Taylor Rehe Honored for YMCA Leadership

By Kate Russo Senior Branch Executive Director Greater Somerset County YMCA

Greater Somerset County YMCA staff member Taylor Rehe is a recipient of the 30 Under 30 award for the 2021 year of service. Rehe is the camp director of Camp Timber at Bridgewater YMCA, a branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, and a Branchburg resident. She is a full time music teacher and works at the Y in the summer and additionally during the school year. The award is given to Y staff members under age 30 who have the potential to lead Y associations in the future. Rehe was one of 121 nominations in 2021, and one of 30 selected across the country as an emerging leader. These award winners are young leaders who have accomplished spe-

cific achievements at the YMCA or within their local communities. They have a strong record of innovation in their fields, outstanding performance in their YMCAs, and a clear track record of meaningful community involvement. Rehe started working at the Y in January 2018 as a Membership Services representative and Manager on Duty. In summer 2019, she was chosen as a substitute camp counselor at Somerville YMCA, and stepped into the role of Bridgewater camp director in 2020. She has helped support the YMCA in several departments, including Wellness, School Age Child Care, Camp, Aquatics, and Membership in her four-year tenure at the Y. Rehe is also a fitness enthusiast, personal trainer and aquatics specialist. She has achieved multiple certifications while at the YMCA.

From left are David Carcieri, CEO of Greater Somerset County YMCA; Taylor Rehe; and Edward Norgard, Associate Branch Executive Director.

Camp Timber was one of two summer camps operating within the immediate service area in 2020 during the pandemic. Rehe’s leadership allowed operations to continue despite many challenges. She is dedicated to International Camp Kindness Day, and as such organized her campers’ participation in a service project to create meal bags for the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP).

Plastic Bag Law Takes Effect May 4

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is banning single-use plastic bags and polystyrene foam food-service containers beginning May 4. The law, signed by Governor Phil Murphy in 2020, requires grocery stores and retail establishments to no longer provide single-use plastic bags to customers. In addition, grocery stores 2,500 square feet or larger may not provide customers with single-use paper bags. The law also prohibits the sale of polystyrene foam takeout food containers and other polystyrene food-service products such as plates, cups, food trays and utensils. Details are available at https://www. nj.gov/dep/get-past-plastic/.

Branchburg Native Promotes Mother’s Day Luminaria Fundraiser Branchburg native Dallis Vargas is promoting a one-of-a-kind nonprofit organization on a mission to empower, support and connect girls and young women up through age 24 who have experienced the loss of their mothers as the Program Coordinator for empowerHER. Dallis is co-chair of the planning committee for the NYC Mother’s Day Luminaria for the second year. “We are building community for girls silently suffering the loss of their mother. Our events and mentorship programs remind girls they are not alone in their grief and help to teach, ‘loss is survivable,’ ” Dallis wrote in an email. She hopes to reach people around New Jersey who might benefit from the programs. “My mom, Joanne Vargas, died from breast cancer when I was just 17 years old, so I know first hand how important and life changing these programs can be!” Dallis, a 2010 graduate of Somerville High School, is a business immigration attorney currently living in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband. Since the summer of 2020 she has spent her free time volunteering with empowerHER and has been employed part time as a Program Coordinator for empowerHER’s Tri-State Chapter since October 2021.As a Program Coordinator, Dallis has been helping empowerHER expand their reach into New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, so girls and young women who experienced mother loss in those areas will have the oppor-

tunity to partake in empowerHER’s mentorship program and be a part of a more localized empowerHER community. The largest annual fundraiser, Mother’s Day Luminaria, is a whimsical display of personalized luminaries honoring loved ones on Mother’s Day. Each luminary, purchased by donors from across the globe for a suggested $25 donation, is uniquely displayed by local volunteers. All proceeds fund year-round events and mentorship and ensure all programs remain at no charge to the family. Luminaria will take place in 10 cities across the country (the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., Oracle Park in San Francisco, and more) and in a small intimate cocktail party at Beauty & Essex in NYC on May 7. Branchburg Woman’s Club Plans May Dinner By Kate Sarles May brings the end of the club’s 2021-2022 planned activities. It is marked by the club’s annual dinner, chaired this year by Kathy Herdman and Joan Jorgensen. On May 9 members will meet at the Stoney Brook Grille for an evening of remembrance and planning. New officers are installed and members volunteer for the various leadership positions. This may include signing up for a committee to bring refreshments to the general meetings or organizing monthly activities such as the Lunch Bunch, Dinner Bunch, or Literary meetings. Each year, the club undertakes various community projects. For example, every year money is raised to fund

