Hurricane Ida Ravages Readington Township Hurricane Ida blasted the area with torrential rain and wind, causing flooding and downed wires and trees through the night on Sept. 1. Many motorists were caught off guard by the intense rainfall and were stranded in their vehicles. The state reported 27 drowning deaths due to persons trapped in cars or swept away trying to escape their vehicles. The flooding also triggered gasfed explosions that incinerated homes. Flood watches and tornado warnings were broadcast all evening on television, radio and cell phones as basements were filling with flood water and the situation on roadways became treacherous. Hunterdon County was among the hardest hit in New Jersey, with rainfall amounts exceeding 11 inches. Most of the rain

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on Aug. 24 signed a law requiring public and non-public middle schools and high schools, as well as higher education institutions, to adopt antihazing policies and penalties for violations of the policies. The legislation is named after Tim Piazza, a 19-year-old Readington resident and Pennsylvania State University student who died after falling down a flight of stairs as a result of hazing in February 2017. Parents Jim and Evelyn Piazza said, “We are grateful to Senator Kip Bateman for introducing this legislation and Governor Murphy and the other senators and assemblymen and women for supporting the NJ anti-hazing law bearing Tim’s name. This law will be the stiffest in the country and will hopefully deter this bad behavior and hold those accountable who choose to put someone’s well-being and/or life at risk as part of an initiation ritual.”

Well owners bear the responsibility for water quality monitoring and ensuring the safety of their drinking water. Contaminants are often odorless, colorless, and tasteless so the only way to know for sure that your water is safe, is to evaluate it. Recent flooding may have caused contamination of drinking water. Contaminants like coliform bacteria and nitrates flow with surface runoff into wellheads and groundwater sup-

Bateman said that shortly after Tim’s death, he received a letter from Matthew Prager, a then 12-year-old student who was Timothy’s friend and neighbor, “asking that I introduce antihazing legislation in Timothy’s name. To this day, I am grateful to Matthew for sending me that letter. No student deserves to go through the ritual humiliation that 19-year-old Timothy Piazza experienced on the night that he lost his life. With the signing of this bill, hazing will no longer be tolerated in New Jersey.”

Capital Projects Completed Over Summer The Readington Township School District is thrilled to share several facility projects that have been recently completed or near completion in the school buildings. The facility upgrades have been accomplished through the use of existing capital reserves with no impact to the local tax levy nor a need for a referendum. Budget efficiencies and fiscal discipline over the years has allowed for the district to maintain a capital reserve. At Holland Brook School, the district replaced roofing in its gymnasium, cafeteria, 4th grade wing, main office and hallways with a multi-layered system. This necessary improvement will reduce leaks and provide better drainage, preventing poor indoor air quality or potentially hazardous conditions. With a 20-year warranty, the new roofing system

should significantly reduce operating repair costs that have escalated in recent years due to the age of the roof that was original to the building. Lastly, at the intermediate school, the district removed carpet in numerous rooms to aid in air quality as well as various painting projects. At Readington Middle School, the district has replaced the gymnasium bleachers with a safer, electric opening model that is handicap accessible. The hallway lockers and trim were painted as well. Colors were chosen to match existing school insignia. For information technology, servers that remain onsite have been replaced and a backup firewall device was repurposed. The reutilization of existing equipment for alternative purposes saved the district money, and the auction of aged servers shall afford some

The Readington H.S.A. is a non-profit organization developed to foster effective communication between the parents and staff of the Readington Township Public Schools and to enhance the social, emotional, and educational benefits children receive in the school district. H.S.A. stands for Home School Associacontinued on page 4 tion meaning that the mission of the organization is to bring the home and the school together to cooperate in supporting educational opportunities for children in Readington Township Public Schools. The H.S.A. is like a P.T.A. but it is a completely independent organization benefiting the local schools without belonging to a nation-wide organization. This allows all funds raised to go directly to support Readington Schools. In September and October each

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, our volunteers have figured out ways to give back to Readington Schools. Last school year, we shifted our events from in person to remote or delivery events with great success. We also donated canopies to the schools to allow greater opportunities for the teachers to have the children outside. This year the H.S.A. is planning for an expansion of in person events during the fall and spring as health conditions allow, beginning with Block Parties and Book Fairs in September. In October, the H.S.A. will host Halloween events. In the spring, it will have Field Days and End of Year activities for the students. For more information about the Readington H.S.A. including volunteer opportunities, please visit our tab on the Readington Township Public School District’s website at www.readington.k12. nj.us or email readingtonschoolshsa@gmail.com. Donations are accepted at any time either at www.readingtonhsa.ptboard. com/home or by mail at P.O. Box 700, Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889.

