Wildlife Around Le A High Altitude Sanctuary

Snow Leopard

The city of Leh, nestled in the heart of Ladakh, is not only a cultural and spiritual hub but also a gateway to one of the most unique wildlife habitats in the world Surrounded by the stark beauty of the trans-Himalayan landscape, Leh offers nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts a rare opportunity to witness high-altitude species that have adapted to some of the harshest conditions on Earth. Mammals of the Leh Region.

Just beyond the city limits, the rugged terrain of Leh is home to a variety of mammals, many of which are endemic to the region. The snow leopard, one of the most elusive big cats in the world, roams the cliffs and valleys of nearby Hemis National Park, which lies just southeast of Leh. This park is also home to bharal (blue sheep), Asiatic ibex, Tibetan wolf, red fox, and the Himalayan marmot, often seen sunning themselves on rocks during the warmer months.

The Himalayan brown bear, though rare, can be found in the more remote valleys around Leh, particularly in the western parts of Ladakh These animals are shy and mostly nocturnal, making sightings a special experience

Leh’s high-altitude wetlands and riverbanks, especially along the Indus River, attract a stunning variety of birdlife. Over 300 bird species have been recorded in the region, including migratory and resident birds. The black-necked crane, a symbol of Ladakh’s ecological richness, nests in the wetlands of nearby Changthang but can occasionally be spotted in the broader Leh region during migration. Other notable birds include the golden eagle, lammergeier (bearded vulture), Tibetan snowcock, chukar partridge, and the bar-headed goose. The brahminy duck and brown-headed gull are also common sights near water bodies around Leh.

Despite its arid appearance, the Leh region supports a surprising variety of plant life. Hardy shrubs, wild roses, and medicinal herbs like seabuckthorn and artemisia thrive in the valleys and along riverbanks These plants not only support the local wildlife but also play a crucial role in traditional Ladakhi medicine and cuisine

Leh serves as a base for ecotourism and conservation efforts in Ladakh. Organizations like the Snow Leopard Conservancy and the Ladakh Ecological Development Group work closely with local communities to promote sustainable tourism and protect the region’s fragile ecosystems

For visitors, exploring the wildlife around Leh is more than just a sightseeing experience it’s a journey into a living, breathing ecosystem that has evolved in harmony with the mountains. Whether you're trekking through Hemis National Park or birdwatching along the Indus, the natural world around Leh offers a profound connection to the wild heart of the Himalayas.

ARRIVE NEW DELHI

FRI, 20TH FEBRUARY

This morning, we board our flight to India's colourful capital New Delhi, a major gateway to the country A bustling metropolis, Delhi has successfully combined both the ancient and the modern On arrival into this 'Power Capital', we are met and transferred to our hotel

With a massive population that exceeds 1 4-billion, India has a recorded history of some 30,000 years, which includes the mighty Mughals, the colonial years of British control, and the Independence Movement spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi. Among Delhi's constantly expanding number of urban skyscrapers, lie many historic monuments - remnants of bygone times. These monuments stand as silent reminders of the region’s proud history and ancient legacy.

After our long international flight, what's left of the day is at leisure. Our beautifully-located Claridge's Hotel is a blend of historic charm and modern luxury. It was India's very first post-independence 5-star hotel.

NEW DELHI

SAT, 21ST FEBRUARY

This morning, we embark on a privately guided tour of historic Old Delhi, visiting the famous Jama Masjid Mosque, followed by a colourful and exciting rickshaw ride through the narrow-congested alleys of Chandni Chowk, before visiting the Agarsen ki Baoli stepwell (an ancient water harvesting system), and beautiful Humayun’s Tomb

Construction commenced on Jama Masjid in 1644 and was completed by the famous Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan One of the largest mosques in India, it's made of red sandstone and marble The courtyard is so huge that it can accommodate 25,000 devotees at the same time! This gorgeous mosque is sometimes referred to as Masjid-I-Jahanuma, meaning the 'Mosque commanding the view of the world' The tower of the Mosque provides a magnificent view of Old Delhi's spectacular bustling streets

