AMNA GHANEM, CRANE OPERATOR
Plunging into a Male Dominated Career AMNA GHANIM PREFERRED TO WORK IN A NEW FIELD RATHER THAN OCCUPYING ONE OF THE MORE TRADITIONAL OFFICE JOBS LIKE MANY OF HER PEERS.
For she spends her day inside the control room of semi-automated Station 3, with her main tasks as a crane operator involving moving containers from cargo ships to the port. The crane that Amna operates, which is 50-metres off the ground, has to move 35 containers in one hour. Naturally, this requires extreme care and precision, as well as the ability to take immediate decisions, as she is not only responsible for the cargo she moves, but also the lives of the people beside the containers. Amna says: “I was terrified when I first operated a crane, as I had never worked so high up from the ground before. Despite this, I felt highly accomplished after I finished my first task.”

Enabling women is one of the main components of the sustainment strategy adopted by DP World, which believes in the valuable role of women in all aspects of life. DP World has made it possible for women to join fields that were, until recently, exclusive to men. It has also given them a chance to participate in the development of the company by following a policy of equal opportunities, diversity, sharing, and equality. “I feel proud witnessing the growing number of Emirati women rushing to work in the port” says Amna.
“I FEEL PROUD WITNESSING THE GROWING NUMBER OF EMIRATI WOMEN RUSHING TO WORK IN THE PORT” Now Amna feels proud of what she has achieved so far, and is looking to inspire other young female Emiratis to start new and unique careers, explaining: “My choice of work had invoked the curiosity of those close to me, as they believed that women were unable to succeed in this field; however, I proved quite the opposite and managed to fulfil all my duties in the best way.”
