WWe’re now just a few short weeks away from the highly anticipated liveaction remake crash landing in UK cinemas on 21st May, and it’s fair to say excitement has reached fever-pitch levels. 23 years after the original animation graced our screens, the movie is shaping up to smash box-office records.
Disney released the official trailer for Lilo & Stitch in March, at which point excitement for the movie soared. Fans were thrilled by how faithful to the 2002 classic the film looks set to be (even ice cream man is in it!), cooed over Disney’s very fluffy, very adorable CGI Experiment 626, and were delighted by the chaotic, adventurous scenes, all of which were set to an interpretation of Mark Keali’i Ho’omalu and Alan Silvestri’s “He Mele No Lilo” from the first film. While early images and teasers certainly looked promising, the full trailer – which has become Disney’s second most-watched live-action trailer to date, second only to 2019’s The Lion King - doubled down on Disney’s intentions to stay true to Stitch’s (extra-terrestrial) DNA while also catering to a new, much younger generation of viewers.
Written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes, and directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the visionary behind Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, the movie stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo and Sydney Agudong as Nani, while Chris Sanders (who co-wrote and co-directed 2002’s Lilo & Stitch alongside How To Train Your Dragon’s Dean DeBlois, and most recently directed the criticallyacclaimed The Wild Robot) reprises his role as the voice of Stitch, a move fans had been vocally demanding ever since rumours of a remake first started circulating. The film also stars Zach Galifianakis as Dr. Jumba Jookiba, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley, Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena and Tia Carrere as social worker Mrs. Kekoa.
Over the past couple of years, Stitch has firmly embedded himself in public consciousness (impressively, without the aid of any new entertainment content). While the announcement of the upcoming live-action movie certainly helped brand awareness along, it was ostensibly Primark that helped propel the property into the spotlight with its licensed apparel range based on the lovable blue alien. Although the clothing retailer has produced Stitch ranges since 2016, its January 2024 collection resonated with consumers as Stitch’s headstrong and impish yet lovable personality suddenly captured the hearts of countless fans’ like never before. A first look at the renegade alien was then revealed at Disney’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August 2024, before this year’s Super Bowl game saw a trailer featuring Stitch ‘crashing’ the field generate 173.1m views in 24 hours, making it Disney’s most viewed trailer digitally. Indeed, Stitch has been everywhere you look this year – and fans are loving it.
Elsewhere in Consumer Products, there’s been plenty of hype surrounding licensed toys, games and kids’ products, all of which have further propelled the franchise to even greater heights. The genre-defining hit, Disney Stitch Puppetronic by RealFX, saw creator Wow! Stuff make history by becoming the first-ever British toy company to win two TOTY awards in a single year, taking home both the coveted overall Toy of The Year and Tech Toy of The Year titles, while other licensees including Just Play, Ravensburger, Craft Buddy, Simba Smoby, Pyramid and many more have tapped into the property’s existing back-catalogue of artwork, as well as new brand messaging and assets, to bring a raft of new offerings to its rapidly expanding fanbase. The result, as the countdown for the new movie gets underway, is a smorgasbord of Stitch product that channels every ounce of the character’s incorrigible mischievousness and charm.

Ahead of the release of the live-action Lilo & Stitch, Gill Archer, VP Hardlines, Disney Consumer Products EMEA, and Nigel Cook, VP Brand Commercialisation & Retail, Disney Consumer Products EMEA, tell Toy World about the property’s impact on the global licensing and toy landscapes.
The moment is nearly upon us – the release of the live-action Lilo & Stitch movie. What’s it been like building up to this? When was the last time you recall this level of excitement and engagement for a movie?
NC: Stitch’s popularity has been building for over a decade now, with a significant ramp-up in the last two years. This has only been amplified by the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch release. From the initial announcement through to the latest trailer hitting 158m views within 24 hours, excitement is reaching fever pitch. Fans are eagerly awaiting Stitch’s return to our screens, which also presents
great opportunities in the product space.
