Transport Exchange Group

Inside the Transport Exchange Group Meet the organisation that’s improving efficiency across the freight, courier and haulage industry

T

ransport Exchange Group is an organisation dedicated to minimising dead mileage and empty running in the road transport industry through its innovative online freight exchanges. It is enabling operators to get connected and engage with other like-minded businesses, making it possible to identify, develop and maintain lasting relationships with partners and subcontractors to create trusted networks, boost operational efficiency and increase profitability. The Transport Exchange Group concept was created by CEO Lyall Cresswell initially to reduce the dead mileage that same day couriers have to deal with due to the on-demand basis of their work. With a background in the logistics sector he utilised his knowledge and experience of the industry to help create a viable and comprehensive solution. It has since evolved into a highlysuccessful freight trading platform for not only couriers and owner drivers but also hauliers, freight forwarders and logistics providers.

2

What has been developed is an effective web-based system that is available across both PCs and tablets, as well as on smartphones using a dedicated app. The software as a service (SAAS) system is designed to be fast, flexible and responsive to offer unrivalled simplicity and ease of use. Using the system’s intuitive tools, members can quickly and efficiently share information about empty vehicles and available work. For example, the automated load matching provides more than 140,000 notifications every day of current work opportunities based on vehicle location and status, while the mobile app used by almost 4,000 drivers enables users to advertise real-time location and availability status, giving immediate visibility to their trading partners on the go. In recent years, the Exchange has been developed to deliver high levels of transparency throughout the supply chain. The system is integrated with over a dozen popular telematics systems to provide visibility and control for both

in-house and sub-contractor fleets. In fact, Transport Exchange Group has just received the Integration Replicator of the Year Award from TomTom Telematics for the largest number of integrated members in 2015. Back in 2000, during the early days of the Internet, when the Transport Exchange Group opened for business it was less common for a courier or haulage company to have access to the internet. As a result, the company began operations using a small and dedicated team of staff that communicated with these operators directly, manually establishing links between them to eliminate dead mileage on return journeys by supplying additional work. Today’s Transport Exchange Group boasts and experienced team of technology and logistics professionals, with more than 80% having previously worked within the road transport sector. This includes a dedicated development team of 20 full-time developers and an 18-strong customer service department ensuring a one-to-one relationship and

communication with members on a daily basis. Since its early days, the Exchange has become the largest, busiest and fastest growing network of road transport operators in the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe with over 4,000 active operators, with membership increasing over 10 per cent in the last 12 months. As a result, the organisation has seen the number of loads posted on its freight trading platform in the past six months expand by more than a third year-on-year. To join the Exchange, businesses have to complete a 17-point accreditation process that verifies all necessary transport-and business-related documentation to ensure every new member is operating compliantly. The membership is only available to tradeonly transport businesses within the courier and logistics industries, and once a company becomes a member it is required to sign a charter to ensure that it will operate within strict business and operational standards.

The Exchange also operates an online feedback system where members can rate each other based on delivery and payment, providing added insight into a company’s performance. With the ability to access this detailed information, members can make informed decisions about who they work with and have peace of mind that partners will provide the expected levels of service. The true value of the Exchange can be further highlighted by the engagement and feedback rates, with 97 per cent of members active on the trading platform daily and an overall satisfaction rating of 99.5 per cent. Moreover, feedback by proportion of transactions has reached 33 per cent providing useful insight into members’ performance.

access to a large pool of frequent work and a large virtual fleet of more than 40,000 available vehicles. Every year Transport Exchange Group hosts its own awards event to bring members together for a night of networking. The event is designed to encourage high work standards on the Exchange and recognise the outstanding work that is taking place. www.transportexchangegroup.com

Transport Exchange Group prides itself on the high level of involvement from its members and continues to be focused on supplying them with a great level of visibility to provide a highly-effective solution with complete peace of mind. The Exchange has benefitted thousands of logistics businesses by allowing them

