Readington Township Committee Reorganizes

Readington Township School District to Redistrict to Prepare for Enrollment Increases By Jonathan Hart, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools At the Dec. 14 Readington Township Board of Education meeting, school district administrators provided an enrollment and housing development update to the BoE and community. The housing development plans that will impact school enrollment were reviewed. Analysis determined that a need to redistrict is necessary. The plans were discussed preliminarily in 2019 and a 5-year redistricting plan was presented in February of 2021. Since then the district has kept a close eye on enrollment and housing developments. There are four (4) developments that have been constructed or are under construction that are projected to have an impact on district enrollment. The Willows at Whitehouse Station is a 72-unit complex that was completed in 2020. This development provided our district with a baseline of student enrollment projections. The Ridge at Readington is under construction on Route 22 west in Whitehouse Station and may be completed as soon as this spring. This development will be a 254-unit complex. The Bramco/ Interstate Ironworks development on Mullen Road may be completed in the year 2023-2024 or sometime thereafter and includes 192 housing units. Finally, the Diaz Property on Route 202 in Three Bridges is several years from completion but will comprise 80 housing units. The enrollment analysis anticipates well over 200 students enrolling in the district simply due to the housing development construction. While the facilities have room to grow in population, the district is

The

beginning to find that Whitehouse and Three Bridges enrollment is becoming increasingly disproportionate. It is anticipated the disparity in enrollment will worsen in the next several years considering three of these developments impact the Whitehouse School student population. The district has developed a fiveyear redistricting implementation plan. The plan identifies residences on certain streets to be redistricted from Whitehouse School to Three Bridges School over the next five years, starting with Kindergarten enrollees and new move-ins. The plan was launched this school year (2021-2022) where students identified in the region of the township that is scheduled to be redistricted to Three Bridges School were given a choice to attend Three Bridges or Whitehouse School. As the district prepares for next year, families living on the streets listed below or families moving into Readington on the streets listed below will have their Kindergarten students or newly enrolled students attend Three Bridges, without an option to attend Whitehouse School. Streets are: Arrowhead Road, Blacksmith Road, Casper Berger Road, Cherry Court, Cole Road, Conover Road, Dalley Street, Distillery Road, Erskine Road, Groendyke Road, Hamilton Road, Heath Road, Hillcrest Road, Holland Brook Road, Housel Road, Indian Road, Jennings Lane, Kinney’s Sawmill Road, Militia Road, Militia Road East, Pine Bank Road, Readington Road, Rebel Road, Roosevelt Road, Smith Road, Sutphen Lane, Swackhamer Road, and Van Pelt Drive. Children enrolling from these

streets who have an older sibling at Whitehouse School will be able to attend with their sibling. The plan of moving only newly enrolled students and Kindergarten students in the redistricted area to attend school at Three Bridges will take place over the course of the next several years, with all students grades K-3 in the redistricted area attending Three Bridges School by the 2025-2026 school year. Our goal is to ensure comparable school enrollments for class size and programming purposes. More information can be found on the school district website or by contacting the Board of Education Offices.

Board of Education Begins Budget Work By Dr. Camille Cerciello BoE Finance Committee Chair

The Board of Education is tasked with managing the budget of the district with the guidance of our Superintendent, Dr. Jonathan Hart, and our Business Administrator, Jason Bohm. As with every year, the first few months of the new year is when budgeting, planning and preparing occurs. The 2021-2022 budget, which is currently being utilized, has helped the district to meet the goals that are set annually. With this year’s budget, the district was able to hire an additional full-time behaviorist and parttime ESL teacher. With the assistance of federal grant programs, the district was able to provide additional inter-

vention services for COVID learning loss and mental health services. This year’s budget also allowed for enhancements to school security including 3M ballistic window film applied to all windows of each school building. Further, the district was able to replace a large section of the roof of Holland Brook School and replace one set of gymnasium bleachers at Readington Middle School. Tentative open public sessions and budget topics for the 2022-2023 school year are as follows: (Please note these dates can change and public notices will be posted in advance with start times. ment, Pupil Services and Technology; Feb. 22: Facilities, Transportation, Administration, Personnel and Benefits; March 15: Presentation on the whole budget to the public with tentative approval; April 5: Budget clarification; April 26: Budget hearing and final adoption of budget During the planning of the 20222023 school year budget, there will be some challenges facing our district which include, as of the writing of this article, staff and program modifications due to an increased enrollment from new housing developments, facility upgrades to ensure both students and staff remain safe and healthy, along with increases in staff salaries and health insurance premiums. In addition to these challenges, the district continues to be committed to providing our students with a comprehensive and rigorous program of studies, with a full complement of athletic and extra-curricular offerings. All input and concerns about the budget can be heard during the Feb. 8

