New principal gets started at Brewster elementary

Park pavilion gets makeover

By Everett Bishop Town Times

Debra Murray officially began her tenure as principal of Brewster Elementary School July 1. Murray comes to the Durham school after serving as an administrator in New Britain for nine years and as principal at the Abraham Pierson School in Clinton for one year.

The Dom Ferretti Pavilion at Peckham Park in Middlefield recently underwent some much-needed updates such as replacing the cedar shingle roof with a new metal roof and replacing the concrete pavers along the outside of the pavilion. The project started in April and has been ongoing the past three months.

Murray’s career in education started in teaching and, initially, she had no interest in being an administrator.

The town of Middlefield didn’t shoulder the entire cost of the project.

“The last principal I worked under really pushed me,” Murray said. “He was a great mentor and I was his right hand man.” Murray felt at home at Brewster as soon as she set foot in the school.

Murray. “I’m excited to build those individual relationships with all of the kids.”

Going forward, Murray said she’ll be focused on acclimating herself to the school and getting to know students. “Every kid is unique,” said

The new principal says she “valued all the experience” in the positions that she has held, even her year at the Pierson school in Clinton. The school closed due to a decline in enrollment. “When she started in Clinton, after she was hired they

The Lions Club constructed the pavilion back in 2003 in an effort to create “a common space to accommodate the outdoor social and athletic needs of our community,” according to its website. Middlefield Parks and Recreation director, Hannah Malcolm, she had “noticed stuff that needed to be changed.” This included the leaky roof and pavers that had begun to settle.

Damaged public works truck being replaced By Bailey Wright Town Times

In late-June, Durham residents voted to transfer more than $75,000 from the Public Works Vehicle Reserve to fund replacing a public works truck that was damaged in a one-car accident in March.

The purchase of a 2018 Ford F-550 was approved during a special town meeting on June 24, with little discussion and no obvious opposition in a voice vote. The new truck will replace a 2011 model which was deemed a total loss after an incident during snow re-

moval on March 4 this year. First Selectman Laura Francis said the driver was not injured. “Excessive may have been a factor, and so we took the opportunity to remind the employee about the importance of following the speed limits and we required him to go to a defensive driving course,” Francis said.

The National Weather Service Archives show a “winter storm” from March 3 to 4, with snowfall counts around 11 inches in the Durham area. Francis said she is proud of the town’s public works department and has confidence in each individual. At

She said the defensive driving course is one all the drivers take for refreshers on driving safety.

“If it was totally conclusive, then obviously there might have been stiffer disciplinary action, but it was not conclusive,” Francis said, adding that weather also could have been a factor.

During the Special Town Meeting, residents also approved the following: transfer of $4,763 from Cemetery Stone Repairs Reserve; $1,775 for the repair of historically significant grave marker repairs and $2,998 to Durham Cemetery Company Revenue. They also voted to join the Middletown Area Transit District, in accordance with provisions of the Connecticut General Statutes. COMMENTARY

So this color doesn’t look good on me? Dear Diana, Hello, Dearie. Your pool here. I received your letter, and I understand your angst. And for the record, I do know how much you love me. Right back at ya! It really is high time for me to be up and running, so I’m with you on that one. I am at my best when I am just churning away, with a thunderous jet stream, whirling you around and around. It feels like that is how life is meant to be lived. Being dormant for too long does not sit well with me. I get bored. That’s never a good thing. And I must admit, I love the joy that I give you. You could spend days

on end, I know, swirling around in my waters, reading your books and drinking your green tea. We make a good team. Alright, that being said, let’s address this issue of my “green,” which was my hue when you tucked me in for the winter. I must say, I thought it was a lovely shade, and contrary to popular opinion, I thought it looked good on me. But I know it is not my natural color. Or at least, it’s not supposed to be. I was thinking I should try azure blue or banana yellow or plum purple. You know, just to mix it up a little. But I wasn’t able to pull it off.

So there I was under the cover for those long winter months, and I got bored, so I decided to fiddle around with some colors. But all I managed to come up with is black. Sorry! I would have loved the plum purple. But seriously, I know how much you adore me, so I will try to get it together. I’ve just been having some fun with you, letting you think that we are all set, and then we’re not. Ha! Ha! Pretty funny, huh? But I think I will straighten up now and fly right. It makes

me too sad to see you all bunched up in that kiddie pool. I know that weensy pool is just not doing it for you. It’s going to take some time, though. My waters are so murky that I fear wildlife may appear, and I do not wish to be host to alligators and such. I have taken on, I know, a striking resemblance to the Everglades, and who knows what might show up. So I will stop playing games, and I will keep that jet stream nice and strong so that I can get all spiffed-up. So don’t give up on me. We’ll be together soon enough. I miss you, too. Yours Truly, Your Mischievous Pool
