Part of a weekly look at items of local interest selling on eBay. Another lovely stock certificate from the Lardeau sold last week for $90 US. The stock from the Huron Gold Mining Co. for 1,000 shares was issued to John Klatters on May 8, 1900 and was signed by secretary Samuel P. Halls and president James T. Garrow, a lawyer who represented Huron West in the Ontario legislature from 1890 to 1902. He was also reeve of Goderich, a small town off Lake Huron, from 187480, and later became a judge. His home still stands in Goderich and is on Canada’s historic places register. Halls was a teacher and principal. According to Henderson’s British Columbia Gazetteer and
Directory of Mining Companies for 190001, the company was incorporated a couple of months before the stock was issued with a capital of $1.5 million. Its head office was in Goderich, while a branch office was in Rossland. Other members of the executive were vice-president George Acheson — a builder whose home in Goderich also on the historic places register, and managing director W.H. Jackson. The company had four claims collectively known as the Fish Creek group, about which not much is known. The stock’s seller was in Orilia, Ontario. • A nice envelope from the Edgewood Cash Grocery postmarked 1944 sold for $34 Cdn last week. Next up was Craig Korth, Julie Kerr and the Occasional Offspring, with Korth moving back and forth between banjo and guitar, Kerr, his wife, accompanying on country and bluegrass vocals and their two daughters, Ella and Amy, on banjo and fiddle. Gifford played a huge bass. Heavy Shtetl, a band comprising Catherine McGrath on accordion, mandolin and vocals; and Anneke Rosch on trombone, trumpet,

vocals; Nicola Everton on clarinet; and Michael Gifford on tuba. Lyrics and music delved between Yiddish, Russian, French and German. Dancer Slava Doval got the audience up and dancing with a circle dance. The Cattle Annie and The Crooked Corral wrapped things up with western swing, bluegrass and classic country. Anneke (Cattle Annie) Rosch was on accordion and vocals; Catherine (Cactus Kate) McGrath on mandolin and vocals; Genie (Gin Jeanie) Sittig on fiddle; Craig (Ranger Craig) Korth on banjo, guitar and vocals; and Michael (Gut Bucket Giff ) Gifford on string bass, washtub bass and vocals. The night finished off with most of the audience on their feet, dancing to the western swing.

Five nominated for Queen’s medal NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser
Two former Regional District of Central Kootenay chairs and two former directors are among the nominees for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal. New Denver’s Gary Wright, who chaired the board from 200410, and Ymir’s Hans Cunningham, who did the same from 1993-2004, were both endorsed for their “long and exemplary service� to the RDCK, province of BC, and their communities. Cunningham is still a director, while Wright recently retired and is writing a political memoir. Also nominated are Corky Evans, John Voykin, and Geoff Yule. Evans served as the RDCK’s Slocan Valley director in the early 1980s before running for provincial politics.
He was Nelson-Creston MLA from 19912001 and 2005-09. Voykin, a Pass Creek resident, recently retired after 31 years representing rural Castlegar, making him the longestserving director in the regional district’s history. During that time he also served as vicechair and was the founding chair of the regional hospital district. Voykin actually received his medal at a banquet in his honour Saturday in Brilliant. Yule, a Castlegar accountant, is a Rotarian, soccer coach, and has travelled to Honduras and Bolivia with the Stanley Humphries Secondary Interact Club. He’s also been an active member of the Castlegar Aquanauts. The nominations came at the request of MP Alex Atamanenko, who put out the LET’S KEEP OUR WORLD GREEN!

Earth Day has influence in Grand Forks CASSANDRA CHIN West Kootenay Advertiser
Last month residents in Grand Forks celebrated Earth Hour, while this month looks at celebrating the environment for a day on April 22, Earth Day. Though there are no formal events taking place, the City of Grand Forks has been environmentally conscious and is making changes to stay sustainable. Hal Wright, man-
ager of city operations, explained that there are several initiatives taking place. “The City has undertaken a partnership with Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) on the pilot project for the kitchen organics diversion from the landfill,” he said. “The kitchen organics is a very popular program in one of our subdivisions (Valmar) it was piloted in.” Wright noted that the program has been
quite popular and they are hoping to expand it city-wide. “We’re coming up to the end of the pilot project phase and there are decisions being made with the co-ordination with the RDKB,” he said. On April 21, Wright pointed out the city will also partner with the RDKB for Trash to Treasure day. “This allows the public to put articles out on the curb for someone else to pick up for free,” he added.
The City announced last month that greenhouse gas emissions had dropped from 420 tons to 330 tons, based on figures from 2010. “We haven’t really planned anything in particular, but I think the city is very environmentally conscious,” concluded Wright. “We’re working towards carbon neutrality and there have been some good strides made to reduce the use of certain utilities.”

In 2010, more than one billion containers were recycled. That’s approximately 365 million aluminum cans, 355 million plastic bottles, 215 million glass bottles, 82 million drink boxes and cartons, and 10 million other containers of varying types. “One billion containers weigh around 97,000 metric tonnes. That’s about the size of an aircraft carrier,” adds Encorp’s President and CEO, Neil Hastie. “Imagine if our landfills had to accommodate that in addition to everything else that’s thrown out.”

