2017 Economic Development Projects Tredyffrin Township continues to be one of the best places to live and work in the Philadelphia region. With our favorable business climate and top-tier school district, Tredyffrin is seeing more and more construction dollars and permits submitted on both the residential and commercial side of building activity.

Below are some projects that are currently underway, as well as some future projects that will kick-off in the coming year. Thank you for taking the time to read this. It is my pleasure serving the residents of Tredyffrin Township!

Paoli Train Station Groundbreaking st

On March 1 , officials from various local, county, state, and federal agencies were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony at the Paoli Train Station. The Phase I "Accessibility Improvements" are officially underway, as Amtrak, SEPTA, and PennDOT have joined together to modernize the station. This project will set the stage for future improvements in and around the station area.

2017 Economic Development Projects Life Time Athletic Life Time Athletic is tentatively scheduled to open this summer at the former CertainTeed site and offer many services including a fullservice spa; a cafe that provides a healthy diet; nationally renowned group fitness instructors and personal trainers; an indoor cycling studio; squash courts; cutting-edge fitness equipment; and a 65,000 square foot outdoor pool.

Parkview at Chesterbrook Adjacent to the newly reconfigured Chesterbrook Shopping Center and Wilson Farm Park, Parkview at Chesterbrook will provide 123 townhomes within close walking distance to 31,000 square feet of retail and 86 acres of parkland. Many units are already occupied!

Brightview is a senior care community and will offer a variety of apartment styles from which to choose.

Atwater Crossing Located in the Atwater Corporate Park, Sage Senior Living (owners of Daylesford Crossing) is building a residential care facility for older persons. The site will feature rich amenities, such as physical therapy, exercise facilities, doctors' offices, health clinic, games, laundry, dining, salon, cafĂŠ, and craft rooms for

residents' use. The facility will contain 250 units (160 independent living, 60 assisted/memory care, and 30 skilled nursing units) with 283 beds. This project is expected to begin construction later in 2017.

Marriott Fairfield Inn and Suites Located in Westlakes Office Park, next to the quarry, a Marriott Fairfield Inn and Suites was recently approved by the Township's Planning Commission. This hotel will be four stories and contain 124 rooms with convenient access to the Chester Valley Trail (directly to the south). Construction should begin in mid-to-late 2017.

Vanguard Vanguard, one the world's largest investment companies, continues to invest in their buildings and perform infrastructure improvements to their Tredyffrin campus.

Brightview Brightview will begin construction in the summer of 2017 and will be located on East Conestoga Road behind Whole Foods.

Acme Grand Reopening Tredyffrin Township officials congratulated Acme on the Grand Reopening of their Paoli location on February 24th. In celebration of the renovations, Acme made various charitable donations, including a park bench that will be dedicated to the Township.

Authorities, Boards And Committees Did you know that there are "behind-thescenes" people from the Township who serve on authorities, boards and committees who willingly give of their time, expertise, and energy in service to Tredyffrin? Many of the folks who serve are volunteers. They are your neighbors, parents of your children's friends, and members of your community. You are familiar with the Board of Supervisors, the Township Manager and his Department Heads, the Superintendent of Police and his police department, the Public Works crews who you see out on the roads in the winter and in the parks in the nice weather, and the administrative staff who help you out every day. Let's take a look at these ABC's in Tredyffrin.

Board of Supervisors Members of the Board of Supervisors serve four-year terms and they are the Township's decision making body of seven elected officials. Supervisors establish Township policy, initiate and adopt ordinances and resolutions relating to Township business, determine the rates for both real estate and other taxes they are empowered to use, and set both capital and operating budgets.

Supervisors provide for police and fire protection, planning and zoning, street maintenance and snow removal, sewers, libraries, parks and recreation, regulate land use development and building construction.

Supervisors also appoint key Township officials and residents to Township Authorities, Board and Commissions.

Environmental Advisory Council Members of the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) serve three-year terms and are dedicated to exploring and promoting environmental initiatives in the Township.

They work at the direction of the Board of Supervisors and as an extension of Township staff to research environmental issues and

funding sources; to advise Township staff and supervisors; to sponsor environmental education; to partner with Township residents, outside agencies, and organizations with similar interests; and to coordinate environmental projects.

Historical Commission Members of the Historical Commission (HC) serve three-year terms and they advise the Township on matters concerning the preservation of historic resources.

