Rise in Vehicle Thefts Hunterdon County Sheriff Fred W. Brown and Prosecutor Renee Robeson are working to inform the community about a rise in vehicle thefts and thefts from motor vehicles, in an effort to protect families, home, and property. Here is information about the vehicle theft trend and tips to avoid a theft: • In 2021 there was a 22 percent increase in car thefts and the numbers have continued to rise this year • Car theft is up 31 percent so far in 2022 • Don’t leave your car running • Lock your car • Take your keys or key fob with you even if you are parked in a garage • Don’t leave valuables in your car • If possible, park in a garage or a well-lit place • Thieves troll the area looking for cars with mirrors turned out which often indicates that the car is unlocked, and the key may be in the vehicle • Stolen cars are often used in other crimes • Finally, if your car is stolen, report the theft to the police immediately.

Beginning with board terms Jan. 1 of next year, the district will have two board members from Readington Township and four seats from Raritan Township instead of three from each of those municipalities. Board of Health, Open Space Advisory Board, Historic Preservation Commission, Community Garden, Friends of the Dog Park, Whitehouse Rescue Squad, and Three Bridges Library. At press time, 389 pounds have been collected for CERT towards the Trex Challenge. All of this adds up to over 6000 pounds of plastic film diverted from the landfill since February 2020. Donations of plastic film can be dropped off in front of the Whitehouse Station Library in two white bins labeled Trex Challenge. Plastic film includes grocery bags, bread bags, ice bags, bubble wrap, dry cleaning bags, plastic shipping envelopes, ziplock and other reclosable food storage bags, cereal bags, case overwrap, salt bags, pallet wrap and stretch film, wood pellet bags, and produce bags. If it’s not on the list, it’s not accepted. All donated plastic film should be clean and free of food. Address labels on the plastic shipping envelopes should be cut out. Here’s a tip: Keep cutting with scissors when you open a package and cut out mailing labels, then toss into your donation collection. Any paper or leftover food on plastic film contaminates the recycling stream. A warm thank you to Whitehouse Station Library on Main Street for willingly hosting two Trex donation bins since July 2020. These actions contribute towards Readington’s Sustainable Jersey Silver status. Interested in helping or participating as a community group? Send an email to christina.m.albrecht@gmail. com.

Congressman Malinowski Visits Readington

Main Street Beautification

Congressman Tom Malinowski paid a visit to Readington on April 18 to tour our Public Works facility and to discuss how the Township plans to use the $750,000 Federal Appropriations Local Funding grant which the Township was awarded, and which he facilitated. The grant will be used for a much-needed upgrade and expansion to the public works facility.

The Whitehouse Beautification Committee has again made Main Street more attractive by planting colorful Spring and Summer flowers in 16 large pots along Main Street in Whitehouse Station. This volunteer group devotes many hours to tending and watering these containers.

Congressman Malinowski was greeted at the Municipal Building by Township Administrator Richard Sheola and Township Committee Members John Albanese and Betty Ann Fort. After a brief tour and meet-and-greet at the Municipal Building, the group walked through Pickell Park to the Public Works building, where Assistant Director of Public Works Ron Christy and Township Engineer Rob O’Brien gave a brief visual tour of the existing facility and discussed what would be done to improve and expand the facility with the grant money.

For many years, volunteers carried water from their homes to water the plants, but this year, our Public Works Dept. will transport a water tank to the Bank Street Parking Lot so volunteers have access to a water source in town. The Committee is always looking for volunteers who can adopt a pot or two to help with the watering. For more info, call Mary Ann Lacamera at 908-534-2215.

Readington Dog Park at Hillcrest Park will be undergoing renovations during the upcoming weeks, which will result in parts or all of the large dog area being closed temporarily. A chronic water problem—resulting in muddy dogs and muddy dog-owners’ cars—is being addressed by our Department of Public Works.

The project will involve re-grading parts of the enclosure to move water away from the center, and the planting of several trees (donated by Ron Christy, Assistant Director of Public Works) to absorb some of the water and provide muchneeded shade. All of this should provide an improved—and cleaner!-experience for Readington’s canine citizens and their people. The Dog Park is open to all Township residents and their dogs, and is divided into two sections, one for small dogs and one for large dogs. The only requirements are that dogs be licensed and vaccinated.

• Enhancement of safety, health and wellness through multiple maintenance projects; Readington Township School District’s total budget will be $38.7 million. This year, the district budgeted to receive $2.1 million in state revenue, and approximately $3.1 million from other sources such as tuition, interest, and grants which will reduce the impact to taxpayers. The remaining portion of our budget is funded locally and, as demonstrated in the chart on page 4, represents a 2.234% increase in the school tax levy. RV Habitat for Humanity Hosts Wine Tasting Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity (RV Habitat) is hosting a wine tasting at Beneduce Vineyard in Pittstown on June 5 from noon to 4 p.m. Proceeds from the event will help fund RV Habitat’s first “Honor Build” -- a two-bedroom home in Somerville for a Veteran household. As a Habitat Veteran Affiliate, Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity commits to providing home ownership, volunteer, and employment opportunities to U.S. Veterans, military service members, and their families. Throughout the year, RV Habitat also hosts special events that pay tribute to Veterans, raise awareness, and mobilize volunteers. “Members of our military serve us when we need it most,” says RV Habitat Executive Director Melissa Flynn. “It’s our honor to serve them when they need us.” This family-friendly event will feature a wine tasting, live music, light bites, lawn games, and a cash bar. There will also be a drawing for a dinner for four with Sopranos’ star Federico Castelluccio (Furio Giunta). Adult tickets are $50 and include the tasting and a wine glass. Tickets for attendees under 21 are $10. Tickets for the dinner-forfour drawing are $100. To order tickets, visit rvhabitat.org/honorbuild or call 908-704-0016.
