Police Department - Beware of Scams Beware of These Common Scams

The following are common scams that have occurred throughout the area. The National Association of Bunco Investigators website can provide more detailed information on national scams and provide resources for victims of the crimes. Visit their web page at www.nabihq.org

ATM GRAB - While you're taking money out of an ATM, someone suddenly appears and says, "Excuse me, you dropped $20," pointing to a bill on the ground. While you bend down to pick up the $20 the thief grabs your cash from the machine and runs away.

Always be aware of your surroundings.

BAIL BOND SCAM - The victim receives a phone call from a person claiming to be a friend of a relative of the victim. The victim is told that the relative has been arrested and the "friend" asks for bail money. If the victim agrees, the caller will arrange for himself or another person to pick up the money. Ask for the court's information and advise you will call the court directly, ask verifying questions about the family member, try to call the family member direct or ask for the police department name that arrested the person and call them first, don't just send or give them the money.

CHARITABLE SOLICITATIONS - These con criminals will make you think you are giving to a good cause, but the result is that the money goes to them. Scam artists also advertise fake charities using similar names to those of well-known legitimate charities.

Research the charity before you give.

DIVERSION BURGLARY - A man, woman

and one or two children appear at the victim's door and plead to use the victim's phone claiming to have an emergency and must call for help. Or they may simply ask for a drink of water. Once inside, one offender distracts the victim while another searches the house for valuables. Other common diversion scams are done by posing as utility workers. Always ask for company identification and call police if you are not sure.

DOOR-TO-DOOR SOLICITOR - As a

door-to-door solicitor, the con artist asks for

a donation to benefit a nonexistent organization or sells a product for a reduced price if the person signs the contract immediately and pays cash. Verify a solicitor's identification and permit. LPPD issues photo permits to all authorized solicitors. If in doubt, call your local police immediately, 610-539-5901.

GRANDCHILD IN DISTRESS - A grandparent receives a frantic call from someone they believe to be their grandchild.

The supposed grandchild sounds distressed and may be calling from a noisy location.

They claim to be involved in some type of trouble while traveling out of the U.S. and asks the grandparent to immediately wire money. The scammer typically asks for several thousand dollars and may even call back asking for more money. He or she may claim embarrassment about the alleged trouble and ask the grandparent to keep it a secret. A second scammer may pose as some type of law enforcement officer.

Alternatively, the scammer may pretend to be a family friend or neighbor. A common theme of the scam across the nation is the caller's request for the grandparent to wire money through Western Union or MoneyGram or to provide bank account routing numbers. Wiring money is like sending cash; there is no way you can reverse the transaction, trace the money, or recover payment from the telephone con artists. Again, ask verifying questions about the family member, try to call the family member or someone close to them, don't just send or give them the money.

SEALCOATING SCAM - In a typical seal

coating scam, the suspect approaches the homeowner with a claim of having "leftover" coating material (usually in the bed of a pick-up truck), and contracts to seal the homeowner's driveway. Once the homeowner pays for the job, the suspect sprays a cheap oily material on the driveway or just drives off. They may also quote one price and when they complete the job say they needed to use more material and demand a higher price.

Always know who you are dealing with and get the quote in writing, verify the business before agreeing to the work.

Vacant House Watch Program When leaving your home for short or extended periods of time, the Police Departments strongly suggests that you register your residence under a “Vacant House Watch” program. When vacated an officer will conduct an exterior security check of your residence on a daily basis. You may register your home on-line or by calling your local police department.

Burglary Prevention Tips

Local Police Departments offer the following tips to remove burglary opportunities at your residence.

Homeowners should practice prevention thereby reducing your risk of becoming a victim of a residential burglary. A resident should consider taking the following steps to promote security and safety in the home:

Doors

Use a solid core or metal door for all entrance points Use a quality, heavy-duty, deadbolt lock with a 1 inch throw bolt Use a quality, heavy-duty, knob-in-lock set with a dead-latch mechanism Use a heavy-duty, 4 screw, strike plate with 3 inch screws to penetrate into a wooden door frame Use a wide-angle 160° peephole mounted no higher than 58 inches

Windows

Secure all accessible windows with secondary blocking devices Block accessible windows open no more than 6 inches for ventilation Make sure someone cannot reach through an open window and unlock the door Make sure someone cannot reach inside the window and remove the blocking device Use anti-lift devices to prevent window from being lifted out

Lighting

Use interior light timers to establish a pattern of occupancy Exterior lighting should allow 100 - feet of visibility Use good lighting along the pathway and at your door Use light timers or photo-cells to turn on/off lights automatically Use infra-red motion sensor lights on the rear of single family homes

Alarm Systems

Alarm systems are effective deterrents with visible signage Alarm systems to be properly installed, programmed, and maintained Alarm systems need to have an audible horn or bell to be effective Make sure your alarm response call list is up to date Instruct your neighbor how to respond to an alarm bell

Newtown Public Library Artist Series Artist Jennifer Nettingham th June 24 to August 26th!

