Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive Our family has also created the Community CHAllenge program, through which we raise awareness and support for local nonprofit organizations, ensuring that our blood drives can have an immediate and direct impact in the communities where they take place. For every unit of blood collected at the blood drive on May 10, we will make donations to DMAX Foundation, which is based in Radnor and works to eliminate stigma and encourage safe, caring conversations with young people about mental health issues and emotional struggles, and to Delaware County Special Olympics, which provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. If the blood drive collection surpasses last year's total of 131 units, we will double our donations to both groups.

To date, our blood drives in Radnor Township have collected enough blood products to help more than 1,300 transfusion recipients. We are grateful to the community in and around Radnor that has allowed us to honor Carol's memory by helping so many other patients and their families, and we look forward to seeing that number grow at our milestone fifthanniversary drive at this location on May 10! To schedule a donation appointment for the Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive on May 10, visit www.chablooddrive.org or call 1-800RED-CROSS (mention sponsor code "CHAMemorial"). For more information about supporting the drive by contributing refreshments or drawing prizes, email info@chablooddrive.org.

The Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive will hold its fifth annual blood drive in Radnor Township on Tuesday, May 10, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Radnor Township Municipal Building in Wayne. Carol Axelrod was a Main Line resident who became dependent on regular transfusions of blood and platelets while receiving treatment for multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood and bone marrow. The transfusions she received allowed her to continue to live independently, with good quality of life, and enjoy more time with family and friends. After Carol died, our family started holding blood drives in her memory as a way of "giving back" to the blood-donor community that had made it possible for her to receive all of the transfusions she needed during her treatment. Today, our mission is to help other patients and their families spend more time together by doing our part to ensure that blood products are always available for those who need them. Our goal is to help the blood donors at our drives have an enjoyable and positive donation experience. According to blood-collection agencies, approximately 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood, but only about 10% of those who are eligible actually donate. To help illustrate this, think of Citizens Bank Park. If every seat in the Phillies' stadium were filled, there would be 43,651 fans watching the game. Approximately 16,587 members of that fan population may be eligible to donate blood, but only about 1,658 of them actually would donate. Approximately every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. So if that Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park took three hours to play, during the game approximately 5,400 people would need a blood transfusion - and that is more than three times the number of eligible fans who would donate. It is important to us to create a warm, welcoming, and even fun atmosphere at our blood drives, and we are proud when we hear from donors that they have enjoyed donating with us, or that they intend to donate again whether at one of our drives or elsewhere - because they had a good experience at our blood drive. Our family saw first-hand what a difference blood donation makes to hospital patients and their families, and that is why it is so important to us that all of our donors leave our drives with the feeling that they want to continue to donate. As a special thank you, every presenting donor at the Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive on May 10 will receive a gift bag, free entry into prize drawings, and special refreshments.

Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors - Simple Steps Save Lives Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors save lives every day, but it's important to choose, install and maintain detectors properly. There are three major types of smoke detector systems. The safest system is an interconnected, hard wired, battery backed up system. If one detector activates, all detectors go into alarm. Interconnected wireless, battery operated detectors provide the same level of activation as hard wired detectors, but are dependent on batteries for primary operation. Many announce which detector is in alarm, which can help identify the problem area. Wireless detectors may provide additional functionality, based on connection to a home network and the internet. The most common system in older homes is stand alone, battery operated detectors. The downside to these detectors is related to battery problems, and the possibility that a distant detector (basement) might not awaken a sleeping family on the second floor, in the very early stage of a fire. Install smoke detectors on every level in the home and in every room outfitted for sleeping. They should not be installed within 10 feet of cooking or heating appliances or close to a bathroom door to avoid being set off by steam. They should not be installed near air conditioning or heating duct outlets or returns. Detectors installed in bedrooms should be within a few feet of the bedroom door and basement detectors should be close to the stairs. Detectors on a ceiling should not be less than 12 inches from a wall and detectors on a wall should be no closer than 12 inches to the ceiling.