Senator’s Trophy for Leadership A Readington Township teen was named recipient of the 2021 Senator’s Trophy for Leadership Excellence at the Hunterdon County 4-H and Agricultural Fair. Ryan Mallea, a Hunterdon Central High graduate currently a sophomore at Bucknell University with a concentration of civil engineering, is the winner. Because he’d already returned to school, his brother, Maguire Mallea, accepted the award from state Sen. Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-16th district) at the

recent fair. Pictured with Mallea are Commissioner John E. Lanza; Brad Myhre, clerk of the Board of Commissioners/Chief of Staff; and Sen. Bateman. State Sen. William Schluter started the award in 1972 to honor a 4-H teen who exemplifies strong leadership qualities. Ryan has been a member of the Hunterdon Hoppers for the past nine years; and joined Hunterdon County 4-H Junior Leaders five years ago. He is active in public

additional savings in the near future. Around the district, various repairs have occurred relating to windows, concrete, walkways and painting. Moreover, an enhancement to outdoor classrooms and spaces started to occur with 60 new picnic tables being purchased and strategically placed throughout the buildings. These projects have been done with safety and wellness in mind as staff and students return to full-day in-person instruction for the 2021-22 school year. From an equipment perspective, the district recently purchased five school buses. The vehicles provide both air conditioning and heat, and the utmost safety for transporting students to and from school. Keeping with the district’s sustainability commitment, the new vehicles are replacing older models with poor emis-

sions thereby reducing the district’s carbon footprint. The district further procured 475 laptops for students, fortifying the intent for each and every student to have access to the district’s online learning platforms. This tremendously worthwhile investment enables staff to interact with students both in and outside the classroom to maximize instruction and student achievement. The district would be remiss if it did not acknowledge all the hard work of the staff in the Facilities and Information Technology Departments since the start of the pandemic. Their diligence not only allowed for the execution of the above-mentioned projects, but also the outfitting of district-wide safety precautions to protect staff and students from COVID-19 to successfully allow for in-person instruction.

Emerald Ash Borer Destruction Readington’s beautiful ash trees are being decimated by the highly-destructive Emerald Ash Borer insects. Many of these trees are along Township roads and can become hazardous to automobiles, bicyclists and pedestrians as well as to power lines. Recently, a meeting was held to discuss how to deal with these dead or dying trees along Township and County roads. Attending this meeting were Mayor John Albanese, Committeeperson Betty Ann Fort, Township Administrator Richard Sheola, Township Engineer Rob O’Brien and Environmental Commission Chairperson Neil Hendrickson, Ph.D, who is also a certified arborist. Officials from the County and from JCP&L were also invited, but were unable to attend. A future meeting will be scheduled with them. A plan was put in place to perform an inventory of the dead and dying trees with the help of our Department of Public Works. We will then prioritize which trees need to be removed first. In the near future, a form will be added to the Township website which will enable residents to report areas or specific trees which they are concerned about along our roads as well. Trees on private property are the responsibility of individual property owners. Unfortunately, this is an expensive but necessary project, and one which is expected to go on for several years.

For questions regarding testing sites, dates, times, or procedures, contact Shannon Long at 908-534-4051 ext. 234 or by email to boh@readingtontwp-nj.org .

JCP&L Announces Power Reliability Project Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is planning upgrades to its existing transmission lines to enhance electric service reliability. The Project includes extending the existing 34.5 kilovolt (“kV”) circuit approximately 8 miles to network this line with the East Flemington Substation which will benefit approximately 8,100 customers in the area. Presently, the circuit is in a radial configuration which means power supply is only available at one end of the circuit. In the proposed networked configuration, power supply would be available at each end of the circuit, providing greater reliability and operational flexibility. In addition, upgrades will be performed within the East Flemington Substation which will provide further reliability, redundancy, and operational flexibility on the surrounding 34.5 kV electric system which serves customers in Branchburg, Readington, and Raritan Townships. The project will utilize an existing distribution corridor along the south/eastern side of Route 202 and existing JCP&L easements along Colony Road. Existing wood poles will be replaced with new slightly taller wood poles to accommodate the line extension. In some cases, additional structure types may be needed due to engineering constraints, terrain or access considerations. JCP&L will review and address vegetation management along the corridor and work with individual customers where needed. JCP&L is upgrading and strengthening the area to provide enhanced reliability and meet the existing and future needs of their customers and communities. Projects are focused on upgrading or replacing aging equipment to harden infrastructure, reduce outages, and cut maintenance costs, thereby enhancing performance and safety by building a smarter, more secure system, and adding flexibility by building redundancy and allowing system operators to react more swiftly to changing grid conditions. What does this mean for residents? JCP&L will be reaching out to residents along the project corridor prior to any work beginning 4th quarter of 2021 to discuss the project, secure survey permission where necessary, and discuss vegetation management needs. Construction activities are expected to begin January 2023, with the project being completed by the end of 2023.