VALUE OF VISIBILITY– TRACKING THE EVOLUTION OF THE FREIGHT EXCHANGE

O

ver the past few years there has been significant change in the way freight exchanges operate, taking advantage of advances in technology and faster Internet speeds. As a result, we are now seeing a system much about the sharing of data – whether location, status, vehicle type or planned destination – to deliver complete visibility for road transport operators that is driving smarter, more profitable ways of working. The Transport Exchange Group is leading the way in introducing cross platform telematics to the industry. Initially these trading tools were simple fleet boards where companies could post their available loads. Since they became powerful business tools allowing members to proactively communicate information about empty vehicles and availability, so road transport operators were able to interactively collaborate, work more efficiently and profitably. Today we are seeing the introduction of a central platform that can operate seamlessly with other supply chain and back office systems to achieve true data integration. We often hear technology companies referring to a thing called the Internet of Things (IoT), which in simple terms is a network of physical objects associated with sensors to enable them to collect and exchange data. The real benefit of this approach is that it is now possible to connect objects, such as vehicles, securely over public networks and get them to talk to each other and relevant management systems. By gathering, analysing and sharing this data, there is a huge opportunity to track and monitor assets to greatly reduce waste and cost.

4

However, the real potential for the road transport and logistics marketplace is the ability to bring together data from so many disparate telematics systems. There are at least 15 significant vehicle tracking suppliers, with comfortably over 100 providers in total. With little or no industry standards within the telematics sector, there were previously no means for logistics partners to share vehicle positioning and other useful data unless they are using the same tracking tool (and even this would require costly integration of some kind). Freight exchanges are now able to offer the ability to create a central platform that operates seamlessly with multiple telematics systems to achieve true data integration for operators. What this means is there is now an opportunity to bring together information from multiple data sources providing companies with complete visibility of in-house, subcontracted and partner fleets. This added visibility can help road transport and logistics businesses fill empty vehicles and trailers through interactive co-operation between business partners. It allows the creation of trusted networks, boost operational efficiency and increase profitability simply by being better connected. Moreover, with the increasing adoption of smart matching technology there is an opportunity to move visibility away from something that is essentially passive towards a more active and dynamic process. Furthermore, by integrating vehicle tracking with a freight exchange there is now a chance to increase the telematics value proposition for smaller fleets. Often the return on investment for these operators has failed to justify the ongoing

cost of the tracking system. The reality is that despite many acknowledged benefits, few are truly measurable and there is sometimes a perception that significant internal resources are required to maximise the potential of the technology. By combining telematics with their freight exchange, these smaller operators now have the potential to be part of an extensive virtual, fullytracked fleet. As a result, they have the ability to become more attractive to larger organisations that are looking for end-to-end visibility of their supply chains, while helping to promote unused capacity to other members, minimising dead mileage and boosting revenues.

Brian Christmas

Transport Exchange Group’s Haulage and Courier Exchanges now have agreements with more than a dozen leading telematics providers to deliver complete visibility and control for both in-house and sub-contractor fleets using their unique SCALE infrastructure (Smart Location and Location Exchange). As a result, data from many of the bestused vehicle tracking tools can now be combined through the Exchange to create the first systemneutral telematics integration platform for the logistics and road transport sectors. The value of visibility is already seeing active, tracked members of the Exchange reduce levels of empty running from an industry average of around 30 per cent to less than 10 per cent. A more efficient use of available capacity is having a dramatic impact on revenue growth, operational performance and lower environmental impact.

Direct Connect Logistics

Direct Connect Logistics expands with the Transport Exchange

Director Rhys Hacking, “It’s an incredible system, it works so brilliantly. I’ve been astounded

D

oes specialising mean that you have to put up with a restricted clientele? The answer is NOT if you join Haulage Exchange according to Rhys Hackling, MD and founder of Direct Connect Logistics (DCL).

From the very first day of trading however, Direct Connect Logistics was a member of the Exchange and it didn’t take the company long to build a reputation as the go-to firm for 7.5 tonne vehicles.