If your smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector goes into alarm, you, your family and pets should leave the building and call 911. Do not re-enter the building or reset the alarm until the fire department has identified the problem. Remember that carbon monoxide is not visible and is odorless.

Test batteries every month using the test button and replace batteries at least once a year. Periodically clean detectors with compressed air or a vacuum and replace them when they are 10 years old. Read the manufacturer's instructions and the information on the back of your detector. Know the difference between a low battery beep, typically every 15 to 30 seconds, and an alarm beep, which is continuous. A carbon monoxide detector is required in every home and should be installed outside the sleeping rooms. More than one detector can provide a valuable increase in protection. The detector may be hard wired, usually in a combination smoke and carbon monoxide detector. Many are plug-in detectors with battery backup and an LED readout. Others are simple battery operated units. All of the maintenance precautions of smoke detectors apply equally to carbon monoxide detectors.

Air Quality Ozone Ozone, also known as “smog,” is a harmful pollutant that forms on the hot days of summer when there is bright sunshine and little breeze. Ozone pollution is particularly harmful to children because it damages lungs while they are still growing.

KNOW PROTECT YOUR HEALTH Exercise is important to a healthy lifestyle and especially important for THE FACTS growing children, but on days when the AQI reaches Code Orange or Code Red levels, parents should limit their children’s strenuous activities. The key to managing the negative effects of air pollution is to limit exposure to environmental pollutants.

Ozone is a particularly difficult problem for the estimated 140,000 children in the region suffering from pediatric asthma because ozone irritates lung tissue and constricts breathing passages, making breathing difficult and sometimes painful. Ozone exposure diminishes lung capacity and increases the likelihood of lung infections.

Encourage your school’s nurse or administrators to monitor the AQI and manage students’ activities accordingly.

PREVENT AIR POLLUTION

Fine Particle Pollution Fine Particle Pollution (PM 2.5), or soot, is made up of tiny particles of liquids, dust, and metals that can be breathed deep into the lungs. Particle pollution is especially dangerous for children because it can cause long-term damage to the lungs, increase hospital visits, and aggravate existing breathing conditions such as asthma.

Air Quality Index GREEN = good air quality YELLOW = moderate ORANGE = air quality is unhealthy for sensive groups; including older adults RED = air quality is unhealthy for everyone

By knowing the AQI, parents can be prepared for days when air pollution might aggravate breathing conditions or damage developing lungs. If a child has asthma or other breathing disorder, knowing the AQI may even prevent hospital visits or missed school days.

The Partnership uses the Air Quality Index (AQI), a common colorcoded scale, to communicate daily air quality conditions.

Preventing air pollution in the first place is the best way to protect the health of the entire community and the environment. Everyone can take a few simple steps to prevent air pollution, especially on days when air quality is poor.

Things we can all do! 1. Take public transportation 2. Save energy in our homes 3. Recycle

On poor air quality days, these actions are especially effective: 1. Carpool with your friends 2. Don’t use gas-powered lawn equipment 3. Avoid the drive-thru

Be Prepared for Summer Storms & Power Outages In recognition of National Electrical Safety Month this May, we would like to remind the public to be prepared for summer storms and power outages. Summer storms can cause electrical safety hazards on your property. Lightning, downed power lines, standing water and power outages are just a few serious safety concerns. To protect your family, follow these safety tips:

A: Stay away from all downed power lines, and do not drive over downed power lines. If you are standing near a line that falls down, shuffle away keeping both feet together and on the ground. If you are in a car near downed power lines, do not get out of the vehicle. Report hazard to PolkBurnett. Q: My basement flooded and there is standing water. Is it safe to go down there?

Q: What should I do if I'm caught outside during a lightning storm? A: Lightning strikes tall targets, so move to a low point and crouch down. Stay away from trees. Avoid metal objects (bats, golf clubs, fishing rods, tennis rackets, tools, ladders). And stay away from water (pools, lakes, puddles). Q: Am I safer in or out of my car during a lightning storm?