Library Board of Trustees Members of the Library Board of Trustees serve three-year terms and they determine policy for the Tredyffrin Public Library in Strafford and its branch in Paoli. They make decisions concerning staffing and funding of Library operations. You should stop by and see the facilities - browse the 77,000 volumes in the Strafford location and an additional 20,000 in Paoli, use the computer; and tap into the internet access. You can sit and read the paper or your favorite magazine and borrow records, cassettes and CDs. Municipal Authority Members of the Municipal Authority serve five-year terms and the purpose of the Authority is to provide funding for sanitary sewer and highway projects in the Township through the sale of Municipal Bonds. The Municipal Authority owns all the sanitary sewer facilities and leases them to the Township.

Park and Recreation Board Members of the Park and Recreation Board serve five-year terms and consist of nine volunteers, seven appointed by Tredyffrin Supervisors and two by the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District. The Board oversees the acquisition, development, and use of park sites and supervises park activities.

The mission of the Parks & Rec Board is to

enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages through parks, recreation programs, and open space preservation.

Pension Trustees The Trustees oversee the management of the Township's pension plans.

Planning Commission Members of the Planning Commission serve four-year terms and are authorized to prepare, update and oversee implementation of the Comprehensive Plan, Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance, and Zoning Ordinance, and to review land development and subdivision applications. Land development decisions by the Planning Commission are final, while the Board of Supervisors has final approval authority on all subdivision applications. Regular meetings, usually held on the third Thursday of the month, are formal meetings where applications are first heard and decisions or recommendations are made. The public is welcome to attend and comment on any matter on the agenda.

Zoning Hearing Board Members of the Zoning Hearing Board serve three-year terms and consist of three members and three alternate members.

Appeals for relief from decisions of the Zoning Officer and/or requirements in the Zoning Ordinance are handled by the Zoning Hearing Board. This is a quasi-judicial body whose decisions are not subject to the approval of the supervisors. Zoning Hearing Board meetings, which are open to the public, are usually held on the fourth Thursday of the month.

Public Works Corner The winter produced 9 snow/de-icing events to which the Public Works winter operations personnel responded. In comparison, the winter of 2014-2015 produced 19 snow/de-icing events.

The Highway Department will begin the 2017 Road Paving Program, which includes newly re-surfaced roadways, early this summer.

The Sewer Department maintains the underground sanitary sewer piping with daily cleaning and televising.

The Public Works Department and its staff look forward to spring and providing quality service to our residents and businesses.

The Winter Recreation Program experienced another successful year with 131 children enrolled.

In this new year, all 11 Township parks received new sign face lifts. The Tredyffrin Township Foundation for Parks and Recreation funded a new sign for the Westover Bird Sanctuary, depicting the events from the Devon Fireworks Factory explosion in 1930.

In late April/early May 2017, the Westover Bird Sanctuary, located on East Conestoga Road, will receive a new and improved entrance.

As of March 18th, all ball fields were opened.

Police Department News The Tredyffrin Twp. Police Department saw the retirement of Lt. Taro Landis (Administration Division) after a 29 year career with the agency. The Department also saw the retirement of Sgt. Timothy Barrar, a 30-year veteran of the Police Force.

He will be continuing his law enforcement career, having been named Chief of Police for Carlisle Borough Police Department in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Police Department News At the March meeting of the Board of Supervisors, Supt. Anthony Giaimo of the Tredyffrin Twp. Police Department announced the following promotions to the leadership team:

Sgt. Tyler Moyer and Cpl. James Slavin Tyler Moyer, a fourteen year law enforcement officer and twelve year veteran of the Department, was promoted to the rank of Sergeant (Patrol Operations) from the position of Corporal (Patrol Operations). Sgt. Moyer is a 1997 graduate of LaSalle University and a 2003 graduate of the Montgomery County Police Academy. He is a member of the Chester County Serious Crash Assistance Team, a certified Federal Motor Carrier Enforcer, and former member of the Chester County Regional Emergency Response Team (SWAT).

James Slavin, a fifteen year veteran of the Department, was promoted to the rank of Corporal (Patrol Operations) from the position of Class "A" Patrol Officer. Cpl. At that same meeting, the Board of Supervisors also gave special recognition to Superintendent Anthony Giaimo on his coming retirement after 27 years with the Department. Giaimo rose in the Agency from the rank of Patrol Officer to the top job, attaining the 1995 Officer of the Year, "Class "A" Officer in 1992, Sergeant in 1996, Lieutenant in 2007, and Acting Superintendent in 2011. He was appointed Superintendent after a nationwide search in 2012. Supt. Giaimo was recently installed as the President of the FBI National Academy Associates (Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter) and is the Chairman and Immediate Past President of the Chester County Police Chiefs Association.