“The industry is so diverse, that you need support from other people. There are always times you need a driver or an artic and the Exchange is the perfect way to find them.”

“We saw an opportunity in the market, for a haulage firm specialising in 7.5 tonne vehicles as many companies were only working with huge lorries or vans and there was no point competing in an already crowded market.’

Rhys goes on to say: “Our customers are 90% 7.5 tonne work. In fact at this stage, 80% of work comes from other people, with 85 per cent of that provided by the Exchange. It’s an incredible system, it works so brilliantly. I’ve been astounded,” said Rhys.

This is what makes the Exchange such a special tool. Not only does it help promote members operating within a niche market, but it also allows them to be as versatile as companies with a much broader set of services.

Despite the company’s rapid growth, it quickly became apparent that one downside of specialising in a 7.5 tonners meant that there weren’t enough companies which required that type of vehicle on a regular basis.

As much as he is a fan of the way in which Haulage Exchange can generate business for him, he’s also found it useful for supplying business to regular customers of his own when he doesn’t have the time or vehicle capacity to do it himself.

12

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

Haulage Exchange gives every member the ability to accommodate their customers’ needs, while also making sure they have enough work to maximise their fleet capacity. Haulage Exchange has given DCL a great start, perfect for a company which is really going places.

FAT Solutions

Fat Solutions invests in its first brand new 18 tonne Mercedes truck

Small enough to care, big enough to do the job S

ole owner and director of Fat Solutions, Gary Armstrong began his career in the haulage industry having set a business that specialised in the production and distribution of bio diesel. The company would produce bio diesel from waste cooking oil sourced from local takeaways, and sell the recycled product to bus, coach and taxi operators. As the company grew it required a much larger vehicle to carry a growing volume of bio diesel, resulting in Gary obtaining his operator’s license and acquiring his first 7.5-tonne truck. The newly purchased vehicle allowed the business to carry up to four tonnes of cooking oil at any one time. The business continued to expand and eventually began to transition into the haulage industry due to the type of delivery requests made by its customers. As the progression of the Euro legislations demanded cleaner and more complicated engine systems, the bio diesel aspect of the business began

FAT Solutions 01630 652543

to become less important so the company focused on the haulage opportunities. Fat Solutions prides itself on the high calibre of service it provides to its clients and implements a ‘small enough to care and big enough to do that job’ mantra. Since setting up his business ten years ago, Gary has personally ensured that his drivers are highly qualified, capable and reliable. His drivers are all CPC trained as standard and often receive refresher courses from Gary himself. In fact, he often takes them on difficult jobs to ensure that they continue to act in accordance with his expectations in a safe and efficient way.

The business provides a high quality and reliable service to its clients on a daily basis, with the capacity to carry anything and everything that will fit into its fleet of vehicles including a varied range of loads from ambient produce to high value mechanical machinery. The company has been able to fulfil all customer expectations by joining Transport Exchange Group’s Haulage Exchange and establishing valued partnerships with other members. Fat Solutions became a member of Haulage Exchange seven years ago, and since then the business has grown exponentially by using the online freight trading platform. It enables the company to find jobs located close to its vehicles when they are empty to eliminate dead mileage fast. The Exchange has provided Fat Solutions with an extensive network of wellmatched connections in the haulage industry, so Gary has been able to establish many positive working relationships as well as several longstanding friendships. Commenting on the Haulage Exchange, Gary said: “It has being fantastic for us and really contributed to the success of the business. We regularly use highly-reliable sub-contractors that we have met through the Haulage Exchange.” In fact, Fat Solutions was recently nominated for the Company of the Year Award at the Transport Exchange Group’s annual award ceremony. Fat Solutions currently operates a fleet of two 18-tonne Scania trucks, one brand new 18 tonne Mercedes truck, a support van and a motorbike. Its fleet is fitted with TomTom tracking devices. The combined use of tracking and the Exchange Mobile App creates a great solution to minimise empty running and maximise profits. In the last twelve months, Fat Solutions was able to purchase a brand new Mercedes truck using the profits it made the previous year. Gary never thought that he would be in the position to buy new vehicles outright, however thanks to the combination of his diligent work ethic, fantastic reputation and support from the Haulage Exchange he has been able to do so. Gary intends to continue to grow the business without compromising on the high quality of its service.

