The holidays are quickly approaching, and the past two years have been difficult for many. Let’s all ensure our local families in need have something to open during the holiday season. As a local mom with two children in the Readington Township Public School District, I wanted to develop a project that reached community members in need. The Family Gift Assistance Project was created and last year, more than 55 children and more than 23 families were able to benefit from the generosity of others through this charitable project. Children received multiple gifts, as well as items for their families to enjoy. Much of this success was due to the help of the Readington School District reaching out to student families in need, as well as helping with the distribution of gifts. Due to the overwhelming support and appreciation from our community, the Family Gift Assistance Project will be running again for the 2021 holiday season. I am excited to partner again with

the Readington Township Public School District to make this another successful year. If you or someone you know, who resides in Readington Township, is in need this year, fill out a form at: https://forms.gle/MFRmztkhBbJs4zt86 or email lindsaysalaj18@gmail.com for a direct link. If you are a family with a student in the district, you may contact Katie DeRiso, Assistant to the Business Administrator for the school district, at kderiso@readington.k12.nj.us or call 908-5342895. Ms. DeRiso can pass along gift requests anonymously so your family does not have to be identified. All information will be kept strictly confidential. Recipients must be Readington Township residents. Requests for assistance are due by Friday, Nov. 19. If you would like to help a child or family in need by donating, complete a form at https://forms. gle/rqyed7M912CMgyZD7 or email lindsaysalaj18@gmail.com for a direct link. Student Learning Standards Revisions Planned for 2022 By Dr. Stacey Brown, Humanities Supervisor and Ms. Sarah Pauch, Supervisor of Math, Science & Technology The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) supports schools, educators and districts to ensure all of New Jersey’s 1.4 million students have equitable access to high-quality education and achieve academic excellence. The state sets the academic standards, while local school districts implement the curricula that help students meet the standards. The NJDOE performs a review of the standards every five years. The revised standards truly represent a foundation from which districts will build a coherent curriculum that prepares each New Jersey student with the knowledge and skills to succeed in a rapidly changing world. In March of 2021, NJ was named the top state for public education by U.S. News & World Report. Highlights of the current revisions include: • Climate Change across all content areas, leveraging the passion students have shown for this critical issue and providing them opportunities to develop a deep understanding of the science be-

hind the changes and to explore the solutions; • Computer programming in all grade bands K-12, ensuring all students receive a 22nd century education in the critical computational thinking skills that are the underpinning of so much of our work and so many of our transactions; and • National standards for science and visual and performing arts, ensuring access to, and opportunity in, science and the arts, for every NJ public student. During the revision process, the NJDOE sought feedback from a variety of sources. The individuals and groups included in the process as part of standards review teams included 130 educators from public (including charters) and non-public elementary, middle, and high schools, higher education, parents, and representatives from non-profit organizations, business, the military, and health fields. Members of the public also provided feedback during the public review period. These standards will take effect in September of 2022. The full standards and more detail regarding the above information are available at nj.gov/education/ cccs/2020.

Readington Community Theatre Comes Back with Stickney Tribute

On the weekend of Sept. 24-26, something wonderful happened in Readington. Our community theatre converted the Wade-Wyckoff barn on the township museum’s Bouman-Stickney property into a small auditorium where four performances of a scene from Howard Lindsay’s play “Life With Father” were presented. Pictured at curtain call, from left, are: Matt Patalona as Dr. Humphreys, Chuck Paolino as Rev. Dr. Lloyd, Terrie Copeland as Nora the Maid, Michael Kearins as Whitney Day, Max Keller as John Day, Christopher Mazur as Father, Christy Keller as Mother, Sam Clemens as Clarence Day, Daine Vinciguerra as Harlan Day, Kathy Troy as Margaret the Cook, and Jenna Pontecorvo as Dr. Somers. Patalona, Paolino, and Vinciguerra are Readington residents. These performances served as a fitting tribute to the famous Broadway couple, Howard Lindsay and Dorothy Stickney, who once lived on the property. The play ran on Broadway from 1939 to 1947 with Lindsay and Stickney in the lead roles of Father and Mother. The Director of this production was Tori Clemens. - Submitted by Rob Nonni for Readington Community Theatre

Slow Down for Readington’s Riders and Horses By Anne Owen, Readington Trail Association, Readington Township Open Space Advisory Board About 15 years ago, signs appeared in Readington Township that displayed “25mph When Horse Rider is Present.” It’s worth spending a few minutes revisiting why these signs are so important. A friend of mine was riding along the side of a township road when a car approached at a high speed. She signaled the driver to slow down, which they did. Upon passing, they accelerated rapidly and loudly, causing her horse to bolt, throw his rider and attempt to climb up a high ridge by the road, causing him to fall backward. The driver did stop and luckily, there were no serious injuries to either rider or horse – but that is not always the case. Why is this so important? Horses are flight animals. When they feel threatened, instinct takes over and their response is to run from the danger. Even the best trained horse will bolt, spin or spook when frightened. The State of New Jersey recognized the issue as early as 2004, subsequently updating the statute

Speed Limit 25 signs are posted in areas with high horse riding traffic.

in 2019: “When approaching or passing a person riding or driving a horse, a person driving a motor vehicle shall reduce the vehicle’s speed to a rate not exceeding 25 miles an hour and proceed with caution. At the request of or upon a

signal by putting up the hand or otherwise, from a person riding or driving a horse in the opposite direction, the motor vehicle driver shall cause the motor vehicle to stop and remain stationary so long as may be necessary to allow the horse to pass.” A person who violates subsection a. of this section shall be subject to a fine of $150. The Readington Trail Association volunteers were instrumental in working with the state, Hunterdon County and Readington Township to have these signs installed and maintained. As drivers adhere to this Statute, the roads will be safer for all of us - Equestrians, Horses and Motorists. Working together, we will all be able to enjoy the beautiful countryside, the Open Space and the Trails in Readington Township. POLICE CHIEF JOSEPH GRECO TO RETIRE JANUARY 1, 2022 Chief Greco grew up in Readington and joined the police force in 1999 after serving in the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Corporal. He was also associated with the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office prior to joining Readington Police. The Township has begun the rigorous process of filling his position. Any officer who has been with the department for at least five years, attained the rank of Sergeant or above, and has held that rank for three or more years is eligible to apply for the position. New Jersey law requires that the Chief’s position be filled from within the department. All eligible and interested officers have been encouraged to apply. The screening process will include an interview with a panel of retired chiefs from the New Jersey Association of Chiefs of Police, a required five and ten year proposed plan for the department and presentation of the same, a psychological evaluation and an interview with the Township Administrator and the entire Township Committee. We have several qualified candidates, and we are sure there will be a smooth transition. We wish Chief Greco a long and healthy retirement and thank him for his service and dedication to Readington Township. He will be missed.

Volunteer Guardianship One-on-One Celebrates 25 Years For 25 years, Volunteer Guardianship has been training volunteers from the community to serve as legal guardians for incapacitated adults who lack the ability to make decisions for themselves and have no one to serve in this role. This is the only non-profit organization in New Jersey to provide this service.

The organization recruits, trains, and provides ongoing support to volunteers willing to serve as legal guardians. You can help by volunteering to become someone’s guardian, refer someone who may be in need of services, make a monetary donation so those who depend on volunteer guardians are

These jokes are real turkeys. . . Why did the farmer have to separate the chicken and the turkey? He sensed fowl play. What did the turkey say to the turkey hunter? “Quack! Quack!” What’s the difference between a pirate and a cranberry farmer? A pirate buries his treasure, but a cranberry farmer treasures his berries. What do hippies put on their Thanksgiving potatoes? Groovy!