Police Lieutenant Joseph Glatts was appointed by the Board of Supervisors as the Acting Superintendent of Police. Glatts is a 31-year law-enforcement veteran and was promoted from patrol sergeant to lieutenant in 2014. Lt. Glatts is a graduate of the Delaware County Municipal Police Academy and began his career with the Aston Borough Police Warren Kampf, State Representative of Department. He was sworn in as a Tredyffrin Pennsylvania's 157th Legislative District, Andy police officer in January 1988; was promoted Dinniman, State Senator of Pennsylvania's 19th to "Class A" patrolman in January 1991; and Senatorial District, Michelle Kichline of the was promoted to sergeant in November 2003.

Farewell to Anthony Giaimo, Superintendent of Police Greetings, Everyone.

For close to three decades, I have been honored to be a part of the greatest police department and community that I know, right here in Tredyffrin Township.

For the last half decade, I have had the chance to continue the professional legacy of Tredyffrin Township Police Department as the Superintendent of Police.

During my career I not only worked in every facet of policing, including SWAT, but I was fortunate to have met thousands of residents who I fondly call friends.

It was customary for me to spend many extra hours each week working, with my family visiting me here in the Township day and night. Incidentally, because of this, many folks, even today, think that I live in the Township.

During my tenure as Superintendent of Police: We reduced crime through policies, programs, and partnerships.

We worked as a team to create an even safer community.

Recognized in 2016 as the third safest community of our size within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

We enhanced the safety of all of our schools in the Township while engaging in real time safety drills which again were a "first' for the county and state.

In Drug Intervention Programs, we partnered with a number of concerned groups (such as ARCH and NOPE) in combating underage drinking and substance abuse. Together we initiated the first drug turn in box in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

We enhanced our communication and transparency through such things as our Crime Watch program and the recently added Twitter.

The list of advancements continue. But all advancements were accomplished as a team. As with any great team, it is only as strong and successful as its members.

I thank our wonderful Board of Supervisors for their dedication, support and true caring for the community and police department.

Most importantly for supporting me and my efforts.

I thank the professional and talented officers and staff of my police department for all of their dedication, respect of others, caring, sacrifices and willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty for all the right reasons.

I thank all of the department heads, Township staff and the Township Manager who all diligently worked with me so successfully as a team.

I thank all of my wonderful friends who I call the Tredyffrin Community for their support, friendship, and willingness to make our community great.

Beyond crime suppression, as President of the Chester County Chiefs of Police Association and FBI National Academy Associates, we created enhanced partnerships with Federal, Local and State Law Enforcement agencies, as well as further developed our community partnerships and outreach programs.

As 2017 is my retirement year, I am announcing that I will be in fact retiring this year. I look forward to staying in contact with everyone and watching over the police department and community that I love.

Our outreach programs, many of which were unique or a "first" for our county, consisted of: Citizen's Police Academy, Police Kids' Summer Camp, Police Learning Series, and many others that brought us closer to our wonderful community.

I can ensure everyone that during the next number of months I will oversee a very smooth transition in keeping up with the professional legacy of our department.

In 2015, we were honored to have a "grass roots" community group launch a huge support initiative which included "Thank You Tredyffrin Police" yard signs (some of which were spotted as far south as Florida!) and a "first" for a Blue Tree Lighting Ceremony in the center of Paoli.

In closing, I would like to thank you all and say that Tredyffrin will always have a place in my heart.

Stormwater-Friendly Lawns & Gardens You can curb water pollution by starting in your own back yard!

Stormwater, rain that runs off hard surfaces and eventually into local waterways, is a major and fast growing source of pollution that affects every watershed. This runoff may carry sediment, nutrients from lawns, waste from farms and pets, oil and litter from streets, and other contaminants into streams or storm drains. To cover the costs of managing stormwater's impact on the environment, some local governments have recently established programs that impose fees on property owners, who play a crucial role in limiting water pollution right in their own yards.

"When you add up the combined efforts of thousands of individual homeowners, the cumulative improvement on stormwater runoff and water quality can be quite substantial," says Al Todd, Executive Director of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, "but it can be hard to find the right information to get started."