A: Never step into a flooded basement or building if water is covering outlets, appliances or cords. Never touch electric appliances, wires or cords while you are wet or standing in water. Never turn off power at the breaker box if you must stand in water to do so. Contact the co-op to shut power off at the meter.

A: You are safer in your car. Do not leave your vehicle during a thunderstorm.

Q: I bought a portable generator to be prepared for the next power outage. Can I plug it into an outlet?

Q: What should I do if I encounter a downed power line?

A: Do not connect generator to an outlet or home wiring unless a transfer switch has

been installed by a licensed electrician. Without a transfer switch, electricity can backfeed through the home to power lines, creating an electrocution hazard for linemen making repairs. Also, never operate a generator inside; this can result in carbon monoxide poisoning.

Newtown Square Public Library After he arrived, Ruth returned to painting, and chose to work in watercolors because she didn't want the solvents associated with other media in her home. Interestingly, when people would look at her watercolors, they would remark: "Oh, you paint in acrylic!" Ruth explained why everyone made that assumption: When people think of watercolors, they usually anticipate seeing a rather soft painting with a "washy" look to it. And since I liked more pigment, I always laid down very intense, defined colors which isn't what they expected. Then when I switched to acrylics, everyone said "Oh, you paint in oil!" This is because I use an acrylic medium, and less water in my colors. I also literally lay the paint on with a palette knife. So the work tends to be a little more vibrant, and glossier than most of the acrylic paintings you see. (When you just mix acrylic with water, it can look a little dull when it dries.)

Newtown Square Library Welcomes BioEngineer and Acrylic Artist, Dr. Ruth Ochia, throughout May!

If you were a student studying bioengineering at Temple University, you might enjoy taking one of Dr. Ruth Ochia's classes. She specializes in the biomechanics of human injury. But her expertise is not limited to the sciences. Her talents in the arts are well-known in the Delaware Valley, and will be showcased at the Newtown Square Public Library throughout May. Ruth's interest in art started back in middle school, but studies and preparation for her career kept that avocation in the background until her son was born in 2004.

Dr. Ochia enjoys painting a variety of subjects, but she is particularly drawn to landscapes and still life studies. Her works are popular, and the large painting called "The Farm at Howard Lake" (which is behind her in the photo) was one of two accepted at the Main Line Spring Gala exhibit. That Minnesota farm has been in her husband's family for generations, and she painted it from a photograph which is how many of

her landscapes come about. Treasured images captured on family travels often inspire full-blown paintings down the road.

Art is not scientific. It's not quantitative. But I can't imagine not painting! I love color and expansive, big canvases. It's emotional, creative, and fulfilling. And it balances me. Chanticleer - 2016 Season Opening Ring in spring at Chanticleer; enjoy new garden features and innovative spring designs Chanticleer is celebrating many new features in the garden this season. On opening day was Wednesday March 30th. Visitors are invited to enjoy the new accessible walkway. The walkway meanders from the top of the steep hill flanking the Chanticleer House down to the Serpentine Garden. Plantings, benches, and new vistas make it an exciting and practical feature. A stone seating area is nestled between the main path and the Ponds, providing a comfortable spot to observe the pond plants and wildlife. Staff-made wooden trugs will be used in the Vegetable Garden to carry harvested vegetables. An inspired Phlox stolonifera 'Sherwood Purple' blooms along a path that leads under Bell's Run Bridge