awards for Branchburg Central Middle School and Somerville High School graduating students. BCMS monetary awards include two high academic achievement awards as well as one each for vocal and instrumental music. Two monetary awards are reserved for SHS students. Appropriate school staff recommend the award recipients. Branchburg’s four fire companies, North Branch, Neshanic, Country Hills, Readington and the Branchburg Rescue Squad also receive yearly awards for their important contribution. The club donated the two benches outside BCMS along with trash cans and liners. Also, at each monthly meeting, members bring food for the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. If you would like to join us for a meeting, contact 908-458-6832 or branchburgwomansclub@gmail.com. We have a lot of fun!

SHS Winter Guard Competes in World Championships By Patti Verbanas

The Somerville High School Winter Guard competed in the Winter Guard International (WGI) World Championships in Dayton, OH, April 7–9, ranking 26th out of 40 teams in the Scholastic Open Class. The guard’s show “Unspeakable World” was directed by Rick Delancy. They were set to compete next in the Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network Championships April 23–24. Winter Guard — known as “the sport of the arts” — is a competitive indoor color guard activity in which performers use flags, rifles, sabers and other equipment combined with dance to produce a choreographed show. Teams are judged in various categories, including movement, technique, design analysis, equipment and general effect. The Somerville Winter Guard has been featured in two documen-

taries on the sport. Musician David Byrne selected the team to be one of 10 to collaborate with indie musicians to create a live music and winter guard show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, and Toronto’s Air Canada Center, which was featured in the 2017 documentary Contemporary Color. The guard also participated in the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) documentary Marching to the Coolest Beat, which focused on how this dance sport tradition binds communities together and brings creativity and joy to performers and audiences, especially at the high school level. Somerville High School students and Somerville Middle School and Branchburg Middle School students who love to perform and are interested in auditioning for the 2022–23 Color Guard and Winter Guard team or finding out more information can contact Rick Delancy at rick-

Mowed down. . . This wood turtle on her way to lay eggs was killed May 16, 2014, by a mower. Considering she was at least 10 years old, the situation is even more tragic. Wood turtles are a natural treasure hidden in plain view and tall grass, who deserve far more than just our consideration.

A children’s game, now fading from collective memory, where an authority figure stood facing away from the players who would ask permission to take steps forward. The question included the refrain, “Mother, may I.” The reply might be, “take one giant step forward” or “take two baby steps back.” This game is said to be the inspiration for Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon, when he said, “One small step for man. One giant step for mankind.” The months of May and June are the time when turtles step forward,

one small step for that turtle and a giant step for preserving that species genetic future as they seek a location to lay eggs. Turtle species have relied on thousands of years of evolution to reach a relatively stable set of behaviors that has seen them through a millennium of environmental change before the appearance of humans. If change occurs faster than a species can adapt, it ceases to exist. The changes turtles face today were never included in the genetic mapping that made them so successful for thousands of years. Roads and highways, farming and land development have thrown a curve ball to confound the turtles’ evolutionary success via gradual change. Mower blades spinning at 3,500 revolutions per minute sound a death knell to the species in general and elimination of threatened and endangered reptiles from an already shrinking home range. The presence of a turtle, no matter the species, is a miracle to behold when you consider it is a time traveler, unchanged in appearance from prehistoric times, who stepped through a wormhole in space into the 21st century. The most common species found crossing roads, as evidenced by unsuccessful attempts, is the ubiquitous snapping turtle. An aquatic species whose genetic GPS directs it to favorable high ground away from the

vagaries of floods and droughts to lay its eggs. Perhaps it is the distance travelled to lay eggs that has made the snapper so successful and vulnerable to predators, among them autos. Another turtle commonly found crossing roads is the eastern box turtle. Box turtles are often concentrated in upland areas. A terrestrial species, it follows the rule of not laying eggs in the area it normally lives. I speculate that predators know where to find their prey and the prey know that the best chance for eggs to reach term would be somewhere away from the general population. So it is that each spring, female turtles will leave home grounds for a suitable nursery in which to incubate their eggs. Eastern box turtles are assigned a “concerned” classification, given a shrinking environment and loss of genetic variation due to populations isolated on islands of habitat. Continuity of habitat is a critical concern and a prime reason to establish and preserve greenways along rivers and streams. The wood turtle is classified as endangered by state and “under review” by federal US Fish and Wildlife Service and is found locally. Aquatic and terrestrial, it spends time in meadows and uplands near rivers and streams making it more vulnerable to mowing not only during spring egg laying but throughout the season from April to October. Wood turtles are long lived and do not reach reproductive age for