A "stormwater-friendly" lawn is one that can absorb rainwater and does not harm local streams due to the over-application of chemicals. Likewise, a "stormwater-friendly" garden is one that uses organic compost as

fertilizer to amend soil and minimizes or eliminates the use of chemicals. Reducing chemical applications and encouraging infiltration will help stabilize local water flows and also maintain natural nutrient levels in streams. Stormwater-friendly lawns and gardens will help you save money on fertilizers and time on upkeep once they become established.

The following lawn and garden tips will help property owners partner with their community to manage stormwater and battle water pollution.

Getting a start in your own back yard

Following the steps below will not only help protect local streams and rivers but can result in direct and substantial cost savings to you, the homeowner.

Set mower height to 3 inches or higher. Taller grass slows the rate of runoff and produces a

deeper, denser root system, which will absorb more water, prevent erosion, and suppress weeds. Deeper roots also have access to more water stored in the ground and can reduce the need for irrigation during droughts.

Retain grass clippings and chopped leaves onsite. A mulch-mower is ideal for retaining and spreading clippings on your lawn. The clippings decompose quickly, provide important nutrients for your lawn, and settle to create an organic layer on the soil that encourages stormwater infiltration. This technique can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for nitrogen fertilizers.

Also, by spreading grass clippings on your lawn, you can reduce the amount of fertilizer needed.

Keep clippings and chopped leaves out of streams, off the street, and out of storm drains. If mulching is not possible, bag the clippings and store them in a compost area where the organic material can be used as a fertilizer later. Blowing them onto a street or into storm drains deposits the clippings directly into local streams, where they decompose and become major pollutants by increasing nitrogen to unsafe levels for fish and other aquatic life.

Stormwater-Friendly Lawns & Gardens Many lawns do not need fertilizer because they are already fertile or you have carried out the previously discussed practices. Using no fertilizer is ideal for the bay's health, but if your lawn is thin or has bare spots, you should consider fertilizing it.

A dense vegetated cover is the most "stormwater-friendly" lawn so take the following steps to determine if fertilizer is necessary for your property: 1) Test your soil or consult a local professional or certified applicator. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to fertilizer. Needs vary drastically based on soil texture, pH levels, and nutrient levels. In fact, soil tests can reveal that lawns may be suffering from micronutrient deficiency, and standard chemical fertilizers may not alleviate the problem. Identifying these needs will reduce unnecessary applications, create a healthier lawn faster, and reduce your long-term costs.

A stormwater-friendly garden

Home gardens can contribute a considerable amount of nutrients and other pollution to streams and other water bodies if not cared for in a responsible way. This mainly applies to fertilizers and pesticides so here are some options: Garden fertilizers: Organic alternatives to chemicals include compost or manure.

Compost can be created in your own back yard, is free, and contains the many nutrients needed for your vegetables. Also, be sure to apply organic fertilizers before planting to prevent runoff.

Pesticides: When it comes to pesticides, identify the pest and research your options.

Many insects are harmless to people and play an important role in maintaining a healthy lawn or garden ecosystem. If there is a problem, however, identify the exact pest you have. Consult an expert because there are many nonchemical alternatives to controlling pests. Pesticides can infiltrate the ground water, contaminate drinking supplies, and severely harm downstream ecosystems if applied incorrectly or unnecessarily.

In the long run, little actions, such as taking a stormwater-friendly approach to your garden and lawn, will have a big impact as all of us work together to protect our water's quality.

2) Maximize the slow-release nitrogen in your fertilizer. Typically called "water insoluble nitrogen," or WIN, on fertilizer bags, slow-release nitrogen limits nutrient runoff and exportation. This should be applied in the spring, not autumn, to provide a steady source of nutrients throughout the growing season.

3) Start with low amounts or fewer applications: Your lawn may achieve its ideal coverage and growth with reduced amounts of fertilizer, saving time and money.

4) Apply only during the growing season and check the weather. Wait until the grass begins growing in March to fertilize and avoid fertilizing after October. Fertilizing during a lawn's dormant season increases the risk of the chemicals running off into streams or leaching into your water table because root systems are less active.

Additionally, do not fertilize before it rains since most of it will wash off your lawn.

5) Do not fertilize or use pesticides within 15 to 20 feet of a stream and use riparianspecific herbicides, if necessary.

Maintaining this distance will help keep chemicals out of the stream. Also, consider establishing a natural riparian buffer, instead.

6) Sweep any granulated chemicals off hard surfaces and back onto your lawn immediately: Your walkway, driveway, patio, or road is often a quick route to drainage pipes that discharge into local streams so make sure they're kept clean of chemicals.