ork anniversaries can be somewhat of a bore in most cases, but not when your company has doubled its fleet in less than two years. R H Irvine Haulage has every reason to celebrate this year. This general haulage specialist company was founded two years ago by Roger and Sarah Irvine. The Suffolk based business prides itself on offering a first rate haulage service nationwide, its services include the handling and storage of all types of general haulage goods.

R H Irvine joined the Transport Exchange Group’s popular online platform, Courier Exchange, in December 2013 to help start up the business. As an accredited Courier Exchange member R H Irvine acquired all relevant insurances and full paperwork. Documents are regularly checked by Courier Exchange making sure that the company is still operating to a high standard.

R H Irvine owns and operates a mixed fleet of Ford and Vauxhall manufactured vehicles, ranging from small vans up to 3.5 tonne large vans. The fleet is Euro 5 compliant and each vehicle is installed with modern Navman Wireless telematics technology.

The company chose Courier Exchange due to its stellar reputation, particularly in regards to its ability to help with return loads - which in turn has the potential to generate more customers. R H Irvine commented on the benefits of the Exchange, “It’s [Courier Exchange] increased our profits and allowed us to expand our business without extra advertising and without cold calling customers”.

Alongside using Euro 5 legislated vehicles reducing the fleet’s environmental impact, R H Irvine introduced a safer driving policy of a maximum speed of 68mph which is being applied to all of its current vehicles.

Despite forming a few years after one of the worst recessions in history, R H Irvine persevered with the combination of its dedication, high quality service and the assistance from Courier Exchange. The company representative explains

www.transportmonthly.co.uk

that the poor economy has not affected the business at all. This is proven by the company’s recent expansion by growing its workforce and doubling its fleet. The team is also preparing for a double celebration: the company’s two year anniversary as well as its second year of being a member of Courier Exchange. After two successful years in the haulage industry R H Irvine continues to invest in its fleet, with plans to purchase large vehicles to allow for more flexibility of cargo. R H Irvine would like to thank the following companies for their custom and support over the last few years, Ashford Cullen Logistics Ltd., Commercial Drivers Personnel Ltd and Kanga Couriers Ltd.

Viking Road Runners

Warrior of the road O

wner driver Albert Ballantyne founded his same-day courier business Viking Road Runners with Paul Keeling in September 2003. The company operates nationwide and runs a modern fleet of Renault and Citroen short wheel base vans. Viking Road Runners joined the Transport Exchange Group’s freight trading platform, Courier Exchange in March 2009 to get new opportunities within the courier marketplace. Since then, the Exchange enabled the company to grow by developing new working relationships with like-minded businesses, with Albert describing the Exchange as a “fantastic platform that allows us to tap into a vast number of fellow operators and drivers.” During the recession that badly affected so many businesses, Viking Road Runners adopted and applied a ‘stay open-minded and you will succeed’ philosophy. Following this mantra, the company survived the contraction in the UK economy. This was partly

made possible by the Exchange, which allowed the company to effectively scale up and down in line with business demand, while at the same time maximise in-house resources to boost efficiency and profitability. Viking Road Runners has recently been awarded a number of important new contracts that will allow the business to continue to move forward. The new growth was particularly beneficial for the company at the beginning of the year when trading volumes are traditionally lower. Albert is planning to continue growing the business through the Courier Exchange, with ambitions to become one of the leading same-day courier operators in the UK. This will be backed over the next six months with a significant fleet investment initiative planned. Throughout its twelve year career Viking Road Runners has formed numerous great business relationships. The company would like to thank the following people and companies