Considering that she had no formal training as a painter, that seemed like a rather extraordinary message. But, being resourceful, she went online and Googled “painting techniques for people who don't know how to paint.”

And Jenn found pour painting / liquid art.

What is it? It's a process of combining acrylic paints with a pouring medium (like Floetrol) which essentially keeps the colors intact. It allows the individual tints to keep their integrity. The paints layer together without blending which makes it possible to achieve an infinite variety of intricate patterns.

First days at school, at a new job, or in a new home can be both exciting and a bit nervewracking. But inaugural events are always full of potential. Jennifer Nettingham's first major solo art exhibit at Newtown Square Public Library rings all those bells.

Jennifer's beautiful, intuitive, fluid art exhibit encapsulates a spirit of adventure and creativity which began with a question. Jenn loves to meditate, and as she was emerging from a deep state of contemplation one day, she decided to ask “What is it that you want me to do?” Immediately, she heard the word “Paint!”

Individual colors are drizzled on a canvas, and then manipulated in a variety of ways. You can use heat (Jennifer uses a hair dryer to gently coax and lift the layers of color) or swipe the canvas with tools, or simply tilt the painting to see what emerges.

There are multiple other techniques like the “Dirty Pour,” where the artist adds good dollops of multiple colors into a single cup. The cup is then inverted onto a canvas, and an explosion of color ensues. “Cells” often emerge which are basically bubbles of color that can be reminiscent of stellar formations or dreamy underwater vistas or crèmebrûlée.

Jennifer described her attraction to the process: This type of painting is a stretch. You have to give up control, which can be difficult. If you don't step aside, so to speak, it doesn't work. But when you surrender and let go - the beauty happens. It's an expressive experiment in creativity and that gives you a certain amount of freedom. The combination of air, water, earth, and heat can generate amazing results. In reality, you are just a conduit for the art, because all those forces influence the final result. I always start with a peaceful and calm intention, and I hope that is what others experience as well.

The beautiful range of results speak for themselves, and the Friends of the Library are delighted that Jenn's first major energizing and engaging exhibit will be at the Newtown Square Public Library through August 26th. Spotted Lanternfly The Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive insect that has the potential to greatly impact agricultural crops such as grapes, hops, and hardwoods and reduce the quality of life in heavily infested areas.

Egg masses are laid on trees, decks, houses, and other hard surfaces and are protected by a mudlike covering. SLF adults are the most detectable stage since they are large, brightly colored, and mobile. If you believe you have SLF on your property, read Penn State Extension's guide for homeowners found at https://extension.psu.edu/spotted-lanternflymanagement-for-homeowners. Professional pest managers use an integrated approach called integrated pest management (IPM) to eliminate as many SLF as possible while minimizing potential risks to the environment. One IPM method for destroying SLF is using “trap” trees. Thousands of SLF can be killed by one trap tree. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) is establishing many trap trees in the infested area to kill as many SLF as possible while minimizing pesticide use. Property owners can also establish trap trees on their land or hire a professional service to help them.

How do trap trees work?

Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a preferred host for SLF. In the fall, many SLF adults relocate to feed on tree-of-heaven. To set up trap trees, most tree-of-heaven trees are killed. The remaining treeof-heaven trees are treated with an insecticide that is moved throughout the entire tree. When the SLF adults feed on the treated trap trees, they ingest the systemic insecticide and die. As additional SLF relocate to feed on the trap trees, they also die.

Steps to establish a trap tree to kill SLF:

1) Identify all tree-of-heaven trees on the site.

Spotted lanternflies seem to prefer certain tree-ofheaven trees over others. Locate specific trees that are most attractive to the spotted lanternfly based on the number of insects feeding on them. For information on how to identify tree-of-heaven, see

2) Treat approximately 85 percent of the tree-ofheaven trees with a properly labeled herbicide. Kill all female tree-of-heaven trees if possible; they produce seed and contribute to the spread of this invasive tree. Leave only a few male tree-of-heaven trees that appear to be more attractive to the insect to serve as trap trees.

