Trail artist gives back - shows support for her church VALERIE ROSSI West Kootenay Advertiser
A Trail artist is donating her life’s work to raise money for a much-needed renovation at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Trail. Painter Catherine Wetmore has dug through her work that dates back to the 80s to pull together a collection of acrylic, watercolour and mixedmedium pieces to sell off for a good cause. “Having lived a great deal of my life near forests, tundra and water, I try to express in my paintings a connection with nature – one that is spiritual, magical and awesome,” she notes on her website (catherinewetmore. com). “I hope, within my images, to convey these expressions of the earth – a beauti-
ful world that needs cherishing.” The money made at the sale held April 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will go toward the $120,000 needed to improve accessibility – which will include the installation of a wheelchair lift – to the common room in the basement of the Trail church. “It’s a wonderful statement of her faith,” said churchwarden Michael Hargreaves. “The building was built in 1955 and at that time we just didn’t think about handicap access or things of that nature. It’s more a need these days. In fact, the demographics of Trail is much older than it used to be.” Wetmore holds the church very near and dear to her heart, noting that the architect who built it

Cities protest RCMP pay hikes JEFF NAGEL
A group of meat producers from around the Boundary region met on March 31 to explore next steps now the Mobile Slaughter Unit (MSU) is moving forward. A down payment was made and the unit is expected to arrive in Grand Forks this Fall 2012. This news made operation of a MSU in the Boundary a reality. But Bond is seeking more details. “I am deeply concerned about any potential impacts on our municipalities and that this information came as a surprise,” she said. Toews has said cities were advised months ago that raises on the order of 1.5 per cent were possible this year but neither the province nor cities were formally notified of the details of the compensation package. Fassbender said even if the pay hikes end up cost-neutral or better for cities, the lack of communication and consultation is deeply troubling, as
is the timing. “You just can’t plan this way,” he said. The province signed a new 20-year RCMP contract on March 21 – ending its threat to terminate the Mounties and form a new provincial police force – after securing extensive promises of more say for cities on spending decisions. Several cities have already ratified the new contract, including Surrey, Kelowna and the Township of Langley. Fassbender said cities that don’t sign by the deadline effectively give two years’ notice of withdrawal from the RCMP and
commit to forming their own police forces or partnering with existing municipal forces. “I’m still going to urge our council to sign the new contract,” Fassbender said. The new contract creates a UBCM-led committee with 10 civic reps who are promised much more hands-on control of spending changes, instead of just an advisory role. Cities that sign the RCMP deal can still opt out at any time on two years notice, and a review of the contract is promised every five years.

B.C. cities say they’ve been blindsided by surprise RCMP pay raises that the federal government enabled just as it was signing a new policing contract that was supposed to usher in a new era of trust and cost control. Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender has sent a letter on behalf of the Union of B.C. Municipalities to Public Safety Minister Vic Toews expressing “our complete shock and surprise” over the undisclosed pay lifts, which he warned will create “significant backlash” from councils and taxpayers. Fassbender, the UBCM rep in the recent contract talks, said cities don’t yet know how much more money – if any – they will have to carve out of their budgets to fund the higher RCMP payroll. Justice Minister Shirley Bond said she has been assured by Ottawa administrative savings totaling $195 million will partly flow to cities and could entirely offset the pay raises, and possibly even lower their costs.