Preserving the antiquity of Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk is a vibrant medieval bazaar, buzzing with colour and frenetic activity. It's a labyrinth of ancient narrow alleyways crammed with small shopfronts selling delicious snacks, sweets and savouries, or offering cutprice deals on a host of products, including clothes. Some of these atmospheric alleyways are where locals bargain for items from a fine selection of perfumes, jewellery, electronics, candles, lifestyle goods and numerous idols of gods and goddesses

Lunch today will be served at Kwality Restaurant, located at the iconic Connaught Place On offer will be both continental and a mix of North Indian cuisines, including some amazing street food!

Following lunch, we visit Agrasen-ki-baoli stepwell, a quaint and serene spot of historic and heritage interest among the bustle of today's urban Delhi The intricate structure and tranquil ambience of the stepwell have endeared it to film-makers, and as a cinematic backdrop. It has featured in famous Bollywood movies. Cool underground air greets visitors as they descend the deep stepwell. Legend has it that the water in the baoli contained black magic - those who looked at it could fall into a trance and jump to certain death.

Before we head back to our hotel, we visit one of Delhi's star attractions - a stunningly beautiful and historic World-Heritage-listed monument, Humayun’s Tomb. This tomb, built in 1570, was the first substantial example of Mughal architecture in India, and the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. It inspired an architectural style that culminated in the construction of Agra's famous Taj Mahal. Inside the surrounding external walls, the most notable features are the garden squares with manicured pathways and water channels This magnificent perfectly-proportioned garden mausoleum is topped by a double dome, built at the direction of the Emperor’s wife, Haji Begum

NEW DELHI – AMRITSAR

SUN, 22ND FEBRUARY

After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our flight to Amritsar. Upon arrival, we are transferred to our hotel.

Amritsar (which means the 'Holy Pool of Nectar') is one of the most ancient and fascinating cities on the subcontinent. In Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign (1801-1839, the Kingdom of Punjab), Amritsar superseded Lahore as the pre-eminent city of the Orient. As a longstanding gateway to Central Asia, it has always been a commercial centre of significance Today, it's the thriving heart of global Sikhism - the seat of Sikh history and culture

Lunch will be served at the hotel, before we spend a truly memorable and spectacular evening visiting the Golden Temple, one of the world's great sights! We'll witness the magnificent 'Palki Ceremony', where the Holy book of scripture is ritually carried from the main shrine to the inner sanctum (where it 'goes to sleep'), accompanied by a colourful procession of priests and devoted followers The atmosphere is one of intense spirituality, with chanting, lights, and lots of colour.

AMRITSAR

MON, 23RD FEBRUARY

Following breakfast at the hotel, we begin our day's sightseeing of Amritsar. The Golden Temple is huge, spectacular, and an amazing complex of global significance. We pay a daytime visit to this most sacred of the world's Sikh temples, before exploring the places of massive historical significance at Jalianwala Bagh.

During Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign, the lower half of the Golden Temple was decorated with marble while the entire upper half was inlaid with copper covered by gold plate: hence its current name, the 'Golden Temple' Today, this is the holiest of Sikh shrines, where 24/7 recitation of the divine word never ceases

The Sixth Guru (Sri Hargobind) had the impressive Akal Takhat building constructed in 1609 as a seat of political sovereignty symbolising the unity of spiritual and temporal life It's the highest seat of earthly authority for Sikhism, a place where spiritual and temporal concerns of the Sikh people are addressed The Tower of Baba Atal Rai is an octagonal nine-storied structure about 50 meters high, with beautiful frescos relating to the life of Guru Nanak Dev Jain. In the broader temple complex, there's an amazing traditional community kitchen where free food is served each day to about 100,000 people from all faiths and backgrounds, every day!

A memorial and museum at Jallianwala Bagh commemorates the spirit of those who lost their lives in a brutal massacre which took place here in 1919. British troops opened fire without prior warning on independence protestors in the Bagh, killing several hundred. This historic event was the turning point in India's struggle for independence, and is today a very significant heritage site.