When I started writing this article, I was boasting a little about dodging Old Man Winter's usual wrath of seasonal snowfall. I'm not sure whether there was any record of snow accumulation at all prior to the March storm; maybe a dusting at the very most.

Remember those 30 foot poplars reaching out over the street? Or the arborvitae growing crazily along the property line or into the right of way? Well, allow me to offer everyone encouragement to seriously consider taking advantage of this windfall and, finally, getting our properties in order, like we've wanted to for so many years.

Anyway, the snow came, it went, and we survived. Temps are back in the 60s, the snow is gone, spring has arrived, and again, the big winter snow bullet was dodged. Which brings me to something we should seriously consider taking advantage of as a result.

Who knows, it may look so nice when finished, that you may want to scratch the shore altogether and entertain all summer in your resurrected back yard oasis. Oh, and be the envy of neighbors that weren't as savvy as you.

Don't Let Mosquitoes Take a Bite Out of Your Summer For many people, it's one of the best times of the year. Summertime is quickly approaching and so is the season of patios and decks, grilling, seemingly endless yard work, and afternoons in the pool.

But as with most good things, there is a catch. Or should I say a buzz? A teaspoon of standing water combined with the warm summer weather creates the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Health Concerns We all know that being bitten by mosquitoes is no fun, leaving you itchy and irritated for days. But the annoyance your family suffers from mosquitoes and other biting insects can be more than inconvenient it can be deadly.

Insect-borne illnesses are a cause for concern.

Zika Virus made headlines last year with it's U.S. landfall in July and is still a serious concern in 2017. So far, over 5,000 cases have been reported in the United States, 222 of them locally transmitted. The virus is linked to microcephaly and Guillain-Barre

syndrome, two neurological birth defects that can be transmitted to the baby from the mother during pregnancy. The most common form of transmission, however, is through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito.

Common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). The illness associated with Zika is usually very mild, typically lasting several days and rarely severe enough to require hospitalization.

While Zika virus might still hold the spotlight this summer, other mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile and Dengue Fever are also active dangers. As of January 2017, 47 states reported West Nile infections, with over 2,000 confirmed cases. Many infected individuals do not exhibit symptoms, but those who do show signs such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, and rash. Severe cases can result in encephalitis or meningitis, but those are rare (less than 1% of those infected).

Unfortunately, there is no treatment or vaccine for Zika or West Nile virus at this time, so the best way to protect yourself is to guard against mosquito bites.

Keep swimming pools clean, properly circulated and filtered. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their sides when they are not being used.

Repair leaky outdoor faucets.

Cut grass and shrubs short, as adult mosquitoes gather to rest in shady, cool areas. Keep your yard weed-free and avoid overgrown vegetation.

Green Ribbon Native Plant® Selections For 2017 Each year the Horticulture Committee at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens in Devon selects three plants to be designated as Green Ribbon Native Plants ®. The selected plants for this year are: Hubricht's Bluestar (Amsonia hubrichtii) This beautiful clump-forming, herbaceous perennial has many noteworthy characteristics making it an excellent choice as a Green Ribbon Native Plant ®. Hubricht's Bluestar is not preferred by deer.

It is known for its elegant powdery "blue star" shaped flowers, which grow in clusters at the ends of the stems and make an appearance in late spring around April and last until the end of May, sometimes even longer. It is also notable that Hubricht's Bluestar is the preferred nectar source for Mourning Cloaks and other early butterflies.

Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) The common Rose Mallow or Swamp Mallow is an upright shrub-like herbaceous perennial that is commonly found in moist areas such as marshes or lake shores. This plant is unique because you can bring those showy, tropical-looking hibiscus flowers into home gardens. Petals are normally white, pink or red or some variation in between. Though an individual flower may only last a short period of time, the plant itself continues to bloom through late summer into fall. The Rose Mallow can bring quite the accent to any garden and it is recommended to plant a group of 3 or more for a visually appealing effect.

Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana) The Obedient Plant or False Dragonhead is a very fun plant that has some very unique qualities. The Obedient Plant's common name comes from the flower's unique, pliable nature. The flower heads can be pushed along the axis of the stem and will remain wherever they are moved. This makes the plant very useful for cut flowers or flower arrangements. A common characteristic of this family is a square stem. The flowers are pale lilac with a tubular shape and snapdragon appearance. The flower spikes bloom from bottom to top from late June to September. Obedient Plants live in a wide variety of habitats from open meadows to stream banks. This plant can tolerate moist soils with poor drainage or soils on the drier end of the spectrum. The nectar of this plant is desirable to many species of butterflies and even attracts hummingbirds. Overall this is an excellent plant and can really give a show in the late summer or early autumn.

