Health Safety and Wellbeing

Early Reporting Matters: Supporting Safer Workplaces Together

The Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) team has noticed an increase in retrospective incident reporting. While it’s always important to receive reports — even after the fact — timely reporting offers significant benefits. It helps the injured worker by enabling quicker rehabilitation interventions and allows managers to address hazards sooner, preventing similar injuries to others.

Timely reporting is about care. Even if you’re unsure whether something is worth reporting, or think “it’ll be right,” entering it into the system helps us act early and reduce the risk of further harm.

We understand that workers sometimes hesitate — not wanting to bother their manager or unable to access a computer. But there are options: downtime forms are available on QHEPS, and supervisors can enter reports on your behalf. We would rather receive an incomplete report than none at all.

It’s well known that the sooner a worker receives support and returns to work, the better their recovery outcomes. Reporting early helps us help you — whether it’s arranging medical care, modifying duties, or simply checking in. Your wellbeing is our priority, and your voice matters. Every report contributes to a safer, healthier workplace for all.
