Feedback on other hazards and issues raised: How much noise is too much noise: Engine room noise has been measured on First Fleet vessels and although the hearing protection currently supplied for use is adequate the store has been asked to purchase hearing protection of a higher level.

Engineers wishing to change to the new “Class 5” ear muffs can please an order with the BSY store via a stores request form.

If concerned about hearing loss using current protection, reduce the risk by using ear plugs and muffs together. (thanks to J Marshall for your work in this field)

Concerns have been raised regarding what to do for a fuel or Oil spill.

For initial response follow: The 4 C’s – not the 3 Sea’s.

•

Control Ensure the spill does not become any worse. Isolate the cause, turn off the tap, closing the valve or righting a container / drum that has tipped over.

• Contain If on land, look which way the fluid is flowing, and place absorbent material on the downhill side, check for drains that may need to be protected. On water, Use spill kit absorbent booms, and pads, and always overlap booms.

• Clean up Collect any material that was used to contain the spill, and place it in a plastic bag.

DO NOT PLACE IN GENERAL RUBBISH – SEND IT TO BSY • Communicate Immediately notify your line manager of the spill and other’s working in the area.

Remember: If using cleaning agents or solvents as part of the clean-up read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and report the incident on an SRF

Security. Have you seen or heard any TV or radio advertisements relating to Radicalisation ?

What is radicalisation?

Radicalisation happens when a person’s thinking and behaviour become significantly different from how most of the members of society and community view social issues and participate politically.

Is someone you know becoming a radical?

When someone begins to separate from their family, friends and neighbors and community or demonstrates a significant move towards extreme beliefs and attitudes, that person may be in the early stages of the radicalisation process. Those who radicalise and display threatening behavior, incite hatred or promote the use of violence for their cause require some form of intervention What should you do?

Early intervention is best. However, before you try to intervene, try to fully understand a person’s situation and motivation, if in doubt call the National Security Hotline on 1800 1234 00 for further assistance.