Specifically, these include the large leafed rhododendrons created by John Doppel and the evergreen azaleas created by Joe Klimavicz. When it comes to native, deciduous azaleas though, it isn't quite as straightforward.

One of the greatest benefits of participating in American Public Gardens Association's Plant Collections Network (PCN) is that it encourages you to think strategically about your curatorial practices, and collaborate with other like-minded organizations to ensure that plant genetics are being preserved. As we begin to focus on genetics, the provenance, or location from which the seed used to grow the plants was collected, becomes very important. Understanding this, we have had two exciting opportunities to add large numbers of known-provenance deciduous native azaleas to our collection.

The first was through a very generous gift of nearly 100 known-provenance native azaleas from our friends at Mt. Cuba Center. In total, there were 9 different species and 17 different accessions. These included some pretty exciting specimens such as a shinyleaved selection of R. arborescens (sweet azalea); a larger-than-normal flowering selection of R. colemanni (Red Hills azalea), a species only recently discovered; and the very late-blooming R. arborescens var.

prunifolium (plumleaf azalea). The donation also included 4 different accessions of flame azalea, R. austrinum which are now planted under the pine trees near the pond. With 17 seed-grown flame azaleas, it will be interesting to see the genetic variation which can lead to variations in growth form and even flower color. Yes, even though they are the same species, and even though flame azaleas are typically orange, some could end up being nearly yellow and some could end up being nearly red.

The second opportunity came from a seed collecting trip to the Southeastern US by Executive Director, Harold Sweetman.

Harold accompanied Tom Clark from Polly Hill Arboretum who was in search of the rare Pinkshell Azalea (R. vaseyi) for a research study. Of course, no good plantsman can venture into the woods in search of one thing and not end up with some others. Harold brought back 23 total accessions of 9 different species. The Arboretum's staff grew the plants on a light rack until they were ready to be pricked out and potted up. Now, there are hundreds of azaleas being grown on for

Tredyffrin Township Libraries are proud to offer a reading program for young adult readers! Young readers wishing to expand their reading lens beyond the United States and read "Around the World" should give it a try! Complete the program and receive a special award from the Library.

Come to the Tredyffrin Library this summer for a class with Marylyn E. Calabrese, Ph.D., writing coach and teacher. She has helped thousands of students in preparing successful college application essays.

Requirements Rising 7th-12th grade students Read at least seven books totaling 1000+ pages Books must represent seven or more distinct countries, cultures, or regions Each book must be of reasonable literary merit and by a unique author At least 1 book must be from a non-U.S. author

Dr. Calabrese is the former chairperson of the Conestoga High School English Department.

Her educational background includes an A.B. from Bryn Mawr College, an MAT from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in Teaching Writing from the University of Pennsylvania.

In our backyard and near Valley Forge Park, the Wharton Esherick Museum is new to Tredyffrin Public Library this year. The museum, a National Historic Landmark, was the studio of the craftsman-artist Wharton Esherick (1887-1970). The buildings, from their structural forms down to the door handles and light pulls, were designed and built by Wharton Esherick to create a complete artistic environment. The Museum is open for tours on weekends and for groups of 5 or more on weekdays. All tours require a reservation.

"It's like Christmas to open a box; you never know what you're going to find," said Barb Alexander, a long-time volunteer. "This is a community of readers who want to recycle their books by passing them along to the next reader."

When did the shop open? A group of Friends in the sweltering summer of 2009 transformed a large storage room on the lower level of the Library. Mike Benning was the President of the Friends; Elsie Mullin, Lani Fabrere, Bill Dillon, all members of the Board of Directors, got it started. In 2010, they named it Red Fox Book Shop.

Some of the books go as far as Jamasi, Ghana, when RFBS donated to a family who started a library there. Recently, David Linskens of West Chester received a donation of 50 children's books for his Eagle Scout project. "We've sent books to VA Hospitals, to libraries and schools from Philadelphia to Alabama. We make sure all the donations we receive go to another worthy cause when we don't have any room left," said Kate Currigan, President of the Friends.