handrail, made by staff, will be useful for visitors as they move from the upper gardens around the pool, down the steps to the lower terrace lawn. Spring bulbs will interplay with delicate early blooming plants and ephemerals, all of which are a treasure in the garden because of their fleeting appearance and promise of warmer days. Chanticleer will be open Wednesday through Sunday until October 30th from 10am to 5pm, and will remain open until 8pm on Friday nights from Memorial Day through Labor Day. For more information and to plan your visit, please visit chanticleergarden.org. Defending Our Forest Dealing with the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Ash Tree Threat An unprecedented threat to our community forest has arrived in Montgomery County. Having already devastated forests in Michigan and throughout the mid-West, the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been inexorably moving east for several years, leaving millions of destroyed ash trees in its wake. This shiny deep green, half- inch long adult borer seeks out ash treesto lay its eggs. They develop into larvae which ravage the trees' tender tissue beneath their bark. The borer is a danger to our community forest because ash trees are common in home landscapes, parks, school and church campuses and commercial properties. Trees attacked by this borer have virtually a 100 percent mortality rate. Once a tree is infected, there is no way to save it. A lot of Pennsylvania Townships are developing a strategy to confront this menace and limit its destruction of trees on Township property. It is critically important for homeowners to also have a plan to manage this serious assault on ash trees on their private property. It is important to be pro-active, there is no time to lose. Responding to the EAB threat 1. Determine whether you have any ash trees on your property. If you are not familiar with what ash trees look like, (see picture inset) check the Internet for photographs and descriptions of ash trees. Or, ask a knowledgeable neighbor, a Master Gardener, a member of the township Tree Commission, or a professional arborist to help you identify your trees. 2. Develop a plan if you have one or more ash trees. Use a triage system: identify any healthy

ashes on the property that are important to the landscape; note other uninfected ash trees; then note any ashes that show signs of infection. 3. Immediately cut down infected, dying ash trees. Identify and cut down any infected trees as soon as possible. Do not wait for them to die, because ashes are brittle and rapidly disintegrate dangerously when they are dead. 4. Arrange for protection of your healthy ash trees worth saving. Wonderful big ash trees on your property that are healthy and contribute beauty, shade, wildlife shelter, air quality, stormwater control and climate moderation to your landscape, are worth protecting. They must be treated with insecticide before the EAB infects them. (See below) 5. Choose an option for handling small, uninfected trees. Since, over the next few years the borer will kill any ash tree not treated, you have really only two options for your other, less significant but healthy ash trees. Cut down your remaining healthy ashes now to avoid harboring the borer. They will eventually have to be taken down anyway. Or, wait for the borer to arrive and infect them, then have them removed. 6. Regularly monitor each of your ash trees over the months ahead for symptoms of EAB. Look for dieback of branches high in the canopy and new branch sprouts at the base of its trunk. Check the bark for D-shaped exit holes or bare spots where the bark has fallen away showing channels in the tissue made by larvae. Check trees where woodpeckers seem to be focused. Keep your eyes out for the shiny green, adult borer.

Protecting ash trees You must protect your larger healthy ash trees immediately, or you will eventually lose them to this borer. Consult a certified arborist about pesticide treatments available to prevent Emerald Ash Borer infestation. Insecticides must be applied before the trees are infected and must be renewed either yearly or every other year, depending on the product and type of treatment used. Some treatments involve drenching the soil or injections into the soil beneath the tree, others involve injections into the base of the tree trunk. Yes, having a large ash tree treated to prevent EAB will likely cost some serious money. However, not as much as having to have arborists come to take down a large tree that has died of EAB infection a few years from now. In that case further costs will involve losing the wonderful tree canopy that has protected your landscape, reduced your air conditioning bill and sheltered the wildlife that lives there. There will also be the cost of purchasing and replanting a young replacement tree. In some cases arborists will lower the price if several trees in small area are to be treated, so check with your neighbors to see if they are considering this option.