The 30 farmers and interested folks who attended this meeting agreed on the necessity of infrastructure to be in place for farmers to be profitable. The infrastructure includes a cut and wrap facility, a marketing and sales outlet, the development of valueadded products like pet food and jerky, and a strong marketing plan. These proj-
ects need to be looked into so farmers get the most money from the animals they slaughter using the MSU. Some possible funding opportunities like grants and loans were presented to the group. There was a lot of discussion around docking stations and the workings of the MSU. Some concerns were raised about the ability of local farmers to provide a consistent year round supply of meat products. In order to develop a strong marketing plan and increase profits to
farmers the possibility of year round production of meat needs to be determined. Discussion ensued about forming a Boundary Meat Producers Society in order to move the operation of the MSU forward. Meat producers left this meeting optimistic about the future of meat production in the Boundary. The next meeting will be near the end of April and a great number of farmers stepped up to help. This is the first year the project has been organized in Trail, but both Castlegar & Nelson have participated in the past and Castlegar will host a display again this year on April 17. “The creativity of the women is incredible and they have really appreciated an opportunity to send a message to the community about the need to end the violence against women,� commented Gayle Ghosh, outreach worker at the Transition House who, along with Godderis, helps to facilitate the Tuesday afternoon Women’s Weekly Drop-In Group. “We’ve supplied paints, brushes and T-shirts and the women have taken it from there! Each T-shirt is unique and sends its own special message about the issue. � Other groups of women in the com-
munity are also creating T-shirts. As well, family, friend and workers who are exposed in some way to the impacts of violence against women are welcome to contribute their own ideas and images. Paints and T-shirts are available at the Trail FAIR Centre for anyone interested in creating a message on a T-shirt. Godderis adds “We’ll also have a table, paints & T-Shirts available on the 16th for people who want to add to the display.� In April each year, communities across British Columbia observe Prevention of Violence Against Women Week, a time to focus on a crime that, Statistics Canada reports, is experienced by one out of every four adult women in Canada at some time in their lives. According to Statistics Canada, in an average year, 20,000 women in B.C. will
experience violence. Almost half of these women have children who will be exposed to the violence as well. Peter Jaffe, a well-recognized researcher in Childhood Education at the University of Western Ontario, estimates that three to five children in every classroom have been exposed to violence against women. Women may experience extensive physical abuse, sexual assault, psychological trauma, financial hardship, and even death. In fact, a study by noted Sociologist Jillian Riddington, revealed that more women are injured or killed by physical abuse than by automobile accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. Yet many people underestimate the seriousness and impact of the crime. Godderis is confident that “If more people can recognize and speak out
against violence against women, we have a better chance to increase women’s safety and hold offenders accountable. Knowledge can help communities support women, youth and children who experience violence and prevent tragedies. New Democrat MLA Katrine Conroy is urging the Liberal government to take immediate action on the shortage of anesthesiologists at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital. Conroy, the MLA for Kootenay West, has written a letter to de Health Minister Mike de Jong, expressing concern that one of the hospital’s anesthesiologists has resigned, which will leave just three when the full complement at
the hospital is five. “This shortage continues to take a toll on existing medical staff and will increase waitlists for care,� wrote Conroy, noting that the problem at KBRH is exacerbated by the Liberal government’s inability to agree with the provincial anesthesiologists’ society. “Your government has known for years that there is a very real challenge with recruitment of anesthesiologists to rural areas of the province,� wrote Conroy. “Also your gov-
ernment has known for more than three months that the anesthesiologists would withdraw services if their concerns were not addressed. Yet with less than a week to go before that deadline, people in my riding, and the rest of B.C., have no assurance from your government that health services won’t be further compromised.� De Jong told media that contingency plans include using nurses instead of anesthesiologists or flying patients to Alberta

News Runoff will test preparedness
Trail Briefs Lord willing and the creek don’t rise is the state of the union in the Beaver Valley. Even though the heart of spring runoff is still one month away, eyes are beginning to turn to one of the region’s trouble spots for flooding: the Beaver Creek. The recent rains have swelled the waters of the creek as it makes its way through the village down to the Columbia River, putting creekside folk into a wary state of existence. Historically the creek jumps its banks on properties that border it — including Creekside Community Park in Fruitvale — in mid May, but the current height of the creek isn’t a concern just yet, said Village of Fruitvale chief administrative officer, Lila Cresswell. “About this time of the year we get a bit of a rise due to rain and low level snow melt,” she said. The weekend rains likely brought some flash flood issues, said Dan Derby, deputy regional fire chief with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, but so far nothing has been reported. He said it was important for people to monitor their own drainage systems right now, as well as catch basins, to make sure they are clear. “We live in an area that is prone to some low level flooding in some parts of the region, but in saying that, it doesn’t happen every year,” he said. “That could change in the coming weeks depending on the weather. However, at this point we are not very concerned.” Airport data says Trail service more reliable than Castlegar
Improving air accessibility remains a top priority for the
region –whether it’s out of Trail or Castlegar, according to the chair of the East End Services Committee that governs the city’s airport. Kathy Wallace is reacting to reliability data collected at the Trail Airport recently presented to Trail council, which paints Pacific Coastal out of Trail far more reliable than Castlegar’s Air Canada service to Vancouver. In January this year, Trail sat at about 91 per cent reliable service while Castlegar slid to approximately 74 per cent; February found Trail reached 83 per cent reliability and Castlegar sank to 69 per cent. “I think that our Trail Regional Airport is providing a needed service in the area and you can see that by the passenger numbers,” said Wallace. “I also know that Castlegar is working on improving their reliability and we’ll probably see something happen there in the next year, I’d expect.” Castlegar councillor Russ Hearne questions the accuracy of the figures, as he said the airlines operate under completely different regulations when it comes to safely departing or landing. “Through their own policy, Air Canada ceiling heights add, I believe, a killometre of visibility as well as 100 feet of ceiling height on top of what the minimum standards are,” he explained. “We’re certainly not happy with the ceiling limits that they have to operate in and that’s why the city is working hard on improvements.”