Because dogs perceive the world around them through their sense of smell, taking your dog for a run will benefit his physical health as well as enrich his mind by opening him up to new and exciting scents. Dogs who are wellbehaved on leash make excellent exercise partners and walks more enjoyable for everyone. Working on leash skills not only makes walking your dog easier for you, but increases his chances of getting to explore more places with you because you'll be more likely to bring him along. Here are some basic tips to help make walking your dog more fun:

The Right Tools!

Before you take the first step out of the door, you need to make sure you have the right tools to walk your dog. Every dog should be walked on a standard four-to-eight foot leash. Avoid retractable leashes in public, as they can cause harm if they fail to lock or break while you are out with your dog. Next, you need to dress your dog appropriately with identifying tags and the right walking harness or collar for your dog. If your dog pulls on or tightens the leash when he's

excited, a standard flat collar is not right for you. Constant tightening on your dog's neck can lead to injury and actually teaches your dog to pull harder as he associates the tightness with walking forward. Try to use a no-pull harness that can help you teach your dog to walk on a looser leash. Another great option is a face collar which can control your dog similar to the way a bridle controls a horse; wherever the face goes the body follows. While many people associate face collars with muzzles, they are actually very different and still allow your dog to fully open and close their jaws. Always be sure to fit a harness or face collar correctly and spend some time indoors getting your dog used to the new gear before taking the show on the road.

Teaching Your Dog To Walk With You

Although dogs are social animals, they do not naturally walk in line with each other.

Therefore, walking close to you on a leash will take some time and practice. The number one thing to keep in mind when training your dog is that what you reinforce will be repeated, even if you did not reinforce on purpose. Even if you think they are being choked or restricted by their collar and should be learning to avoid that discomfort, you are reinforcing pulling by allowing your dog to move forward. After you make sure you have the right gear and that it fits properly, teach your dog that looking at you or "checking in" is awesome! Take a few small, tasty treats and hold the leash loosely in one hand.

Let your dog know you have treats and reward any calm behavior at the door before you even step outside. Initially you might feel like a pez dispenser feeding your dog for every check in and glance but it'll be worth it when you have a well-behaved walking buddy. Once you are out of the door, try to be aware of every time your dog acts and think if you want the behavior repeated. If the answer is yes, reward your dog.

Reinforced behavior is repeated, so if you like it, reward it!

During the acquisition phase of learning, your dog needs a lot of reinforcement to really learn a behavior and make it stick. If your dog makes a mistake or behaves in a way that you do not want to see again, do not reinforce the behavior by doing anything that your dog might enjoy. This includes continuing to walk. Each step you take, you are teaching your dog something. Only move forward or offer a reward for behavior you like. In time you will see that the reinforced behaviors occur much more frequently. Clear and consistent communication is how you will teach your dog to repeat the wanted behavior. Heel walking, or formal obedience walking with your dog right next to you, can be taught once your dog understands loose leash walking. Keep in mind that smelling is half the fun for your pooch. Try not to force them to walk in a heel position for more than 10% of any walk or they will not get the most out of the mental work out.

Beware Of The Three Ds!

With any behavior, we always want to be aware of the three Ds that can sabotage you and your dog: distance, distraction and duration. Whenever you are working on a new skill with your dog, you should try to do so in a low distraction environment where you can work one-on-one with him to set him up for success. Always be sure to know what you want to work on before you ever get your dog in on the game. Over time as your dog shows that he understands your cues or commands, you can begin to methodically and slowly add distance, distractions and duration to help your dog learn to generalize his behavior. Pick a calm area or even your own yard to start teaching your dog to keep a loose leash before going out to a busy trail or store. Keep training sessions short and fun. If you need your dog to get a little more exercise than a short walk allows, try to plan for a game of fetch in a fenced-in area or check out your local dog parks and dog daycare. Take the time to really teach your dog the right way to walk on a leash and you will enjoy years of easy fun walks together. Happy walking!

Stay Safe During A Power Outage Before a storm hits or an outage occurs, it's good to be prepared...

Keep PECO's emergency telephone number, 1-800-841-4141, handy with other emergency numbers near the telephone.

Have at least one standard non-cordless telephone or a cellular phone available to make calls.

Call PECO at 1-800-841-4141 as soon as possible. Remember, call volume can become very busy during storms and the automated, interactive system allows the company to accept thousands of calls at a time and get your information to the right people faster. When more customers call, we can better manage our response efforts. Outages can also be reported online.

Have a flashlight with fresh batteries on each floor of your home.