First established in 1994, Encorp created a network of provincewide recycling depots to ensure soft drink containers were recycled. The system expanded in 1998 when the provincial government expanded the recycling regulations to include water, juice and alcohol containers. Today, consumers pay a deposit on all ready-to-drink beverage containers sold in BC, except for milk. Encorp’s Return- It Depot system collects containers from consumers and returns them for recycling on behalf of more than 1,000 beverage brand owners. “When Encorp first started, we were recycling about 300 million containers. Over the past 16 years, that number has just kept growing and growing,” says Hastie.
Encorp is 100% industry operated and receives no government funding. They combine private sector efficiencies with a high degree of public sector transparency to manage collection and recycling programs. The model shifts responsibility for managing end-of-life products and packaging from local governments and taxpayers to producers and consumers. We don’t ship electronics to developing countries for recycling he electronics stewardship program now includes even more products. Consumers and businesses in British Columbia have an environmentally sound recycling option. You can drop off any acceptable products at designated Collection Sites throughout the province without charge (see “Acceptable Products” list for details). The Electronics Stewardship Association of British Columbia (ESABC), a notfor- profit extended producer responsibility program set up by the major producers and retailers of electronics in British Columbia, delivers a recycling program to recover regulated electronics products from consumers and recycle them in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. Encorp Pacific (Canada) has been contracted by ESABC to manage the electronics stewardship program. You probably know them best through their Return-It system. Since the start of ESABC’s program in 2007, more than 49 million kilograms of unwanted electronics have been recycled. That’s over 49 million kilograms that didn’t end up in our landfills and were not exported illegally to become someone else’s problem.

How Electronics Are Recycled: Electronics collected in BC are sent to five approved primary recyclers in North America. The items are broken down using various manual and mechanical processes. Products such as batteries and mercury lamps, which require special processing to recover materials, are removed. The remaining products are separated into their
individual components for recovery. Through a variety of refining and smelting processes, the materials reclaimed from unwanted electronics are used as raw materials in the manufacturing of new products. It’s the Responsible Thing to Do: Those useless electro ics in your basement contain valuable resources. Steel, leaded glass, copper, aluminum, plastic and precious metals can be extracted and recycled into new products. Province Wide Network: The 112 permanent Return-It Electronics ™ Collection Sites cover over 97.4% of the province. Drop-off events are organized and held in convenient locations in the communities where depots have not yet been established. Ticks: small but potent forest residents well worth avoiding

new, but the lowly tick has the ability to destroy lives. As well as being an unpleasant pest, a
bite from one species of the bug can bring on what’s known as Lyme Disease. Much controversy
over the correct diagnosis and treatment of the disorder continues. The symptoms can be varied and se-
rious. Lyme Disease is definitely not to be taken lightly. Being aware of the threat is always the
first and best step in learning how to deal with it. Rather than giving up on spending time in the outdoors,
here is some helpful information that can help you steer clear of the bugs.
Tick Tips courtesy of HealthLink BC Lyme disease takes its name from where it was first identified: Lyme, Connecticut. It is the most common tick-borne disease in North America. It can cause serious, long term disability if left untreated. Early antibiotic treatment is essential, so identification of the disease in its early stages is very important.
FOR RECYCLING YOUR MILK CARTONS
Recycling your milk containers is easy. Simply give them a quick rinse and bring them with your bottles and cans on your next Return-It Depot trip. There’s no refund because you didn’t pay a deposit when you bought the milk. Last year Return-It collected over 630,000 kg of milk containers for recycling and kept them out of landfills. Help us recycle even more.

“Lyme diseasecarrying ticks are less common in the Interior of B.C. than on the coast; however, our residents do travel around the province, so it’s important they are aware of the signs of Lyme disease,” said Dr. Karin Goodison, Public Health Physician with Interior Health. “Approximately 70-80 per cent of people newly infected with Lyme disease will develop small red bumps at the site of the tick bite within several days. The redness then spreads out into a circular rash eventually resembling a target or “bull’s-eye”. Individuals who experience this rash should see their doctor as soon as possible.” Fortunately, Dr. Goodison adds that most tick bites do not result in illness. If you find a tick on your skin, you will need to remove it as soon as possible. Check your whole body and clothing. Do not stop when you find one tick. There may be more. Make sure the lighting is good, so you do not miss seeing the tick(s). If you can not reach the tick or see it clearly, get someone else to remove the tick for you or get your health care professional to remove it.