Herbicides recommended to kill tree-of-heaven trees contain the active ingredient triclopyr, which comes in two formulations: water based (amine) and oil based (ester). Both formulations are effective for controlling tree-of-heaven. Other herbicides are effective; but to prevent herbicide injury to trap trees through common root systems, limit herbicide selection to triclopyr. Herbicide application methods effective for controlling tree-of-heaven include foliar sprays, basal bark, and spaced-cut hack-and-squirt applications. Treating cut stumps is ineffective at controlling the tree-of-heaven; it will not control the roots. For more information about herbicide application methods, go to extensio.psu.edu/publications/uh174.

Herbicide applications made to control tree-ofheaven are most effective when applied from July 1 to September 30, when the plant is exporting sugars to the roots. Applications made outside this window

are not effective at controlling the roots and may only injure aboveground growth.

Cutting tree-of-heaven is often necessary to remove potentially hazardous trees, but it is not useful as a stand-alone control measure. They will resprout vigorously from stumps and roots. In situations where tree-of-heaven stems need to be removed, it is best to treat them with herbicide first and then cut. Allow 30 days for the herbicide to take effect before cutting. 3) Treat the remaining tree-of-heaven trap trees with an insecticide that will move throughout the tree.

For best results, apply the insecticide according to the label in June through August. When spotted lanternflies feed on treated trees, they will die.

Systemic insecticides known to be effective and labeled to treat ornamental trees, including tree-ofheaven, contain the active ingredients dinotefuran or imidacloprid. PDA is using dinotefuran to establish trap trees. Treating only trap trees reduces the total amount of insecticide used in comparison to largescale contact insecticide applications.

Summer Safety Tips Take the BITE Out of Summer - Safely!

We don't have Zika (yet), but now is the time Mosquitoes that cause West Nile Virus can breed in standing water as small as a bottle cap. Eliminating standing water breeding sites at home is the best long-term, environmentally friendly solution. Where standing water can't be eliminated, placing Bti "dunks" (available at hardware stores) in standing water pools is an environmentally friendly way to prevent mosquito growth.

Keep grass clippings out of the streets that wash into storm sewers and provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Stay indoors at sunrise, sunset and early evening when mosquitoes are most active.

Use yellow "bug" lights outdoors - they attract fewer mosquitoes (but they are NOT repellents) Carefully use insect repellent effective for mosquitoes with the active ingredients DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), Picaridin (KBR 3023), or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus [active ingredient: p-menthane 3,8-diol (PMD)] following instructions. Tips For Properly Watering Plants Every living thing in your landscape needs water to thrive, and watering correctly is vital, whether you are hand-watering planters, or using a sprinkler system to achieve a lush green lawn. We will help you understand how to properly water new plants and established ones. If you lack the time necessary for such care, we can also help you by installing a customized sprinkler system.

Use a sprinkler system Controlled and proper watering of established plants, trees and shrubs is still important, and an automatic sprinkler system can be programmed for each area of your landscape.

Provide deep watering Just as for newly planted specimens, established plants and trees need to develop

Maintain a 2-2 ½ mulch layer to help conserve ground moisture, prevent weeds, and retain moisture. Remember, excess amounts of mulch will result in poor air circulation and reduce plant vigor. The Burkholder team installs 3” at the time of planting. Install only 1-2” each year thereafter.

Why Use a Sprinkler System for Proper Watering of Plants?

Stress-free, hands-off irrigation of your lawn is possible with an automatic sprinkler system.

Today’s sprinkler irrigation systems have zones, so that you can program the right water levels for each aspect of your landscape. So your plant beds can have long deep watering cycles at the desired frequency, and your grass can get the right amount of water as well.

Grass watering requirements can vary according to rainfall, whereas much of rainfall is unable to be used by trees and shrubs due to runoff, as previously mentioned. Your irrigation system can be programmed to allow for rainfall’s impact on water levels. You can also be sure that your plants and trees remain healthy when you go on vacation if you have a sprinkler system.

Tips for Properly Watering New Plants

New plants may have different requirements than those that are established already. The Burkholder team has some tips for properly watering new plants and established ones.

Check all plants weekly Check newly planted trees and shrubs every few days for the first two weeks. Annuals and perennials should be checked more often.

After that two week period, check every 7 to 10 days. Simply dig around the root zone with your fingers to a depth of 2-3” for small plants and 6-8” for larger ones and for trees.

Water generously when the soil feels dry to the touch.

Provide slow, deep watering This type of watering is accomplished by placing the hose at the base of the plant, at a heavy trickle. Water for 30-60 seconds for small plants – longer for larger plants while moving the hose to a few locations around the plant.