Mower, May I? several years. This makes wood turtle populations very sensitive to loss of any mature adults. Research finds the loss of one or two adults may mark the end of that population over time. From the Wisconsin DNR website: “Wood turtle populations are particularly sensitive to removal of reproducing adults, and Compton (1999) determined that removal of only two adults annually from a group of 100 individuals would result in extinction of that population in 76 years, and removal of three adult individuals annually would lead to extinction in 50 years.” The meadows and uplands along our rivers are prime wood turtle habitat and any mowing must be evaluated

for benefit vs harm. Walking trails trod by hikers is preferable to mowing. A mature wood turtle was killed on open space land when a path was mowed for the convenience of some local walkers. This act may have signed a death warrant for the wood turtle population in the area. In this game of survival, the wood turtle may ask “Mower, may I?” when traversing our meadows during egg laying and feeding. Check these websites, one from Wisconsin and one from New Jersey for more information about Wood Turtles, and most interesting, the electronic tracking of a female wood turtle at the Great Swamp National Refuge by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Another wood turtle barely escaped being run over by a white van in the same area along the South Branch. The location of both turtles was reported to the state, which tracks wood turtle populations. This turtle is missing a left front foot, though well healed over.

Vo-Tech Campus Cleanup

Students and advisors from Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School’s (SCVTHS) FFA, Connect4Cancer, Teen Think Tank Project, National Honor Society, and National Technical Honor Society clubs recently participated in a campus cleanup. As a community service project, 20 students from the clubs worked on different parts of the campus and collected trash. Agricultural Science Instructor Mr.

Erik Fargo said, “This was our largest turnout we’ve had in four years of organizing this event. We were able to cover and clean more campus property than in years past. . . This will give our participating students community service hours they can use toward earning their Honorary FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America) Chapter and State degrees.”

One year ago, May 2021 – On May 29, in time for Memorial Day, Silver Saddle Pool opened under a new name: Branchburg’s Silver Saddle Community Pool, with many updates. Branchburg Senior Citizens Having a Ball

By Audrey Henry Branchburg Recreation

The Branchburg Seniors have been busy these past few months and membership is growing strong! If you are a Branchburg resident 55 or older, join the fun and benefits of registering for the Branchburg Senior Citizens Program, online through Community Pass or by calling Recreation 908-526-1300 x 188. You will receive program discounts and be eligible for trips,

planned just for our Seniors. The March Senior Social Meeting was a wonderful celebration of everything Irish. A delicious traditional St. Patrick’s Day luncheon was prepared by Elmer’s Catering, Irish songs were led by our talented pianist, member Rita Jordan, and a video Visions of Ireland was shown. Irish Eyes were smiling that day! On April 7, 35 seniors took a trip to see “David,” an epic Bible story that came to life on a panoramic

stage. If you have never experienced Sight & Sound in Lancaster, PA, it is a family experience that is well worth the trip and rivals any Broadway production. The April 14 meeting was the rescheduled business meeting and celebrated those with April Birthdays. The 21st was the Annual Spring Training Luncheon catered by, you guessed it, Elmer’s. This baseball-themed luncheon knocked it out of the park, with members in their ‘rally caps’

hoping to see their favorite players ‘sock a dinger’ and no ‘goose eggs’ on the scoreboard this season! On April 28, 25 members attended a lovely breakfast at Somerset County Vo-Tech’s Trade Wins restaurant. An impressively delicious buffet was cooked up and served by the Culinary Arts students. The May business meeting will be held on Thursday, May 5, and will feature speaker Jodi Ventimiglia, presenting “How to Prevent a Crisis,” fall prevention and various topics regarding seniors and their health. On May 12 a local trip to the RVCC Planetarium is planned to

see “From Earth to the Universe.” Sign up in advance, or $10 at the door. May 19 is the Spring Luncheon at the Somerville Elks, followed by a May 26 outing to the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse. This trip is sold out. So if you like what you have read, join us for the next Senior Meeting as a guest, but call Recreation to let us know you will be attending: 908-526-1300 x 188. We meet at the Whiton Hills Community Room, Bldg. #10 lower level. Check the Township website, under Recreation for the Senior Calendar of Meetings and Events.
