Alpine attractions, film and otherwise, appeal to Rossland festival goers ARNE PETRYSHEN Advertiser Reporter

The Rossland Mountain Film Festival brought people to the mountain city to take in the newest crop of ski, snowboard and mountain climbing films. Films, however, weren’t the only attractions, as there were also some workshops and talks. Notably, East Kootenay mountain climbers and authors, Pat and Baiba Morrow talked about their experiences in the Purcells,

Himalayas and other mountainous regions. Their talk focussed on the importance of pristine places in nature and the trend of these places to be developed. They stressed that in their travels they had seen the stress that comes to places like Mount Everest and small cut-off communities when an influx of backpackers and travellers come. This they called industrial tourism. They touched on the clashes between this type of tourism

and the spiritual and sacred places that are being harmed by it. A lot of the places have been untouched and now are seeing drastic changes as they change to a touristoriented society. Pat used the Sherpas of Everest as an example, saying that back in the 80s when he climbed Everest the Sherpas were goat-herders trying to earn extra money by leading mountaineers into their sacred mountains. Fruit of the vine finds favour in taste trials CASSANDRA CHIN Advertiser Reporter

Amidst the swirling glasses of wine and people chattering, the 20th annual wine tasting event in Grand Forks was a success. Hosted in Gallery 2 in Grand Forks, there were 11 wineries and two specialties: a brewery and spirits this year. Dawsha Hunt, one of the organizers, said the wine tasting is a fundraiser for the Grand Forks Art Gallery Society. “We’re pretty pleased that we’re able to keep it going that long,” she said. “It

started off very lowkey and small to be quite a monster.” Along with the 11 wineries and two specialties were other treats as well. “We also prepare many treats and sweets (for the event), which we’re quite well known for,” said Hunt. All the wines are local B.C. products, explained Hunt. “We’ve thought in the past to go to some international products and we may go that way in the future, but for 20 years it’s been all B.C. products,” she continued. Skimmerhorn Winery and Vineyard, was delighted to be there.

“What everyone says about the event is true,” said Silkie.

“It’s well attended and I’m delighted to be here.” Both floors of Gallery 2 were decked out in decorations and hosted many wineries and local food producers. “We decorate this place from top to bottom in holiday finery, including a 15-foot tree so it’s kind of our kick off to the season,” stated Hunt. “It’s a chance for people to get really swanked up, we have tuxedos and ball gowns, but it’s also okay to be casual.” This is the largest fundraiser that the Art Gallery Society hosts.