Historic Newtown Square Day WHAT IS HISTORIC NEWTOWN SQUARE DAY? Newtown Township was planned by William Penn as one of the first inland "new towns" in Pennsylvania. It has five sites on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as several others that are eligible for that listing. Each year we open these sites, and other historic sites, for tours and activities, as we celebrate over 300 years of history in Penn's New Town. Saturday, June 4, 2016: Our 21st annual Historic Newtown Square Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 4, 2016, with our public sites open from 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. for tours. Come out and visit some of the buildings that have been serving Newtown residents for the last 300 years: the 1711 Newtown Square Friends Meeting, the 1742 Square Tavern, the 1828 Paper Mill House & Museum, the 1860 Bartram Bridge, and the 1895 Newtown Square Railroad Museum. Added attractions this year: come visit the Latvian Church building, the barn at the Garrett Williamson farm, and the Delaware County Veterans Memorial honoring the men and women of our military services. Old St. David's Church: While Newtown was first settled by Quakers, the Church of England settlers were not far behind. They erected a stone church in the far corner of the township in 1715. This year, we celebrate the 301st anniversary of this wonderful old church building, and its cemetery which is the final resting place for generations of local residents, including Revolutionary War General "Mad" Anthony Wayne. 1742 Square Tavern: Benjamin West, Father of American Painting: Benjamin West (local artist Terry Jones) will be in residence at the Square Tavern on Saturday, working on his latest painting, "William Penn's Treaty with the Indians", and talking about his boyhood spent at the Tavern in Newtown Square, and his development as a painter. Be sure to stop in and watch the master at work. Activities on the Tavern Green: Outside of the Square Tavern, various vendors and other activities will be hosted bluegrass music, food, crafters, the 1st Colonial Regiment of Foot Revolutionary Soldiers, sheep shearing & blacksmith demonstrations, animals and more. Raffle Baskets: Our local merchants have donated an amazing collection of more than $3,000 in merchandise and gift certificates that we have divided into 14 different 18

baskets of cheer. Buy your raffle tickets and you choose which baskets you bid on. All items will be on display at the Tavern Green all day long. 1711 Newtown Square Friends Meeting & Cemetery: Newtown Square was settled by Welsh Quakers. They built an early meeting house at this site in 1711, and expanded it in 1791. You can still see the architectural "ghost" of the first building in the second. Come visit where Newtown Square residents have been worshiping for over 300 years. 1828 Paper Mill House & Museum: This area along Darby Creek was the 19th century version of an industrial park. Various mills powered by the water flowing from the creek ground our flour, sawed our wood, and made textiles and paper for export. And a whole community of workers lived there. In our local history Museum, we have recreated rooms from their homes, and an 1850 general store at the site, and the upstairs rooms have a variety of items of local history on display. Outside, the mill ruins remain to be explored. 1860 Bartram Bridge: The last remaining covered bridge in Delaware County, crossing the Crum Creek. Neglect and vandalism almost did the old bridge in, but history minded residents on each side of the bridge, in Willistown and Newtown, have raised money to keep the bridge in good repair. Gates keep out the vandals, but the gates open on this day so you can visit and see the inside of the bridge, the Burr Arch, and perhaps sneak a kiss out of sight of prying eyes, as lovers have been doing for over 150 years. 1895 Newtown Square Railroad Museum: Newtown was served by a passenger and freight rail line built in the late 1890's.

Passenger service was discontinued early on, but the "milk run" brought fresh milk from the Pennsylvania Farm to the Pennsylvania Hospital for much of the 20th century. The original freight house was moved from its site to the Drexel Lodge property, and a wonderful Railroad Museum has been created with engines, rolling stock, and great photos and fixtures that tell about Newtown's railroad history. The Latvian Church: Philadelphia's Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of St. John is the oldest Latvian Lutheran congregation in the United States. Come visit and tour their chapel building and attached social hall. Garrett-Williamson Barn: The local 4-H will show off their farm skills and animals at the Garrett Williamson Barn. A great stop for children of all ages! Delco Veterans Memorial: Delaware County has honored its military veterans with a beautiful granite memorial visible along West Chester Pike. Come out on the anniversary of "D Day" and meet some of those veterans, search the memorial wall and learn about the 12 Newtown Square men who served in the Civil War. Special this year: learn about the statue honoring "Wild Bill" Guarnere, one of the Band of Brothers, which will be installed at the Memorial in the fall. Learn more about his life from his son and granddaughter. Cost? Tickets are $5 for access to Tavern and Paper Mill House. All other sites free. Donations encouraged! The money that is raised supports education and preservation in the Township. A program book should be available at each site, with a map and more history on the sites that are open this year. Guides will be available to answer questions.

