Success in controlling Canada geese

Middlefield mill rate down in proposed budget

By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

After more than a decade of scaring Canada geese away from the hills and ponds of Lyman Orchards Golf Course in Middlefield, North Haven resident Alan Kendrix can frighten some of the birds away with a simple voice command.

“I just have to show up and stand on (the edge of ) the pond and go ‘hut, hut, hut,’” and the birds take to the sky, said Kendrix, whose business No Geese Today services four local clients in controlling resident goose populations, including the orchards and The Course at Yale in New Haven.

The Board of Finance adopted a nearly $17 million budget last week that would lower the mill rate in Middlefield by almost half a mill.

Much of his success lies in his persistence. He makes daily rounds to his clients’ properties, sometimes multiple times a day, with his two trained dogs, Kelly and Bear, the latter of

School budget meetings slated By Lauren Takores Town Times

Budget season is winding down, and there’s only the Regional School District 13 town meeting left before the vote. The RSD13 town meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday, May 7 at the Coginchaug Regional High School auditorium.

Residents of Durham and Middlefield who are eligible to vote in town meetings will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed budget for fiscal year 2018-19, as adopted by the RSD13 Board of Education.

Voting on the school budget is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 8 for Durham voters at the Korn school building, 144 Pickett Lane, and Middlefield voters at the Community Center, 405 Main St.

The question states, “Shall we accept the proposed budget of $36,819,319 for the 2018-19 fiscal year as prepared and presented by the Regional District 13 Board of Education?”

Durham and Middlefield residents vote on their respective municipal budgets on Monday, May 14.

At its April 26 meeting, the board discussed and approved $4,716,883 in town expenses, $12,148,247 in education expenses for a total of $16,865,130. The mill rate would be 34.49, a decrease of .47 mills. A property assessed at $160,000 would owe a tax of $5,518, an decrease of $75. Total revenue would be $2,739,900, a decrease of $250,556. The total to be collected by taxation would be $14,125,230, an increase of $226,191. Budget breakdown