It’s rare to achieve this consistent level of engagement across many different fan demographics. I would compare it to the hype we saw around Frozen 2, which created a similar frenzy from screen to store and beyond.
What is it about this property, in your opinion, that makes it so enormously popular with fans of all ages?
GA: Stitch's combination of cuteness and mischievous charm has a universal appeal that captivates fans of all ages. Our product strategy is centred around this sense of fun, ensuring that everything is reflecting the playful spirit
of the franchise. Toys, particularly plush, lean into this, and brands like Simba, Wow! Stuff and Just Play continue to innovate in this space and with the Stitch property.
Stitch also plays into Gen Z and Millennials’ love of nostalgia, as a character they associate with early childhood. He has become a firm favourite amongst Gen Z, and this has both trickle-up and trickle-down impact on other demographics.
NC: Social media has helped drive Stitch’s overall popularity among Gen Z. This is where we saw the organic growth of 626 Day into a worldwide fandom moment, and where these fans continue to pay homage to Stitch’s ethos of embracing individuality. In addition, the franchise connects with a wide range of audiences thanks to the heartwarming themes of family and acceptance.
We’ve seen a huge increase in officially licensed Stitch toys and games over the past 12 months, long before the arrival of the movie in cinemas. Is there still an appetite for it?
NC: Indeed - response from retailers has shown there is still huge appetite for Stitch, which only continues to grow. In the next few months, consumers can expect to see some of our most impactful retail activations featuring Stitch, from toy specialists to grocers and beyond – all alongside our own marketing campaigns, of course.
GA: Stitch's personality makes him exceptionally versatile, giving us the freedom to be creative and expand into new product categories. Whether across Collectibles, Games & Puzzles or Consumer Electronics, this diversification

The diverse range of products developed with our industry-leading partners ensures that Stitch remains sought after across all demographics – from kids through to Gen Z and adults. What new opportunities has the movie presented in terms of its licensing programme?
NC: The positive reaction to the upcoming live-action theatrical has reinvigorated licensees’ and retailers’ confidence to delve deeper into product categories, as well as expanding classic ranges. The new look and feel of the live-action film also means an opportunity for fresh inspiration and creative routes, and the potential for new collaborations.
How has Disney worked with its licensees to ensure Lilo & Stitch is brought to life the right way?
GA: We work closely with all licensees to ensure our characters are brought to life authentically, and Stitch is no exception. Any new product must be true to Stitch's character, whether it is inspired by animated or live-action creative. But it’s also important – particularly for such a vivacious character – that our licensees are able to have fun and unleash their own expertise and creativity. This approach has helped create some of the bestin-class Stitch product that fans know and love and has seen great success. I have really enjoyed being a part of their development and can’t wait for what’s to come.
With so many licensees wanting in on the Stitch action, how has Disney gone about managing its partners for this movie release?
NC: The benefit of a character with such multi-audience appeal is there are a plethora of ways for our partners to connect with Stitch fans in a meaningful and authentic way through product – ensuring they are both unique and true to consumer expectations.
What CP categories does the core licensing programme cover – are there any new categories Stitch will be making an appearance in for 2025?
NC: The core licensing programme for Stitch covers a wide range of categories, including toys, games, apparel, homeware, health and beauty. Looking ahead into 2025, consumers can expect to see Stitch’s presence grow in categories such as puzzles and card games, accessories and of course, refreshed seasonal newness.
GA: We are also constantly looking out for opportunities to strengthen fan affinity where there is existing demand for evergreen product. Some great examples are Funko’s incredible Stitch range, Wow! Stuff’s Disney Angel Puppetronic by RealFX and the newly announced Lego Angel model; all of which show the potential for expansion in ranges we know are proven winners.
Do you think it’s fair to say that, when it comes to toys, 2025 will end up being the Year of Stitch?
GA: I think it is fair to say that 2025 is already the Year of Stitch. The clearest example of Stitch’s commercial recognition is being named Circana’s Top Gaining Toy Property in Plush for Europe. That’s not to mention the incredibly prestigious Tech Toy and overall Toy of the Year Award wins for Wow! Stuff at New York Toy Fair, and Toy of the Year at the Toy Industry Awards.