This evening, we visit the incredible Wagah Border- the only border crossing between India and Pakistan. It's an army outpost 28-kms from Amritsar and 22-kms from Lahore in Pakistan - the 'final frontier' between two neighbouring but warring nations Crowds gather at sunset to watch a colourful 'Retreat' ceremony which takes place on both sides of the border - a fabulous experience to witness from either side The changing of the guards, and the ceremonial lowering of the flag ceremony, are carried out with great military pomp As the sun sets, nationalistic fervour rises as lights are switched on to mark the end of the day Thunderous spontaneous applause erupts from the gathered crowds

AMRITSAR – DHARAMSHALA

TUE, 24TH FEBRUARY

After breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive (4 ½ hrs approx) through the Himalayan foothills to Dharamshala, and check into our hotel before lunch Dharamshala is internationally recognisable as the home of the incumbent Dalai Lama, spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people

In 1940, the Dalai Lama (real name Tensin Gyatso) became the 14th Dalai Lama of the highly religious (Buddhist) people of Tibet Communist China invaded Tibet in 1950, and Tibet became a 'national autonomous region' of China Buddhists in Tibet suffered under the anti-religious legislation of communist China, and after years of protests, a fullscale revolt broke out in 1959. The Dalai Lama was forced to flee as the uprising was crushed by Chinese troops. He, and many of his supporters, fled on foot to India, going into permanent exile as a refugee in India at Dharamshala. The Dalai Lama and his supporters set up a shadow Tibetan government, which today remains active in exile. It's based at the busy little traveller town of McLeod Ganj, just uphill from Dharamshala. Dharamshala itself has a popular museum and a busy bazaar to explore on our afternoon at leisure in this atmospheric mountain community.

GARLI - SHIMLA

SAT, 28TH FEBRUARY

Today is a 'drive day' through this very scenicallybeautiful hill-state to spectacular Shimla - stopping for lunch along the way Shimla (population approx 175,000) is the capital of Himachal Pradesh state, and extends along a high ridge in the Himalayan foothillsaverage altitude about 2,250-metres In 1864, Shimla became the summer 'hill-station' capital of British India After independence, it became the capital of East Punjab, and later was made capital of Himachal Pradesh Today, it is recognised for its colonial architecture, its outstanding natural environment, and its role as an educational hub It remains the terminus of the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway (home of the famous 'Toy Train'), a UNESCO World-Heritage site built by the British in 1903. Shimla was home to Rudyard Kipling (Nobel Prize for Literature) who famously wrote stories and poems of British soldiers, and children's stories.

This mountain community is also known for its arts and handicraft shops (jewellery, embroidered articles, sculptures, and leather goods) that line ‘The Mall’, a 7km-long pedestrian roadway in the heart of town. Here, shops and people converge, reflecting the supreme charm and colonial history of this unique mountain community. The Ridge is a large open space alongside the Mall Road. It hosts the the Christ Church, secondoldest church in Northern India. The Lakkar Bazaar (near the Mall) is a market specializing in wooden items and crafts Unusually, numerous agile monkeys roam the city Shimla is home to South Asia's only natural ice-skating rink, from December to February

In the evening, we'll enjoy a short walk on the famous Mall Road, before dinner at our wonderful historic hotel. Shimla leads the list of Indian cities with the highest-ranked hotels - of which the Oberoi Cecil and Wildflower Hall are the most popular.

This is Shimla's highest peak (approximately 2,600-metres above sea level), with views of the city and the snow=covered Himalayas.

Our next highlight is the Vice Regal Lodge Drenched in colonial vibes, this majestic well-maintained building is one of India's most-impressive British-era buildings Surrounded by lush green botanical gardens, the Lodge once served as the summer residence of the Indian Viceroy each year, when the administrative centre temporarily moved from Delhi to the cooler climate of Shimla The lodge is also known as the President's House, as it now serves as a summer retreat for the current Indian President Positioned on Observatory Hill, the Lodge offers panoramic views of the entire area.
