Readington Township Water, Lead Testing Dates Set

Our local supply of clean water has been seriously challenged recently. The combina tion of occasional heavy rainstorms and intensifying drought conditions over the summer led to flooding and wells needing to reach deeper into their aquifers to deliver water to res idents and businesses. Both of those conditions can lead to contamina tion of our drinking water supplies.

The 39th annual New Jersey Lottery Festival of Ballooning was held July 29, 30 and 31 at Solberg Airport. New specialty balloons joining the pack included a unicorn, tiger and a flying saucer. The hot air balloon ascensions took place in the early morning and early evening, filling the sky over Readington Township and surrounding areas with brilliant color. Live music and fireworks added to the festivities.

Readington Schools Set to Inspire and Inquire This Year

Bacteria and nitrate contami nants can flow from the surface into groundwater supplies from storm water runoff, farm fields, failed septic systems, and other sources. The drought has stressed our wells and the sources of the public water we depend upon. It is important to take a few basic steps once a year to make sure your water supply is safe.

The Readington Township School District is excited to wel come all students back for the 2022-2023 school year on Sept. 6. As we launch the new school year, I am reminded of one of my favorite educational philosophers, John Dewey. He said, “The goal of education is to enable individuals to continue their education.” This is our mission - to educate students leaving them wanting even more education. We want students go ing home each day with a desire to come back to school the next day to learn more, explore more, and achieve more. The district looks forward to this continued work as the year gets underway. The district welcomes several new teaching and support staff members in various positions. As of the writing of this article we will welcome the following staff members: At Whitehouse School the district welcomes Kevin Grant, Krystiana Sellers, Julia Ricardo, Kelly Peterson, Leslie Martinez, Errol Rojas, and Christopher Bo lotov. The Three Bridges School welcomes Jolene Mizsak, Craig Tipton, Julia Fillebrown, Michelle Parkhurst, Andreia Perez, and Kris ten Doyle. We also welcome David Ward, Alyssa DeBiasio, Samantha Lestrange, and Maria Post to Hol land Brook School. Readington Middle School welcomes Jaclyn Kephart, Emily Obenauer, Caro line Ratanski, Evan Gulino, Olivia Deeming, Stephanie Goldrosen, Philip McGinty, Vincent Bianca mano, Jemma Buccine, Christine Parolise, Joshua Idio, Susan Zim merman, Stevie Ader, Kelsey She bey, and Angela Hendricks. There are a number of new paraprofes sionals in the district including Richard Hopkins, Gianna DeSapio, Jennifer Rourke, Lexie Smith, Jen nifer Peist, Carli Stokes, and Nicole Smith. New bus drivers include Virginia Petzinger and John Rynie wicz. We welcome these individu als to our Readington family and wish them well in their careers! Over the summer, we worked hard to revise curriculum, pur chase new texts and technologies, and update our facilities. Many of our teachers attended the district’s Summer Teacher Academy Pro gram learning about topics such as technology, literacy and math instruction, using virtual field trips, social emotional learning (SEL), and supporting inquiry based learning. We focused much of our summer learning on using data to drive instruction. Our leadership team spent time considering and researching the best ways in which we can execute our strategic goals in order to live up to our mission of empowering members of our com munity to live purposeful lives with integrity, to cultivate a spirit of dis covery, and to embrace connections in our diverse, global society. We look forward to launching the next phases of our strategic goals where we hope to inspire student and teacher inquiry, promote meaning ful partnerships, and build a sense of social awareness. We anticipate a great school year where children can learn, play and explore. As a district we work together to inquire and inspire learning throughout our community.