Avoid watering when the soil feels moist.

Soil must be allowed to dry out between watering. If a plant is maintained in constantly moist soil, the plant’s health will deteriorate over time. A plant weakened by over watering may die of oxygen deprivation or become susceptible to pest and disease.

For this reason, lawn irrigation systems, if not designed correctly, can be hazardous to ornamental plantings.

Tips for Properly Watering Established Plants

As your landscape grows more mature, your watering practices may need to be adjusted.

Below are a few tips to ensure optimal plant health.

Monitor Water Requirements Frequently

Monitoring water requirements frequently is more important than actually watering frequently. Monitor your plants’ water requirements for at least the first two to three years. Plantings close to buildings where heat may reflect and plants under roof eaves require closer monitoring. During the hot summer months and early fall disregard natural rainfall. Often, rain received during these periods produces mostly run-off and contributes little, if any, to increasing ground moisture.

Using mulch in general is a good idea because the mulch aids in retaining water. In addition to that factor, mulching around trees and shrubs enables them to more efficiently take in water. Grass around trees and shrubs competes with them for water.

Tali Guy’s Recipe Page Stir Fried Artichoke And Mushrooms The artichoke is the flower of a thorny bush whose peak season is Spring. It is a desirable part of Mediterranean diets. It is low in calories and high in fiber. The artichoke may be prepared and eaten in many forms, in a salad, cooked, in pasta, steamed, or stuffed. It is found fresh, frozen, canned or in jars, marinated in vinaigrette, or in oil. The following recipe describes using a fresh artichoke, but it may also be used in any other available form.

Ingredients (3-4 servings):

Preparation:

4 fresh artichokes 2 cups sliced mushrooms (any kind) 1/2 lemon 3 table spoons olive oil 1 table spoon butter 1/4 tea spoon salt 1 table spoon capers 4 garlic cloves - pealed and smashed 2 bay leaves 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 cup chopped parsley

1. Prepare a bowl with 1/2 gallon cool water and squeeze the 1/2 lemon into it. Add the squeezed lemon in the bowl as well.

2. Lay the artichoke on a wooden cutting board. Use a sharp kitchen knife to cut the stem, and the green leaves all around the artichoke sides.

Cut the top half of the artichoke and discard of it. Trim any remaining green leaves around the bottom.

3. Cut the artichoke into quarters and remove the hairy center. Slice the quarters into 1/4" slices and put them in the lemon water bowl (to prevent the artichokes from becoming black).

4. Boil 1 gallon water and add 1 table spoon salt when the water reaches boiling. Take the artichoke slices out of the lemon water and add to the boiling water. Continue boiling for another 5 minutes.

5. Remove the artichokes into an empty bowl.

6. Heat the oil and butter in a heavy frying pan. Add the 1/4 tea spoon salt, capers, garlic and bay leaves. Stir for 1 minute and add the artichoke and mushrooms. Keep stirring for 5 minutes.

7. Pour the wine and keep stirring until the alcohol evaporates for approximately 3 minutes.

8. Add the parsley and stir for 1 more minute.

9. Serve hot or cold, and enjoy.

These days, when temperatures rise and the scenery is green, there is an abundance of beautiful strawberries at relatively low prices in the produce department. Everybody loves strawberries at all ages. Strawberries are low in calories and are loaded with Vitamin C. Now is the time to enjoy them.

Here are 3 different recipes that will be a pleasure to add to our daily menu:

Miracle Light Strawberry Moose

Easy to Make Strawberry Pastry

This amazing recipe is a real miracle, as you get a full bowl of airy light moose out of a single egg white. It is very easy to prepare, has no fat and very few ingredients. Eat it either at room temperature or frozen.

Ingredients: 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (approx. 1/2 lb) thawed 1 pack cream cheese (8 oz) 5 tbsp sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 lb strawberries 1 large egg

Ingredients: 1 lb strawberries, washed and without leaves 3/4 cup sugar - 1 tsp vanilla extract Juice of 1/2 lemon - 1 large egg white

Green Salad with Strawberries

Ingredients: 3 cups spring mix leaves 1 small red onion - sliced 1/2 cup Feta cheese crumbles 1 cup strawberries

Preparation: 1. Process the strawberries, sugar, vanilla and lemon juice in a food processor until reaching a smooth mixture (leave a few strawberries aside for decoration).

2. Put the egg white in a mixer bowl. Add the strawberry mixture and beat for 5 minutes. The volume of the mixture will grow enormously.

