Sen. Bateman Announces Decision Not to Seek Reelection

After more than 38 years of dedicated public service, Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex) on Jan. 27 announced that he will not seek reelection to the State Senate. Bateman will serve out the remainder of his term in Legislative District 16, which will conclude in January 2022. “After careful consideration and with the support of my family, I have made the difficult decision not to seek reelection to the State Senate. As a lifelong resident of Somerset County, it has been an honor to spend nearly 40 years serving the community I am proud to call home,” said Senator Bateman. “I can’t begin to express how much I will miss serving our constituents. However, our state is still

Neshanic Station Named a Great Place in NJ

Branchburg Township officials submitted an application nominating Neshanic Station to the American Planning Association - New Jersey Chapter’s “Great Places in NJ” and won for “Great Neighborhood.” (https://greatplacesnj.org/) “Great Places in New Jersey represent the gold standard of exemplary character, quality and planning. These places have a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement and a vision for tomorrow,” according to the website. Branchburg Township Administrator Greg Bonin provided the following information about the “Great Neighborhood: Neshanic Station, Branchburg Township:” Neshanic Station is a 112-acre, unincorporated community in Continued on page 9

coping with a pandemic and I am committed to using my remaining time in office to help the countless residents who are in desperate need of our support.” “Although my time in elected office is coming to a close, I will always be a fierce advocate for the people of New Jersey. I’ll never stop fighting to make the Garden State a better place for our kids and grandkids. I look forward to finding new and exciting ways to give back to our neighbors in need,” Bateman added. Bateman has served the 16th district in the New Jersey State Legislature since 1994, when he was first elected to the New Jersey General Assembly, where he served seven consecutive terms, ending in 2007. He began serving in the New Jer-

sey State Senate in 2008, where he currently serves as Deputy Whip on the Senate Republican Leadership team. Bateman also currently serves on the State Senate Environment and Energy, Judiciary and Education Committees. As the longtime ranking Republican member of the Senate Environment and Energy Committee, Bateman sponsored landmark legislation that created a long-term funding source for open space and farmland preservation, championed historical preservation efforts, and worked to safeguard clean air and clean water for future New Jersey residents. Some of his other legislative achievements include laws that reduced the cost of auto insurance premiums for policyholders, a

grant program to provide thermal imaging cameras to fire departments statewide, and bipartisan protections to strengthen crime victims’ rights. Bateman added that before he leaves office, he will continue to fight to see that his pending bipartisan legislation, “Timothy J. Piazza’s Law” (S-84) which would increase penalties for hazing on New Jersey’s college campuses, becomes law. Bateman, a father of four and a former Mayor of Branchburg, added he will always treasure the opportunities he had to meet with local students, noting that he will remember his classroom visits as some of his favorite days in office. Throughout his tenure in the Legislature, Bateman has been known for his ability to forge bipartisan compromises and reach across the aisle to enact policies that could benefit the people of New Jersey. “I have always believed that government works best when we put people before politics. Good legislators should strive to be good listeners, follow their conscience and vote with the voices of the people they serve in mind. It is my hope that bipartisanship will continue to thrive in the halls of the New Jersey Statehouse long after I cast my

final vote in the Senate chamber,” Bateman added. “I am beyond grateful to have had the privilege to work with so many passionate legislators and advocates on both sides of the aisle over the years. I would also like to thank my wonderful family, friends, and staff for all of their support and hard work.” After he concludes his term in 2022, Bateman, who just welcomed his first grandchild, looks forward to spending more time with his family and will continue to be active in community service and at the law firm where he serves as a partner. Draft Top a Shark Tank Success

Branchburg native Armand Ferranti of Long Branch and Patrick Parizo of Hayes, VA, appeared on the Feb. 12 episode of “Shark Tank” to pitch Draft Top, a patented can opener designed “to turn any aluminum can of beer into a draft beer experience.” The 4-blade device removes the top of most 8 to 16 oz aluminum cans (soda, seltzer, canned wine) and leaves a smooth edge. The entrepreneurs explained to Sharks Kevin O’Leary, Marc Cuban, Daymond John, Lori Greiner and Robert Herjavec that remov-

Meghan Rose Bradley Foundation Named NJWA Charity of the Year

“Feel Better Faster”

