Hey key-uties!!

This newsletter is long overdue but I hope you still take a minute to look back on our events in the summer and see what we were up to. But instead of doing seasonal newsletter like I was planning before, I’ve decided to make one for each month so you guys can all stay updated for the events in the next month. Thank you guys all for your service and for attending all the events this month! I hope you all are managing the new school year and welcome new members!

Hi Key Clubbers,

Welcome to another year of service!

I hope all of you had a fun and relaxing summer break. I am so excited to meet new members and reacquaint old ones. This month, we have many exciting events planned for you guys. We will be raising awareness for Autism and Huntington's disease through walks, celebrating Chinese culture by volunteering at Autumn Moon festivals, and encouraging runners by helping run the racecourse.

There is an event for everyone and, I hope you can take a few hours of out your weekend to volunteer. Key Club is only getting started (: Yours in service,

Our fellow Kiwanis Club of Cambria Heights invited our Key Club board to help set up, serve food, and more at their Everyday Hero Community Awards Lunch. There, Kiwanians recognized the community contributions by individuals who motivate others and instilling positive values or taking action when no one else steps in. Our Key Club board were given the opportunity able to meet and connect with fellow Kiwanians.

The Team Hope Walk program is HDSA’s signature grassroots fundraising campaign designed to provide hope and support for those touched by Huntington’s disease. Key Clubbers participated in this walk to raise awareness to this devastating disease.

AUTISM SPEAKS Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest autism fundraising event dedicated to improving the lives of people with autism. Powered by the love of parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, relatives, and supporters, the funds raised help ensure people of all abilities have access to the tools needed to lead ‘their best lives’. Key Clubbers walked in the interest of raising awareness to autism.

Walk Now for Autism Speaks was a really fun event that I attended with my friends. We got to Pier 17 at 8 in the morning and had time to walk around the tents set up before the walk began.

There were a lot tables set up from various foundations that were handing out promotional items and hosting activities such as scratch art.

There was also a photo booth and they were giving out fruits for breakfast. It was very inspirational to see so many people come together to support and improve the lives of those affected by autism. Overall I would say I really enjoyed the walk because the weather was really nice and the location of the Seaport had a pleasant atmosphere.

The Walk Now for Autism Speaks was an amazing experience. The weather of the day of the walk was perfect for participating in it. When we arrived at the place, each person was given poms-poms to cheer on each other. There were also various booths that had games and information to learn about autism.

Additionally, we were able to enjoy a stunning view of the ocean. The event was also kind enough to provide us breakfast, since it was early in the morning. I got to meet many people and learn new things about autism. It was definitely a one in a lifetime experience.

CHINATOWN MID AUTUMN FESTIVAL FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 22, 2018

Better Chinatown held one of the two Autumn Moon Parade Festival in Chinatown on September 22th, 2018. Volunteers helped with setting up, running the festival activities, and breaking down. Better Chinatown's goal for the event was to bring the community together and give them an event to enjoy.

I really enjoyed the experience that I got from volunteering at the festival. I enjoyed helping out and guiding the mascot and handing out souvenirs (keychains, etc.) to the people attending the festival. Many people and their children came up to us to take photos with the mascots, and I was happy to accommodate them. Everyone looked extremely happy to be there and having a great time, and it was captivating to see how their culture was being celebrated. The singing, dancing, and arts (decorations, dragon, etc.) were really enjoyable to see, and I wished I stayed there longer!

Better Chinatown held its second Autumn Moon Festival in Brooklyn on September 23, 2018. Key Clubbers helped with setting up, running the festival activities, and breaking down.

They additionally joined the parade and handed out USA and China flags to the audience around them.

The Autumn Moon Festival and Parade was a very fun experience. During the festival, we started out by helping set up tents, and later moving on to passing out flyers to people in the area. We also had the chance to dress up in costumes to greet and take pictures with people, and I got to dress up in a semi-terrifying bunny costume. On the day of the parade, we helped pass out American and Chinese flags to attendees, as well as festive bags.

Being able to help out at this event not only provided an amusing memory but also gave me the chance to experience the city’s festival for the first time.

NYCRUNS Governors Island

September 29

The 5k and 10k held by NYCRUNS in Governors Island allowed Key Clubbers to earn $50 in race credits per person that were donated to charity upon their decision. They made sure runners stayed in the running lane, assisted in the setup and breakdown of the water and Gatorade stations along the course, helped out with the food table, and assisted in cleaning and breakdown as needed.

Governor's Run was a 5k run held on Governor's Island. To volunteer, we woke up early to meet at Flushing in order arrive at the ferry station in Brooklyn on time. When reaching the volunteer site, we were immediately given neon vests and started to help set up the run. We set the tables full of bagels, fruits, Gatorade, and water for when the runner finish their run. We also guided them to these tables after the end of the race. Although we woke up early, the experience was very fun. We shared bagels and had many chances to take photos.

Governor's Run was a very good event with many rewarding factors.

The governors run was my first event in Key Club. I had to wake up at 4:30 just so I can catch the first ferry at 7:00 to Governors Island. We helped set up the tables and foods. There were a large amount of cups that had to be filled with water and Gatorade for the runners. It was truly inspiring to see all of the people running the 5k and 10k. As they rushed to the finish line, we were there handing out water and food.

All in all, this event was quite an experience besides the soreness from pouring large gallons of water.

SEPTEMBER 29, 2018

LION DANCE COMPETITION Better Chinatown held its second Autumn Moon Festival in Brooklyn on September 23, 2018. Key Clubbers helped with setting up, running the festival activities, and breaking down. They additionally joined the parade and handed out USA and China flags to the audience around them.

This was my first time going to a lion dance competition. It was a new experience, and even though it was really hot that day, it was really fun.

When we first got there, we helped bring supplies and set up the tents and chairs for the guest and performers, and they all hide their own unique uniforms and lion costumes. Right before the performance started, we had to hand out flyers to people and ask them to come to watch the performance. Many people from seniors to babies all came to watch and enjoy the competition. During the performance, we were able to see many props used like stools, and we were also able to see very cool tricks. Even though I wasn’t able to see the end of the performance the experience was very memorable. I was able to meet new people and hang out with my friends for a good cause. I would recommend this event again for more people to help and watch.