3. Pour the mixture into personal serving bowls and garnish with the remaining strawberries.

4. You may freeze the mixture and enjoy is later as a frozen dessert.

Preparation: 1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. Wash the strawberries, remove the green leaves, and slice.

3. Mix the cream cheese, the sugar and the vanilla in a small bowl.

4. Roll the sheet of thawed puff pastry to 1/4" thick. Cut into 5" squares.

5. Lay parchment paper on a baking sheet.

Lay the pastry squares on the paper.

6. Use a table spoon to spread cheese on the pastry squares, leaving 1/2" edge.

7. Lay the strawberries on the cheese.

8. Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the edge of the pastry squares.

9. Bake until the edges become golden, approx. 15 minutes.

Dressing: 1 tbsp honey 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 tsp mustard 1 tsp salt 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 tsp black pepper Preparation: 1. Wash the strawberries, remove the green leaves, and slice.

2. Put all the salad ingredients in a bowl.

3. Put all the ingredients for the dressing in a small jar and shake thoroughly.

4. Pour the dressing on the salad, mix and enjoy.

Health Corner CT Scan Offers Early Detection Of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is one of the most common and deadliest forms of cancer, claiming more lives each year than breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Unfortunately, it's also a cancer that is rarely detected early.

“By the time people begin to experience the symptoms of lung cancer - a raspy or bloody cough, shortness of breath, recurrent pneumonia and bronchitis, chest pain - it's often when the disease has reached advanced stages. This makes it more difficult to treat,” explains Michael Walker, MD, chief of thoracic surgery and medical director of Main Line Health Cancer Care.

Who Is Considered At High Risk For Lung Cancer?

People who are smokers or who have a history of smoking are at a higher risk for lung cancer than people who have never smoked. This includes people who: Are between 55 - 80 years old Are an active smoker or have quit within the past 15 years Smoked at least one pack per day for 20 years or two packs per day for 15 years If you fall into any of these categories, you may be eligible for a low-dose CT scan. Other factors, like your history of lung cancer and disease, may also make you eligible to receive this low-dose CT scan. If you are currently a smoker or you have a history of smoking, ask your doctor whether this scan might be right for you.

The screening is paid for by many insurances, including Medicare. Be sure to check with your own insurance company to determine whether you'll have any out-of-pocket expenses.

Recognizing The Signs And Symptoms Of Lung Cancer

While a CT scan remains the most effective way to detect and diagnose lung cancer early, it's still important to recognize

symptoms that may be early indicators of lung cancer. These symptoms include: A new cough or a cough that doesn't go away Shortness of breath Coughing up blood Weight loss Headache Bone pain Chest pain Symptoms like these should prompt a visit to your doctor - especially if you have a history of smoking or exposure to carcinogens.

Lung cancer screening options were limited in their ability to detect the disease early. In 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) approved a new lung cancer screening test: a low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan.

Unlike traditional chest X-rays, which are limited in their ability to detect a tumor in its earliest stage, this CT scan can detect lung tumors and abnormalities when they are as small as a grain of rice. It does this by taking dozens of X-ray images of the lungs from several different angles - far more than a traditional chest X-ray.

“A CT scan provides a much more comprehensive view of your lungs than traditional chest X-rays, which only detect tumors when they've grown to be about the size of a small coin,” says Dr. Walker. As a result, lung cancer can be detected and

Serving In The Community

Meet Main Line Meals on Wheels Many of you have heard of Meals on Wheels, but not so many know much about us. Meals on Wheels is active throughout the United States; our local program is Main Line Meals on Wheels. We deliver meals out of both Devon and Bryn Mawr locations.

Our mission is to deliver nutritious meals to the aged, convalescents, homebound and handicapped persons who are unable to shop or cook for themselves, regardless of race, color, creed, age or ability to pay.

You may think that not many people who live on the Main Line are in need, but that is not reality. People in our own communities unnecessarily go hungry - or are not properly nourished - every day.

Here are some current statistics: We average ~120 patrons per day with two meals.

We deliver meals five days per week.

That equals ~260 deliveries per patron, per year.

10:15am. Deliveries are completely staffed by volunteers. Volunteers work in teams of two: a driver, using their own vehicle (miles driven are tax deductible), and a “visitor” who carries the meals to the clients' residences. Patrons are grouped into “routes”, keeping them as close together as possible. A route usually consists of about 12 patrons.

Completing delivery to a route takes about two hours.

Most commonly, patrons either leave their doors unlocked for us to enter, or someone (the patron or a caregiver) comes to the door to receive them. Some patrons leave coolers outside their doors to store the meals until someone retrieves them, but we strongly prefer to see each patron every day so we know that they are well.