It featured an ad for Western Monarch Coal, “mined from the richest part of the Drumheller lower seam” and guaranteed to be “a bright, clean coal beautifully prepared.” The blotter contains a spelling mistake: it should be Towler Fuel and Transfer, which operated on Stanley Street in the 1940s. There is reason to believe it was taken in West Kootenay, for an alternate version was published by William Rutherford of Nelson. Copies of the latter sold in 2003 for $21 and in 2007 for £26. The third, postmarked 1913, showed a man in a sturgeonnosed canoe holding fish, and sold for $79. The same photo ap-
pears on page 317 of Kootenay Outlet Reflections, where the man is identified as Chief John Alexander of the Lower Kutenai band. According to Nick Dosenberger Sr., Alexander “would sometimes bring my mother fish ... Mother paid him about $1 for a 14 to 15 pound fish. He would never, ever, bring a small fish.” The final card, titled “Eventide, Procter, BC” dated from the same era and also showed a man on Kootenay Lake in a canoe. It fetched $82. Held every second Thursday of the month in the library at 7 p.m., there is usually a guest-speaker who provides advice on what the best methods of pruning or planting plants are. Last month there was a demonstration on how to prune fruit
trees. Cheryl Ahrens, president of the Garden Club, stated the club was founded in 1996. “Everyone who is interested in gardening is welcome,” she said. “We learn about gardening, and we have speakers on how
to fertilize as well as identify weeds. We’ve also had talks about new shrubs that are out and about.” During the summer, members of the garden club go on tours of gardens around the community.
“In two weeks, on April 12, we’ll be going to Mariposa Greenhouses, where there will be a demonstration on how to plant in hanging baskets,” Ahrens added. Ahrens loves to grow vegetables and fruits, though her fa-
vourite fruit are the raspberries. “I love raspberries and it’s a joy to go out in the morning to pick out some raspberries and eat them with my granola or yogurt,” she said. “That and fresh green peas.” For a beginner, Ahrens believes that lettuces are easy to grow. “(Lettuces) come in such an assortment of colours,” she stated. “You can have beautiful red foliages, ruffly green ones, or even arugula. They grow very fast and are very rewarding for a new gardener.” There is a variety of ages in the Garden Club, from men and women, experienced and inexperienced. The club currently has 63 members, though not everyone attends all the meetings. There is no membership required, only an interest in gardening.

Nelson’s Shambhala Hall makes a great debut NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser
After many years of construction and renovations at Selkirk College, music program students were finally able to take the stage for the grand opening of the Shambhala Music and Performance Hall. “We’re happy to have a place for the students to perform. We’re really happy to be a part of it,” said Anna Bundschuh, one of the Shambhala
Music Festival’s producers. The hall held its official opening to donors on Wednesday night with a reception and performances from students and faculty. An event was also held on Thursday night which was open to the public. Bundschuh along with her siblings Jimmy Bundschuh and Corrine Zawaduk announced in October of last year that they would be contribut-
ing $75,000 to the project. The donation earned them a permanent place for the Shambhala name at the Selkirk Tenth Street Campus. “I’m just so touched and amazed,” said festival producer Zawaduk. “The sound quality is amazing. The lights are great. The quality of the performance was outstanding. I’m so pleased. It’s been a long time coming.”

With the Ministry of Education tying its funding formula to the number of students a district possesses, the situation is of concern if the number of students continues to dwindle. To make matters worse, school trustee Toni Driutti noted there were only 277 students enrolled in kindergarten this year. “It looks like we are going to enter into crisis here … that means those are the total graduates for the whole of the district,” she said. With the district losing 40 students from its graduating class within the next three years — and the number expected to rise to over 60 in the next decade — the enrolment situation

This is set for April 28. “It’s a small river,” Holden related with a chuckle, “a half dozen or so canoes can fill it up.” The following month, on the 19th to be exact, the Columbia will be the thoroughfare – starting at the Robson boat ramp and going as far as First Street. Other functions including the Renata Regata in Lower Arrow Lake are upcoming as well. Dennis Holden plans to promote each of these dates as they draw near. He says the ideal way for a newcomer to get involved is to simply show up at the marshaling area, introduce themselves, sign a waiver and join in the fun. For now, in these early days, anyone with a hankering for this sort of enjoyment can give Dennis a call, at 250-365-2715.

At Castlegar City Council meeting on April 2, councillors approved the closing off and sale of a portion of Wood Street to the property owner of 330 Columbia Avenue. The new property owners of the Marlane Hotel have indicated that their ultimate goal (2-3 year plan) is to renovate the upper floor into 4-5 apartments, keep the remainder as ho-
tel units and turn the main floor into a restaurant and beermaking facility for consumption on site. “What they needed was three more parking stalls to meet the requirements,” said councillor Kevin Chernoff. “They had to amend their zoning. We had some land that was adjacent to it that we weren’t using that we can’t see any other use for it other than parking. This is the lots in the side alley not the main street.”

