BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEM BY DAIMLER
ercedes-Benz and Setra M buses of Daimler Buses are increasingly focused on safety
thanks to state-of-the-art systems such as Active Brake Assist 4 (ABA 4), Preventive Brake Assist and Sideguard Assist. The first one was previewed in 2017 with the launch of the new Setra 231 DT and represents the last evolutionary step of Active Brake Assist, the emergency braking assistance system introduced ten years ago. If at that time emergency braking was activated in response to moving vehicles, and subsequently with ABA 3 also in response to stationary obstacles, now the braking manoeuvre is performed automatically even in the presence of pedestrians. In the event of collision with moving pedestrians, the system warns the driver and initiates partial braking at the same time. Thus the driver can avoid impact by performing a full-stop braking or just a steering manoeuvre. Active Brake Assist 4 is based on new-generation radar technology that also features in Mercedes-Benz cars and trucks. The long-range radar registers vehicles and stationary obstacles at a maximum distance of up to 250 m in a direct line in front of the touring coach. Motorcycles and bicycles or mopeds are identified at up to 160 m while pedestrians at up to 80 m. The short-range radar has a maximum range of 70 m. ABA 4 will be installed as standard equipment on all touring coaches from Mercedes-Benz and Setra: from the Mercedes Tourismo RHD to the Setra Comfort Class 500 and TopClass 500. Preventive Brake Assist is the active emergency braking assist system for city buses. The warning cascade and the braking intervention are designed for operations in city traffic. For this reason, Preventive Brake Assist intentionally does not perform automatic emergency stops. This reduces the risk of injury for passengers on board, in particular for standing passengers. The driver still has the option of an emergency stop at any time. Preventive Brake Assist is available as an option for the entire model family of the Mercedes-Benz Citaro, including the CapaCity large-capacity bus and the range of the Mercedes-Benz Conecto city buses. Last, but not least, Sideguard Assist: the first turning assistance system for city buses and touring coaches with pedestrian detection. The system operates in several stages: if there is a moving object in the side monitoring zone, the driver is given a visual warning.
On the touring coaches, a LED in the shape of a yellow triangle lights up at the driver’s eye level in the side mirror on the co-driver’s side and in the instrument cluster. On the Citaro, it is integrated into the A0-pillar on the door side. The lamp draws the driver’s attention towards the situation alongside the vehicle. If the sensors detect the risk of a collision, there is an additional visual warning in the form of a red triangular LED, as well as a vibration warning in the driver’s seat. Mercedes offers Sideguard Assist for the city bus Citaro in all versions including the high-deck touring coach Tourismo. Setra offers it for its touring coaches of the Comfort Class 500 and TopClass 500 including the Setra S 531 DT double-decker bus.
