The Duke of York VISITS TRAINING 2000 HRH, The Duke of York, KG visited Training 2000 to recognise and commend the growing number of Apprenticeships that are available to young people across the region. The Duke of York has a continued focus on promoting institutions that support Apprenticeship programmes and the development of employability skills. His Royal Highness was taken on a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities on offer at Training 2000 and was also shown around the engineering and automotive workshops where he was presented with a golf pitch marker that the engineering apprentices made.

The Duke then went on to visit the dental surgery where he met with staff and apprentices. Seventeen year-old business administration apprentice, Laura Heaven, had the opportunity of a lifetime when she got the chance to meet His Royal Highness during his visit. Laura said:

A HAPPY ENGINEERING TEAM Electrical engineering apprentices are rubbing their hands together after a kind-hearted benefactor donated a range of equipment. SEW-Eurodrive Ltd of West Yorkshire donated the equipment and Regional Manager Richard Mawdsley said:

SEW- Eurodrive are global leaders in Industrial Transmission Solutions and see great benefit for us to be involved in Training 2000. Their apprentices are the engineers and innovators of tomorrow,

and will form the backbone of British Industry. As they proceed in their careers, it is of great importance to us that they do so with the knowledge and confidence in the wide range of gearmotors and control electronics we provide. We are happy to be involved in the training of the next generation of engineers”. Meanwhile Keith Maher, Lead Instructor in the Training 2000 Electrical and Maintenance department said:

WORKING TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS

Barnfield Construction Limited is proud to be a key partner of Training 2000. Based in the North West we are a leader in providing best value construction services. Our vision is to establish lasting relationships with our customers by exceeding their expectations and gaining trust through exceptional performance by every member of our team.

Expanding With the Future in Mind In recent months Training 2000 has established a new site in Carlisle and have relocated our Bispham operation to the Blackpool Business Park. All our sites including those in Blackburn, Nelson and Preston, provide ease of accessibility for learners and help to facilitate growth in provision. The new 900 sq ft base at Carlyle’s Court, Carlisle, will accommodate up to 40 learners per week and comprises of two classrooms and an IT suite. At Blackpool Business Park, the 1,685 sq ft site offers modern and spacious accommodation where learners will work on the theory side of their qualifications in-between learning on-the-job. Speaking of the firm’s expansion, Michael Hunt, operations director at Training 2000, said: “There has

been much growth in provision and demand for our training, especially for dental courses in North Cumbria, and we are particularly delighted to have established a base in Carlisle for the first time. These new sites will provide much needed support for our learners and we are looking forward to further growth in the future.”

The idea of a ‘full-service’ agency” is an absurd myth because of the explosion of channels and media options. You should stick to what you do best and then get the experts in to do the rest” were the thoughts of Nick Oakley when he came up with the concept of the Media Village in 2011. The Media Village has its roots in one of Lancashire’s great trading traditions – the co-operative; a collective of successful media businesses, forming a trusted alliance of professionals. Collectively they can offer every tactical marketing tool in the box – web, digital, design, advertising, exhibition, mailing print, PR, copywriting and crucially marketing strategy and advice, and let’s be frank here for a second, although many companies advertise a range of different services, not many actually manage them all in-house or if they do, manage them consistently well. By contrast, with the Media Village, you can be confident that your work is being handled by an industry expert and because you are able to deal with a single point of contact, it’s as if you were dealing with a single company. This way of working offers numerous advantages, most notably, campaigns typified by joined-up strategic thinking, improved quality, faster turnarounds and savings on your digital and media spend and on your time. It’s early days but with the Evening Telegraph “Team of the Year” and the Biba’s “Change for Growth” awards under their belt things bode well for the future.

plumbing apprentice ‘takes the plunge’ Plumbing apprentice, Laura Gwilliam, from Earby, has swapped her bedside manner for boilers, after taking the unusual step of joining her father’s business rather than pursuing a career in healthcare. Now the twenty three year-old is urging other young women to consider Apprenticeships as a way to gain on-the-job training and real experience – and show that women can cut it in traditionally maledominated industries. Laura said:

After school, I started training to be a nurse but felt it wasn’t for me and I’d always been interested in plumbing after watching my dad build his business. At first I thought I might be too old to start an Apprenticeship, but Training 2000 has helped me to adapt and develop my skills” Laura began her plumbing Apprenticeship when she was nineteen after a colleague’s recommendation. Her Apprenticeship in plumbing has allowed her to practice all the core skills that she will require in her profession, including gas safety, servicing and commissioning. Now Laura is working for her father’s business and studying for Level 2 and Level 3 NVQ qualifications part-time. In the future, she would like to take over her father’s company if the opportunity arises. Lindsay Dust, Career Development Advisor at Training 2000, said: “Laura is a fantastic student. Her drive and commitment is commendable, and a testament to the hard work that all our apprentices put in to their career development.”

Money isn’t everything… Money isn’t everything. So concludes a survey by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), commissioned by David Cameron. The survey found that people who are married, have jobs and own their homes are the most likely to be satisfied with their lives. Economically, the survey data shows that despite Britain’s falling Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Real National Net Income (RNNI) after the credit crunch in 2008, the general mood in the country actually went up. Admittedly, there are some who find it difficult to get by financially, but when asked what makes a great place to work, the majority of us focus a lot less on pay and benefits than you might think. Employers need to meet certain financial expectations, but once those are met, pay increases alone can’t improve the workplace. Work content, team spirit, work-life balance and fulfilling personal ambitions are equally, if not more, important. Employers also underestimate the power of “thank you”. When did you last recognise a job well done with these two simple words? Not as recently as you probably think. Beever and Struthers is a top 60 firm of Chartered Accountants, with 22 partners and about 160 staff in offices in Blackburn, Manchester and London. Training 2000 redevelops new course – military style Training 2000 has re-launched its Military Preparation Programme which helps 16 to 18 year olds prepare for life in the armed forces. The free 14-week course has full support from the Army and last year attracted 220 young people. The programme is delivered by staff with a wealth of military experience and includes paid travel expenses, one week free residential, physical fitness training, combat clothing and up to five nationally-recognised qualifications. Alexandra O’Connor, Business Lead at Training 2000, said:

With the military so high on the news agenda, we took steps to redevelop the course to ensure that young people understand the requirements of the selection process and how they need to conduct themselves should they make it into the military, which is a highly demanding environment both mentally and physically.

With several opportunities to enroll throughout the year, Training 2000 is urging young people who are interested to get in touch on 01254 54659.

“We’ve already helped a large number of budding service men and women to achieve the highest selection grades possible and hope to continue to do this as we move forward.”

Apprentices welcome Conservative MP Jake Berry Local apprentices met Conservative MP, Jake Berry, during his visit to Training 2000 to celebrate the success of the 100 in 100 Apprenticeship campaign. In his bid to find jobs for 100 people in 100 days, a quarter of the apprentices placed in employment were Training 2000 learners. The campaign, which was launched in February last year , benefited local employers and young learners across the region and exceeded its target of employing 100 apprentices on the 75th day of the campaign! During his visit the East Lancashire MP was taken on a tour of the stateof-the-art facilities and met with apprentice Peter Dunkerley, who works for Rolls-Royce. Peter said:

Mr Berry added:

I am extremely impressed by what the company has to offer, and the vital service it provides both to young people in the local area and the employers it serves.”

Training 2000 strikes gold Training 2000 has been awarded the prestigious Investors in People (IiP) gold status in recognition of delivering ‘world class best practice’. As the only Group Training Association in the UK to be awarded gold status, this highlights Training 2000 as being cutting-edge whilst operating at the very highest of standards. Nigel Rowlands, Human Resources Director at Training 2000, said:

“We are delighted that the company has achieved such a high rating and gained an additional 12 points above the IiP requirement standard.” “I would like to say a big thank you to all those who have contributed to achieving a high level of corporate recognition and the implementation and management of such a smooth and efficient assessment process.”