Assuming 10 routes, we need 20 volunteers to work every day, five days per week. As you can imagine, the pool of volunteers must be much larger. Volunteers are free to work as often or as seldom as they wish.

Commonly, for example, a volunteer will have a regular schedule, for example, be a driver or a visitor on the same day each week. In that case, they usually have the same route, as visitors like to establish a rapport with their patrons, while drivers get to know the route. At the other end of the spectrum, some volunteers work only on a substitute basis: we call them if we have a vacancy and they are free to accept or decline.

We also have volunteers who work in the Devon and Bryn Mawr “pantries” every day. These people package the meals for pickup by the driver and visitor teams. They work from about 9:30am until 10:15am.

Both Devon and Bryn Mawr locations have managers for their program.

The managers interface with patrons via phone and also make sure each route has both a driver and visitor every day. The managers also greet the driver and visitor teams when meals are picked up and at the end of their routes.

We always welcome new patrons. If you know anyone who can use our services either temporarily or on an ongoing basis - please have them call us.

We are constantly in need of volunteers to join the pool. If you think you may like to help us, please call and speak with one of our managers. We are happy to have you come along on a route to get a feel for whether it would be a good fit for you.

Senior Lifestyles Exercise is the Key for Healthy Aging

Health experts have the long known the benefits of exercise. It helps strengthen the cardiovascular system, reduce bone loss, improve digestion, prevent chronic diseases and avoid weight gain. Some older adults are reluctant to exercise because they believe exercise must be rigorous or painful to have benefits. “As you age, you should strive for consistency rather than intensity - ideally 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day,” says Jacqui, personal trainer in the Fitness Center at Surrey Services for Seniors in Devon.

The ideal exercise regiment for older adults should include the following three components which can be adapted for anyone's unique stamina and abilities.

Walking, stationary cycling or swimming for 30 minutes daily are great aerobic exercises for seniors. If 30 minutes is too tiring at first, try breaking exercise into two 15-minute or three, 10-minute sessions.

Strength and resistance training.

Environmental Update The Current Recycling Crisis

Ban the Bottle

Many communities are launching a “Ban the Bottle” initiative. Let’s start this summer by urging our children to take reusable bottles to day camps and trips to the playgrounds and parks. This will educate our children on environmental issues and stewardship, while also greatly impacting the production of waste, beautifying our parks, and strengthening our efforts to recycle more efficiently. As adults, we can also participate by implementing this practice in the work place and at home.

Ban the Bottle will be an easy first step in bringing our community toward Zero Waste.

Plastic water bottles consume an enormous amount of energy to produce, package, and transport. We spend over $11 billion per year on bottled water. Globally, it is estimated that more than 500 billion plastic bottles are produced each year, but only 14 percent are recycled. The rest are landfilled, burned or discarded in our environment. It is a staggering and depressing amount of waste that could have been reduced and re-used.

The Beginnings of Plastic and Throwaway Living

In August 1955, Life Magazine revealed a cover story entitled “Throwaway Living.”

Inside this article the term "throw-away society" was coined to describe the new trend of plastic products that promised to minimize the time housewives spent accomplishing their daily chores. Why spend valuable time washing and reusing household objects like plates and silverware when they can be inexpensively made of plastic and disposed of after use?

This launched a plastic revolution that quickly infiltrated every part of our day-today lives. In the last fifty plus years we have seen an explosion of products created with a one-use life span. Ironically enough, these single use products are manufactured from plastic, a material made to last thousands of years. It is estimated that today the average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year. This accounts for 10 percent of the total waste we generate.

Not to mention 75 percent of this plastic waste goes directly to landfills, where it will not decompose for 500-1,000 years.

On March 1, 2018, China followed through with its threat to prohibit the import of U.S. plastics, mixed paper and other materials.

For years, the US relied on China to take 40 percent of its recyclables for processing and manufacturing. Now, thousands of tons of materials that would have been recycled are going into landfills instead. Some municipalities have stopped collecting items that used to be recycled and others have been stockpiling them to combat this crisis.

In Philadelphia, for example, the city can no longer keep up with both the volume and the contaminated condition of recyclable waste. As a result, about 200 tons of recycling material is sent to the huge Covanta incinerator in Chester City each day.

The burning of trash releases a host of pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides and particulate matter, which are tiny fragments of debris that, once inhaled, cause an array of health problems.

