfect “kick back and relax” respite from glitzier ports on South American itineraries. It may be sleepier and less cosmopolitan than metropolises in Argentina and Brazil, but Montevideo offers a broad range of possibilities for the day-tripper: monuments, restaurants, gorgeous beaches and a burgeoning arts and culture movement. PUERTO MONTT Puerto Montt, tucked in a corner along the side of a mountain, will make you feel like you have reached a far corner of Bavaria. Puerto Montt was populated by German immigrants who brought with them their architecture, customs and culture. Chile’s gateway to its spectacular lake district has a distinctly alpine feel about it. From here, you’ve the chance to take in the best views of the region’s waterfalls, rivers and lakes, as well as Mt. Osorno with its snowcapped peak. Other highlights include the emerald green waters of Lake Todos Los Santos, more commonly known as Lake Esmeralda and described by Theodore Roosevelt as the most beautiful lake he had ever seen. RIO DE JANEIRO In almost every poll about “favourite cities” in the world, Rio is at or near the top. There can be few more stunning sights than arriving in Brazil’s unofficial capital by ship. The dramatic landmarks of Sugarloaf Mountain and the famous Christ the Redeemer statue overlook spectacular stretches of famed urban beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema. Enjoy delicious food and wine with a Latin flair; the sensual moves of samba dance and rhythms of traditional music on display every day of the year including the bacchanalian Carnival. Take a peoplewatching stroll along the golden beaches, ride a cable car high above the city and seek out unique gifts as you shop the city streets that seem to ring with the rhythm of samba. USHUAIA Situated on the Beagle Strait, Ushuaia is arguably the southernmost city in the world. In the past, the town has been a missionary base, penal colony and naval base for the Argentine Navy. Ushuaia is now a major tourist town, commonly used as a base for hiking, winter sports and cruises to Antarctica. Ushuaia’s prison was shut down in 1947, but it and the railway to the penal settlement have now become the Museo Maritimo and the Tren del Fin del Mundo respectively. Ushuaia is the gateway to the magnificent Tierra del Fuego National Park. Named after the Yahgan Indians who lit fires in the region, this unspoilt wilderness of forests, lakes, rivers and glaciers is bustling with wildlife. VALPARAISO/SANTIAGO Set around a magnificent harbour and against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains, Valparaiso is the capital of the Valparaiso Region, Chile’s principal port, and a delightful city to explore. Stroll its cobbled streets and quiet plazas, or head to Muelle Prat, a lively market. Just an hour inland is Santiago de Chile, founded in 1541 by the Conquistadors, and is an impressive city of Spanish Colonial styles and old world European architecture. In Santiago many new buildings have been erected since General Pinochet was ousted in 1988, showing that Santiago is flourishing under a stable and progressive government. With historic squares, green parks, wonderful restaurants and diverse neighbourhoods, Santiago begs to be explored. 7