Former Training 2000 Engineering Apprentice Andrew Hudson has been nominated for the Nuclear Supply Chain Apprentice of the Year, a prestigious and recognised award sponsored by Cogent and The National Skills Academy (Nuclear). Now in his first year of a BEng in Mechanical Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University, he’s now a Technical Engineer working at Graham Engineering Ltd in Nelson. Andrew previously completed a 4 year Advanced Apprenticeship at Training 2000 and has passed rigorous tests in order to be shortlisted, including completing a detailed application form, submitting a written essay and interviewed by an assessment panel. The winner will be announced at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel on 14th March 2013 in a ceremony hosted by TV personality Ben Fogle.

Good luck Andrew!

After a thorough assessment the report published by the IiP said that Training 2000 demonstrated a ‘leading edge in practice’. The report also revealed: “Through effective stewardship, the business has focused on maximising current opportunities, both internally through restructuring its workforce, and externally by addressing the significant challenges presented to them within this challenging economy.” Steve Gray, Chief Executive at Training 2000, added:

We have a deep commitment to developing knowledge and skills within the business and I think this award highlights the excellence of our business management and the quality training provision provided by Training 2000, and we are thrilled to receive this gold award.”

National Apprenticeship Week The sixth annual National Apprenticeship Week is set to be the biggest and best yet with almost a thousand businesses expected to take place across England. The week, which is taking place from 11th – 15th March, is co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate Apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the economy.

Sue Price, Divisional Area Director National Apprenticeship Service for the North. Apprenticeships help young people develop high quality, highly sought-after skills, improving their prospects while boosting an organisation’s bottom line. And currently employers with less than 1,000 employees can also benefit from a £1,500 Apprenticeship Grant for Employers when they recruit their first apprentice, so there has never been a better time to get involved.

Every year the week increases in popularity and National Apprenticeship Week 2012 was no exception with more than 150 events and activities on offer in North West alone. These ranged from business events designed to encourage more employers to recruit apprentices, to interactive careers events aimed at potential apprentices. This year, supporters are being encouraged to organise events and activity around the theme “Apprenticeships Deliver” – showcasing the benefits high quality Apprenticeships deliver for both apprentices and their employers. A toolkit with lots of advice and ideas to help organisations plan their own events is available on the apprenticeships.org.uk website as well as a national calendar of events so individuals can find out what is happening in their local area.

EAST LANCASHIRE’S FIRST UNIVERSITY TECHNICAL COLLEGE OPENS IN AUGUST 2013 - make learning work for 14-19 year olds Britain has a great need for technicians and highly skilled, technically qualified people to work both locally and in global markets. To meet this need the government is supporting University Technical Colleges (UTCs). The first in East Lancashire, Visions Learning Trust, will be opening in August 2013 at Victoria Mill in Burnley. It will provide a fantastic opportunity for young people in Pennine Lancashire to access an outstanding education that is linked directly to developing the skills and knowledge that local employers will need. We caught up with Martin Callagher, Managing Director of Visions Learning Trust, on the progression of the project.

When did work on the build begin?

When will the build be ready to handover?

The builders started work at the end of June 2012 by clearing the inside of the building. The whole building is now watertight. There is a fantastic north light roof that was in complete decay and almost destroyed, but has now been completely restored. Until December scaffolding hid it but now it’s complete it looks fantastic.

We’re on schedule to open on 27th August 2013.

How is the work of the two buildings going? The restoration of the old building and the build of the new are happening simultaneously and it’s very exciting. For a while it just looked like the shell of a building but once the initial gutting was done what really struck me was how quickly it started to take shape. The walls are up and some of the classrooms are almost finished! With the existing part we’ve tried to keep the renovations sympathetic, melding the new with the old. The floors of the original building have been completely concrete relayed to make them safe. We’ve also been working with English Heritage to make sure we don’t lose any of the history of the building whilst ensuring we build a safe and secure environment for young people, this has been a really enjoyable part of the project from our point of view.