In addition to landfills, a large portion of plastic waste ends up in our oceans and waterways. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean that amounts to approximately twice the size of Texas. Further, plastic is often mistaken for food by sea animals and has been found in the stomachs of more than 60% of all seabirds and in 100% of sea turtle species. When an animal ingests plastic, it can cause life-threatening problems, including reduced fitness, nutrient uptake and feeding efficiency.

Zero Waste

At the root of these complex issues is a simple change in habit. We need to reduce waste at the source itself. If we are more conscious about what we buy and use in our day to day lives, we can stop the chain of waste and litter before it even happens.

That is why we are urging our community to consider adopting Zero Waste practices.

Many communities across the country have already pledged to work toward a Zero Waste Plan or Resolution. Some examples include Oakland CA, NYC, and even Philadelphia.

Zero Waste is about guiding people in changing their lifestyles and practices to match sustainable natural cycles which encourage waste prevention, reusing, recycling and composting the materials we typically dispose. This will promote clean production, prevent pollution, and create communities in which all products are designed to be cycled safely back into the economy and the environment.

What are the key benefits?

Climate Impact

Extracting raw materials from natural spaces requires large amounts of energy and causes pollution, whether it is logging a forest, mining for minerals or drilling for oil. Processing these materials requires more energy and causes more pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Once they're used, the goods are simply dumped in a landfill or destroyed in an incinerator.

In contrast, a Zero Waste approach conserves natural resources and reduces pollution from extraction, manufacturing and disposal. Reducing and reusing means fewer products are made, as people buy less and as products are made to last.

Save Money

Zero Waste builds a circular economy where one person's “waste” is a resource for something new. This greatly reduces the cost of having to buy continuous disposable materials for single-use such as like plastic water bottles, paper lunch bags, and plastic utensils.

Build Community

Zero Waste starts at home and finds its way through various sectors of the community. Community projects focused on re-use help redistribute useful goods to those in need, from leftover food donated to shelters, to furniture for refugees, to business clothing for those entering the job market. Communitybased zero waste strategies like composting at a community garden, tool sharing and skills sharing to reuse and repair, build capacity to reduce waste and costs.

Strengthens Health and Wellness

A Zero Waste approach ultimately protects the health of communities by reducing pollution in the air, water and soil by keeping toxics and waste out of landfills and incinerators.

The benefit of being waste conscious and reducing harmful impacts on our environment is beyond calculation. As residents, it is our responsibility to keep our open spaces clean and beautiful for generations to come. This initiative is the first step toward a more sustainable future.

Stormwater Management Washing Your Vehicle

Swimming Pool Owners Responsibilities to Protect Local Streams

Where you wash your car matters.

The best option for our rivers is to take your vehicle to a commercial car wash, especially if you plan to clean the engine or the bottom of the car.

Most car washes reuse water several times before sending it on to a water pollution control plant.

Every year, there are fish kills in our local streams due to the discharge of water that has not been fully dechlorinated to storm drains.

Pennsylvania's Clean Stream Law prohibits the discharge of any swimming pool water without a permit. However, it has been the DEP's policy not to require permits for discharges from single resident pools provided the guidelines outlined below are followed. Please check if your municipality allows discharges to sanitary sewers.

Vehicles washed in driveways and parking lots allow dirty wash water to find its way to the nearest storm drain. That water often contains oils and grease, phosphates (from the soap) and heavy metals—all substances that are unhealthy for people, fish, and other living things.

If you would rather wash your car at home, protect our local streams with these tips:

Home Car Wash Tips: Wash your vehicle on gravel, grass, or another permeable surface so the ground can filter the water naturally.

Use soap sparingly and try to use non-phosphate detergents.

Phosphates are pollutants that can be harmful to nearby waterways and promote excess growth of algae.

Use a hose that is high pressure and low volume. Fit your hose with a nozzle that automatically turns off, or has a pistol grip or trigger nozzle to save water. Wash one section at a time and rinse quickly.

Residents and property managers who drain water from swimming pools need to be aware of ways to minimize environmental impact from pool water which contains chemicals that may be harmful to the environment.

When you are done, empty the bucket of soapy water down the sink—not into the street.

If you are hosting a car wash fundraiser, consider selling coupon books. Many car wash companies offer fundraiser savings books to nonprofit organizations and sports teams at reduced prices. The coupons can then be used anytime by the supporter.

Rain Gardens

Rain gardens are shallow, planted depressions that are designed to absorb water from your roof, allowing it to drain directly into the soil. Typically, a downspout from your home is diverted toward the rain garden. This can prevent hundreds of gallons per year from entering the stormwater system. Rain gardens are one of the most cost effective ways to manage stormwater runoff and can be a beautiful addition to your existing landscape design.