The Nelson chapter of Crime Stoppers handed out a couple of certificates of appreciation on Tuesday afternoon at the Nelson Police Department headquarters. Jack Fisher and Eric Nygren of Crime Stoppers stopped by to present the NPD chief Wayne Holland and volunteer coordinator Sarah Hannah with certificates. Holland called the program ìinstrumentalî in community policing efforts in the area. Hannah is winding up her time with the organization as she is the NPD’s latest recruit and will be taking six months to train to become a police officer. For Kendra Wayling, who graduated from Mount Sentinel in 2007, playing university volleyball is all about teamwork and sacrifice. Wayling was rewarded for her strong effort throughout the season by winning the University of British Columbia Okanagan’s (UBC-O) Female Student Athlete of the Year.
“I think it was because I had to be so versatile this year and help our team at many different positions,” she said. “The fact I was able to do that, a lot of people were impressed. She usually plays middle, but an injury to the Heat’s regular setter forced her into playing setter for much of the season. “It was our first year in CIS (Canadian Interuniversity
Sport), the university league,” she said. “It was a very big year for us. It was a lot of fun. We did a lot better than most people thought we would. We won six matches.” Wayling said the adjustment from the B.C. college league to the CIS was challenging but enjoyable. “It was a lot harder than it’s been in previous years but it was fun to play at that level,” she said. “The change in the level

She went to Stanley Humphries in Castlegar in grades 8 and 9 and then moved on to Mount Sentinel in South Slocan to play for the strong volleyball program.

This proven technology, by which a steel core is plated with alternating layers of different metals such as copper, nickel and brass, employs far less metals than alloy coins and produces highly cost-effective circulation coins. The Mint’s ability to control the plating thickness of each metal layer also provides greater flexibility in controlling electromagnetic signatures. This makes the security of MPPS coins superior to nonplated alloy coins of the same dimensions. Thanks to the superior advantages of its patented technology, the Mint’s Winni-
peg facility has been producing MPPS circulation coins for a growing list of international customers looking for the best combination of costeffectiveness, quality and security. Sneak It In Week encourage Canadians to move more A recent survey commissioned by ParticipACTION found that 88 per cent of employed Canadians spend time at work on personal activities such as checking Facebook, making personal calls or chatting with colleagues, yet only 17 per cent make time for a physical activity break. To help encourage Canadians to move more at work and in general, ParticipACTION launches Sneak It In Week, which runs this year from April 9 to 13, to help Canadians sneak in short amounts of physical activity during the day. “If you can fit in a coffee break, you probably have time to sneak in physical activity too,” says Kelly Murumets, President and CEO of ParticipACTION, the national voice of physical activity and sport participation. “A short activity break can actually count towards the recommended level of physical activity per week adults require for health benefits.” According to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, adults need 150 minutes of heart-pumping activity per week, but this does not have to be done all at once. Research shows that even tiny bouts of physical activity—as little as 10 minutes at

Benevolent effort underway for Burmese family Regional Briefs A group of volunteers in Rossland is working to bring two Burmese families to the town. overtime laps, in what was a stunning finale. The team will be playing to keep up the unbeaten streak that they managed all of last season. League president Michelle Sylvest said there are a number of changes for this year. For one, the league has expanded the number of games to 26 this year. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve also added two new teams: Trail Bad News Betties and the Slocan Valley Vendettas will officially join the fray this year. Last year they played, but the games were only exhibitions. Sylvest, who plays
for the Betties, suspects there will be some interesting rivalries this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have some competition from the teams that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t end up playing all season,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll bring the level up for everyone.â&#x20AC;? Nelson will be hosting the Western Regional Championships this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pretty big season,â&#x20AC;? she said. The teams began training in January, but Sylvest said a lot of the teams keep up practice over the course of the off-season, from September
to January. Her Mount Sentinel team won Provincial bronze in her grade 11 year, and then won gold at Provincials in her senior year. The school also won gold at basketball Provincials as well.
â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were ranked number one for volleyball, so we were expecting to win,â&#x20AC;? said Wayling. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But it was still exciting. For basketball it was more competition, so it was pretty exciting to win it.â&#x20AC;? After graduating

power down there, so it was a different position than Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m used to. I liked it.â&#x20AC;? She enjoyed her time down south but after tearing her ACL near the end of the season and having surgery, she returned to Canada. She is enjoying her studies at UBC-O, where she is taking arts and psychology courses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love it,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kelowna is a really nice city. I really enjoy my classes and my professors.â&#x20AC;? Wayling is currently finished up final exams at the school and plans to return next year. She expects the team to be much improved as they head into their second year at the CIS level. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love my team,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My team is the best. Steve (Manuel) is just an awesome coach. My team has a lot of chemistry. We get along really well and have a great time together. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really, really happy. I think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be really good next year. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re bringing in some really good recruits and we were pretty young this year so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have some experience playing at the CIS level.â&#x20AC;?
