Saturday 26 September 16
We arrive back in Australia today, bringing to a close many incredible experiences that have defined this journey
Located about 55–60 km northwest of Chengdu in the foothills of Mount Qingcheng, Dujiangyan Panda Base is one of four major centers under China’s Conservation and Research Program for Giant Pandas. Completed in 2013 with support from the Hong Kong SAR government, this tranquil sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and disease control of giant pandas, particularly wild and elderly individuals.
Home to 20–40 giant pandas, along with red pandas, black bears and pheasants, the base offers an enriching and educational alternative to Chengdu’s busier panda centers. Visitors can explore three main public zones, Panpan, Shuangnan (with nearby Linze Garden), and Diequan, which are all connected by scenic walking paths and shuttle buses
A typical visit takes 2–4 hours. You may start at Panpan Garden, where panda mothers and cubs can often be seen eating bamboo or climbing trees Continue on to Shuangnan and Linze Gardens to spot more giant pandas, red pandas, and black bears. Finally, visit Diequan Garden, the largest area and home to Panda Lele, a playful returnee from Singapore Shuttle buses are available if you prefer not to walk the full distance.
Whether you’re observing from a shaded path or participating in volunteer activities, a visit to Dujiangyan Panda Base is a peaceful, memorable way to connect with one of the world’s most beloved endangered species.