Larry Gray said there is a further $5 million worth of work that needs to be done this year to diminish the chance of a forest fire spreading into settled areas within the three Kootenay regional districts. But now having to cough up over $1 million between the regional districts of Central Kootenay, Kootenay Boundary and East Kootenay after the province
changed the rules of the game is not feasible, he said, even if it means nearly $4 million in fuel mitigation grants from the province. “We qualify for the grants, we have been approved for the grants, but we can’t afford the grants,” Gray said. “We can’t afford the grants because we don’t have enough money; and to raise the taxes to cover that is a huge, huge amount.” Last month directors from the three Kootenay districts met with Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson on what could become a huge problem if the districts are unable to continue with forest fire mitigation. In recognition of National Volunteer Week (April 15 to 21), ICBC is thanking the 10 volunteers in Castlegar for their continued support in making the community safer for everyone. Throughout the Southern Interior, over 480 volunteers spent more than 18,000 hours delivering road safety pro-
grams in 2011. “It’s amazing to see so many British Columbians volunteer their time and come together to better their own communities,” said Kevin Falcon, Minister of Finance. “National Volunteer Week is a great opportunity for all of us to express our appreciation for their tremendous commitment to road safety

With the support of volunteers, speedrelated crashes have steadily decreased in B.C. over the last five years. Volunteers use radar and speed-reader boards supplied by ICBC to
show drivers how fast they’re actually traveling. Research shows that it works – over 70 per cent of drivers traveling 10km/h over the speed limit slow down when they see a speed-reader board. Protecting the environment and recycling e-waste FOR SALE West Kootenay Advertiser
Every day is Earth Day at Teck Trail Operations. The smelting giant is now six months into a program to recycle end-of-life electronic waste in the Silver City, a $210-million investment that could see more than 39,000 tonnes of “e-waste” kept out of landfills each year. Trail Operations began recycling televisions, computers and other electronic items on a trial basis in 2006, and was designated as a reprocessing site when the B.C. program started up in 2007. After completing a $6-million feasibility study in 2010, the project received public approval at information sessions. The muchanticipated project, the largest at the Trail Operations in more than a decade, started this year with completion expected in 2014. Currently KC Recycling creates two waste streams for processing by Teck: crushed glass from traditional computer and television screens which contain 8-10 per cent lead; and the remaining components which are shredded with the steel, aluminum, copper and circuit boards are removed for processing elsewhere using a number of mechanical and manual sorting methods. Teck then processes the glass as it feeds into the Kivcet smelter and the e-waste bits and pieces from the shred go into the No. 2 slag fuming furnace. Slagfuming furnaces remove additional gold, silver and copper, as well as lead, zinc and nickel, while vaporizing wood and plastics to help fire the furnace. The addition of the new furnaces is expected to triple the company’s current capacity - approximately 13,000 tonnes of e-waste was recycled last year.
Teck minimizes environmental impact with a minor increase in some metal levels offset by no net increase in SO2 (sulfur dioxide). A minor increase in discharge levels into the Columbia River will be well within Teck’s existing permitted levels. More than six million Canadians join one billion people in over 170 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every school-aged child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity. The No. 4 Furnace Project at Trail Operations includes the construction of a new slag fuming furnace and settling furnace to be located in a building at the southeast corner of the property, overlooking downtown and the Columbia River. Reducing SO2 emissions further Teck is also investing $125 million in the installation of a new acid plant at Trail Operations, expected to deliver enhanced
in Warfield, where fertilizer products are produced. The construction of the new site, which will be located adjacent to existing acid plants in the middle of operations, will start this month and is ex-

Tip of the Week: The New Moon in Taurus occurs on April 21st. This generally has a stabilizing inuence and activates happier moods and attitudes. With Jupiter in Taurus as well there is additional reason to believe this will be the case this year as well. Taurus is linked to gardening, construction, investments of all kinds, establishing foundations, concentrating upon personal talents and acquiring possessions that are both beautiful and enduring. April 22nd is Earth Day. This now international event began in 1970. Some Astrologers believe that Taurus is the sign that is ruled by the planet Earth. This may be true but it is more likely simply confused with the fact that Taurus is an Earth Sign. In Astrology, the Earth is the planet that sits in the middle of the Mandala chart wheel because from the stand point of our perceptual and experiential reality, the Earth is in fact at the center of the universe. Of course we know the Sun is actually at the center of the Solar System, but we have never and never will experience the universe from its center for all obvious reasons. So, it may be said that both the Earth is and the Sun is at the center – yes both. Just like light can be both a particle and a wave, depending upon the perspective of the observer. It may be that by taking the earth out of the center of the universe we have developed the erroneous and dangerous attitude that it is simply ‘just another planet’. Take this time to pay tribute the element and the planet that we call Earth.

Canadians are living longer and costs for the Old Age Security (OAS) are rising. On April 1, 2023 the Government of Canada plans to start raising the age of eligibility for OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) from 65 to 67.*
What does this mean for you? 54 or older as of March 31, 2012
You may still obtain OAS/GIS at age 65
53 or younger as of March 31, 2012
The age of eligibility for OAS/GIS will change gradually between 2023 and 2029
Starting in July 2013, Canadians who are eligible for, but not yet receiving OAS will have the flexibility to delay receiving it in exchange for a higher monthly amount at a later date.