Tali Guy's Recipe Page - Strawberry Season These days, when temperatures rise and the scenery is green, there is an abundance of beautiful strawberries at relatively low prices in the produce department. Everybody loves strawberries at all ages. Strawberries are low in calories and are loaded with Vitamin C. Now is the time to enjoy them. Here are 3 different recipes that will be a pleasure to add to our daily menu:

Green Salad with Strawberries

Easy to Make Strawberry Pastry

Miracle Light Strawberry Moose

Ingredients: 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (approx. 1/2 lb) thawed 1 pack cream cheese (8 oz) 5 tbsp sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 lb strawberries 1 large egg

This amazing recipe is a real miracle, as you get a full bowl of airy light moose out of a single egg white. It is very easy to prepare, has no fat and very few ingredients. Eat it either at room temperature or frozen. Ingredients: 1 lb strawberries, washed and without leaves 3/4 cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract Juice of 1/2 lemon 1 large egg white

Ingredients: 3 cups spring mix leaves 1 small red onion - sliced 1/2 cup Feta cheese crumbles 1 cup strawberries Dressing: 1 tbsp honey 1/2 tsp mustard 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup olive oil 1 tsp salt 1/4 tsp black pepper Preparation: 1. Wash the strawberries, remove the green leaves, and slice. 2. Put all the salad ingredients in a bowl. 3. Put all the ingredients for the dressing in a small jar and shake thoroughly. 4. Pour the dressing on the salad, mix and enjoy.

Preparation: 1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees. 2. Wash the strawberries, remove the green leaves, and slice. 3. Mix the cream cheese, the sugar and the vanilla in a small bowl. 4. Roll the sheet of thawed puff pastry to 1/4" thick. Cut into 5" squares. 5. Lay parchment paper on a baking sheet. Lay the pastry squares on the paper. 6. Use a table spoon to spread cheese on the pastry squares, leaving 1/2" edge. 7. Lay the strawberries on the cheese. 8. Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the edge of the pastry squares. 9. Bake until the edges become golden, approx. 15 minutes.

Preparation: 1. Process the strawberries, sugar, vanilla and lemon juice in a food processor until reaching a smooth mixture (leave a few strawberries aside for decoration). 2. Put the egg white in a mixer bowl. Add the strawberry mixture and beat for 5 minutes. The volume of the mixture will grow enormously. 3. Pour the mixture into personal serving bowls and garnish with the remaining strawberries. 4. You may freeze the mixture and enjoy is later as a frozen dessert.

Newtown Square Presbyterian Church Springs Back Newtown Square Presbyterian Church is Transforming with a Newly-Installed Minister: Reverend Dr. Jeanne Thomas

How did Reverend Thomas do it? Rick Weiss, Chair of Finance, offered his perspective: "Since Reverend Thomas arrived at NSPC, our members no longer just routinely "go to Church on Sunday." Rather, we all join together to celebrate the many blessings we share. Our growth and prosperity is measured by our deep fellowship and the strength that faith instills - which in large measure flows from Jeanne's tireless leadership, heartfelt compassion, and dedication to our congregation." Reverend Thomas added, "When a congregation is open to the power of the Holy Spirit, amazing things happen. Over four years, everything at Newtown Square Presbyterian has multiplied: the Children and Adult Ministry, Church Missions, the Membership, and the contributions we are making to our community." What comes next in the future of Newtown Square Presbyterian Church?

On April 24th, 2016, the Philadelphia Presbytery will install Reverend Dr. Jeanne Thomas as the Senior Pastor of Newtown Square Presbyterian Church. When Jeanne arrived in 2012, the church had an $80,000 deficit, a dwindling congregation, and only 4 children in Sunday school. Today, the Sunday school provides spiritual guidance for nearly 70 children, the congregation is growing steadily, and the church's finances are solid.