By Ileen Bradley The Meghan Rose Bradley Foundation was recently recognized by the New Jersey Wireless Association (NJWA) as one of the charities of the year, an honor that was accompanied by a $30,000 donation. To date, the foundation has directed $500,000 toward pediatric brain cancer research, as well as continued funding for a second year of research at The Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. With March upon us, Bob and I, as Meghan’s parents, would like to once again ask that Branchburg residents continue to hold Meghan in their hearts as they have since her untimely passing in 2004. Neshanic Station Named a Great Place in NJ Continued from Front Page Branchburg Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. Fittingly named from the Algonquin meaning of “double stream,” the historic village is uniquely positioned to allow for leisure and recreation opportunities along the Raritan River. The village of Neshanic Station consists of Maple Avenue, Fairview Drive, Olive Street, Pearl Street, Elm Street, Main Street, Marshall Street and Woodfern Road, bordered by open space, agricultural lands, and the Raritan River to its north, south and east. On February 8, 2016, Neshanic Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places, aptly named the Neshanic Valley Historic District. Of particular value and interest is the use of green space and recreation in Neshanic Station including a parking area and boat launch, which is now frequently used by residents and visitors.

Municipal trails along the Raritan River are hot spots for fishing and kayaking. The changes in elevation, along with the historic destinations and beautiful vistas are prime miles for hikers and bikers alike. Branchburg Township is also home to the Somerset County-owned, 27-hole Neshanic Valley Golf Courses, recently ranked one of the top 50 municipal golf courses in the United States as well as a Certified Cooperative Sanctuary from Audubon International. Many events and activities are held to celebrate the unique values of Neshanic Station including parades and historic walking tours. In April of 2020, the community also held a Poster Contest to celebrate its 175th Anniversary. Engagement of residents in civic life include but are not limited to the Branchburg Friends of Open Space and the Neshanic Station Historical Society.

Lastly but maybe most importantly, Branchburg Township has demonstrated its commitment to preserving and enhancing the character of Neshanic Station through its strategic planning and zoning. The Village Residential (VR) District has been adopted to ensure development is consistent with the character and scale of the village, while the Village Business (VB) District has been developed to provide for commercial uses which historically existed in the village while allowing opportunities for commercial uses compatible with the character of the community. Neshanic Station is an utterly unique and great neighborhood in New Jersey that provides residents and visitors with the daily access they need to survive in a setting that offers the recreation and respite they need to thrive. This village is a model for areas in a very densely populated State who want to offer their residents the physical and mental health amenities that are available through the natural resources that only Neshanic Station can offer.

Stony Brook Teacher Who Makes Magic

Emily Williams

Stony Brook Elementary School Special Education Teacher Emily Williams has been named to the radio station Magic 98.3 “Teachers Who Make Magic Class of 2021.” Fellow fourth grade teacher Randy Morin nominated Ms. Williams. Following is the tribute that aired on Magic 98.3 on Jan. 15 and played over the loudspeaker at Stony Brook: Emily Williams “possesses many qualities that make her a highly effective teacher! Her

classroom environment is welcoming, neat, organized and conducive to learning. As an extremely efficient person, Emily teaches her students routines and procedures that instill important life skills such as organization, responsibility, and independence. For several years now, Emily has been in a collaborative teaching model, working closely with a fellow special education teacher to give students extra life skills. She has tolerance, compassion and understanding of children with special needs and learning differences. Emily is a team player who goes out of her way to help other teachers and is always willing to share her ideas, knowledge, and materials. When new curriculum directives come along, she takes the initiative to develop resources for the benefit of her colleagues. For all these reasons, Emily Williams is being included in the 2021 class of “Teachers Who Makes Magic!” NOW REGISTERING FOR SEPT.2021

BWC Celebrates Women’s Clubs Valley Community College Foun-

History teaches us who we are and inspires us to be better. March is National Women’s History Month; both a reminder and an opportunity to recognize women’s considerable contributions to society. One part of this heritage has been women coming together in organized groups to affect positive change in the community and elsewhere. In April of 1890, 63 women’s clubs joined together to form the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which today is one of the world’s largest and oldest women’s volunteer organizations, with over 3,000 clubs across the United States and around the world. With dedicated altruism, women’s clubs have worked to improve the quality of life. They have advocated for better health programs and environmental conservation, helped establish the eight-hour workday, helped to end child labor, started 75% of our nation’s public libraries, and much more. The Pure Food and Drug Act was initiated by New Jersey clubwoman Alice Leakey of Cranford. It was passed in 1906 with the help of the GFWC and its massive letterwriting campaign, and eventually led to the creation of Food and Drug Ad-