By Erin Rocchietti The Readington Tewksbury Junior Baseball League (RTJBL) travel teams wrapped up their summer season in mid-August. The travel program comprises teams ranging from 8-13 U. Players try out for their age groups in the fall, train through the winter and culminate their season in the summer. The Raptors (8U) had a fantastic first season in travel baseball. In this developmental year, the players had lots of fun and learned excellent baseball fundamentals. They grew tremendously in skill and knowledge and demonstrate strong potential for future success. As highlights on the field, the Raptors placed second in the USABL Memorial Day Classic and enjoyed participating in USABL’s Summer League. It was also a building year for the Rangers (9U) who developed skills and grew as a team. They responded to the challenges of the Spring Season by winning two playoff games on the road and advancing to the championship game. The Rangers solidly won both qualifying games for their Memorial Day Tournament but fell a couple runs short in the championship game later that evening. The team showed a

9U Rangers

spectacular defensive effort in the postseason by holding the 1-seed and eventual champion to only 4 runs at their home field. The Railriders (10U) team had a tremendous season, compiling a record of 18-9-1. Playing in and out of tournaments and leagues, early in the season, the team put in a solid effort and fell short of two division championships by only 1 run in each of the championship games. Undeterred, this team never gave up and finished the season on a high note by winning the 4th of July USABL Classic tournament and taking home

the division championship for the New Providence Gold League. The Revolution (11U) took some lumps early, while playing against the highest level of competition NJ had to offer. It paid off in the end, as they were able to secure the #2 seed in their summer league playoffs. The team won the semi-finals in walk-off fashion to earn the right to host the Championship Game at Readington’s own Rail Road Field. Unfortunately, the boys came up a little short in this title game, but played their hearts out and never gave up.

The Roadrunners (12U) showed off their hard work having played together from their 8U-12U days with a championship in the North Hunterdon spring league, a USABL Going Yard championship and a runner-up spot in the Montgomery baseball Covino invitational. They finished up their year with an amazing week-long trip to Aberdeen, Maryland, to play at the Ripken Experience on MLB replica fields with teams from all over the country and appearances by Bill and Cal Ripken, Jr. This unforgettable baseball experience was touted by the Roadrunner players as “the best week of their life.” For information on how to participate with or be a sponsor for the Readington Tewksbury Junior Baseball League, go to www. rtjbl.com. RTJBL is a non-profit organization that offers recreation and travel baseball for kids ages 5-18.

Eagle Scout Enhances Food Pantry Garden

James J. Benson III (Jimmy) of Readington Township achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at his Board of Review on May 6. Jimmy is the son of James J. Jr. and Nancy Benson and the brother of Lindsay and Kyle, also a Boy Scout. He is also the grandson of James J. Benson of Melville, NY, and Thomas Caracciolo of Yonkers, NY. Jimmy is a member of Boy Scout Troop 186 chartered to the Three Bridges Reformed Church. The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest achievement a scout can earn. A scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, fulfill leadership roles and display outdoor skills, demonstrate by example the Scout Oath and Law, and complete a comprehensive service project in the community. “I have always had a passion for helping others, especially those that do not have enough to eat,” said Jimmy, who has been volunteering with Meals on Wheels in Hunterdon County since the age of 5. At this young age, he began helping his mother deliver meals and now delivers on his own each week. In keeping with this passion, Jimmy chose the Flemington Food Pantry as the

recipient of his Eagle project. Jimmy designed and built four cold frame garden boxes for the Food Pantry vegetable garden. Beyond scouting, Jimmy’s interests include playing and talking about baseball and most other sports, spending time watching baseball while working for Readington Tewksbury Junior Baseball League as a maintenance worker and delivering food for DoorDash. Jimmy graduated from Hunterdon Central Regional High School in June 2021 and is now attending Fordham University. Three Bridges Boy Scout Troop 186 meets at the Three Bridges Reformed Church on Tuesdays during the school year from 7 to 8:30 p.m. For info, email information@readington186.mytroop.us.

If a rooster lays an egg at the very peak of a barn roof, which side of the roof will the egg roll down? Neither. Roosters don’t lay eggs! What did the termite ask when he sat down at the Princeton Bar & Grill? “Is the bar tender here?” A guy went to his doctor and asked what he could do about his flat feet. Doctor told him to try a gas station for a patch and an inflation. Why do communists write using only lower-case letters? Because they hate CAPITALISM! If children refuse to take a nap, maybe they should go to jail for resisting a rest...