The Knights of Columbus Council 6930 White house Station, Our Lady of Lourdes, held a Ukraine Relief Drive in June. The Knights gathered a truckload of goods as well as $4,000 in cash. It was a joint Knights council drive and the items and cash were turned over to Council 2531 in Vineland which had pre-arranged shipping containers to go to help Ukrainian refugees. The cash will be used to buy additional supplies to offset some shipping costs. Early in 2019, the Township Committee voted unanimously to deny a proposed cemetery, that if approved, would have encompassed about 40 acres in the northern part of the Township, to be operated by Rosehill and Rosedale Cemetery Association. Many residents spoke in opposition to the proposal. The State statute regarding the establishment of a new cemetery requires that the developer seek a waiver from the governing body to move forward with their proposal. After making their presentation over several Township Committee meetings, they did not receive their approval.

After an exhaustive search, the Township Committee appointed James Curry, Jr. as Public Safety Director at a special meeting on August 15th. Since November 2021, the Township Police Department has been without a Chief after Joe Greco’s retirement. After considering all alternatives for departmental leadership, the Township Committee approved an Ordinance on June 20th creating the position of Public Safety Director giving it management and supervisory oversight of the department. There are certain areas where only a sworn officer can direct a uniform officer and thus, those are outside the domain of the Director.

The County also reduced the speed zone just prior to Route 629 from 50 MPH to 45 MPH. This was initiated by the Hunterdon County Commissioners. All of the previous existing 50 MPH signs have been replaced. Weekly statistics obtained from the County Route 523 south speed display sign taken before and after the speed reduction indicate the average speed of vehicles has dropped from 43 MPH to 42 MPH, showing the signage does have an impact on motorists’ speeds. The Readington Township OEM display sign has been deployed in the area of Emery Drive informing the public of the speed reduction. The new speed limits will be enforced by the Readington Township Police Department.

As a result of the Environmental Commission and Readington Water Watch Advisory Board water testing of the Rockaway Creek, very high levels of e coli have been detected in the area of Mountain Road and Lake Cushetunk. The affected areas have been posted with warning signs notifying the water is not safe for fishing, swimming, or wading. Continued monitoring and testing is being performed by several agencies including Hunterdon County Health Department and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Residents and guests are advised to stay out of the water until the signs have been removed and the area is cleared for use.

Mr. Curry retired from the Montgomery Township (NJ) Police Department in 2015 after a 27 year career. Jim attained the rank of Captain, having advanced from Patrol Officer, Sergeant and Lieutenant. He was Division Head of Hunterdon County Emergency Communications from 2016 to 2022. Jim has had exposure to every aspect of law enforcement in a similar size department and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. In addition, Jim holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Fairleigh Dickinson University and has completed the New Jersey Certified Public Manager Program. In his spare time, Jim is a bagpiper with The Somerset County Police Pipes & Drums.

In late July, the Township received good news that the plaintiff had abandoned its litigation against the Township. The owners of the property would not renew its Contract for Sale of the property with Rosehill and Rosedale. The decision for dismissal is with prejudice, meaning that plaintiff cannot pursue any damages claims. The matter is now effectively over. Speed Reductions on Route 523 Effective July 27, 2022, the County reduced the speed limit on Route 523 south of Route 620 (Dreahook and East Dreahook Road) to 35 MPH.

Immediately thereafter, Rosehill and Rosedale filed suit in federal court arguing that the State statute requirements for receiving a waiver were vague and named Readington Township as part of the suit. The New Jersey Attorney General’s office joined in the suit to defend the statute. The federal court judge sided with the plaintiff’s argument and struck down the statute, stating that it was unconstitutional. The Township appealed at the US Court of Appeals, 3rd Circuit. The Appeals Court overturned the initial decision and reinstated the State statute.

11U RailRiders had a very suc cessful travel baseball season. Play ing in very competitive divisions this group of 10 young men won 19 of their 32 games, outscoring their opponents over the year a combined 275 to 194. Some season highlights were going 2-1 in their district tournament and advancing to the semifinals. This group is looking forward to the path to Cooperstown for the 12U season next year.

