Hey key-uties!!

Welcome to another month of service and hello to new members! Hopefully the first two months haven’t been all that stressful for you! Thank you to all those who attended this month’s events and it’s crazy to see the number of you guys that come to volunteer and raise awareness to these causes! Whether it was to clean up parks or making strides for breast cancer, you are making a difference every minute! This month we are also doing Trick or Treat for UNICEF which helps kids that need more than candy!

HI KEY CLUBBERS, Welcome to October! This month was packed with action as many of you gave back to the community through the seven different Key Club events offered. During the first weekend, we helped beautify and clean up Hoover Park. Then, many of you supported worthy causes such as Alzheimer's, eating disorders, lupus, and breast cancer by participating in walks in Queens and throughout New York City. I am extremely proud of members who continued to show to their dedication despite unfavorable weather conditions.

(Make sure to dress warmly for future events :D) Lastly, we ended the months with my personal favorite and one of the most popular events: Light the Nights.

Over 60 members showed up and helped light up Flushing Meadows-Corona Park with lanterns. October has been an amazing month of service and I hope we continue this in the months to come.

Our childhood consisted of continuous visits to the park. Whether you new the kids you were playing tag with or not, you would always eave the local park happy and fulfilled with great memories. This is why I volunteered in “It’s My Park Day!” The experience overall was eally great. I got to know my fellow harrisites even better than before s we raked the leaves, got rid of hazardous tree branches and dug up oles to plant beds of beautiful flowers. It was very rewarding when we were treated with pizza and desserts afterwards. A remarkably njoyable Saturday it was!

In October, I participated in The Walk to Cure Lupus, which was a meaningful and enriching learning experience to me. To begin with, some pleasant surprises I encountered, in the beginning, were the free food and souvenirs.

However, it was nonetheless an extremely cold and rainy day; the odds were not in our favor.

Although this may be true, my group and I did not enable this unfortunate condition to become a hindrance in our endeavor; we still managed to walk at least one mile together in contentment and appreciation of the event. Not to mention, I was surrounded by people who made a difference in the world by walking the mile and advocating for the same cause that we did. I was able to feel and consequently absorb the electric atmosphere that was present that day; I witnessed numerous people donating money and wearing purple-colored merchandise to express their passion and support for a cure for Lupus. As can be readily perceived, I definitely learned a lot in merely a few hours, with this event forever leaving a mark on me and the many events to come.

Walk to Cure Lupus October 13, 2018

The Townsend Harris Key Club, as well as other Key Clubs in Division 8, went to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on October 13, 2018 for the Walk to Cure Lupus. Lupus, or SLE, is an inflammatory disease that can affect the skin, joints, kidney, heart, lungs, blood cells, and brain. So far, there is no cure for the disease so the purpose of the walk was to raise awareness and show support for people who are affected by lupus. Despite the weather conditions to which it was raining, we were all happy to help. When we got to Pier 86, there was still time before the walk, which started at 8:00 am. There were many booths that handed out free items such as scarfs, totes, pens, and phone rings. We also received hot chocolate and muffins. The walk itself took around an hour as we walked through many piers. After completing the walk, we were allowed to go back in the museum. Overall, the event was a fun experience, and it was amazing to see everyone rally together in support to find a cure for lupus.

On October 21st , Townsend Harris Key Club , as well as other Key Club programs from other schools , went to Flushing Meadows Corona Park to make strides against breast cancer . This event inspired many people and paid tributes to people who have been and are diagnosed with breast cancer . It was great to see everyone wear pink as support . Despite the cold , the event was very fun as it was very motivational . Not only were we able to connect with our friends outside of school , we were able to get hours while showing support to our community !

Making Strides Against reast Cancer

Light the night was an amazing event that inspired many people.

The ceremony of different lanterns being held up helped make everyone feel connected. Also, the speeches that were spoken by the many people who were affected by Leukemia were very moving and inspiring. The event made everyone who attended feel the support and energy of everyone who was there and helped raise awareness for the cancer, Leukemia. Not only did we raise awareness for leukemia, we also made connections wit new people and our connections with our current friends became stronger.