Avoid using candles; a battery-operated lantern would be a better bet. If using candles, never leave them unattended.

Have a battery-powered clock.

What to do when the lights go out Key steps to take...

Check the fuse or circuit breaker box to see if a fuse tripped inside the home.

Check with the neighbors to see if their power is out.

Turn off and unplug most appliances to prevent an electrical overload when power is restored, and keep a couple of lights on so you'll know when service is back.

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Resist the urge to frequently check on foods. Move meats, cheese, milk etc. into the freezer compartment since it will stay colder longer. If the freezer is partially full, it can keep meat frozen for up to 24 hours and up to 48 hours when full. Fill the freezer and refrigerator with bottles filled with water to occupy more space. Wrap the refrigerator/freezer in a blanket to keep it insulated and preserve foods longer.

Dry ice, available at some retail stores, can be used to preserve frozen foods for longer than 24 hours but presents safety concerns. Dry ice is hazardous material and must be handled with care because it can cause severe burns. Food that directly touches dry ice can get freezer burns. Dry ice should not be used in a smaller cooler with food or medicines that are needed and could become frozen.

Have a supply of bottled water and easyto-prepare, non-perishable foods available for extended outages. Make sure you have enough water for drinking and cooking.

Have sensitive electronic appliances, like microwave ovens, televisions and computers, protected with a voltage surge suppressor. The suppressor can eliminate the surge from lightning, fallen poles or other accidents before the surge can enter equipment and protects valuables from damage. If appliances are not protected, unplug them before a storm.

Stay Safe During A Power Outage At night, cover your windows with drapes or blankets to minimize heat loss.

If you have a fireplace, never use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start or quicken a fire. Always keep a screen around an open flame, and don't close the damper while ashes are still hot.

Never use a gas range for room heating.

This can be dangerous.

Seek shelter at a warming center like the Township Municipal Building, friend or family if home temperatures fall too low.

Never use a generator indoors or in an attached garage. Just like your automobile, a portable generator uses an internal combustion engine that emits deadly carbon monoxide. Be sure to place the generator where exhaust fumes will not enter the house. Only operate it outdoors in a well-ventilated, dry area, away from air intakes to the home, and protected from direct exposure to rain and snow, preferably under a canopy, open shed or carport.

Overloading your generator can seriously damage your valuable appliances and electronics.

Use the proper power cords. Plug individual appliances into the generator using heavy-duty, outdoor-rated cords with a wire gauge adequate for the appliance load. Overloaded cords can cause fires or equipment damage. Don't use extension cords with exposed wires or worn shielding.

Read and adhere to the manufacturer's instructions for safe operation. Don't cut corners when it comes to safety. Carefully read and observe all instructions in your portable electric generator's owner manual.

Wear extra layers of clothing and a hat to prevent the loss of body heat.

Safe use of generators...

Don't connect your generator directly to your home's wiring. Connecting a portable electric generator directly to your household wiring can be deadly to you and others. A generator that is directly connected to your home's wiring can "backfeed" onto the power lines connected to your home. Utility transformers can then "step-up" or increase this backfeed to thousands of volts - enough to kill a utility lineman making outage repairs a long way from your house.

Turn off all equipment powered by the generator before shutting down your generator.

When power is restored...

Wait a few minutes and plug appliances back in one at a time.

Never plug a portable electric generator into a regular household outlet. Plugging a generator into a regular household outlet can energize "dead" power lines and injure neighbors or utility workers.

Make a list of items you wish you had and restock for the next emergency.

Don't overload the generator. Do not operate more appliances and equipment than the output rating of the generator.

Senior Lifestyles Tips for traveling with persons with dementia.

Carry snacks/beverages and activities your loved one will enjoy, such as music.

Plan extra rest periods, including a daily nap if needed.

If flying, schedule your trip for less busy travel times to avoid crowds. Travel early in the day to decrease the chance of delays and book nonstop flights if possible. Have your loved one sit in the window or middle seat to decrease chances of wandering.

Maintain as close to a normal wake/sleep schedule as possible.

If driving, seat the person in the back seat with the door locked, seat belt on and use child proof locks. Play music that the person enjoys. If the person becomes agitated, stop driving!

Traveling to someplace familiar may be more enjoyable than going somewhere new.

Allow extra time and avoid being rushed which can cause increased anxiety or agitation.

You should carry a photograph of your loved one with you to help identify them if they become lost and a card which identifies you as a caregiver.