We’re very excited by the positive reception of new liveaction-inspired product from the likes of Simba and Just Play, as well as new product inspired by animated Stitch, such as Lego’s Lilo & Stitch Beach House.
NC: There is tremendous demand from consumers and strong ongoing support from retailers and licensees, with ever more opportunities to be explored. We’re certain the movie will only bolster this excitement, and with the ongoing strategic expansion of our licensing programme into 2026, the momentum behind this franchise shows no signs of slowing down.

The new live-action Disney Lilo & Stitch is dropping this month, and as master toy licensee for the movie, Just Play UK has a host of Stitch-themed lines available now. To find out more, Toy World spoke with Amy Saunders, Country manager UK, on what’s in store and how Just Play will be supporting these new releases.
Tell us about Just Play’s journey with Disney Stitch…
Just Play began collaborating with Disney Stitch back in Q4 of 2022 with the introduction of the Disney Stitch That’s So Stitch figure capsules. The overwhelming demand for all things Stitch has led to impressive sales, with over 1.5m figures sold. Fans can’t get enough of these Stitch and Angel collectibles, each captured in iconic poses and packaged in themed blind capsules.
Since then, the Disney Stitch licence has skyrocketed – in 2024 it was named as Europe’s Top Gaining Toy Property for the Plush Supercategory (Circana) – and alongside this growth, Just Play has evolved its Disney Stitch offering to include feature plush, collectible figure sets, a Jumbo Mystery Capsule and more.
What’s in store for Just Play’s Disney Stitch range ahead of the big movie launch?
Just Play has a host of new Disney Stitch Live Action lines available now. Among the movie range is Disney Stitch
Many Moods Stitch Plush. This feature plush brings Stitch’s lovable personality to life with light-up, animated LCD eyes and over 50 sounds and phrases. Fans can scratch Stitch’s head to reveal his lovable side, rub his belly for playful antics or feed him when he’s hungry. They can even jiggle, tilt or hold Stitch upside down for reactions, but too much bouncing might make him grumpy. When it’s time to wind down, Stitch can be gently rocked to hear him yawn as his eyes close for sleep. Also landing in time for kids to take along to the cinema with them are the Disney Stitch Movie Time Blind Boxes, with seven to collect, each capturing an iconic movie moment. Ahead of the movie, fans can also expect fresh additions to the core Disney Stitch range. There are fun new formats for Just Play’s collectibles range, inspired by the mischievous alien’s antics. Disney Stitch Swirl-a-Stitch Clip-On Figures have been designed to add a dash of interstellar flair to a favourite backpack, purse, keychain or more.
There’s also the Disney Stitch Collectible Figure Set, which is ideal for play and display. It comes with six characters from the movie, plus a variety of accessories for tropicalthemed adventures. For something a little different that packs significant play value, the Disney Stitch Jumbo Mystery Capsule is a plastic moulded Stitch head which comes filled with figures, stickers and activities.
How will Just Play be supporting its new lines?
The launch of Many Moods Stitch and the wider Disney Stitch collection is high priority for Just Play, with a full 360-degree marketing campaign. This will include linear TV advertising, YouTube digital pre-roll activity, a comprehensive campaign across Meta and TikTok, impactful collaborations with parental influencers and Disney fans, as well as events and so much more.
What’s still to come?
There’s plenty more in the pipeline, and autumn/winter 2025 will bring even more additions to the Disney Stitch range by Just Play, including collectibles, role-play, dolls and interactive plush.

Stitch is back in sticker collection form in a new collection from Panini. Stitch fans can now collect all their favourite Stitch characters in an immersive scrapbook-style sticker collection. Fans can be creative by writing, sticking and drawing to jazz up their collection with playful and colourful stickers. There are even some special stickers to hunt down.
Launching in support of the upcoming live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, set to release in UK cinemas on 21st May, kids can fill and decorate their scrapbooks with thoughts and memories along with Stitch and his friends.