12U Revolution played a tour nament-based schedule, compet ing in a total of five tournaments. Additionally, the team participated in a spring league and rounded out the season with a tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park. These tournaments led to two semi-final finishes, a second-place finish in the spring league, and several noteworthy moments including a walk-off home run against Clark, a perfect game, and other clutch per formances. The Revolution season concluded in Cooperstown where the boys fought hard against teams from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Min nesota, Massachusetts, and Cali fornia. This experience was eyeopening and exciting, and the level of competition gave the players a chance to show how much they had grown throughout the year.

The Ramblers played the Fords Falcons for the 9U Championship. The Ramblers lineup came out the first inning strong and racked up a quick five runs. Harlan Slawecki was the starting pitcher and pitched a solid three innings against a very good Fords team. Connor Edwards came in as a middle reliever and kept the game close. Catcher Bran don Schubert had a great game be hind the plate throwing two base runners out at both third and second during the game. Ryan Beardsley then came in to close the game on the mound and earn his first save of the season with the Ramblers win ning 8-6. 8U Raptors had an incredible travel season. The Raptors partici pated in the USABL Spring League and went 10-1 giving up only 27 runs and scoring 118 runs in 11 games. They went into the play-offs as the number 1 seed and gaining the home team advantage. The team took home the win and the USABL Spring League Championship with a 7-2 score over Long Valley. Leav ing no time to spare, they upped their level of play and jumped right into the district tournament as the first 8U team in many years from Readington to attend. They were neck in neck with all the teams in their division and played hard to secure a spot in the district semifinals but fell short to NHYBL 2119 in a nail biter game. The boys continued to remain a force to be reckoned with throughout the sum mer league. The Raptors moved up to the next level of play for the US ABL Summer League and despite having some tougher competition went 6-4-1 scoring 100 runs and giving up 90 over 11 games. They demonstrated drive, perseverance and teamwork as they found their way through play-offs and back to another championship game. While the championship game didn’t end in another win, the season most cer tainly did. These hard-working kids celebrated a spring league champi onship, a run to semi-finals in the district tournament and a secondplace finish in their summer league. They went 17-8-1. For more information on how to participate with or be a sponsor for the Readington Tewksbury Junior Baseball League, go to www.rtjbl. com. RTJBL is a non-profit orga nization that offers recreation and travel baseball for kids ages 5-18.

The Ramblers lineup was able to connect all afternoon to pile up 11 total runs against a strong West Or ange pitcher. Joey Prisco returned to the mound and earned his second save of the tournament with an 11-3 Ramblers victory sending the Ram blers to the championship game.

10U Rangers had a successful spring and summer travel season, playing in the Spring USABL and Summer Green League seasons with a record of 17-7-1. In the summer league, the team earned a bid in the winner’s bracket, host ing in Readington and advanced to the semi-finals. The Rangers also played in two tournaments, Memo rial Day and NJ Mayhem, which brought challenging opponents and the opportunity to grow as stronger competitors and earn a win over a private club team. The Rangers players grew as a team throughout the season and look forward to fur ther growth in the off season and next year.

The Readington Tewksbury Junior Baseball League (RTJBL) players progressed from weekly workouts indoors to windy and chilly outdoor practices in early spring, ultimate ly playing night after night and in weekend-long tournaments in the blistering heat of July. Through this long season the teams became the definition of stamina and dedica tion.Below are season summaries as provided by the dedicated coaching staff.

9U Ramblers had a standout performance in the Memorial Day Tournament. In game one, the Ramblers played the Bridgewater Panthers Red team. Henry Win ter was the starting and winning pitcher. In the bottom of the 5th in ning and losing 7-3 the Bridgewa ter team was looking for a last licks comeback and had the bases loaded with two outs. Joey Prisco was on the mound looking to earn his first save when the ball was hit to deep left field. Brendan Simpson made a game saving catch in deep left field to give the Ramblers their first vic tory of the weekend. In game two the Ramblers played the West Or ange PAL White team. Brendan Simpson was the starting pitcher and pitched a solid three innings.