We’ve also been in talks with Burnley Town Council and the planners and we’re very excited to announce that the UTC will form part of the ‘On the Banks’ development.

Have you started recruiting members of staff? The staffing structure is in place and we will start to recruit in spring. Vacancies are being advertised on the website: www.visionslearningtrust. co.uk/staff-recruitment/

What are you doing to raise awareness of UTC? The website is the main source of information for people and from there you can apply online or view our prospectus. People will have also heard us on 2BR radio and seen our adverts in newspapers across the local area. We’re talking directly to young people and their parents at roadshows in shopping centres and at local sponsoring employers. We’ve already had nearly 400 registrations of interest, and applications are now coming in every week, so this is clearly something that young people realise will give them the skills that employers want.

lead sponsor

What challenges do you face? Demand for staff in engineering and construction sectors is huge. People don’t realise how many opportunities there are, both in this country and around the world. Engineering is very broad in terms of industry so there are many opportunities for young people in a wide variety of industries. Another challenge we face is changing people’s perception of who an engineering or construction course is suitable for. It’s the total opposite of the perception most people, and in particular girls, have. We want to attract a whole range of people with differing abilities because that’s what employers want. In addition, we are trying to make people aware we are truly comprehensive in our admissions policy, whether young people want to go to university, straight into an Apprenticeship, onto FE or into a job, we cater for young people of all abilities. There are lots of routes and options available, and depending on individual ability and aspirations, we can take learners on different pathways.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

I just want to say what a fantastic educational facility Vision Learning Trust promises to be. When we talk to people and explain what the offer is they can really see how it can benefit themselves or a member of their family. It really is an amazing opportunity for young people who are looking for a new route into employment or further education. Our aim is to help all our learners gain first class academic qualifications within an inspiring engineering culture. The combination of these two things make us a very attractive proposition for aspiring learners aged between 14-19.”

Showcasing the range of Apprenticeships and quality training available locally, the event enabled young people to speak to current apprentices, meet prospective employers and find out more about Apprenticeship opportunities. The event formed part of our drive to help young people make informed choices about their future, following national figures released in December 2012 which showed that applications to popular courses at university, such as dentistry, a specialism of Training 2000’s, were down by 5.6 per cent. Steve Gray, chief executive at Training 2000, added: “We’ve seen year-on-year growth in numbers attending our Apprenticeship events and are delighted with this year’s turn out. Now, more than ever, due to rising university fees and a potential drop in applications for full-time university courses, people are becoming increasingly aware of the alternative options available to them. They understand that there isn’t always necessarily one route into their chosen career. People are coming around to the fact that Apprenticeships can boost earning potential and can also lead to a degree, so it’s great that so many people attended our events to find out more about being an apprentice”.

I’m looking at all my options for when I’ve finished school, but I’m really interested in Dental Nursing or a Business Admin Apprenticeship.”

Apprenticeships are the best of both worlds – you achieve great qualifications and you get paid at the same time!”

Employee shareholder status given the green light In October 2012, Chancellor George Osborne announced proposals for a new type of employee ownership in which employees will sacrifice their employment rights in exchange for shares in the employer. Employment rights will be exchanged for shares worth between £2,000 and £50,000 and any growth in value of the shares will be exempt from Capital Gains Tax (‘CGT’). Shares in excess of £50,000 can be issued but the CGT exemption will not apply over and above that amount. Employment rights lost will include claims for unfair dismissal and redundancy pay, requests for flexible working time for training and the employee will be obliged to give 16 weeks notice of their date of return following maternity leave, adoption leave or paternity leave. The share scheme will operate so that on an employee’s dismissal, an employer may buy back the shares at a reasonable price. Not surprisingly there has been a mixed response from both employees and employers with concerns over the risk of a fall in value of the shares being voiced by employees. We will have to wait and see how popular the employee shareholder status proves to be. It will be some time before we see any claims in the employment tribunals as there is unlikely to be any dispute until the point where the employee shareholder leaves the business. It may well be that employees who become employee shareholders find other ways to seek justice through discrimination or automatically unfair dismissal claims.
