Most people you talk to in small towns, all across the United States, have a fond memory of the YMCA. I grew up in a very small town, called Rushsylania, Ohio, which did not have a YMCA. Every year it was a real treat when we heard that we were going swimming at the “Y” in Lima every winter with our church youth group! What a special time it was to see all of the fun things we could do when we visited the “Lima YMCA”! We played pool, dodgeball or basketball in the gym, and always capped it all off at the indoor pool of all things---what an adventure!
As I grew to have a family of my own, and was deciding where we wanted to raise our families, I came to appreciate the value of a YMCA in a town when we came to a final choice. A YMCA has a rich and historic reputation as a place for families, in a friendly, warm, safe environment where they can enjoy time together doing things that they may not have the resources to enjoy at home. That is how I will always remember the “Y” and have come to utilize it as a great resource and “go-to” place for my family for all sorts of resources and activities focused on family fun and activity.
The YMCA of Mount Vernon has a rich history going clear back to 1907 of bringing families together in Mount Vernon and continues that tradition today! When you talk about fun focal points in Knox County today, you need not go any further than to the YMCA of Mount Vernon. Having always enjoyed a strong relationship with the business community, churches and other volunteer organizations, business leaders in town have always stepped up to support the “Y” as can be exhibited in their beautiful facility. Bob Denzer, who served as executive director for 54 years, shepherding the organization through a number of renovations and program expansions, cemented the charitable organization as a leader for family fun for folks throughout central Ohio. This legacy of support for the YMCA continues under the direction of Nick Clark.
If you have not visited the YMCA recently, you are missing out on a great opportunity to seek out resources for fun and fitness that you could never imagine could be available in your hometown of Mount Vernon!