and Feb. 22 board meetings as well as the other dates listed above. Public input helps the Board of Education to create a fiscally responsible budget while keeping all of the members of the community apprised

of the current needs of the district. Please consider attending one or all of the dates. As always, should you have questions, please email boardmembers@ readington.k12.nj.us.

Regency at Readington holds Walkathon for Whitehouse Rescue Squad

Pictured are residents who participated on the day of the Regency at Readington Walkathon.

By Scarlett Doyle In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, the community of Regency at Readington held a Walkathon fundraiser for the Whitehouse Rescue Squad recently. The walking route was within the entire community of approximately 120 residential homes. Chair of the Walkathon, Nan-

cy Wotanis, reflected on the day, “It was a pleasure to support the Whitehouse Rescue Squad and we hope to do it again next year. We had a remarkable group of volunteers who made it such a successful event. It was a perfect fall day and many residents participated. They walked the roads in our community and dropped in bids for the several raffle baskets that were also part of

the occasion. We also want to thank people and businesses who generously offered donations to make this such a special day. Arvin’s Landscape on Route 22 East, Bensi Restaurant at the Kings Shopping Center, and the Whitehouse General Store on old Route 28 were so generous in their donations. Kona Ice was on site with ice cream for the participants. Rescue Squad member, Mike Pikulin, and resident at the Regency, assisted with ambulance coverage during the day.” Nancy particularly recognized the efforts of members of the committee who gave their time in planning and helping at the Walkathon: Committee Head Jill Searing and Volunteer Committee Members Beth Warren, Brenda Wilk, Nancy Dowd, Karen Garcia, Laurie Loftus, Marge Sharkey, Cary Gonzalez, Kathy Dockendorf and Ann Marie Willard.

Scholarship to Celebrate Life of Dominic Steven Gentile

Dominic Steven Gentile

A scholarship has been created to celebrate the life of Dominic Steven Gentile, DVM, a beloved member of the Readington Township community, who passed away at the age of 28 on Oct. 29, 2021, at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. The scholarship in his name will be given to a deserving Hunterdon Central Regional High School senior starting with the May 2022 awards. Dominic was an amazing person who was admired and loved by everyone who had the chance to be part of his life. He was an outstanding member of the Readington Township Community where he grew up and was an active participant and volunteer in many of our recreation

programs as well as associated fundraising activities. Dominic was a 2012 graduate of Hunterdon Central Regional High School where he was a student athlete and captain of the championship soccer team. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Rutgers University in 2016 and went on to attend Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. During his fourth year in veterinary school, he was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer. Despite many challenges, Dominic graduated Summa Cum Laude from Iowa State in 2021 with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. Upon graduating, he worked at the Whitehouse Veterinary Hospital in Whitehouse Station. Dominic Steven Gentile Memorial Scholarship will read: Dominic Gentile was an outstanding member of the Readington Township Community. had the pleasure of knowing him. Candidates will be requested to write an essay explaining how they demonstrate the characteristics that Dominic lived by, whether on a team or other extracurricular activity, and explain why they deserve this scholarship. Patience for Patients – Whitehouse School focuses on a differ-

ent character trait every month. Each December, amid the holiday hustle and bustle, the school community emphasizes patience as a virtue. As the staff members teach students that patience means waiting with a happy heart, they take time to consider local children who will not be home in time to celebrate the holidays. To spread some love and good cheer, students embark on the school’s annual service project “Patience for Patients.” The children painted festive snowmen for the Pediatrics Unit at Hunterdon Medical Center. Pictured with some of the artwork are Kristen Halozan (Whitehouse School art teacher) and Kathleen Seelig (Hunterdon Medical Center’s Corporate Director of Public Relations & Marketing). - Submitted by Dr. Ann T.