"I believe our congregation is inspired by Jesus' great commandment: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself." We want to become a substantial force of service and support to our community - both within our walls, and beyond. We started several new outreach missions just this year! One was a program to feed 10,000 children through a charity called "Stop Hunger Now!" We raised thousands of dollars through multiple

the

events, and members aged 4 through 94 came together to pack the meals in March. It was truly inspirational! Another new mission provides frozen food weekly to Chester Eastside Ministries. And we are adding a new full time Director of Children, Youth, and Mission because children are living messages of our Lord, and are the heartbeat of our church." Church members and colleagues offered some viewpoints on the impact that Pastor Jeanne has had on Newtown Square Presbyterian Church: Lynne Corle, Chairperson of Children and Youth: "Since Jeanne's arrival, our church has been transformed from a group of individuals who worship together on Sunday mornings into a loving, multi-generational family with the common goal of becoming more faithful servants. Walk in on any given Sunday and you can feel the support and connections being made across the board…from wide-eyed toddlers, to young fathers with infants in their arms, to the senior members who are pillars of the church. All are welcomed and all are loved." Melanie Medendorp, Member, Part-time Director of Children and Youth: "Jeanne is magnetic - and people are drawn to her energy. There is also a tremendous amount of respect and connection with Jeanne. She's right here on the same level with everyone else - doing whatever it takes. It's a blessing that she is so approachable and walks along with us. She makes people want to be involved, which increases the energy of the church."

As the Apostle Paul wrote, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God - what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2) Newtown Square Presbyterian Church is located at 3600 Goshen Road, (at the corner of 252 and Goshen Road), Newtown Square, PA. 19073

Jim Lappen, Retired Pastor and Moderator of Session during the search for an Interim Pastor: "The members of NSPC were extremely discouraged four years ago. But with the arrival of Jeanne Thomas, all that changed. Jeanne brought a confidence and spiritual depth that was contagious. Reverend Thomas has loved this congregation back to health, and they have loved her in return. It has been a joy to watch the transformation!"

Dog Training How can I get my dog to walk into doggy daycare calmly? - Marissa, Berwyn Hi Marissa! An eager and excited dog is something we sometimes see here at Perfect Pooch! While we love that your dog can’t wait to play, we understand that it can be frustrating for you to be dragged in by your dog. Your dog’s excitement to be at daycare begins way before you pull into the parking lot. In fact, it probably begins before you leave the house, even at the mere sight of your dog’s leash. The beginning of the excited behavior chain is where you need to start breaking down the series of behaviors. Here are some helpful tips to keep your dog calm while entering daycare:

610-337-7698 200 King Manor Drive King of Prussia, PA 19406 www.perfect-pooch.com

Start at the beginning. Work on your dog calmly sitting for the leash, calmly getting in and out of the car, and calmly walking beside you all individually. Don’t link these tasks together, or your dog will associate seeing the leash with going to daycare. Don’t allow the behavior to keep happening. If you take your dog to daycare regularly, he/she has learned that the sooner you get inside, the sooner playtime starts. The practice of pulling you in has been repeated and reinforced with the reward of playing. Give yourself enough time to get into the daycare doors slowly and assertively. Bring a tasty treat with you. Using the lure of meat or cheese treats will help your dog focus on you more than getting inside. Ask your dog for any calm behavior that you are reasonably sure will be completed, such as “sit.” Take a few steps toward the doors, repeat the request and then reward with the treat. Take another few steps and keep repeating and rewarding. Continue rewarding even when you’re through the doors. Once you are inside the daycare and your dog is accepting your treats, you can ask for one final sit as a staff member takes your dog by the leash. Release the sit with a happy “OK” and let your dog be led away to fun. Over time, you can add more duration between treats. Thank you for your excellent question!
