We acknowledge that what we call Alberta is the traditional and ancestral territory of many peoples, presently subject to Treaties 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10 and Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta. We acknowledge the courageous and resilient community leadership of Indigenous leaders, of all ages. Knowledge Keepers, and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation, gratitude, and commitment to pursuing an inclusive, collaborative, and respectful path towards building strong communities.

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS
Hello my name is Ewan and I am a lifeguard/instructor at the Westlock Aquatic Centre.
I like teaching lessons because I always loved swim lessons and always wondered what it would be like to teach. Now that I am an instructor I LOVE IT!
My favourite things to do during lesson is games and teaching front crawl. My favourite games to play with my classes are CHOP CHOP TIMBER and BOMBS AWAY! I really love teaching at the Westlock Aquatic Centre and hope to continue for another couple years. I love all the kids I get to meet and teach during my lessons.
WESTLOCK AQUATIC CENTRE
PRESCHOOL LEVELS 1-5
Cost: $49.00 as per Fees & Rates Bylaw
The Preschool Program gives children a head start on learning to swim. Preschool programs develop fundamental physical literacy skills for aquatic activities. In our preschool program we work to ensure 3-5 year olds become comfortable in the water and have fun developing a foundation of water skills. We incorporate Lifesaving Society Water Smart® education in all Preschool levels.
PRESCHOOL 1
Preschoolers will be assisted by their instructor when learning to enter and exit the water safely, jump into chest deep water, and put their faces in the water to blow bubbles. Becoming comfortable with floats and glides and moving safely in shallow water while wearing lifejackets will help them gain confidence with their water skills.
PRESCHOOL 4/5 COMBINED (Ages 3–5)
This advanced preschool class is designed for young swimmers who are confident and independent in the water. In Preschool 4/5, children focus on improving their front and back swim skills, deep water entries and exits, and developing strong kicking and arm movements. They’ll practice rhythmic breathing, perform front and back glides with kick, and increase their swim distance. Safety skills like treading water, wearing a lifejacket in deep water, and helping others are emphasized. This combined class challenges preschoolers to refine technique and build endurance, all in a fun and supportive environment. Prerequisite: Completion of Preschool 3 or equivalent skill level. Child must be comfortable swimming independently without flotation aids.
PRESCHOOL 2/3 COMBINED (Ages 3–5)
In this combined class, swimmers build on their independence and confidence in the water. Children will explore underwater activities, learn front and back floats, glides, and kicking skills. We focus on safe entries, buoyancy, and movement while encouraging fun and comfort in the pool. With engaging activities and supportive instruction, swimmers begin developing foundational swimming techniques such as unassisted floats, basic propulsion, and rhythmic breathing. This class is ideal for preschoolers ready for more challenges while still needing a nurturing, play-based approach. Prerequisite: Comfortable participating in a group without a parent or guardian in the water. Completion of Preschool 1 or equivalent experience recommended.
WESTLOCK AQUATIC CENTRE
SWIM PATROL: ROOKIE/RANGER/STAR
Cost: $60.00 as per Fees & Rates Bylaw
Rookie Patrol: Rookie Patrol lays the foundation of the Swim Patrol program. It includes 4 main components: stroke refinement, fitness, first aid, and lifesaving. Stroke refinement is focused on front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. Fitness components include a 350m workout and a 100m times swim. Swimmers will learn about assessing conscious victims, contacting EMS, and treatment for bleeding. Rookie Patrol is rounded off with an introduction to lifesaving skills, including self-rescue techniques, victim recognition, and using throwing assists.
Ranger Patrol: Stroke refinement and underwater proficiency continues to be a focus in Ranger Patrol as it is critical for supporting swimmer fitness levels to increase as they work towards a 200m timed swim. First Aid at the Ranger Patrol level includes assessment of unconscious victims, treating for shock, and procedures for obstructed airways. Lifesaving skills are expanded to include object support and non-contact rescues with a buoyant aid.
Star Patrol: Star Patrol will prepare swimmers for the Bronze Star award. Strokes will continue to be refined through completion of 100m swims. It demands good physical conditioning as swimmers will be challenged with a 600m workout, 300m timed swim, and a 25m object carry. First aid in this level focuses on the treatment of bone and joint injuries and respiratory emergencies like asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include in water defense methods, rolling over and supporting victims in shallow water. Swimmers that complete Star Patrol will be well on their way to becoming bona fide lifesavers.
MEET THE INSTRUCTORS
Hi my name is Elizabeth. I am a lifeguard/instructor at the Westlock Aquatic Centre.
AQUAFIT
Enjoy a workout that is invigorating and refreshing, yet low impact. This class combines cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength to provide you with an enjoyable workout.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Drop-in rates apply. *subject to change due to lack of instructor
Being an instructor means I have the privilege to teach kids who see the value in learning a lifesaving skill. It is so rewarding to see the kids you teach catch on and develop into great swimmers with the help of your coaching. Any Preschool levels are my favourite to teach, these levels help kids learn the basics, and have fun while becoming confident in the water. I love being able to make their time in the water fun and memorable.

The Town of Westlock Aquatic Centre will be closed for annual maintenance starting September 2, with the shutdown expected to continue through the Thanksgiving long weekend (dates subject to change). HALLOWEEN
SAFETY TIPS
Halloween is a fun and festive time for kids and families, filled with costumes, candy, and spooky excitement. But with all the activity, it’s important to keep safety in mind to make sure everyone enjoys the night without any scares. A few simple precautions can go a long way in keeping trick-ortreaters safe.
· Wear bright or reflective costumes to help drivers see you at night and use face paint instead of masks to keep vision clear.
· Carry a flashlight or glow sticks for better visibility.
· Stay on sidewalks and always look both ways before crossing streets. Drivers, make sure to slow down and stay alert.
· Check all candy before eating—look for sealed wrappers and avoid anything homemade.
· Avoid open flames by using batteryoperated candles in jack-o’-lanterns instead.
· Keep candy out of reach of pets. Chocolate and many other treats can be toxic to animals.

WHEN WILL SNOW REMOVAL OPERATIONS START?
• A single event of loose snowfall greater than 100 mm
• A total compacted accumulation depth of snow 100 mm or greater
In any singular event with loose snowfall greater than 200 mm, we will focus on clearing the driving lanes, in order of priority, leaving ploughed snow in windrow form alongside the road in the curb lane. Windrows will be cleared after all the roads and lanes have been ploughed. For this type of event, the Town will supplement operations with contracted services.
Once started, a full snow removal cycle typically takes 12-days, excluding extreme temperature and weather events.
PRIORITY ROUTES AND SNOW ZONES
Priority snow clearing and snow clearing zones will determine which areas (zone) are being cleared first and in what order. Throughout the season, as snow removal continues, the order will rotate to ensure that the zone which was cleared first will become the last zone in the next rotation. This has been adopted to mitigate concerns that some areas are always cleared last.
MORE INFORMATION?
This winter, watch our social media for zone maps and up-to-date snow route removal. You can also receive transportation alerts through the Westlock Regional Notification System.