ministration. With many such accomplishments to its credit, the GFWC has been active in improving education, health, and safety for us all. Established in 1894, the NJ State Federation of Women’s Clubs, a member of the GFWC, has over 6,300 members. In 1918, the NJSFWC founded the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass Residential College of Rutgers University) and has continued to support it. Among its many accomplishments are successes in environmental conservation, domestic violence prevention, and promoting education and better health. With its guidance, NJSFWC clubs continue to make a difference in the lives of others, one project at a time. One of these proud NJSFWC/ GFWC clubs is the Branchburg Woman’s Club, a nonpolitical, charitable, nonprofit group founded in 1960. The BWC supports student scholarships plus many nonprofit organizations, charities, and community projects. Some of the groups helped: The Food Bank Network of Somerset County, Raritan Headwaters Association, St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, The Raptor Trust, Safe+Sound Somerset (domestic violence survivors), Prevent Child Abuse -New Jersey, CASA-NJ (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children), St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Autism Awareness-NJ, Visions and Pathways, Interfaith Hospitality Network of Somerset County, Raritan

dation, National Alliance on Mental Illness -New Jersey, The Cancer Support Community, Holiday Happiness (local social work), Rolling Thunder Charities, Inc. (helps veterans, active duty military and their families), Branchburg Rescue Squad, 4 local volunteer fire companies, Branchburg Historical Society, Operation Chillout, and the Warm Up America! Foundation. Due to the pandemic, the BWC’s larger meetings and most extracurricular club events continue to be cancelled. Members are looking forward to the return of club activities when things improve. For the latest news, follow the club on Facebook or call (908) 866-1060.

March Shepherds in Promise of Spring

A male ring neck duck makes a rest stop on a local pond during its migratory flight to summer breeding grounds. Be assured the duck has no idea it is the month of March. Its survival depends on the predictability of increasing daylength as a constant upon which to base evolutionary adaptation.

are the ingredients each iteration of March combines in varying amounts and serves cold. The third month is thus difficult to characterize, however, it is a month which hosts a cosmic time piece to mark the end of winter and the beginning of spring, down to the millisecond. When winter turned on its light, to give hope on the darkest day, daylength began to steadily increase. Two months later, at the

their identities irrelevant. A less colorful migratory bird is the woodcock, an odd collection of parts that specialize in probing the soil for earthworms. Mating flights of the males in the fading light of day are a spectacle of sight and sound to behold in this month. Now is the time to scan the rivers, ponds and flooded fields for waterfowl not usually seen locally except during spring migration. Blue and green winged teal, ring neck ducks, widgeon, brandt, grebes and coot have been known to briefly grace us with their presence. Though the arrival of March each year and the gift of light it brings, is a foregone conclusion, the content of its character is always a question. What is not in question is the measurable instant daylength outpaces the night. This cosmic event serves to provide the predictability which allows all life to adapt and evolve and thereby exist. The Branchburg News • March 2021

The messenger of spring magically appears out of the gray face of a late winter blizzard, wearing ragged white robes, shedding skiffs of pure white snow and shards of blue tinted ice. The visage of spring’s early march forward from the bowels of deep winter, presents a menacing image whose heart will soon melt to reveal the bright colors of spring. March is a character of ill repute whose final dying act redeems its ice-cold legacy of unpredictable weather. A child of contradictory parentage, whose annual re-birth brings forth a new genetic balance favoring one or the other parent is the rule. Each March conducts its business of shepherding in the promise of spring from winter pastures in its own unique style. Warm sunny days with blue sky, endless gray days threatening snow squalls and subfreezing temperatures

time of the vernal equinox, daylength and night reach perfect balance, but just for an instant. The ever-increasing time between sunrise and sunset is a welcome gift that is rewrapped, regifted and accepted with enthusiasm and anticipation. Once the white wrapping is removed and the gift box opened, the colors of early spring emerge. At a distance, the wash of maroon, orange and red appear as broadbrush strokes across the dull gray and light brown canvas of wooded hillsides. A closer look reveals the bright colors to be pixelated, each dot an individual tree bud. In the absence of foliage, colorful migratory warblers fluoresce against the bare branches and leafless thickets along the river corridors. Their movements like intermittent flashes of a strobe light, reveal their presence. Gold and ruby crowned kinglets, yellow throat, parula and magnolia warblers are a sampling of transient feathered jewels strung across the treetops at peak migration. Redstart, indigo bunting and scarlet tanagers are a portion of the natural treasure of exquisite rare feathered gems whose beauty makes

CORN

Why don’t the Irish shuck corn before they cook it? Because the husks are such a lovely shade of green... Why do leprechauns hate running? They’d rather jig than jog. What happens if a leprechaun falls into the ocean? He gets wet, of course. When does a leprechaun cross the road? When the light turns green!