Rain Gardens Tips Check your soil first! Rain gardens require well-draining soil.

Rain gardens must be planted at least 10 feet from any below-ground basement.

Rain gardens can be designed to suit your landscaping preferences by using a variety of native, perennial plant species.

This is not a vegetable or herb garden. Rain gardens are designed to absorb stormwater and filter out pollutants—not for growing food.

Summer Vacation!

an excerpt from Andrew Mullen’s book, Middle Schooled.

Hello Parents!

The summer is here! What are you going to do? It is crazy how the years fly by. Having the summers to spend with your middle school kids is such a gift (really, it is) and the time can slip by so quickly. Take full advantage of this opportunity and make some amazing memories. Here are a few ideas for you and your family to think about: Totally unplug. If you go on vacation, you and your kids should turn off and put away the cell phones. This is liberating and allows you all to re-set and get back to basics. Things like talking to each other, looking around instead of down and being present in the here and now are good things.

Go back to the 1970's! I vividly remember being outside all day, working on my burn, playing Wiffle Ball (you still can't hit my knuckle ball), swimming and having completely unstructured time to be a kid. Allow your kids this same opportunity and embrace it! Play some Lynyrd Skynyrd, put on some tight OP shorts, relax and play with your kids. Having nothing planned is awesome. Un-structured time also allows your kids to use their imagination.

Use all of the vacation/personal time you can. The kids are only young once. When possible, take more than a few days off so you can get into a re-laxed vacation tempo. I think in the travel business they call this the rhythm method, but I may be wrong on that.

The school year is crazy busy with homework, sports, etc. Perhaps your kids have not had time to really help with the daily chores around the house. Consider creating new responsibilities for the kids during the summer months.

Cooking lunch, folding the laundry, whatever helps your home run, they can contribute. For example, at Camp Safety Last, the kids are learning how to prune trees close to power lines. When a minimal level of competency is reached this could be on their weekly chore list.

restaurant, go camping, visit a town you have always wanted to see.

Doing some-thing new can be energizing and breaking the routine can be refreshing. (If you go camping, you may want to sprinkle hot dogs around the tent perimeter to allow the kids to see wildlife really close up. Let me know how that goes.)

What did you love to do before you had kids? Maybe the kids are ready to learn and participate in those activities. Long bike rides, fly fishing, golfing, knitting, wild boar hunting. If you loved it, maybe your kids will too.

Having amazing family time does not mean spending a ton of money.

It means sharing real time together, laughing and having fun.

Too much family time? Need some time without the kids? Play and sing along with the song “Wannabe” from the Spice Girls and your kids will leave you alone. Guaranteed to work. Tried it last night and it cleared the room.

I hope you have a wonderful summer!

Go Paintballing! The kids might be ready for this now. I recommend finding the people with annual memberships, wearing camouflage, toting their own high-end equipment, and challenge them to a game. Pain can be good for the kids.

When it is hot and humid, and you need time in-side, have the kids watch the original Karate Kid. When it cools down, they can wax your car.

Do something new that is outside of your comfort zone. Try a new

A Sizzling Summer at Newtown Square Presbyterian Church Children want fun activities with friends during the summer, and Sara Boninu, the Director of Youth and Family Ministry at Newtown Square Presbyterian Church, is known for events that both entertain and engage children - from preschool to high school. Under Sara's leadership, Vacation Bible School in June was a huge success with over 100 children in attendance! And the fun programs keep rolling throughout July and August!

The schedule includes mission projects, a bonfire, outdoor games, family camping, a swim party, a trip to Dorney Park, and a visit to the historic 1742 Square Tavern, where everyone will have an extraordinary opportunity to touch history and learn about our colonial roots. Sara invites all childrenth from the community to jointhus on July 10 , th 16th, 22nd, 31st, and August 5 , 9 & 10 (Camping Trip!), 14th, 19th, and 27th.

Confirmation class for outgoing 7th and 8th graders in the community will also be held this summer by Reverend Dr. Jeanne Thomas.

Pastor Jeanne will lead six interactive sessions, where students will gain an introduction to the Bible, the Trinity, worship, and discipleship.

Reverend Jeanne explained: “Middle school can be a tough time. Children this age are beginning to ask the hard questions, and the development of faith is part of the growth process. Confirmation class gives them space for the exploration of faith in a safe and supportive environment.

Participants will ultimately be confirmed at NSPC on World Communion Sunday October 6th.”
